"Ombra Mai Fu" made on smartphones - by DigiEnsemble Berlin featuring Anna Gütter
"Uploaded by DigiEnsemble on Jan 30, 2012
Professional musicians try out how to make music using new technologies.
(Informationen auf deutsch unter http://digiensemble.de/ombra)
This video shows a performance of the famous aria "Ombra Mai Fu" in an experimental version accompanied on smartphones and tablets. The musicians´s aim is to try out how to make joint music on smartphones.
The sound you hear is all played live by the musicians and their smartphones. In this case we are playing on the app-instrument "thumbjam" for iPod touch and iPad. [iTunes link] By lifting and lowering the devices tone and volume can be modulated. In this way an expressive play can arise.
However, the DigiEnsemble Berlin plays more than classical music, its musicians experiment with a wide range of genres, play
heavy metal, avantgarde or compose own pieces.

Classical Compositions Played on a Waldorf Q by PolitiPatrizio

Playlist:
1) Bourrée n. 1 - dalla Suite inglese n. 2 in La min.
Googlish description below.
Buon ascolto."
Googlish:
"Many years ago, my uncle knew a good organist of the church of St. Boniface, in Arnstadt in Germany, is worth all called him '(John) ... there were those who called him "O !!!!! Sebastianoooo Sebastiaanoooo !!!", but that name is almost never answered. He was a German in every sense, serious and precise. One day my great-uncle and the organist found themselves talking to a good builder of harpsichords (a musical instrument is worth adored by the same ') who lived a few hundred kilometers, more precisely in Waldorf. It was said that he was able to build harpsichords with possibility "sound" and never heard of excellent quality. The John needed at that time a new tool for his pleasure, then took the opportunity to contact the manufacturer to get in Waldorf and build a brand new harpsichord, with all the tonal characteristics of which did boast. The manufacturer immediately said to John that good it would take many days to build such an instrument, but he had great patience in the meantime and could still amuse others with the tools he had. Years passed, the good John died, my great-uncle inherited from him the commission to withdraw this harpsichord once ready ... The Committee passed on from father to son in my family.
Until a few weeks ago I was directly contacted by a descendant of the "old" builder of harpsichords of Waldorf: the harpsichord was ready! As they say, better late than never ...
In these days I'll get in touch with family is worth the good 'to hear if any of them will claim ownership of the harpsichord. If I were in possession and I thought it best to record (to remember) a matter of running the instrument in a piece composed by John himself: from the English Suite No 2 in A minor, performed on the harpsichord Waldorf Bourrée 1. Happy listening."
2) Domenico Scarlatti - sonata in La maggiore K 212
Googlish:
"Not having heard from the family of John Sebastian, I am going to offer you a personal "review" of the sonata in question, by the Neapolitan Domenico Scarlatti (contemporary organist at Arnstadt), performed strictly at the harpsichord Waldorf.
A little 'history:
Scarlatti was born in 1685, the son of a famous Neapolitan composer inherits the influences of the school of the same name, became famous for the unique harmonic solutions, and that continues to this day boast of leading figures such as D'Angelo, Gigi D'Alessio Mario Merola etc..
His musical arrangement is also evident at an early age, but the heart often takes over the Mediterranean bringing unsavory characters to attend and places of dubious morality. The passion for the fairer sex, then sadly makes it "famous" tell us that some have had more than 500 fans, some say even 600, even though I personally think that the reason lies somewhere in between. Undoubtedly, a lover of international fame, he used to compose songs pay homage to girls who conquered; within a few years he found himself inundated with musical scores, without remembering those who were dedicated to the compositions. Certainly did not hold high regard of the maidens, often mistreated and called them all under the title "Oh sonataaaa !!!". What emerged was the idea of cataloging these compositions and go over a number preceded by the appeal from the initial and sometimes the name of the woman who was dedicated to the composition.
The rest is history.
He died in Madrid in 1757, following a settling of scores, by her husband of one of his many mistresses.
Happy listening.
PS: the purists will forgive the harmonization with progressions by fifths and octaves."
Buon ascolto."
Googlish:
"Here I am again!
After a period of intense daily life I felt the need to take a few minutes of relaxation ... of an ex ... a range ...
What better opportunity to present the Allegro of the Sixth Sonata - known as the Toccata, given the musical form - properly (I hope) I transcribed for harpsichord Waldorf?
I forgive a lot of the usual progressions, disagree with the "aggressive" pre-Romantic Harmony, 3 caused by percussion voices in support of the original melody, but the need to fully exploit the potential of the instrument in question requires some licenses.
Some also forgive the excessive speed in execution, the intent was to shorten lead times, and Toccata in question because it is well known to all, touch too long can cause serious damage to health, from myopia to 'absolute blindness! And I see we have this lily ...
Some biographical notes about the author of the composition:
Pier Domenico Paradisi was born in Naples in 1707. Belonging to the family of known criminal havens, after a life of excesses and crimes in 1746 was forced to move to London because of the continuous rivalry between Camorra clans which he belonged, where he posed as a teacher of harpsichord and singing under the name of Paradise , so as to hide its origins underworld. In 1770 he returned to Italy and there he died in 1791 at his home in Venice after a terrifying ambush by the clan of tesogli Scarlatti.
Happy listening."

This music created from a variety of styles between "classic" string orchestra up to the danceable R & B Act. We found that do not fit terms such as orchestra or band for the musical spectrum and describe our formation, therefore, as an ensemble. Most importantly us that the music interesting in his pockets instruments and sounds musical."

