A Relic From The Roots Of Electronic Music - Oramics on NPR

Listen On All Things Considered

"The Oramics machine is the creation of Daphne Oram, the first director of the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop and a central figure in the evolution of electronic music.

'Forget everything you've ever known about synthesizers. This machine has no piano keyboard or anything like that. It looks like the sort of thing that a mad inventor would make in his shed.'" [her shed - mad inventor Daphne Oram below left]

"Stunning Electronic musical Instrument, beautifully Modified in all the right places by Dave Squidfanny.....

The OMNICHORD is a unique Analog (Analogue) Synthesizer originally built in 1981 by Suzuki. It's part Electronic Touch Harp, Part Chord Organ and Part Analog Drum Machine with Rhythms with Accompaniment and a built in speaker. It's been used by David Bowie, Jarvis Cocker (from Pulp) and Flight of the Conchords.

This is the original Gold & Brown Omnichord, looks very Classy.

There is nothing quite like a psychedelic Omnichord.

Needless to say, this very special machine has had some stunning modifications and is now capable of producing a whole range of other-worldly sounds previously un-imagined by the original engineers......

Each Section of this Omnichord synthesizer has been modified in the form of Upgrades, Expanded Features, New Sounds, Additional Modulation and Expressive Control.

This includes Metal Touch points, New Knobs, New Switches (including Rotary Knobs) & Beautiful Flashing LED lights......

LED Lights are moused in Chrome Bezels and modern LED's are used in Warm White, Yellow, Amber & Red, to suite the Brown and Gold case of the Omnichord.
The LED brighness has been set to comfortable levels.

The Various new modifications and features are breifly described below
------------------------------------------------------------
METAL TOUCH POINTS -
An array of Shiny Metal touch points allow a whole new way of playing the Omnichord.
Use fingers to connect the points on the Right of the machine with any of the points on the left of the machine for bleepy Squarewave tones, Bass tones and Chord Tones.

The top Row of 12 Points will change according to which Chord is being played, and will always stay in tune with the chord, in a similar way to the harp. The Bottom Row of 4 Metal Points are Bass tones, and will modulate when using the Omnichord in Accompaniment mode.

7 Points on the right will connect the tones through various parts of the Omnichord's analog circuitry, and produce different effects, ranging from straight amplification, crunchy Distortion and Ring Modulated & Filtered synth tones.

3 x Touch Points on the right of the the machine can be used to trigger the Omnichord's analog drums with fingers, and also make screechy analog oscillation noise from the 'Hats' circuitry.

To the right of the Harp plate are an additional pair of Touch points which can be used to modulate the Omnichord's pitch. These provide really expressive control and can be used for similar results to a whammy bar on a guitar and will produce Hendrix-esque mind-bending.....

Metal Touch Points are firmly Bolted to the case & Securely Glued with no chance of them ever coming loose.

ANALOG DRUMS -
The Omnichord has a built in Analog Drum machine, and provides warm punchy Rhythms with Chord / Bass Accompaniment. There are 6 preset patterns (Rock, Latin, Swing, Etc.). These patterns cannot be edited, however I have installed 6 x Metal Switches above the rhythm buttons which allow these preset patterns to be combined & Locked with each other. This allows a whole range of unique & complex Rhythmical Structures to be created......
4 New Soft-Touch Knobs Allow the Analog Drum sounds to be tweeked. Controls affect Decay and Resonance for the Bass, Snare, Claves and Hats.
A cool feature with this Omnichord is that the Analog Drums can also be played with your fingers by using the Metal touch points on the right of the machine (see start of video).

An additional Switch has been added to this machine, just above the Chord Volume Knob, which will mute / Un-Mute the bass line.

LFO Modulator -
Additional LFO circuit has been installed in this machine to allow very impressive modulation capabilities..... The Large Knob is used to alter the LFO RATE, the signal can then be used to drive the Omnichord's Pitch, which will affect the Chord, Bass, Harp and Touch Points. It will not affect the tempo or the rhythms, which makes it a very useful feature for performance. A custom Gold Knob Changes the LFO Rate & Black & Grey soft-touch knob controls the LFO Pitch depth. When turned fully anti-clockwise the LFO Effect will be turned completely Off.

The LFO also has a small flashing bi-colour Green & Red LED Light which indicates the Rate.

SONIC GLITCH -
This is a very special feature for this Omnichord, which produces a psychedelic array of unique techo-esque sounds from the Omnichord's preset Harp / Chord & Bass.
Sounds range from Bubbly Echos, Sweet Arpeggios & Syncopated Modulation to De-tuned Notes, Dark Ring Mods & Watery Dis-chord.
Many of the Glitches create subtle effects and cross-modulation, some create dramatic wierdness and analog effects.

Use the pair of Silver Rotary Knobs on the right of the machine to select the required 'Glitch', and the metal toggle Switch to active the effect. Each Rotary knob can be used individually or both Knobs can be used at once for increasingly dramatic results....
Once the required effect is selected, the switches can be used as part of a live performance.
There are a total of 20 Sonic Glitches which are spread over both Rotary Switches.
A bi-colour LED will light up Green / Red to indicate that the glitches are active."

