Instruō - arbhar V2.0 Firmware Overview

video upload by Instruō

"Note: WATCHING THIS ENTIRE VIDEO IS NOT NECESSARY!
I've curated it with chapter markings to encourage hopping around to specific features/examples. I hope this will work as a video reverence in conjunction with the full written manual.

A dedicated tutorial on how to upgrade your arbhar can be found here:"

arbhar - Firmware update tutorial

The arbhar V2.0 firmware update is here!
In 2019 the launch of the arbhar heralded a new generation of granular processing in Eurorack. Sampled audio can be chopped into tiny grains, scattered, shaped, re-pitched, reversed, and layered for an endless range of audio manipulation from seamless frozen tones to mutated acousmatic madness. Each grain sounds with its defined specifications. When modulation is used, the "per-grain parameter" definition allows for true polyphonic layering.
With the introduction of firmware version 2 (2023) comes a complete rewrite of the entire codebase to implement both technical and conceptual improvements that will enhance the entire user experience of the arbhar. We have ensured that the overall feel of the module has been preserved as much as possible. Advances in efficiency and expanded features will allow the arbhar to explore many more sonic and musical spaces.
Meet the Lexer Method 2.0.

• Up to 88 stereo grains between two granular engines, allowing for polyphonic layering
• Mono and stereo input configurations
• Six 10 second individual audio buffers
• 1 volt per octave pitch tracking
• On-board random pitch deviation and grain direction probability
• Scan mode, Follow mode, and Wavetable mode
• Stereo pan, feedback delay, and reverb configurations
• Built-in condenser microphone
• Analogue input pre-amplifier and limiter
• Audio analysis with onset detection for automatic audio capturing
• Includes 2 HP passive CV Expansion module and 4GB USB flash drive
• User-definable configuration for complete instrument customisation
• Save, Load and Clone audio between layers
• Curate/recall entire performance configurations with up to 42 Scenes.
• USB import and export functionality

INSTRUO HQ TOUR // a fantastical place of Eurorack, design, manufacturing, music studios & more!

video upload by DivKid

"Join us for a tour of the Instruo headquarters up in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. You learn how to caffeinate properly while you're at it.

It's an amazing place with music studios, subSine academy and band rooms all wrapped around the design, prototyping and manufacturing of Instruo products. This video was recorded as part of a larger multi day visit for some other 'activities' (top secret for now) so while the large part of the tour is shot at once on a quiet Sunday you'll see a few other clips from the days prior."

Instruo Troika | Life after Retirement

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"One of the first Instruo modules I am aware of is Troika. It's a three oscillator VCO that started as a hand made heavy brass panel module and was officially retired a month ago. There aren't much videos around except for the official 'how it's made' and a handful of videos from a time where Eurorack was still a niche (six years ago). The official lifespan is 2016-2023. Honestly, I never had much interest in the Troika until I gave it a try last Jamuary in VCV Rack. It sounds absolutely amazing and it immediately went to my wishlist. When Instruo announced the module's retirement I got one.
My module has serial 22 so I can't help wondering how old 'brand new' really is.

When I started to make this video, my mindset was 'Moog/Subtractive/Eastcoast' because of the 3-Osc design. I recreated the mimimoog layout with a few special guests like Maths and Clouds, and AJH Transistor Ladder as the iconic Moog filter.

It's been three days of enjoying cool music and this morning I realized how important a 3-Osc VCO is for approximating 99.9% of the best 80's sounds ever. It sounds more like an ARP 2600 because of all the patchpoints (and Maths as the LFO). It got even better when I swapped the ladder filter for Instruo's 1047 multimode filter which was part of the older ARP 2500. So my personal conclusion is that Troika is a super interesting VCO for anyone with a love for the 70's-80's and want to go a few steps further than the Moog and the ARP can offer.

I was able to buy a used one about a year ago, but decided not to do it, because I did not see any added value to the stuff I alread have. I can now say, if you find a reasonably priced used one, it's worth it."

Instruō Discontinues troika: A brief history

video upload by Instruō

"It has finally happened...
The troika is being retired from production!
The last 15 have been built (as of August 2023), and will be making their way out into the works.

It still completely staggers me how far Instruō has come since I was designing solo, and building individual modules in the spare bedroom.
To everyone who has shown support through the years, purchased modules, made modular music, and been part of this weird, niche-of-a-niche industry:
Thank you.

