Roland System 100m | Nexus

Published on May 8, 2020 Alex Ball

Break down video further below.

"Following on from the 'closer look' video [posted here], here's a full performance with the Roland System 100m from 1979.

I tried to demonstrate the versatility of a setup like this by making things like full drum kits, squelchy basses, phased and delayed textures with sequenced filter mod, synth guitars, ring mod nastiness, audio rate down-sampled formants, voltage processed LFOs, lush Jupiter-esque polyphony, a singing and gliding lead, sounds that can't really be described and more.

Many sounds were also created in groups together at one time because you can!

The eagle eyed among you may have noticed that there were actually five 191-J cabs used in the video, although only four at one time.

Across those cabs we had the following modules (and duplicates thereof) and I used every single one of them at some point in the demo.

110 VCO / VCF / VCA
112 Dual VCO
121 Dual Filter
130 Dual VCA
131 Output Mixer
132 Voltage Processor / Mixer
140 Dual Envelope / LFO
150 Ring Mod / S&H / Noise / LFO
165 Dual Portamento
172 Phaser / Audio Delay / Gate Delay / LFO
182 Sequencer
184 Polyphonic 4CV Keyboard*

The only original modules not present are:
173 Signal Gate / Multi
174 Parametric EQ

*The original 184 keyboard arrived in the mail right when I was finishing recording and filming this track, so you only see me using it in one section at the end. I thought I'd explain this for those of you wondering why I used the Arturia KeyStep Pro for almost all of the keyboard duties instead of the original top-of-the-line keyboard. (Side note - the new KeyStep is fantastic).

Other gear used:
Roland RE-201 Space Echo
Roland RE-5 Digital Space Echo
Arturia KeyStep Pro
Ibanez RM-80 Mixer
Ibanez Jem 7DBK
Alvarez ABT60 Baritone Acoustic
TR-808 clap sample
TR-606 Hi-Hats
Oberheim DXa (final choruses)

How-To: Sequence and control synths using the Arturia Keystep

Published on Oct 8, 2019 littleBIGsynths

"Hey guys! 🙂 Here is another tutorial on the Arturia Keystep! In this video, I show you guys how to use the "Kbd Play" function to sequence and play synths live at the same time. This is a nifty little feature that I think some people may have overlooked/missed! I have used it in a few jams and demos in the past and have received questions regarding this topic nearly everytime. lol So, I thought it would make a neat video.

I think the Keystep is a great keyboard and can be a great center piece of a simple setup: The simplicity and connectivity, along with some poly synths and a drum machine... definitely some fun to be had. lol"

Lunar - Ambient Noise 🎄 (Arp 2600 m // Waldorf M + Red Panda Particle 2 // Arturia Keystep Pro)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"For the last video of 2023, I really wanted to spotlight the raw sound of the amazin ARP 2600 M 🤩
So throughout the whole track, you'll only hear the sound coming directly from the ARP 2600 M without any external effects, though I did use its onboard spring reverb (+ a bit of EQ/comp where used for mixing purposes).
Contrary to my previous (which was the first) video featuring the ARP which was an uptempo track, no beats or kick here! Only the ARP and the Waldorf M (+ Particle granular delay).
The same track from the Keystep Pro is sequencing both synths.

As you can see, I use some patching in this one for the ARP:
 - The VCF output is going through its preamp input to make the distorted sound you gradually hear (it's being played in parallel of the dry sound coming out from VCF output)
 - I also used the LFO to modulate the filter and pulse width of oscillator 2
 - I did did some patching as well, in order to play portamento with one of the ARP's oscillator (using the voltage processor "Lag Time")

* Hardware used *

// SYNTH:
 - Korg ARP 2600 M (semi modular analog synth) - RAW sound
 - Waldorf M (8-voice hybrid digital and analog wavetable) + Red Panda Particle v2 (digital granular delay)

// SEQUENCER:
 - Arturia Keystep Pro"

Arturia KeyStep Live Unboxing and Exploration by AfroDJMac

Streamed live 4 hours ago AfroDJMac USA

"I just got the Arturia KeyStep controller and sequencer. I've been looking for a fun sequencer for some hardware gear, and I think this is going to do the trick. In this video I plan on unboxing, setting up and testing out the KeyStep. The gear I'm using it with is the Korg MS-20 Mini, the Korg Volca FM, an iPad, Ableton Link, Ableton Live and Push 2, and probably Korg's SyncKontrol app. Let's see how it goes!"