The analog inputs are quite noisy. De-noising uses quite much cpu.
Don't ever solder this much wires by hand. PCB services are your friend.
Prefer DDS over an R2R ladder.
Open bugs / flaws
Although the output is buffered by an opamp, the sound sounds distorted when using the PC's line in. If I conntect it directly to the speakers, the sound is quite clear."

Masterclass avec Michel Geiss (rencontre du 25 mai 2013)
For the French speakers out there. This is a follow-up to this video post from the event.

I switched each sequence into 'Walk' mode, which is semi-random and adds an element of chance in terms of how the 4 sequences will interact."

"The Modular Synthesizer Ensemble consists of a fixed setup of 12 Modular Synthesizers and a repertoire of compositions written particularly for the ensemble.
The ensemble members are changing from project to project and will be introducing and guided by Gammon to present the musical outcome live as an ensemble. Furthermore the project offers the possibility to relate on the local sociocultural conditions and develop a individual format. The process of sound generation with the analog Modular Synthesizer can be experienced and created by by the participants themselves. Proceeding from the individual sound material we will experiment, invent, try out, improvise, interpret and compose. A simultaneous inventing and performing process of electronic music is emerging, with the aim to interpret compositions and present them live as an ensemble.
The Modular Synthesizer Ensemble enables a similar challenge to experienced musicians, modular enthusiasts or people with no previous knowledge because of its unique musical and social acoustic experience. The focus during this sensual and musical process is listening to each other and a collective ambition.

A new performance from MATRIXSYNTH reader RADIOKLOW, known for his compositions with the Access Virus TI. Side note: his music was actually the tipping point for me in finally picking up a Virus TI2. I have analog and VA covered. RADIOKLOW's experimental use of the Virus TI proved it was capable of much more. But, enough of me. The above is a rehearsal video with some interesting visuals. The below is the actual concert. The composition was done with RADIOKLOW's students.
Published on May 18, 2018 RADIOKLOW
"This concert was given on Thuesday 15 May 2018 by the Philosophy and Electronic Music Workshop I created seven years ago. On this special occasion, we performed a show including music and a film.
Saturday 12th of may 2018, eight of the nine members of the Philosophy and Electronic Music Workshop I created seven years ago, gathered at my home to rehearse with me our concert of the 15th of may. This rehearsal appeared to us interesting enough to be presented to the public. Since the filming of it was only a work document consisting on a unique picture with nothing interested to be seen in it, we decided we would use here the film created to be shown during the concert.
Our theme was this year : 'Reason, Dreams and other deliriums'.
During the sessions of the seventh season every student worked on magic objects and created an original work. These objects and works are shown in the film. Various quotations of philosophers and poets about our notions give a written echo to the images and the music.
The music was performed on an Access Virus TI 1, Roland Fantom XR for the piano sound, acoustic instruments including : tibetan bowls, bells, indian cymbals, stones, marbles, various decoys, flutes and two electric guitars.
The musicians are :
Victor Chemla : Virus TI, various percussion instruments and decoys
Herménégilde Claux : Virus TI, various percussion instruments and decoys
Grégoire Lombard : Roland Fantom XR
Louisian Germain : Electric guitar, shaman drum, various percussion instruments
Valesca Goulmot : Various percussion instruments and decoys
Antoine Grimaud : Electric guitar
Clara Maeso : Various percussion instruments
Lucas Mollard : Virus TI, various percussion instruments
Foucauld Monteux : Flute, various percussion instruments and decoys
Marc-Henri Arfeux : Virus TI
As a bonus, you will find a composition I created and perform alone on a Little Phatty. This composition, exploring in the same field as the music for the concert, is called : Ritual of bowls."

Upcoming PS411 - EnvAmp Workshop by Antti Pussinen and Wolfgang Spahn
Antti Pussinen PS 411 Attack/Release generator & Opto-Vca
Published on Apr 18, 2017 Antti Pussinen - Previously posted here.
via Antti Pussinen.
"The Dynamics of synthesized sounds are controlled with a Voltage Controlled Amplifier, or VCA.
In a classical subtractive synthesizer arrangement the VCA is controlled through an envelope generator, allowing more interesting dynamic possibilities than just the on/off of a note gate.
Vactrol based Opto-VCA add an Attack and Release time automatically due to the relatively slow turn on, and off times of the led-ldr pair inside a vactrol. The ”opto” part of our VCA is a fast and accurate AC-Optocoupler, which adds a tiny bit of Attack time and Release tail to the signal, but not so much as a Vactrol would. We Decided to go with the optocoupler since factory made Vactrols are getting more rare and expensive, and also rolling your own is a good choice, the response varies due to LED and LDR types and manufacture tolerances.
The Paper Synthesizer PS411 adds more control to the Opto-VCA with Attack and Release control potentiometers. If both turned to zero, the module acts like a normal VCA, controlled by external CV.
If Attack or Release are adjusted, it affects the input CV before it controls the VCA. If CV input is a Gate signal, the envelope generator works like a normal Attack Release generator. Created envelope can be used to also control other modules view envelope output connector. A LED is used to visualize the envelope. A jumper in the board selects between long and short attack and release ranges.
The module comes also with an bipolar offset potentiometer for manually controlling the amplitude. It‘s powered with Eurorack standard +-12 volts or +-15 volts and uses Eurorack power sockets and 3.5mm jacks.
In the workshop we will build the PS411-EnvAmp. We learn the basics principles how the attack/release envelope generator works and how the optocoupler controlled VCA. And certainly we learn how to use the PS411 - EnvAmp.
All the tool and materials will be provided. The workshop will be held in English and German.
