Two New Synthesizer Evolution Books by Oli Freke

Details follow via the author, Oli Freke:

These two new volumes in my Synth Evolution ‘zine series were launched at last weekend’s SynthEast event in Norwich, UK. They are Volume 3: Modern Classics, and Volume 4: Modular Greats. I’ve moved into the 21st Century with these two! As ever, they feature my signature hand-drawn illustrations and are full of facts, figures and tech-specs:

Volume 3: Modern Classics

Synthesizer Evolution: From Analogue to Digital (and Back) author Oli Freke returns with a new volume in his Synthesizer Evolution A6 zine series. The first two volumes (Vintage Synths and Drum Machines & Samplers) focused on vintage electronic instruments from the 1970s and 1980s. Volume three moves into the 21st century, showcasing a selection of the most interesting, impactful, and—arguably—best synthesizers of the past two decades.

The synths in this book celebrate the vast range of sonic possibilities now available to musicians and producers. From analogue wonders to extraordinary digital creations, from tightly designed monosynths to open-ended polyphonic beasts, each one is more marvellous than the last! Also featuring ‘Desert Island Modular’ choices from Robin Vincent, Steve Davis, Panic Girl and more.

https://velocitypress.uk/product/modern-classics-synths/

Alesis Andromeda A6 on the cover.

Volume 4: Modular Greats

The modular resurgence of the past 25 years has been a wonder to behold. Where musicians were once chained to their DAWs, we are now liberated once again to wire, patch, and modulate in the real world, choosing from a mind-boggling array of options.

Modular Greats celebrates the fusion of art, logic, science, and serendipity in modular synthesis, highlighting some of the best-selling, most creative, and most impactful modules of the 21st century. Featured manufacturers include Make Noise, Mutable Instruments, TipTop Audio, Intellijel, Rossum Electro-Music, Doepfer—and many more!

Instruo Cs-L on the cover.

The Girl From Ipanema / 「イパネマの娘」 / Berglund Instruments - NuEVI with Modular Synthesizer

video by BANANA su

Berglund Instruments NuEVI demo
Main : Modular Synth controled NuEVI
Backing : Roland MC-101

"The Girl From Ipanema - イパネマの娘

・NuEVI/NuRAD IN端子
・Pitch CV OUT端子
・Breath CV OUT端子
・MIDI OUT端子

Googlish:

"The Girl From Ipanema --The Girl from Ipanema

Bossa Nova is fashionable !!!
Just by making the song selection Bossa Nova, you can transform yourself into a fashionable person ... !!!!!

My EVI is a CV model, but this time I tried to play it with a modular synth using the Eurorack CV module.

This CV module has
-NuEVI / NuRAD IN terminal
-Pitch CV OUT terminal
-Breath CV OUT terminal
-MIDI OUT terminal

NuEVI / RAD The MIDI terminal of is actually equipped with a breath and pitch CV output terminal (it seems that you should not call it MIDI if you install a signal other than the MIDI signal, but lol), and connect it to the IN terminal of the CV module. I'll use it.

I've been experimenting with this setting with the desire to get closer to John Swana's sound.
I used the GATE terminal to give it a moderate attack. "

Modular Tracks by Joseph Raglani - SYNTH-R Modular EMS SYNTHI Clone

Making an album pt.1 "Girl Dot You". from joseph raglani on Vimeo.

"Decided to chronicle the making of the follow up to Of Sirens Born. We'll see if I can keep it up. I'm just in the demo stage and getting some ideas down. What you see here is all played live (well with a few sequencers). I've found that long hair and funny hats help with this process.
I'm playing a Dave Smith Mopho keybord with a Tetra in tow. Doepfer A-100, Synthi-R, Moog Voyager Old School (sequenced by the MFB Step64) and the Tip Top Audio Z8000 is doing some modulation sequencing. Left hand is playing the melodic part, right hand is tweaking. I only say that because it's a little hard to see what's going on from this angle. Recorded Dec 6th, 2010."

Invisible Zoo Nobody's Girl

YouTube Uploaded by InvisibleZoo on Apr 19, 2009

Some old school synth spotting. Prophet Remote keytar at 2:56. KORG MS20 & Poly-61 amongst others. Anyone ID what looks like a racked white modular? Reminds me of Digisound but then again not.

"1984 music video of Nobody's Girl by Los Angeles synthpop band Invisible Zoo featuring members Doug Lynner, Andy Robinson and Bill Boydstun. For more about Invisible Zoo, including their new album In This Zoo, visit http://www.invisiblezoo.com."