Sisters 👩‍❤️‍👩 (Vermona Perfourmer Mk2 + H9 // DRM-1 Mk4 + Bigsky + Lethargy // Arturia Keystep Pro)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"As I've been posting a couple of Youtube Shorts lately, I made this "very long" video this time (the longest one on the channel, other than the "Going live at home video" https://youtu.be/qgIxJwxzqlA 😊).

For this one, I used 2 analog instruments (Perfourmer Mk2 and DRM-1 Mk4) sequenced by the Keystep Pro (KSP) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list....
I made heavy use of a lot of cool features of the KSP like: polymeter, randomness, step skip, looper, transposing within scale, scenes, individual drum mutes, quick toggle between 2 drum patterns (this one is a bit of a trick of mine) 🤩

So the track starts with the KSP's Track 4 sequencing voices 3 & 4 of the Perfourmer (going through the H9 using its tape delay effect, where you can clearly hear the nostalgic "wow & flutter").

I then unmute the KICK and SNARE (played by the DRM-1) abd BASS (played by the Perfourmer, but going out DRY by its seperate audio output).

The other tracks are then unmuted and I start to transpose live the played sequences (you know I love this feature, right?).

Further on I use the KSP's "Scene" feature to load different patterns for the "chorus" part.
You can hear me playing with some parameters of the DRM-1's CLAP sound, which is going through the Dreadbox Lethargy analog phaser (using the DRM-1's handy insert jack!).
I also trigger manually a couple of times the MULTI voice of the DRM-1 (which is going through the Bigsky reverb), for the build etc.

The track then heads to a more "experimental" outro part consisting of 5 step patterns (where I shifted the analog phaser from the CLAP insert jack to the HIHAT2 insert jack).

* Hardware used *

// BASS:
- Vermona Perfourmer Mk2 Voice 1

// SYNTHS:
- Vermona Perfourmer Mk2 Voice 2, Voices 3&4 + Eventide H9 Max (tape delay) + Pill (ducking pedal, triggered by the KICK from DRM-1)

// DRUMS:
- Vermona DRM-1 Mk4 (8-voice analog drum synth) with Strymon Bigsky reverb (on the MULTI's output) and Dreadbox Lethargy analog phaser (on the CLAP's output in insert mode, then HIHAT2)

// SEQUENCER:
- Arturia Keystep Pro"

Sky Fly 💫 (Vermona Perfourmer + Lethargy + H9 + Particle + Bigsky + Pill // Tanzbar // Keystep Pro)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"Wishing you a happy New Year for 2023 ! May it be filled with music 🎶, peace 🕊️ and love💕!
After experimenting during the last month of 2022 by publishing 7 'Shorts' let's start 2023 with a more than 2-minute video in order to compensate a bit this special month of December 😅

So for this one, only the Vermona Perfourmer was used for the synth parts (Bass, Arp & Pads) and MFB Tanzbar for the drum parts, with both instruments sequenced by the Arturia Keystep Pro.

* Hardware used *
- SYNTH: Vermona Perfourmer
- BASS (Voice1) Dry
- ARP (Voice2) + Dreadbox Lethargy (Analog Phaser) + Eventide H9 Max (Vintage Delay engine)
- PADS (Voices3&4) + Red Panda Particle 2 (Granular Delay / Pitch Shifting Pedal) + Strymon Bigsky (Reverb) + Pill (ducking pedal, triggered by the kick from Tanzbar)
- DRUMS: MFB Tanzbar

Eurorack, Keystep & A Fallen Hero (Berlin-style Improvisation)

Published on Jun 16, 2019 DreamsOfWires

"Old school Sci-fi inspired jam using a Eurorack modular system including AJH Synth modules (see gear list) and 2 Arturia Keysteps. One Keystep is sending pitch to the XVCO, which is filtered by the Sonic XV, to create a continuous drone, but it is simultaneously transposing the other Keystep's sequencer (via Midi). This sequencer is is controlling the 3 AJH VCO's, which are sent to both the Ladder filter and Gemini on separate audio channels. The Gemini is being used as a stereo filter here, in Dual mode, both sides being modulated in opposition to create stereo movement. All 3 audio sources are then mixed in real time using AUM on the iPad.

