"What does this do?
This is a sound generator module with 3 oscillators + noise generator. This module is a complete mini synthesizer that can easily produce snare drum sounds. A 'trigger' signal is patched in order to hit the snare drum. The bottom row contains an internal mixer where you mix in 2 shell generator oscillators, one thud oscillator, and a noise generator.

The Noise generator can be used for your other modules. You can also patch into the discrete transistor vca, breaking the switch jack to replace the noise generator with an external audio signal (synth level).

The Filter on the 'Impact' signal path was carefully designed just for snare drum tone control. It sounds very nice. It will not self oscillate, but the Q control can go very high in frequency.

There is an accent control circuit in order to vary the loudness of the snare drum.

History of the design:

The Asteroid Snare drum started out on bread board as a TR 606 snare drum. That design only contains one oscillator, a transistor based noise generator, and a 'clipper' brute vca. It is a nice efficient old design, but it is too simple and boring. I decided to add (2) of the original oscillators, and replaced the noise generator with a digital based noise generator to make sure all production units were alike. The snare drum still was missing fullness, so I designed an addition oscillator called 'thud'. The poor vca from the original design was removing all the additional harmonics, so that was replaced by a discrete vca, and I added tonal controls to the IMPACT signal, and the THUD signal path.
All of this amounts to about 200+ smt parts. Far exceeding the original design. I don’t think there is another analog snare drum out there with the Asteroid Oomph.

Noystoise NTO2 Mini Joystick Synths

I have to say these are pretty stinking cute and do sound great. Via Noystoise:

"This is the latest set of NT(noystoise) series novelty synthesizers. following the overwhelming reception of the original NT01 series, it was pretty clear that if i build them, they will sell. the NT02 is simpler in many ways than the original NT01, but the sound and character are a bit more sophisticated than that of the NT01. the NT02 consists of a square wave VCO with chorus/delay, a white noise generator, a ramp LFO, and individual 12db resonant lowpass filters for the VCO and white noise generator. the pitch of the VCO is controlled by one axis of the VCO joystick, while the other axis controls the delay time of the chorus. the chorus circuit is basically just your typical PT2399 delay chip setup, except there is no feedback loop. the VCO is fed to the delay chip, and the delayed signal is recombined with the initial signal before the filter stage. the effect makes the VCO sound much bigger and warmer with the chorusing effect. almost like an old analog poly-synth with detuned VCOs. the white noise generator is your basic two transistor type found in many old synth designs. a common issue with the two transistor noise generators is that they require at least 9 to 10 volts to operate. that's just fine if you are using a plug in power supply, but when using a 9 volt battery, the noise generator usually wont work. in my case, the noise generator wouldn't sound with any less than 10 volts. however, the noise generator doesn't draw all that much current, so i simply used a 555 charge pump voltage multiplier to get the circuit where it needed to be. the problem i ran in to on the breadboard though, was there was some cross-talk from the 555 charge pump oscillator to the VCO, so i only used the 555 charge pump method for the first NT02(revA). for the others i simply buffered the VCO, and made a charge pump out of that. this way, if there was any cross-talk, it would be harmonized and unnoticeable. however, once the NT02 revA was built and working, the cross-talk was gone, so i guess it wasn't necessary. both the VCO and the white noise generator have their own respective filter with resonance control. the cutoff frequency of both filters are controlled by their respective axis on the VCF joystick. the center switch on the joystick toggles either the VCO or noise voice on or off depending on which joystick switch you press. each voice will remain on or off until the switch is pressed again. this feature was not included in the revA NT02. its voices are permanently on. the NT02's LFO is ramp shaped and can be set to modulate one of four parameters, or turned off. the LFO can modulate either the chorus delay time, VCO pitch, VCO filter cutoff, or the noise filter cutoff. on the revA NT02, the VCO pitch setting controls the maximum threshold of the pitch joystick, whereas the revB VCO pitch setting is independent of the pitch joystick. the LFO rate is controlled by the knob above the VCF joystick. the NT02 also has a volume knob, a 1/4 inch switching line out jack that bypasses the built in speaker when plugged in, and a center positive polarity protected DC jack that bypasses the internal battery when plugged in. the internal power supply is regulated, so any DC adapter between 9 and 18 volts will work just fine. unfortunately, unlike the NT01, the NT02 does not have CV inputs or outputs. the NT02 revA(black one) does have two 0-5 volt CV inputs for the VCO and LFO, but the revB models do not because their circuits' operating voltage is 8vdc instead of 5, which is kind of an unusual number... i would have liked to have scaled CV inputs that could turn 0-5 volt CV input to the necessary 1-8 volt CV input that the VCFs, VCO, and LFO require, but space was too limited. the inputs are in there though. i still kind of regret not including the ability to connect CV inputs to the NT02, but it is just safer this way. these were not intended as modular synths. they can be easily modified though, for any advanced users out there. hopefully these little synths do as well as the NT01 did so i can start on an NT03... the NT02s will be available at my for sale page until they are all gone. have a look, tell your friends about this BLOG!!!