Instruō today has grown into a full on creative collective! I get to work every day with the most incredible team of developers/artists/makers.
We've come a long way, and in so many ways it feels like we're just getting started.
The troika was the OG! It was the first to gain "Instruō" as a branding.
For anyone that is newly familiar with Instruō:
Hello! :)
I hope you'll enjoy what we do.
If you're interested, this is where it all began:"

Instruō Superbooth23: THE MOVIE

video upload by Instruō

WARNING: This video contains flashing lights which may not be suitable for people with photosensitive epilepsy (There's also a wee bit of swearing!)

This is a movie that follows the creative crew that is Instruō.
In 2023 the company travelled to Berlin to present at the Superbooth trade show/festival.
At the time of these captured events, the expanded team at Instruō numbers 20+ personnel.
Pretty much the entire crew goes to Berlin as we show off who we are and what we make.
This is a look behind the scenes of a Eurorack modular synthesiser manufacturer as they present at the world's best Synth-show!

Directed by Mathew Pieraccini
Edited by Jasōn H. J. Lim

"This 'documentary' is the beginning of a new form of content that I'm (Jasōn) working on in parallel to the endless stream of new instruments that we're developing.
It's a long time since it was just myself working solo back in the early days of Instruō
(~2016).
I now have the privilege of working with some of the most fun and creative people I've ever met.
We collaborate now as a creative coop. My hope is to showcase more who we are, what we're doing and how things work at the workshop here in Glasgow.
I've always been a fan of behind the scenes content so my plan is to open thing up a bit to showcase my collaborators and what they do inside and outside of roles at Instruō"

NOISE AND DRONES!!

video upload by Signal Sounds

"I thought I'd make an experimental noise and drone rack. My noise sources are the Apollo View Allscillator and the Worng Electronics Acronym. They are going into the Tangle Quartet VCA and being fed through the Apollo View Rabbit Hole - which, by the way, is also capable of generating sound with the feedback switch. From there we go into the stereo filter Parallax. I'm using the Instruo Cnoc (an ablsolue gem of a module) do to cover most of my modulation needs, with the help of Pam's Pro Workout. Beads is always on hand to add some weird magic, and the FX Aid is bring the huge reverb trails.

How to recreate the Hologram Microcosm in Eurorack (for just 10x the price)

video upload by Dexba

"Do less with more! Wasn't that the saying?
With this patch I wanted to recreate a simple two-voice setup, using two different sequencers but the same oscillator (the Instruo Cs-L), and then run them through a sort of Hologram Microcosm remade in eurorack.
As for the PROs, a little tune at the beginning, then the patch demonstration/tutorial/patch breakdown/something else I don't remember, and the final complete jam at the end of the video.
Enjoy! 🧡"

Instruō Lúbadh & Cš-L // Tape Looper as a Glitch Ambient Machine

video upload by Dexba

"This video follows the live stream from two days ago!
A single voice from the Instruo Cs-L is being fed four different sequences coming from the TipTop Buchla 245t, passing through the two mixers of the 257t, being once again mixed into the Instruo [1]f before entering the Instruo Harmonàig. A touch of reverb coming from the Strymon Starlab, and the recording stereo into the Lubadh, using both the decks.
Tape emulation is cranked up, as the input volume, to get all the tape flavour even while passing through, and after a good amount of recording, you will hear the modulations ready to mangle the tape, overlaying some glitchy madness to the otherwise relatively calm background.
I hope you'll enjoy it! 🧡"

Mysterious Eurorack Modular Piece | Instruō Arbhar, Lubadh, Cruinn, Harmonaig, Lion, øchd |

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching!
Took a month off from making YouTube videos, and moved into a new space in Brooklyn, from where you'll see a lot more content coming soon. I have some cool videos planned for the summer, but instead of having a strict upload schedule, like I had for the past two years, I'll just focus on making good content, and release videos on a rolling basis, and not be bound to a specific deadline. Hopefully, I'll average a video per week, but some videos may take longer to plan/produce, so just letting y'all know."

Instruō Arbhar and Säich // Granular Hulusi 葫芦丝

video upload by Dexba

"Here it is: I am coming out with my modular setup, constantly evolving, and heavily biased on the Instruo (or better: Instruō) side.
Very few modulation sources, since they're kinda hard to come by, and let's admit it: it is more fun buying stuff like Arbhar, Lubadh or even the Strymon Starlab, rather than splurging one thousand euros on some VCA. Or not?
Anyway, here I am back in the eurorack, and this time I am here to stay.
There will be a lot of educational videos too, especially focusing on the Buchla - Tip Top module series, and obviously Instruo too :)
Hope you'll enjoy, and be excited like I am!"