I'm dedicating this to one of my childhood heroes who passed away this month - actor Paul Darrow, whose charismatic, witty, and vividly memorable portrayal of the character 'Avon' in an old UK sci-fi TV series called Blakes's 7 has stayed with me throughout my life. Ironically, I re-watched the entire series just recently. I like to think he escaped the final gun battle, and made it away on the Liberator (ship) to some distant refuge with a cargo-hold full of riches.

Help me to keep my channel going by purchasing my music or supporting me on Patreon:

Gear used:
AJH Synth MiniMod system with 3 VCO's, 2 VCA's, Ring SM, Sonic XV, Ladder and Gemini filters, Dual Contour Generator, DH-ADSR (as an LFO). Frequency Central XVCO (drone) & Wave Runner (LFO).
Arturia Keystep x2.
Recorded into AUM on an iPad with EOS2 reverb. iConnectAUDIO4+ audio interface.
Eurorack cases made by me.
Filmed on a LUMIX GH4.

Next album: 'Live' single-take recordings, no overdubs, all analog instruments. Most tracks are based on past compositions, but re-recorded and re-imagined, as I've wanted to do so for a long time. Most tracks are complete, but I'm in no rush."

ARTURIA MICROLAB | TRAVEL MIDI CONTROLLER WITH AMAZING KEYS - Taetro

Versatile 25-key MicroLab offers high quality keys, travel-friendly features, powerful included software, and integrated cable-tidy.

Music tech pioneers Arturia have announced a new controller keyboard that excites both new users and experienced professionals alike. MicroLab is a small-scale MIDI keyboard with smart design features that you can take anywhere.

MicroLab Key Features
25 “Slim Key” velocity sensitive keyboard
Octave, hold, and MIDI channel select buttons
Capacitive mod and pitch bend strips
Protective rubberized shell
3 color options
Integrated USB cable storage
Includes 3 great software titles: AnalogLab Lite, UVI Grand Piano Model D, Bitwig Studio 8-Track

What makes MicroLab so unique?

THE KEYS
MicroLab features the same professional slim-keys as their industry standard KeyStep controller. The keybeds found on budget controllers are often not very inspiring, but the 25 expressive, velocity-sensitive keys on MicroLab are simply a joy to play. The hold button gives you instant sustain, and by holding the shift key, you can access the “Chord” mode, letting you program in a chord and replay with just one finger.

THE FEATURES
The rubberized shell protects MicroLab from and bumps and scrapes when you’re on the move, and also features a recess that perfectly fits the USB cable, letting you store or pack it easily. MicroLab also includes capacitive mod and pitch controls that work in the same way that touchscreens do, these also let you swipe through and select presets with a tap. You can also quickly switch MIDI channels via the dedicated knob and numbered keys.

THE SHAPE
Arturia have designed this controller to work with you, and not get in the way. Because the cable is recessed, you can push it right up against other gear in your studio without cables getting in the way. It’s the width of the average plane and train tray table, and the shell stops it from sliding around. The keys are also recessed slightly into the body, nothing sticks out, so there’s nothing to catch when you slip it into your backpack.

THE SOFTWARE
MicroLab includes 3 great software titles for free:
Analog Lab Lite
Explore 600 fantastic presets taken from Arturia’s award winning V Collection series. Analog and digital synths, classic organs and pianos.

UVI Grand Piano Model D
A beautifully sampled Steinway for you to play using MicroLab’s expressive, velocity sensitive keys.

"MicroFreak receives new oscillator and more in 2.0 firmware update

On top of announcing KeyLab Essential 88 and KeyStep Pro at NAMM 2020, French audio pioneers Arturia have also revealed a surprise update to their incredibly popular MicroFreak digital synth.

The MicroFreak 2.0 update adds several exciting new features and functions, refines some existing ones, and fixes a few minor bugs.

New Features
New Noise oscillator: morph between particle noise, white noise, and a metallic noise that’s reminiscent of a synth cymbal. An exciting new voice that will open up powerful new drum and percussion possibilities in MicroFreak.

Chord Mode: by holding the Paraphony button and playing some notes, you program the chord, then replay the shape with a single key.

Scale quantization: In the Utility settings, you can activate scale quantization to your favorite scale. When activated, the “white notes” on the keyboard play whichever scale you have selected. No more wrong notes!

Sequencer streamlining: in 2.0 firmware update, you’re now able to easily copy Pattern A to Pattern B in an instant.

Matrix initialize: before 2.0 firmware update, if you wanted to clear the Matrix of all routings, you’d have to manually do it. Now you can just hold the Shift and perform a long press on the encoder, and it will clear!
64 New Presets: Loads of exciting sounds to explore using the new oscillator and features.

