Dannysound / Tobinski System Test

video upload by Dannysound

"Testing the system for Superbooth 24 - The new modules also feature a name change as the brand is slowly moving over to Tobinski.
New modules due to be released this year are:

Sequencer - 2 banks of 8 voltage sliders, each bank referenced by 2 independent 8 step sequencers for a total 4 sequencers. Each sequencer features start and end loop points plus external clock inputs. The sequencer has 8 voltage outputs, 6 gate outputs plus transport controls for the internal clock.

Sequencer Expander - Adds a host of extra functions to control each of the 4 sequencers. Including CV over loop start and end points, gate length, step order and many more...

Dual LFOs - 2 LFOs with 16 waveform types. One LFO can be synced to a clock while the other resets to an incoming pulse, plus cv and cross-modulation options for all parameters.

Harmonic Timing Generator - Can be used as a Harmonic Oscillator or Harmonic LFO that can clock each the 4 sequencers in the Sequencer module. The module features multiplier inputs x2, x3, x5 and x7 to multiply the internal oscillator or external sources. It also has 3 outputs for the multiplied waveforms that can be CV or manually addressed using the pushbutton switches or pots.

Interpolating Scanner - Internally connected to the Harmonic Timing Generator and features not only an 8 input scanner with CV options but also has 8 VCAs that act separately from the scanner with their own outputs, plus mixer outputs for ODD, ALL and EVEN for both the scanner and VCAs to allow for stereo effects among other possibilities.

Dual LPG/VCA - 2 x LPG/VCAs in one 6hp module that combine the Dannysound MM VCA based on the classic Mini Moog VCA and also the classic Buchla LPG design (used throughout this clip!) so famous for it's acoustic tone.

Come say hello at Superbooth, I'll be in the Bungalow Dorf with some other great manufacturers!"

Dynamic Processing Techniques for Eurorack // Dannysound Dynamics & VU Meters
video upload by DivKidVideo

"Here we have the character oozing ‘Dynamics’ Eurorack module from Dannysound. The module has multiple functions and can be patched to operate as a compressor, expander, harmonic exciter, saturator or distortion, sub bass generator, EQ, envelope follower or a simple VCA. With all those functions to hand I wanted to make a video that explores modular music making techniques as well as applying wider music production tips, tricks and workflows that you can apply in your own music and sound creation too.

Throughout the video I’m using 2x Dynamics modules and the VU meters expander allowing for showing more concepts per patch, but you can apply these patches to a single module too. The module can be used as a separate EQ and compressor which too, allowing you to EQ your side chain signal (like sidechain filters on compressors) or simply use a single Dynamics module like two independent modules. With so much potential for this set of functions you’ll find some no talking patches just exploring adding life to beats or the amp drive (lovely saturation) spread throughout the video as musical interludes."

via Thonk

"The Dannysound Dynamics is a fully featured Eurorack mono compressor / expander module with a range of on board controls and features. The module has been designed so that it can be used with another Dynamics module as a stereo pair with the Dannysound VU Meters Expander.

This module was originally designed to focus on drum processing & compression, but in reality can be used for a wide variety of applications. The Dynamics comprises of:

· Compressor / Expander

· Sub Bass Enhancer

· 3 Band Inductor-based EQ

· Harmonic Exciter

The compressor / expander section uses a discrete transistor-based circuit that allows for soft clipping when overdriven. The envelope detector is known as a feedforward type of circuit; taking its input from the signal before it goes to the compressor rather than after. This type of circuit is known for having fast attack times.

The Sub Bass enhancer has its own compression circuit that “ducks” the initial transient. This allows the sub bass to be increased without distortion on the transient peaks increasing the overall level.

There is a MIX control to allow the unprocessed signal to be mixed back in with the processed signal.

The 3 band EQ is an inductor based LCR design. After trying out various EQ topologies this was the design that sounded the nicest. When overdriven it gives a nice “bite” to the sound and it has a certain characterful charm that’s hard to put into words. The controls have a response that are subtle to begin with and get more pronounced as the controls are increased.

The Harmonic Exciter adds a little distortion to the high frequencies which bring out the sparkle of cymbals or the snap of snare drums. The operating bandwidth can be switched between Low (snare drum snap) or High (Cymbals sparkle).

There are inputs for side chaining and control with an external envelope as well as an envelope out to make the envelope detector output available to drive other modules.

It also features separate inputs and outputs for the Compressor / Expander and EQ sections, so they could be used as 2 separate modules."

Dynamics sandwiched between VU Meters.

