Dune Expectral - Brazilian Synth Tracks Featuring VBrazil Systems, RECO-SYNTH Pogona 3, Novation Peak & the Moog Grandmother

Dune Expectral

Note this the first post to feature the RECO-SYNTH Pogona 3.

Playlist:

1. Sunset Synthesizer - Eurorack and Moog Grandmother Brazilian Jams
Be welcome! I am very happy to have you here.

This is a challenge, I am looking for new timbres with my synthesizers, but I decided to look for them in different places, in this case it was a wonderful sunset in the city of Sorriso, Mato Grosso, Brazil.

All sounds, modification were created in real time. I used the Moog grandmother to make the bass, the Eurorack modular Vinicius Brazil to create the melogic part, the Novation Peak for the leads, and Pogona 3 by Arthur Joly to create the percussive part, the whole drum is 100% analog.

The melodies are coming through ableton live only this is digital. And of course this wonderful video captured by La Isla Filmes.
2. Wave Folder - JAM SYNTH - Eurorack Modular, Novation Peak
In this jam I used Vinicius Brazil's Wave Folder with Lizard 3. The sound it generates is just amazing. The drums used Arthur Joly's Pogona 3.
3. Quantum - LIVE SYNTH - Eurorack Modular, Moog Grandmother, Novation Peak and Ocean Verb.
I used a Motu microlite to connect Novation Peak, Moog Grandmother and my two modular synthesizers VB and Pogona 3. Ableton live only sends the signal via midi, the rest I did in real time by the synthesizers using the modulations and a WAVEFOLDER to create distortion. I love this!
4. LIVE SYNTH - Eurorack Modular, Moog Grandmother, Novation Peak
I used a Motu microlite to connect Novation Peak, Moog Grandmother and my two modular synthesizers VB and Pogona 3. Ableton live only sends the signal via midi, the rest I did in real time by the synthesizers using the modulations and a WAVEFOLDER to create one distortion.
5. POGONA Synthesizer -- Fantastic World Vol 2
Pogona 3 is a synthesizer made in Brazil by a guy named Arthur Joly. I recently acquired it and am getting to know the toy.

Synthesizer Build part-21: ARP2600 LOWPASS FILTER (4072).

The best sounding filter of any I built so far! With verified stripboard layout.

A word of warning right at the start; this is an advanced project, not for beginners. You need to know your electronics and you also need to have a good multi channel oscilloscope.

Erica Synths DIY Kits Go Open Source

via Erica Synths

"We created Gerber files for PCB-made front panels and did slight changes in module design in order to get rid of custom and rare components, however some modules still require rare ICs which are available here.

Projects are available on Github and each project folder contains complete information and files to build a module: schematics, Gerber files for a front panel, Gerber files for PCBs, BOMs, component placement with values and designators and assembly manuals (please note that some manuals are designed for older module versions). By making these projects open source Erica Synths accepts third party use for personal, educational or commercial purposes.

Erica Synths will not provide any support for these projects so please refer to forums (Muffwiggler) for information on build nuances, troubleshooting, part availability or alternatives.

Open source projects are:

Behringer's CoolAudio Reveals V3397 Analog Synth on a Chip

"Coolaudio who designs highly sophisticated semiconductors, has just released a complete voice (2 multi-waveform Oscillators, a VCF plus 4 VCAs) on a single chip. The chip is an improved version of the Curtis CM3396 and will allow us to create high-performance analog poly synths in a very compact manner. Stay tuned..."

The 3397 likely refers to the CEM3397. via Wikipedia:

"CEM3397 same core design as CEM3396 but with separate external signal (noise/sub/wavetable) input and VCA to mix stage and additional Pan VCA and L/R output stage. Originally labelled MS1215 and designed for Marion Systems MSR-2. Relabeled as PA397 for DSI."

"CEM3396 Microprocessor Controllable: Wave-Shaper x2, VCF, VCA"

The CEM3396 was used in the Oberheim Matrix-6/6R/1000, and Cheetah MS6.

Behringer owns CoolAudio so expect to see the V3397 in an upcoming synth or two from them. They will be available for others to purchase as well.

Sound Semiconductor Announces Two New VCA Chips

"SOUND SEMICONDUCTOR SPINS OUT SINGLE AND DUAL VCA CHIPS

VCA Range now spans Single, Dual, and Quad Versions

June 23, 2020 – Sonora, California – Sound Semiconductor today announced single and dual channel VCA additions to its product lineup, the ProCircuitTM SSI2161 and FatKeysTM SSI2162.