Fluidus 8 Promo

"Promo video of the Fluidus session held in the Contemporary Art Museum of Malaga (CAC) with the collaboration of "Las Flores No Lloran" making loops with her voice and rhythm with her drawing pad connected to a contact microphone.
Sometimes full of noise & feedback, sometimes just sounding ambient and quiet, but allways flowing accross that place, the CAC, an old wholesale market built in the 40's and now converted in an art container.
At the end Palomoa (Las Flores no Lloran) said to me "It's been a journey" Totally agree, so... Come on! Take a ride.

Bob Moog Foundation Announces impOSCar2 Controller Raffle Touch Digital Controllers™ and GForce Software Unite in Tribute to Moog Legacy

"ASHEVILLE, N.C. – September 19, 2011 – A raffle to benefit the Bob Moog Foundation begins today. Two lucky winners will each receive the new impOSCar2 Controller from Touch Digital Controllers and an entire suite of five virtual instruments from GForce software—a prize package valued at nearly $2,500. The raffle will continue until all 500 tickets have been sold. Because the BMF will be awarding two complete packages, each entry has a 1 in 250 chance of winning. Tickets are $20 each, or you can improve your odds by buying six for $100.

Raffle tickets are available from the Bob Moog Foundation’s Web store. Be sure to enter before all 500 tickets have sold out. Two winners chosen by a random-number generator will be announced once all 500 tickets are sold. The winner will be announced within 24 hours after that time. Raffle participants should check the Foundation’s website and social media outlets to learn when all 500 tickets have been sold and who the two winners are. The winners will be contacted by email.

The new impOSCar2 Controller provides a physical user interface for both the standalone and plug-in versions of GForce Software’s acclaimed impOSCar2 soft synth. The combination of software and hardware offers the sound and functionality of one of the most sought-after analog/digital hybrid synthesizers ever made—Oxford Synthesizer Company’s OSCar—brought up to date with automation, effects, 16-note polyphony, and tons of patch storage.

As a tribute to the memory of Bob Moog, Touch Digital Controllers donated not one, but two impOSCar2 Controllers to the BMF. One is produced in a hand-finished natural mahogany and the other in ebony black on oak. These beautifully made controllers deliver plenty of visual and tactile feedback to make programming impOSCar2 a pleasure, just like programming the original OSCar but with total recall. With 101 high-resolution knobs and buttons, every parameter is available from the controller’s front panel to remotely operate the software. In addition to its dedicated impOSCar functionality, the controller can be configured to control any software instrument that supports MIDI Learn.

“The impOSCar2 Controller is our first product, and we are proud of what we have been able to achieve with this handcrafted music instrument,” said Richard Lawson and Kent Spong of Touch Digital Controllers. “As synthesists, and as a manufacturer, we have been deeply inspired by the one man who pioneered the whole thing: Bob Moog.”

Released in July, GForce’s impOSCar2 breathes new life into the popular previous version, first launched in 2004. New features include more comprehensive modulation routing, an improved arpeggiator, ring modulation, panning mono and poly unison modes, and more than 1,000 signature patches. Add nine filter types, six portamento modes, and a programmable additive synthesis grid, and you have one powerful soft synth.

Want more? The BMF’s raffle winner will also receive licenses for M-Tron Pro, Minimonsta, Oddity, and Virtual String Machine, which realistically emulate the Mellotron, Minimoog, ARP Odyssey, and numerous polyphonic string synthesizers, while adding dozens of innovative touches. In addition, GForce Software has included the ChamberTron and OptiTron Expansion Packs for M-Tron Pro.

BMF Executive Director Michelle Moog-Koussa said, “Through the ImpOSCar2 Controller, Richard and Kent bring their love of vintage synthesizers into the design and ethos of this very special piece of handcrafted hardware. Bob’s goal was always to give musicians the highest level of expressivity, and his interface design was a big part of that. The construction of the ImpOSCar2 Controller echoes that commitment to musicians. Our many thanks to Richard, Kent, and the team at GForce Software for sharing their life's work with us. Their support is a tribute to Bob Moog's legacy and to the work of the Bob Moog Foundation.”

The Bob Moog Foundation (www.moogfoundation.org) honors the legacy of synthesizer pioneer Dr. Bob Moog through its mission of igniting the innovative and creative spirit at the intersection of music, science, and history. Its projects include Dr. Bob's SoundSchool, which brings electronic musical instruments into the schools to teach children science through music; the Archive Preservation Initiative, an effort to preserve and protect the inventor's extensive and historic archive; and the future Moogseum, an innovative educational, historic, and cultural facility that will bring Bob Moog's spirit alive to ignite innovation and creativity in children and adults. It will be located in Asheville, N.C., in the years ahead, pending necessary funding. The Bob Moog Foundation is an independent, donor-driven 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is not formally affiliated with Moog Music, Inc."