9 Ways to Use Filters Creatively // Dannysound Multimode Ladder Filter

video upload by DivKidVideo

"While it’s common for classic circuits to be reused, cloned and emulated it’s not as often we see them expanded on. So I was excited to see that Dannysound’s Eurorack filter module takes a classic filter design and expands it in several ways. The Multimode Ladder Filter is based on the 1960s classic Moog transistor based low pass ladder filter design but it expands it by being multimode (with added band pass and high pass), it adds level control to clean up or further saturate the filter, features additional CV control with attenuation and compensates for the lost low end at higher resonance settings which is a characteristic found in the original Moog filter.

This video is a demo of the module as well a tutorial offering 9 patches for pushing your filtering creatively. Try these in your systems and leave a comment letting me know how you get on.

Dannysound MM VCA // Classic Moog style VCA in Eurorack

Published on Jul 26, 2019 DivKidVideo

"Here we have the Dannysound MM VCA which is a 6HP VCA with two internal VCAs for multiple modulation points based on the classic Moog Minimoog Model D. The MM VCA offers soft clip saturation and wave shaping of the inputs boosting the fundamental and warming the low end while either adding harmonics to simple tones or removing harmonics from complex ones. This VCA is great for AM synthesis and I take the time to fully explore that in the video. Skip around with the index before and I hope you get some ideas for ways to use VCAs around your system.

Dannysound Timbre // Buchla 259 inspired wavefolder in Eurorack

Published on Jul 19, 2019 DivKidVideo

"Here we have the new Timbre from Dannysound. It’s a 6HP Eurorack wavefolder inspired by the Buchla 259. There's bags of character and tone and plenty of options for modulation. We can control wavefolding manually and with CV (with attenuverter), the input section has a crossfade between two inputs, we can move the symmetry of the wave and blend between dry and wet (both with CV too). In the video I aim to demonstrate not only the module but the wide range of potential uses for creating compression like FX, soft clipping and folding FX, processing CV and of course making complex oscillator tones. Leave a comment with any questions and thanks for watching.

The Timbre is 6HP Eurorack module based on the wavefolder section of the Buchla 259 oscillator as implemented in the Music Easel. The wavefolder adds extra harmonics to input signals that have low harmonic content to creating rich and interesting timbres. Typical input sources to use would be Sine and Triangle waves but you are welcome to try other sources as well! The Dannysound Timbre adds an extra input to the Buchla design to allow 2 oscillators to drive the wavefolder simultaneously – this dramatically increases the range of possible tones that can be generated and allows the folder to go wild!

Features
Osc1 / Osc2 Mix – Adjusts mix between oscillator 1 and 2 inputs, also acts as an attenuator if only one of the inputs is used.
Timbre Control – Adjusts the overall wavefold amount.
Timbre CV – Bipolar (attenuverter) controls the Timbre CV input.
Symmetry – Adds an offset to the input so the top half of the wave starts folding earlier.
Blend – Mixes between the clean and effected sound.

Published on Oct 5, 2018 DivKidVideo

"**TIMING INDEX / PATCHES LISTED BELOW** Here's the Cali Osc (california oscillator) from Dannysound which goes alongside the great EN129 thru zero FM oscillator to create a great pair of oscillators. However they are both great stand alone products and that's how they're presented. So watch the EN129 video (link below) after this one and enjoy them both. The Cali Osc is inspired by the Buchla 258 with wave shaping that crossfades between shapes. It begs for audio rate modulation and tonal exploration.

Dannysound EN129 Thru Zero Oscillator (a world of analog tones!)

Published on Sep 7, 2018 DivKidVideo

"** TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS BELOW ** Here's the new analogue (or analog if not British) thru zero FM oscillator the 'EN129' from Dannysound. The module offers great, analogue, through zero frequency modulation with is musical and responsive offering for dynamic modulation without the wide ranging pitch drift in exp/log response analogue FM circuits. There is an additional LOG FM input and attenuator so you can exploit two flavours of FM and their responses. There's coarse and fine tune, LFO button to drop the range, sine, triangle, pulse, square and saw outputs. The pulse has PWM control and inputs and the saw has some rather unique onboard shaping too.

https://www.thonk.co.uk/shop/dannysou...

TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS

00:00 Welcome, hello, patch previews

01:15 Feature run down and walkthrough

02:36 The sound, the thru zero FM (an exploration of...) and the other waveforms and controls. There's a comparison of thru zero and log/exp FM, PWM, static and dynamic (modulated by an external VCA) frequency modulation and more.

06:52 The square and pulse waves ... the square sounds great (a little filter/delay sequenced patch). I then explore standard LFO modulation of PWM but also audio rate pulse modulation for a wide range of static and dynamic PWM overtones that gives us all sorts of phase distortion synth type tones imparting new and unique overtones compared to the standard analogue waves you'll be used to.

10:05 FM Interjection 1 ... a little thru zero sine on sine / sine on triangle FM interjection with no talking. A lovely little ear break :)

10:32 The saw wave output ... looking at wave shaping the saw with octave up like FX, tremolo style amplitude changes, adding voltages to add a square edge and set of harmonics to the saw and audio rate overtones for even further unique and new tones from otherwise simple waves.