VCA’s – or Voltage Controlled Amplifiers – are used for automatic, remote, or CPU control of audio gain and/or attenuation in such systems as music synthesizers, dynamics processors, noise reduction systems, effects processors, and mix console fader automation; as well as design of voltage controlled filters, exponential voltage to current converters, and many other basic audio building blocks. Sound Semiconductor’s SSI2164, a low noise and distortion VCA with four independent channels, was introduced several years ago and has been embraced by the audio community.

In pursuit of even better performance, the newly launched SSI2161 internally parallels all four SSI2164 channels for a 6dB noise improvement, offering the lowest noise among VCA chips. Likewise, the SSI2162 internally parallels two pairs of SSI2164 channels for 3dB lower noise.

All VCA’s have exponential control with a –33mV/dB gain constant. Current inputs and outputs allow a wide range of input and output resistance to suit design needs, and a unique mode control permits selection of class A, AB, or intermediate biasing of the gain core to optimize noise versus distortion characteristics. A gain range from +20dB to –100dB is possible.

The SSI2161 and SSI2162 are both housed in a 10-lead Shrink Small Outline Package (SSOP). Pricing at 1000 pieces is $0.84 for the SSI2161 and $0.99 for the SSI2162. Both are available now.

Sound Semiconductor is composed of musicians and technologists with the goal of developing affordable, high-performance integrated circuits for music creation. For more information, please visit www.soundsemiconductor.com."

Cereal Instruments - 'mesh' (EXPLANATION & DEMO)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

"(TO SKIP PAST EXPLANATION STRAIGHT TO DEMO: 1:27 )
'Mesh' is allows you to passively, mix, mult and attenuate in a small 8hp size.

Available soon on our reverb shop. [find their modules here]

NOTES:
Note 1 - 'mesh' is fully passive. Whilst this means that the mults are not suitable for pitch or sometimes triggers (where a buffered mult is needed), it means that it doesn't take up a power slot, it's skiff friendly, and a very low cost and easy DIY build at just 24 componants.
Note 2 - 'mesh' is suitable for both audio and cv signals.
Note 3 - What colour should production model knobs be? Answer in the comments below."

via Reverb

"Multi Utility Passive Eurorack Routing Solution

'Mesh' allows you to passively, mix, mult and attenuate in a small 8hp size.

At its core, 'mesh' is 6 attenuators. However, each row's set of 3 inputs are normalled together so that it can act as an attenuatable passive mult.
Also, each column has it's top output normalled to the bottom, allowing you to mix the top and bottom rows when nothing is plugged into the top.

This means 'mesh' can be, for example:

6 attenuators // two attenuated three-way mults (that can be mixed or separate) // one three-way mult and three attenuators // two dual input mixers and two attenuators

*to name a few :) *

Additionally, 'mesh' is fully passive. Whilst this means that the mults are not suitable for pitch (where a buffered mult is needed), it means that it doesn't take up a power slot, it's skiff friendly and makes for a great quick or beginner DIY build.

-As it is passive, it is recommended that 'mesh' is only used with professionally produced modules. We cannot be held responsible for any damage to products."

Also available as a DIY kit.

Cereal Instruments THUMP // Vactrol Based LPG & VCA with distortion (Eurorack module)

Note this is the first Cereal Instruments post on the site.

"'thump' is a versatile vactrol LPG & VCA with distortion. 'Thump' allows you to send two signals through a gritty vactrol amp with low pass gate modes & plenty of gain pre & post distortion."

It's also available as a DIY kit. The following is the build video:

And an overview by DivKid:

DivKidVideo

"Here’s the new THUMP Eurorack module from Cereal Instruments. It’s a 6HP Vactrol based LPG / VCA with added distortion and character. A rotary switch let’s you select VCA mode and 3 increasingly steep filtering options. There’s two inputs with a crossfader, CV input for the gate level and a make up gain control. It distorts and adds a quirky character easily but backing off amp CV and gain lets you clean things up.

Robaux 3PT

robaux

"The Robaux 3PT is a multimode three-channel control voltage generator."

And a demo from Synth Diy Guy:

"I make a song using this cool Cyclops of a multimode modulation source on every track!"

via Robaux

"The module offers seven different modes. These include a performance tool, chord generator, random generator, quantizer, sequencer or LFO. The modes can be changed by pressing the mode button in the top right. The ring-shaped display shows which mode has been selected.