Improvements
MicroFreak now displays visual feedback even when Local Control is off.
The synth’s Local Control now also translates USB to MIDI Out.
The release of currently playing presets are now cleared when switching to a new one.
The Record LED now blinks on each beat, instead of on 16ths.

Thanks to MicroFreak’s digital mind, the team at Arturia will be able to offer more exciting updates and improvements like this over time, ensuring that MicroFreak is always fresh and relevant.

To update your synth, simply connect it to your computer, load up the Arturia MIDI Control Center, and hit the 'update' button for MicroFreak."

Jasper Wasp, DX7II and TR-909 clone test with HQ Sound!!

Published on Mar 30, 2017 Todd Murray

"Here I am using an Arturia Keystep to clock my big MFOS (DIY) sequencer and run the DX7II (off screen) on MIDI. The MFOS sequencer is triggering the 909 (DIY) clone triple toms and kick. The Wasp (DIY) is played freestyle, no sequencer or trigger.

Ya, I know the video sucks, but this is about the sound of the Hexinverter Nein-oh-Nein PCBs and the wasp. I recorded the sound off the mixer and then synched it to the video track using Adobe Premiere. I am ever amazed at how I can run multiple digital and DIY analog synths with the Arturia Keystep.

- MFOS Sequencer (4 x 16 CV/Gate/Trigger) large blue unit at top of screen

- Jasper Wasp is the black unit I am tweaking

Published on Aug 1, 2016 DreamsOfWires

"I've just taken delivery of an Arturia Keystep, which I bought to replace a Beatstep and a Qunexus, which I recently sold. This is a simple composition using the polyphonic step sequencer with the keyboard in 'Play' mode, so that notes can be played over the sequenced chords. It was recorded entirely on the iPad using iSem, Altispace reverb and Audioshare.

The footage is from a trip to Duxford Imperial War Museum last week, apart from the planes landing at the end, which was from a visit there last year."

(MU) Frequency Central

(MU) Frequency Central feat. Massive Modular Bundle: osc sync, PWM, Keystep histrionics, the works

2 x System X Oscillator
System X Lowpass Filter
System X Dual VCA
System X Dual ADSR

...which together forms our classic MU Massive Modular Bundle!

Well, I was going to program a sequence into the fabulous Arturia Keystep https://www.arturia.com/keystep/overview (accept no imitation), but soon realised that I was having far too much fun just wiggling and jamming out, so I hit record - the rest is history.

The patch is quite interesting, as there are two VCAs available, I've patched sawtooths via VCF and VCA, and pulses directly to the second VCA. There's a negative ADSR output patched to the second VCA, so the PWM'ed sound fades in as the VCF and VCA sound fades out.

As you will already know, these lovely VCOs feature onboard LFOs which I'm making full use of for a bit of vibrato, PWM sweeps, as well as that huge oscillator sync modulation.

Processing is via MU Stasis Leak (off camera) for some huge delay action.

If you have read this far please comment 'Huge Monster!'"

(MU) Frequency Central feat. Little Melody, Raging Bull, System X Oscillator, Stasis Leak and more!

"Finally got around to producing a MU modular video. This one feature the following Frequency Central MU modules:

Wave Runner
Little Melody
System X Envelope
System X Oscillator
Raging Bull
Stasis leak

I'm using the Boss Dr-55 (bottom left) as a master clock only. The clock is patched to Little Melody, System X Envelope, Wave Runner and also Stasis Leak (via a clock divider).

I've set up a little riff on Little Melody which is being played by the System X Oscillator/Raging Bull/System X Envelope synth voice. I'm occasionally toggling between two modes for some variation.

System X Oscillator's sawtooth and pulse waveforms are patched into the audio inputs of Raging Bull. I'm doing some manual tweaking of it's octave rotary switch. There's also a bit of fat creamy PWM going on

To modulate Raging Bull's cutoff, I'm using Wave Runner in it's sample and hold mode to modulate, System X Envelope, the triangle output of System X Oscillator, as well as some manual tweaks and twists.

System X Envelope is patched to Raging Bull's 3rd CV input, thus controlling both VCF cutoff and VCA openess(?!)/closedness(!?).

Stasis Leak is set to long delays, and is synced to the rhythm via a clock divider (off camera).

If you've read this far, please comment 'Fat and creamy'."
