"Arguments is a vintage-style test equipment plugin for tone generation and dual audio processing. It takes two signals and smashes them together using math derived from analog nuclear research processors. The results are dynamic, often unpredictable but always unique. Since each part of Arguments can run independently, it also works as a sonically rich test tone generator, as a complex distortion unit, or as a multimode filter. Arguments open nature rewards exploration, the presets are a mere suggestion for you to jump off from.

At its core Arguments is an analog computing-based combiner and integrator of signals, re-tuned from science to musical use. These instruments were used in analog nuclear instrumentation modular racks (NIM BIN) to allow for quick calculations without employing a dedicated computer. Arguments takes two signals A and B (B is either external via side-chain or from the internal generator) and puts them together using the argument block. The result is then put through a function block that processes it. This creates a wide range of tones, from simple boosting to high-passed industrial grit, from rhythmic modulations to raw textures. A multi-mode filter stage then allows for exact shaping and modulation. We employed analog modeling at every stage to make Arguments sound not like a calculator but like the rare vintage units that inspired it. "Just got back from serviced from Allen of Synthspa, invocHere what was done : General repair for the circuit boards. New battery in CPU, update panel board with 4052’s, and refresh solder joints. Install pins on voice chips for easy replacement, install sockets for easy removal.

All the sliders pots are new. vca/vcf/vco chips are also new. One slider cap is missing. Power cord included.

Synthspa loaded their 'soup-up' J106 Sounds on their board. We can load the original factory sounds if you prefer

About Aphelion ( 8HP)
Aphelion packs a stereo distortion and low/high pass filter into a compact 8HP design.
It features three unique stereo distortions in parallel with a continuous crossfade between them, controlled with the character knob or a cv input.

The first circuit is an overdrive that adds a lot of warmth and fattens up the sound without becoming too harsh. The second one is a saturating wavefolder, that can add interesting extra harmonics depending on the waveform of the material. The last distortion is inspired by the classic RAT guitar pedal. It adds an aggressive feel and grit to the sound..

A mix knob lets you blend the dry input signal with the distorted signal, before it hits the filter. Setting it fully dry bypasses the distortion effect.

If you need even more dirt, there's a handy +12dB gain switch, to really overdrive the circuits. If you want to keep your low-end undistorted, you can switch on the Low-cut filter.
The non resonant stereo filter combines a low pass and high pass stage, and uses an IC based on the classic SSM2040.

This filter is also overdriven, adding some warm distortion and extra harmonics to the original signal, and limiting the output level.
The cutoff knob becomes a a low pass filter when turned counter clockwise, and a high pass filter when turned clockwise. It's possible to control the low and high pass filter cores independently as well using CV.

The filter bypass switch can be used for instant reintroduction of all frequencies into the mix upon release—a great tool for live performers. Lastly the level knob attenuates the output volume.

Making Pinged Kick Drums with Toppobrillo Multifilter 2

How to patch a kick drum with the Toppobrillo Multifilter 2:

1. Patch a gate or trigger to the Ping input of the filter. You can monitor any output but I use the Variable mode output.

2. Set the resonance to at least 12 o’clock but no higher than 3 o’clock. More resonance = more sustain

3. Set the frequency below 10 o’clock or to taste.

4. Patch either the low pass, band pass, or high pass outputs to the Mode CV input. Attenuvert to taste. This can add some phase modulation and increases harmonics.

5. Send a decay envelope to the FM input. Attenuate to taste.

6. Ignore the filter inputs and gain knob.

Notes:
Envelope generated from a Toppobrillo Sport Modulator 2 with a linear shape.
I prefer taking the output from the Variable output because of the additional tone shaping available, but you can use any output for this patch. It can also be fun to experiment with using multiple outputs and processing them differently."