Tripot
In Tripot mode you can control three parameters of your Eurorack with just one knob - perfect for live performances. You can set the voltage of the large knob individually for each channel. Whether from 0V to 5V, 5V to 0V or something in between. With the offset parameter you can determine whether the change is parallel to the big knob or whether it is moved to the beginning or the end. You can use the CV input with an external CV source instead of the big knob.

LFO
In LFO mode you can use the module as a triple modulation oscillator. The big knob sets the main frequency. Each channel has an adjustable frequency multiplier. You can blend smoothly between sine, triangle, sawtooth and rectangle and shift the phase of each waveform. You can use the CV input with an external CV source instead of the big knob.

Chord Progression
In chord progression mode, you can output triads. Connect it to a CV keyboard and play harmonious chords. You can select the root note between C to B and set the mode between major and minor. The seven matching chords are placed on the white keys of an octave. With the variation control you can spread the notes. For each channel you can set whether the notes are quantized within an octave and also set a note offset to generate atonal chords.

Quantizer
In the quantizer mode you can use the module to quantize incoming notes on up to 25 different scales. Connect a CV keyboard and you will always hit the perfect key! Each channel can use a different root key and scale. The individual scales are divided into five banks. In each bank there are five different scales. It takes some practice to find the right scale, but it is a great way to quantize CV on notes.

Random Generator
You can use the module as a random generator. Plug in a trigger signal to generate three different random voltages. You can set the minimum and maximum random voltage per channel. The voltages can be output linear, or as notes in the scales chromatic, major and minor.

Sequencer
You can use the module as a step sequencer. Connect a clock source and let the sequencer play melodies with up to 8 steps. You can set the note values from trimmer 1 all the way clockwise to trimmer 4. The middle trimmer 5 defines the length of the sequence. The sequencer outputs the linear voltage on channel one. The voltages are output chromatically on channels two and three. The sequence will be split if you reduce the number of steps and output separately on channel two and channel three.

Euclidean Rhythm
You can also use the module as an euclidean rhythm generator. Add a clock source to the CV input and the tripot will output trigger signals. You can define per channel how long the sequence should be and how many pulses are sent in this time. With the rotation parameter you can move the sequence in time."

New ElectroTechnique TSynth - DIY Teensy Synth

ElectroTechnique

Note this is the first post to feature ElectroTechnique.

"TSynth is a DIY synth based on the Teensy 3.6 MCU board. It is six voice polyphonic with two oscillators and very comprehensive control and options. Patch saving and recall, three MIDI in options and USB digital audio. It is open source and the PCB and front panel are now available to buy on Tindie. The intention was that the cost of parts to build this synth are around $99 and it should be a serious instrument. There are many features and full details are on https://electrotechnique.cc

All sounds are directly from TSynth with built-in stereo chorus - Youtube tends to muffle the sound, the bass will go very low. I'm hoping that end users will produce better demos and contribute to the code."

Specs via ElectroTechnique:

Oscillators

Six voice polyphony (last note priority), two oscillators per voice, detunable with +/- 2 octaves range, Sine/ Sample & Hold (like tuned noise)/ Square/ Sawtooth/ Ramp/ PWM/ Var Triangle/ User waveforms and level
Pulse Width/ Var Triangle can be set for each oscillator with PWM by dedicated LFO or from the filter envelope
Pink or white noise level
Dedicated LFO for pitch mod (can be retriggered by note on), Sine/ Triangle/ Sawtooth/ Ramp/ Square/ S&H waveforms
Pitch can be modulated by filter envelope (+/-)
XOR ‘Ring Mod’ (creates lots of harmonics with certain waveforms)
Unison with all twelve oscillators detunable from each other
Polyphonic Glide with variable time

Filter
State variable 12dB filter (SVF) with continuous mix between LP and HP (provides notch filter) and BP
Cutoff freq and resonance

Cutoff can be modulated by dedicated ADSR envelope (+/-), dedicated LFO
LFO has same waveforms as pitch LFO (can be retriggered by note on) and rate can be set to match MIDI clock (tempo) with variable time division (1,3/4,1/2,1/4,1/8…)

Amplifier
Dedicated ADSR envelope
Volume for DAC output
Effect amount and mix - currently for stereo ensemble chorus rate and mix but could be set up to allow choices in programmer

Programmer
160x80 IPS colour display
Encoder with button for data entry, Back button for menu navigation
Save and Recall buttons for storing patches, holding Recall initialises the current patch to match the panel controls. Holding the Save button takes you into a patch deletion page.
The programmer makes the synth very flexible with future possibilities for changing User waveforms, alternative filters, alternative effects with further parameter settings.