14:08 A stereo generative patch making use of the pulse output and saw outputs with some FX and a pair of LPGs.

16:21 FM Interjection 2 ... thru zero sine on sine dynamic (envelope / VCA controlled modulation) FM for some quirky and classic FM tones.

16:34 Using the EN129 as an LFO. This offers some unique wave shape control using thru zero FM to control the LFO shape at various sub audio and audio rates. We create a new "diamond waveform" in this section too.

20:27 FM Interjection 3 ... tuneful yet warbly thru zero FM sequences with a little wonkiness as a palette cleanser before the final section on the video.

20:48 Creating a kick drum / percussion sound with the EN129 and using the thru zero FM to add noise based snare like overtones or FM like tones for added impact and creative tone control when synthesising your own drum sounds."

Dannysound - EN129 Analog Thru Zero Oscillator (Thonk)

Published on Aug 28, 2018 Thonk Synth DIY

"Available to buy here - https://www.thonk.co.uk/dannysound

A fully featured Analog Through Zero Oscillator. Capable of a wide array of tones and timbres. Go from rich melodic waves straight into FM craziness!

The EN129 Thru Zero Oscillator is an all analog triangle-core VCO specialising in frequency modulation. Analog thru-zero FM modulation produces a wide array of timbres particularly useful for bell like or percussive sounds.

Frequency modulation can be precisely dialled in thanks to a dedicated input attenuator and v/oct offset control. Logarithmic FM is also available via it’s own dedicated input with attenuator and both FM inputs have an LED to indicate incoming voltages. Simultaneous analog wave outputs include: Sine, Triangle, Sawtooth, Square and Pulse wave with Pulse Width Modulation.

The PWM control goes to zero at either end of it’s range, which is very useful for creating rhythmic sounds with voltage control. Furthermore the PWM control doubles up as waveshape modulation for the Sawtooth wave – gradually altering the waveform until it shifts half a cycle. The EN129 features Coarse and Fine frequency controls as well as an LFO mode.

LFO range is accessed via an LED pushbutton that also acts as the LFO speed indicator – the button will light up when the waveform moves through its positive cycle.

Features:

* Thru Zero linear FM
* Logarithmic FM
* Zero to zero pulse width modulation
* Sawtooth wave shape modulation
* Simultaneous outputs for: Sine, Triangle, Saw, Pulse & Square
* Coarse & Fine controls with LFO mode
* Genuine Rogan USA knobs (hex keys included)
* All Through-hole build – no SMD components!
* Width: 12HP
* Depth: 43mm"

Dannysound Cali OSC & Thru Zero EN129 OSC with Thonk

Superbooth 2018 - Dannysound Cali OSC & Thru Zero EN129 OSC with Thonk Published on May 8, 2018 DivKidVideo

"Steve from Thonk takes us through the two new Dannysound west coast / Buchla style oscillators at Superbooth 2018. There's the Cali OSC based on the 258 with some new features and also the Thru Zero EN129 which is similar to a single oscillator from the famous 259 dual complex oscillator. There's more features and options, great sound and of course it will be DIY first and foremost."

Note this is the first post to feature Dannysound. Superbooth video above and one from Thonk on the Cali Oscillator:

Dannysound - Cali Oscillator (Thonk)

Published on Jul 24, 2018 Thonk Synth DIY

Available at Thonk

"The Cali oscillator is a new and improved version of the classic Buchla 258 waveshaping linear FM oscillator with an additional pulsewidth modulated output.

The oscillator features the classic Sine to Square and Sine to Saw wave shaping with dedicated CV control. The Cali Oscillator differs from previous versions of the 258 in that it has a 3-way position switch rather than 2-way. This new middle position features a bonus waveform that will shape from a pulse into a kind of triangular trapezoid shape. The shaping control is more unpredictable in this middle position – it can be thought of as an extra bonus waveform!

There are dedicated inputs for linear and logarithmic FM and the Cali also adds a Pulse output with it’s own width control and PWM CV input. The behaviour of the pulse output can be affected by the position of the waveform switch and wave shape control.

The module features Coarse and Fine frequency controls and an LFO mode, LFO range is accessed via an LED pushbutton that also acts as the LFO speed indicator – the button will light up when the waveform moves through its positive cycle.

Features:
* Sine to Saw/Square Waveform Output with CV over wave shaping
* Pulse output with voltage controlled PWM
* Linear FM with attenuator
* Logarithmic FM with attenuator
* Bonus ‘trapezoid’ output
* Coarse & Fine controls with LFO mode
* Genuine Rogan USA knobs (Hex keys included)
* All Through-hole build – no SMD components!
* Width: 12HP
* Depth: 42mm"
