Curated Instrument Selection
Quadra provides 4 robust instrument layers that can be used together to create striking and evocative performances. Each layer can be assigned from a selection of 30 multi-sampled sources including massive stand-alone systems like the Colossus, to popular small format systems like eurorack.


At the heart of each of Quadra's instrument layers is a powerful, multimode 64-step sequencer with MIDI effects, allowing you to quickly add rhythmic grooves, create arpeggiator sequences, add harmonies, and even quantize the incoming notes to specific scales. Choose a global rate, gate length, and max velocity, then customize your sequence with per-step velocity, link, harmonization, pitch offset, octave offset, gate, step repeat and panning. Save your patterns to disk as presets to share, or use the handy "copy-to" button to quickly duplicate your finished sequence from one layer to another.

Quadra includes a number of MIDI effect modules that allow you to embellish and augment your sequences in creative ways, including Euclidean Emphasis which adds rhythmic accents, MIDI Delay, Random, and Pitch Drift which enrich your sequence, and a scale quantizer that allows you to snap all notes to a scale of your choosing. Emu Modular for Sale

"I am selling a gigantic Emu modular that belonged to Mark Lindsay (Paul Revere and The Raiders). After leaving the Raiders, Lindsay worked on television and movie soundtracks and commercials. This modular was used most notably for the Shogun Assassin soundtrack. There are over 70 modules in this system, including 11 VCOs, 8 Filters, and 8 Envelope Generators. There is a full list of modules below.

It has been in storage for 30+ years, and is in good to excellent cosmetic condition. There are no cables included, so at the moment it is not tested. NYC modular synth expert Steve Masucci will be testing the modules, and will have more information by Monday. You can find more details about Emu Modulars here.

We are not interested in breaking this apart, and are only selling the entire unit, 4 cabinets + keyboard.

Historic Moog Modular Coming to Bob Moog Foundation Booth at NAMM 2019

Update: the original image I had on top appears to actually be an EMU modular. Thanks to Malte Steiner in the comments for catching it. I moved the image below for reference and moved the image of the current owner Walter Holland on top. I also added an image of Don Preston with the Moog system in 1975.

"We are excited to announce our return to the 2019 NAMM Show with an expanded booth presence celebrating our recently launched endeavor, the Moogseum. We will have two adjoining booths, 10310 and 10409, for the Foundation and Moogseum respectively, located in Hall A, the synthesizer section of the NAMM floor, with our friends from KORG, Casio, and Roland nearby.

As part of our Moogseum exhibit, and continuing our tradition of featuring unique, expansive Moog modular synthesizers, the Moogseum booth will be hosting a historic 1967 modular system previously owned by both Patrick Gleeson of Different Fur Studios and Don Preston of The Mothers of Invention. Both Gleeson and Preston will appear at the booth on Friday, January 25th, to pay homage to the synthesizer that helped shape their careers.

The modular is currently owned by Walter Holland of lauded Holland Synthesizers, designers of custom aerospace quality audio equipment. Holland and his musical partner Steve Leonard, keyboardist for The Cretones, will be demonstrating the synthesizer throughout the weekend.Holland’s monolithic four-tiered modular includes three prototype modules created by R.A. Moog, Co. in the late 1960s, making it a truly one-of-a-kind system."

Happy New Year Everyone!

What a busy year it has been in the world of synths.

This is going to be one doozy of a post, so bear with me. This post is a review of the year in synths for 2013. We begin with Tributes to Those We Lost This Year, followed by New Manufacturers & Makers, Older Manufacturers Added to the Site, New Gear Announcements, Top 10 Posts by Traffic,  My Standout Posts for the Year, and finally This Years' Synth Events. I did my best to keep things as short and concise as possible.

Let's begin with the hardest part of the post.

New Manufacturers & Makers

Starting last January, I decided to keep a running list of every new manufacturer and maker introduced to the site during the year.  This is something I haven't done before and I thought it would be interesting to see how many there were in the year.   It's easy to focus on the big synth announcements throughout the year, but what about all the new makers and brands? I shouln't have to go considerably into the significance of new designers on the scene, so I'll just say two things regarding them.  One, the number of new makers is a direct reflection on the interest in our scene, and two, these are the creators of new gear which directly translate into new designs not previously available to us.  Think about that for a moment.  These are makers and designs that did not exist before.  They are part of our synth history.  So what is the total count of new synth designers for the year? A whopping 113. Think about that a bit. One hundred and thirteen new synth designers and brands this year alone.