And one more. No synth spotting in this one, just a song about a synthesizer man.

MMM Fable........ MMM03 JHVE

via John Van Eaton
"1st shot from way out in outer space as I examined and opened this strange case..................... (yes pretty cool I had a flat screen HD TV in outer space ..... almost looks like a hotel room in Los Angeles.........

It almost looks like a Kubrickian monolith, or something built in the Planet of the Apes............ but with such thin style and grace.....................

I went on a journey, oh so far away,
I called Mr. Mattson just to say,
"I know your modular's symmetrical,
but I am talking beyond the hypothetical,
in the theoretical, can you make my modular more mono dimensional ?"
"I'm to stow away in a leaky shallow boat,
and then to outer space, me and my synth must elope.........
But slight and thin it must be, (I'm not talking about synth babes on playboy TV)
but....... to be my outer space partner in symphony,
or roll in a small bed of cacophonous polyphony,
will you good Sir please be kind, & answerer me?"

Mr. Mattson soon replied, " Don't commit modular suicide,
I've heard thee well, and I shall make you something thin and swell"

"Is it a mint girl scout cookie ?" , I had to pry...............

" No, I made the Syntar I can not lie!"
"it is a case of delight, so svelte so thin so slight,
but it protects your sonic dynamite!"

So now I've reveled around the world, and Mr. Mattson's flag's unfurled,
I've returned from space, mountains seas and rivers,
Now 1/2 a Mattson- thin cover........... may it give you shivers.........."

X New Year - the first improv techno album from tamiX
video upload by tamiX (Nan Tang)

"Supporting tamiX, buy this album on Bandcamp: https://detund.bandcamp.com/album/x-n...

X New Year, the first album from tamiX, an artist skilled in improvising electronic music, records the live set at 024 in Beijing, a live house at Sanlitun, on the first day of new year night of 2022.

tamiX being an Buchla endorsed musician, played over 60-minute live set using rare Buchla 200e modular synthesizer system. It is an intensive exploration tamiX made to the music style she’s adept at: melodic techno, and created an unique tune integrating the features of experimental and musical.

To be affected by the distinctive glamour of tamiX, audiences should be in the live show, which is also the reason why tamiX barely released any record. As an electronic musician skilled in improvisation, compared with playing on the traditional music platforms, tamiX chose streaming video on YouTube instead, the leading medium in China and beyond the sea separately where audiences can watch all of her live show videos.

All things considered, the album X New Year includes the whole live show performance; meanwhile, the specific characteristics of tamiX playing electronic music improvisation are well demonstrated to its utmost.

Apart of the digital album, X New Year will be released as a special collector bundle, including a 44 pages photo book of tamiX's performance, and a USB sticker with more contents inside:

a) 60+ mins video of the performance
b) The trailer video
c) mp3 of the album
d) Uncompressed wav of the album
e) All photos in the photo book
f) Two picture of post cards
g) Pictures of the photo book
h) Cover picture of the album
i) Picture of my Buchla modules setup

Ken Stone Interview via VICMOD

VICMOD: Ken Stone interview
(click for the full interview)

"Ken Stone is highly regarded in the Modular Synth business. He is also "the guru" of the DIY synth community.
Ken has been involved with many companies throughout the years from Bananalog, Cyndustries, Elby Design and Metalbox to name a few. He runs his own company Cat Girl Synth (CGS) were you can buy Printed Circuit Boards (PCB)and build up your own system. If you are into modular synths you are sure to have at least one of Ken’s designs in your system.

I caught up with Ken recently at his home, in the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia, a place that resembles only what I can only describe as "The Tardis". I went in and time disappeared. You will see modular synths all around the walls at strange angles, vintage oscilloscopes and wires everywhere. I was convinced when I left his home I had indeed been to another galaxy."

Serge1973VCF Demo

Published on Jul 9, 2014 davidryle

"A MOTM format build of the famous Serge 1973 VCF. This is a Ken Stone pcb from Cat Girl Synth and is numbered CGS77.

The additions are the Hi and Lo Q resonance settings and a "low frequency" mode for slew of control voltages (DC).

The panel graphic maintains the Serge philosophy with a printed paper laminate on a metal panel. The obvious difference is the MOTM (Synthesis Technology) format.

This demo only demonstrates the 2 pole -12dB Low Pass mode. The filter also has a -6dB band pass and -12dB high pass mode which are very nice as well.

There are some background voices which I decided to include for temporal flavor. Everything is from the modular synthesizer except the echo delays which are a Lexicon and T.C. Electronic rack units after the modular.

Thanks to Ken Stone at CGS