Superbooth 2023: Instruo - Tagh Ladder Filter and Aradh

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Jason from Instruo at Superbooth 2023 and he showed us two new modules that they have recently launched, Tagh the 4 HP clock management module and random voltage generator, and Aradh, a transistor ladder filter that is a successor to the first filter that they had released. The new transistor ladder filter is crammed into 6 HP and is an update to the original filter which had been out of stock for a while. Jason explains that he kept the same circuit topology but it is now all discrete transistors with some slimmed-down features. It also has a VCA and filter built into one which combines East Coast and West Coast uses.

The VCA can be set to either pre or post filter, and there is a built-in strike impulse envelope and it can be used for both traditional subtractive or more West Coast Plucky territories. More info can be found on the clock management module and random voltage generator and transistor ladder filter on the Instruo website.

Aradh Price: 329 GBP

Tagh Price: 269 GBP"

Instruoducing: Instruō - àradh and tágh

video upload by Instruō

Additional videos below.

"Announcement time!

Here are two new old modules :) I have been trying to get these in production for quite some time now. Delays in supply chain forced these to the background for too long.

àradh is a new take on a transistor ladder filter and fills the role of fat "East" Coast subtractive filter as well as adding a dedicated low-pass gate (LPG) to the Instruō range. Plus some other quirks!

tágh is not a V2 but is in fact the OG module that I had in mind for the name a long time ago. It's a 4HP powerhouse of modulation sources and clock utilities.

Please check out the full Overview videos for both àradh and tágh now :) [below]

In addition I would like to introduce the first production range of Instruō spacer panels. Available now are 1HP, 2HP, 4HP, 6HP, 8HP, 10HP, 12HP and a very special limited run of 14HP.

The 14HP panel features a glorious picture of my Greyhound Winston wearing his jammies. https://gal.org.uk/
"GAL is a registered charity in Scotland (SC031027) that rescues and rehomes Greyhounds and Lurchers throughout Scotland. "
A donation of £7.50 will be made to GAL for every panel sold from the limited batch.

Hope to see you all at Superbooth this year!
Cheers

Instruō - àradh Overview

video upload by Instruō

Here is the àradh.
tràigh again!

By popular demand – an exciting new take on the legendary transistor ladder filter. Introducing the Instruō àradh, the long-awaited successor to the first Instruō low pass filter, tràigh. Expanding on tràigh’s classic functionality, àradh adds a VCA with pre or post-filter routing options, an envelope follower, a comparator gate, a strike input with variable decay time, and a plethora of user-definable voltage-controlled parameter combinations.

Whether you’re looking for voltage-controlled resonance, pre-gain filter saturation, noise gate functionality, dynamics processing, or even an envelope follower, àradh can get the job done – a true sound-shaping powerhouse in only 6 HP.

• Low pass filter and VCA
• VCA pre/post-filter routing options
• Strike input and button

Instruō - tágh Overview

video upload by Instruō

You can find the initial overview video from back in 2021 here, and a few user videos in additional posts here.

"This is a module I've wanted to release for years!

The Instruō tágh is a “Swiss Army Knife” modulation source. It features an analogue sample and hold, white noise generator, digital random voltage generator, morphing LFO, and probabilistic trigger generator, all with a unique phase-adaptive tap tempo functionality.

After many iterations of random voltage generation experiments, tágh’s 6 algorithms were meticulously curated to meet the needs of the designer. Once realised, it was quick to see its importance in small and big systems alike. These 6 random algorithms include Classic Stepped Random, Repeatable Stepped Random, Chaos, LFO, Probability-Synced LFO, and Downsampled LFO.

At only 4 HP, tágh is a true modulation workhorse.