This album features a series of solo improvisations on modular synthesisers. On occasion some additional ancillary equipment was used (see below) to augment the sound. A video is available to watch entitled “Benge Mirror Systems” which documents the improvisations. Some of the tracks presented here were edited slightly for the purpose of creating a satisfactory album-flow

Tracklisting and description:

01 - Arpor. Created on a vintage ARP 2500 from 1971. In addition some reverberation (Emu Modular spring-type) was used and a monophonic digital delay line (Yamaha D1500)

02 - Mirroog. Featuring the Moog Modular 3C from the late 1960s. No other sounds used

03 - Mirrula. Created on a cloned version of the Buchla 200, designed in the 1970s in California, these modules are based upon the original schematics of Don Buchla’s circuits. No other sounds used

04 - Forror. The system used was a late 1970s Elektor Formant, a large format system made in Germany. In addition a vintage (1990s) TC Electronic M5000 dual reverberation system was employed

05 - Birror. Created on a vintage Buchla 100 modular system from the late 1960s. No other sounds were used

06 - Mirroha. Made with a 1977 Yamaha CS30. This synthesiser was Yamaha’s answer to compact complete systems such as the Buchla Music Easel and EMS VCS3. It contains 2 VCOs, 2 VCFs, 3 envelopes, an 8 step sequencer, 2 VCAs, LFO and other sundry elements. In addition, some reverberation and fx were added (Yamaha SPX90 phaser and TC Electronic M5000)

07 - Buchror. Another study on the Buchla 200

08 - Sergor. Made on the Serge Modular, a large 8 panel system containing mostly early ‘paperface’ modules, and some later STS-era ones

Emu VCO Range Switch Module

"VCO Range Switch Module! Here is the prototype (blank panel with acetate sheet) of the VCO Range Switches module. I produced the PCB for the Aviator and added the extra IC socket so that it would connect to the Emu Modular. It outputs 1 Volt increments meaning you can get instant Octave shifting. In my system I will pre-patch this rather than use the sockets. Question is would it be better not to have the sockets? If anyone is interested in getting one for their Emu Modular let me know. I already have the PCBs and about to get the front panels made."

2. Synthfest UK 2023: Calc And the Prophet X

At Synthfest UK 2023, we caught up with Calc from Sequential, and he gave us the lowdown on the Prophet X. Now, you might be thinking, Prophet X? Haven't we seen that before? Well, you're right, but this hybrid instrument has been quietly making waves in the music world. It combines digital and analog elements, with digital oscillators and a unique twist in the form of multi-sample-based instruments. Yes, you heard that right, it's not just your run-of-the-mill synth; it's a full-on sampler too, boasting an impressive 50 gigabytes of memory for your custom samples. You can treat it like a rompler, a sample player, or even use those samples as oscillators, creating a whole new realm of sonic possibilities.

"Here's the full high-res picture of my Emu Modular that I took in Aug 2010, just after KSR had immaculately restored it. This is a rather unusual system in that it was built from a kit, although the keyboard controller was the standard Factory unit. You may be able to tell from the picture, but this could operate up to 16 note polyphony so was powerful and sounded simply beautiful. This was I sold in 2011 to a huge Modular fan whom also had purchased some Roland System 700 block from me previously. I hope you like the picture :o)"

"Here is a nice picture of a Rhodes Chroma & Expander I sold to a very nice Austrian Surgeon/Synth enthusiast back in 2009. Both units were fully restored by Kent Spong of KSR....to perfection as always :o)"

THIRTEEN SYSTEMS by Benge

Thirteen years after the release of his original synthesiser concept album, Twenty Systems, Benge brings you a follow-up of sorts, the similarly themed Thirteen Systems, an album of modular explorations, showcasing his evolving fascination with these modular machines

The pieces were originally commissioned by the newly formed Modulisme radio broadcast, Philippe Petit’s project to bring the music of underground modular artists together and provide a platform for the burgeoning electronic modular music scene that has been building momentum in recent years

There is one significant difference in the approach Benge took in the creation of this new Systems album compared to his first incarnation. The previous album used overdubbing techniques to layer the sound of each synthesiser upon itself to build up the tracks, but on this album Benge took the decision to play each piece in real time, without overdubs or edits, creating each piece as a live performance. This meant setting up each instrument in advance and either letting it play along by itself, or interacting with it as the pieces develop in various ways. Each performance was filmed and there is an accompanying 60 minute video that goes with the album

Gear Costs

Ivan posted the following on AH. I thought it was an interesting perspective many of us seem to forget over time, myself included. I asked Ivan if I could put it up here and he gave the ok.

"Just an observation here since gear prices always seem to bring gasps from the audience. It may sound snobbish, but we've all got our opinions.

I started thinking about another forum post regarding Richard Lainhart and his Buchla 200e and Haken Continuum Fingerboard controller. Back around 1978 I worked with a club band that played the local circuit. Their keyboardist had the typical mondo setup. Hammond B-3 with Leslie 122, Yamaha CP-80, Arp String Ensemble, Minimoog, and a Clavinet. I think he had another synth too but I can't remember (maybe an Arp Odyssey). Oh, and Anvil ATA cases for everything (including the B-3 and CP80). This was 1978 and he had, roughly, $20,000 worth of gear. A new Corvette the same year was $11,388. I seem to remember the local university purchasing a mid-size Emu modular synthesizer in 1978 for $18,000.

Fast forward 30 years. Richard Lainhart has a $20,000 Buchla and a $5000 Haken Continuum. This is extremely rare equipment that most of us will never touch. Yet compared to a rock and roll keyboard or synth setup of the 70's or 80's it is inexpensive, especially when considering inflation (a 2008 Corvette is about $60,000). Even a brand new MOTM modular synthesizer is less expensive than a Emu modular was back in 1978.

Anyway, I know for most of us electronic music is a hobby (and an obsession, but that's beside the point). But quality gear still costs a few dollars. Even if you're using soft synths you get what you pay for in terms of computer audio interfaces. It's pretty simple; a Metric Halo or RME box sounds better than an M-Audio box.

My point? I see posts about Tom Oberheim's new synth and people think it should cost less than the new one did 30 years ago! Look, it still costs a lot to produce a piece of quality hardware. I'm getting tired of the bushing-less pots, cheesy construction, and other cost cutting done to turn good circuit designs into inexpensive "mass market" products all in the name of saving a few bucks. What happened to the brick shithouses that people used to build? There is a reason all of these Moogs, Oberheims, and others are still around and working. They were built well using decent components. And guess what; it cost a lot do build them that way. Nothing magical happened between now and back then to drastically reduce quality component costs.

I worked for one of the big pro audio companies that forever changed the price point for mixers. Were they good for the price? Yes. Did a $600 mixer rival the performance of a world-class studio console? No f'ing way, regardless of what the marketing department told you. Not in terms of performance, and not in terms of build quality.

Speaking of which, if do happen to have many thousands of dollars in gear, you might consider spending more than $100 on the mixer that you route it through..."

Blue Clavia/Nord Emu E-drum Drum Synth

"Emu E-drum Drum Synth, Clavia Edrum, with 4 8-bit Drum Cartridges

Up for auction is a vintage 80s Emu E-drum in working condition and includes 4 Emu/Clavia 8-bit E-drum cartridges (names of cartridges below), and original mounting hardware.

The E-drum was actually developed by Clavia DMI in Sweden, and provided drummers with a single, touch-sensitive pad drum module that offered 40dB of volume range with internal sounds generated from a removable cartridge (containing from one to four 8-bit samples on a 16kB EPROM). A variety of different sound cartridges could be purchased and interchanged in the E-drum, and an optional hardware assembly allowed modular construction of entire drum kits.

This Emu E-drum includes a pitch control, which tunes the pitch either up, down, or no effect (middle position). There is also a Decay control for the triggered 8-bit sound as well as a very warm sounding Treble and Bass controls. The E-drum can be triggered by striking the rubber head on the drum or providing a ¼” triggered input. The E-drum can be powered by two 9v batteries (internal), or can be powered by an 18v DC adapter with an 1/8” plug.

The Emu E-drum in this auction is confirmed working; trigger drum pad, knobs, and output are all confirmed working properly. Output is strong and clean and can be heard in the demo mp3 posted in the link below.

circuit bent e-mu xl7 command station w/ mm1 module

"this auction is for the circuit bent emu command station and the mm1 midi module the unit was purchased as a brand new instrument. the previous owner said the command station was used for only a few hours. i have confirmed this and the unit internally is pristine. all knobs, buttons, outputs, velo pads, ribbon, etc are in pristine shape and just like new. the outer shell was painted and salvaged from a emu mp-7. internally it is a xl7 and is absolutely in mint shape. i've had this unit for a few weeks now and can confirm everything is working perfectly both in mm1 and emu command station. this is a one-off offer and most likely will be the only one in existence

the following audio is several drum tracks played in realtime with a simple appegiator programmed for each sound. the emu sports 32 independant arpeggiators. the drums are then circuit bent and leads into a formant synth texture controlled with a wind controller.

Reopening of Musee de la musique

"The "Musee de la musique" in Paris has reopened yesterday after a long closure and among the good surprises is that the section "Musique du XX siecle," which did disappear from permanent display some ten years ago, has now been reintroduced.

Therefore for those coming to Paris, they can now admire some beautiful pieces of synthesizers (Ondes martenot, Moog modular, EMU modular, Eric Siday's Moog drum modular, Frank Zappa 's E-Mu modular, and many other rare pieces such as prototypes from... this link (it is in French, unfortunately I couldn't find the same in the english version of the site) and click on the following sentence (highlighted in orange); "Voir le diaporama des nouveaux espaces du Musée de la musique" There it will play a short diaporama and the fun really starts at image 10!

Update via micke in the comments: "The big E-mu modular seen on the right is most likely Frank Zappa's old one. He never used an ARP 2500 afaik.

The boxy thing sitting beside the VCS-3 looks like it could be a Synket. It sure would be great to see some high-res photos of that rarity."