• Analogue sample and hold
• Analogue white noise generator
• Six digital random voltage algorithms
• Built-in bias and attenuation controls
• Smart tap tempo follower with manual button
• Steady and rhythmically-relevant clock generator
• Internal or external clock options of analogue sample and hold

Make Noise & Mood

video upload by Aleatoric Machine

"An ambient-ish eurorack modular synthesizer patch (with pedals!), featuring:
Make Noise 0-Control, XPO, QPAS, Mimeophon, Maths, modDemix, LxD & XOH
DivKid/Instruo øchd
Strymon AA.1
Chase Bliss MOOD mkII & Dark World

All of the sounds in this patch originate from a single VCO — the XPO — sequenced by the 0-Control. The percussive voice is the stereo square wave output into into the QPAS, then the Mimeophon. The filter envelope comes from the envelope output on the 0-Control. The gate output for the last step in the sequence on the 0-Control strikes the !!¡¡ input on the QPAS. The XPO and QPAS are modulated by different LFOs from the øchd. The smooth voice is the mono sawtooth output into the the 12 dB filter of the LxD, then the LxD’s 6dB filter, then the AA.1 to interface with the MOOD and Dark World pedals. The 12dB filter envelope comes from Maths, triggered by the gate output from the 0-Control. The 6dB filter is controlled manually with an offset from Maths. Both voices go through the XOH directly into my camera (listening to the final mix, it could have used a limiter, but oh well).

I start with the MOOD 100% dry and the 6dB LxD filter completely closed, so all you hear is the square wave and delay from the Mimeophon. I slowly open up the 6dB LxD filter and increase the amplitude of the filter envelope on the QPAS. Then I bring in the wet channel of the MOOD in reverse slip mode, tuned up a fifth, which introduces some harmony and counterpoint. I play around with the MOOD mix and the filters for a while, then turn up the clock on the MOOD before bringing in the loop channel, also in reverse, for more harmony and polymeter. Then I start bringing the filters back down, while increasing the mix of the MOOD. I turn the clock back down and turn the filters down and the mix all the way up until all you hear is the backward loop from the MOOD. That’s it!"

Instruōctional Live 3: Signal Sounds Session 2023

video upload by Instruō

"In February I had the pleasure of performing in the brand new events space hosted at Signal Sounds, Glasgow.

I performed a live set and followed it with a workshop/patch breakdown/Q&A.

It was a great space to perform and present in. Great audience with some excellent questions!
The performance was included as my personal contribution to the recent compilation published on the Instruō Record Label.
Please check it out here:
https://instruo.bandcamp.com/album/in..."

"When I first started Instruō I was simply making things to make sounds with, with only a vague direction in mind. As things grew and people started showing interest in my designs I settled on the motto/descriptor:

'I make sounds with the things that I make to make sounds with'
Skip forward to current day Instruō (2023) and the team has grown considerably. Instruō has evolved into an operation so far beyond what I could have imagined possible. The motto has naturally evolved to:

"We make sounds with the things that we make to make sounds with"

My hope with this record label is to showcase some of the work of my colleagues and collaborators. I have the absolute privilege of getting to work daily with some of the most creative people I've ever met. I get to do what I do because of the incredible support of Instruō users and team that Instruō has become.

I hope you enjoy the sounds that were made with the things that we made to make the sounds with.

Ceismography | Creating a 'drum sequencer' with Instruo Ceis ADSR

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I posted this video right when a huge earthquake hit Turkey and Syria so I decided to take it down and give it a rest. But I do think it's worth sharing since you can 'abuse' any module with gate/trigger outputs to contribute to rhythm patches. Ceis has triggers for every stage so it's great fun to just patch it into a drum module or sampler. Not to mention it's an ADSR so you can create all kinds of synced movement and modulation."

Morphagene // Mega Modularis' First Reel

video upload by Mega Modularis

"OK! Here we go, this is my first try with the Morphagene, I was very excited to finally receive this module, which has been on my wish list for quite a while, so look out for plenty of Morphagene exploration coming soon. I started with a nice loop from Rangoon on the Lubadh and proceeded to explore and figure out how the Morphagene works, and you can come along with me for the journey! This was my first Reel, although I think after filming this I realised I’d made a new reel and still had an empty first reel, but hey, I’m still learning and exploring how this module works! My goal was to create some nice ambient soundscapes from a relatively simple melodic loop, and I think I accomplished that, what do you think? Of course the Morphagene was helped along my Mimeophon and Beads, some of my favourite ambient making modules! Anyway, sit back & enjoy! MM.

Patch Notes:

Audio: Loop from Big T Music Rangoon on the @instruo Lubadh
Main Voice: @MAKEN0ISEMUSIC Morphagene
Audio Processing & FX: Mutable Instruments Beads & Make Noise Mimeophon