"The MG output is connected to TRIG IN to create an endless loop (so we don't need the keyboard anymore for triggering the envelopes). The other MG output is used to clock the SAMPLE & HOLD to generate the random space bleeps. Both VCO's and the NOISE GENERATOR are used to create the sounds. The amount of noise from the noise generator is controlled by the control wheel (using the VCA and EXT SIGNAL IN). Additionaly an (external) delay is used to sound even better.

"Up for sale is one of our three beloved DNVO-1s from JMT Synth. This is his flagship model and the most requested desktop synth in our studio. For fans of Skychord/ KingCapitolPunishment/ Soma, though nothing in the 'noise/drone synth' category can touch the versatility and musicality of JMT's top shelf designs. Additionally, while the Skychord and Trogotronics synths are amazing in their own right, they are made using PCBs. JMT synths are 100% hand made, hand-wired and discrete, with no two sounding alike. This particular box was built to order by designer Tetsuji Masuda, and purchased directly from JMT Japan as a backup when our others (including the one with the blue status light in the video below) were tied up making otherworldly sounds for season two of a particular N__f___ series we worked on. It has seen no real use outside of testing. 100% hand made, hand-wired and discrete. CV input (VCO), 3 sub-oscillators, noise generator, 3-range VCF that can be tuned to the input signal, proprietary oscillator, military-grade build spec, can run on 1 9V battery or standard center-negative 9v PSU. The Portland percussion synthesizer has been designed as a drum complement to the Brunswick synthesizer. Like the Brunswick, Portland has been designed with affordability and flexibility in mind, allowing for the ultimate performance from relatively basic electronics. Portland is also presented as a "sandbox" for percussion and drum synthesis, giving several different analogue sound generation and shaping elements in a patchable unit. The elements are normalled together on the patchbay, allowing for minimal patching to arrive at a kit of drum sounds, but this normalling can be overridden for more complex drum sound synthesis.

The machine structure is divided into four sections:

The noise generator circuit is formed by four oscillators modulating each other and generates similar sounds to those obtainable with cross-modulation technique. Tuning the oscillator pitches allows complex variations in tone and granularity. The switch can be used to obtain a continous sound (HOLD) or to enable the the underlying INPUT plug (GATE). The INPUT plug accepts signals coming from LOW FREQUENCY oscillator or signals from any other OUTPUT plug, on which it acts adding timbral contents typical of the NOISE GENERATOR circuit.

ILL-LOGIC has four square wave oscillators. Oscillators pitch can be adjusted using the FREQUENCY knob. The first oscillator ranges from low frequencies to audio rate and is always active. The A-B-C oscillators have audio frequency range. When the switch is in A-B-C HOLD position the oscillators deliver a continued sound. If the switch is in A-B-C GATED position, a signal must be provided on the INPUT plug to obtain the oscillator sound. Any OUTPUT plug can provide this gate signal. Using the low frequency oscillator output to gate the oscillator will provide a pulsing sound. Connecting the NOISE GENERATOR output to the oscillator input allow a slight noise coloring. Using the OUTPUT of an oscillator connected to the INPUT of another allows oscillator synchronization.

[The Ring Modular] section features three ring modulator stages, each with two inputs and one output. It can process signals from the oscillators and from the noise generator. The OUTPUT plug can be used to provide the gate signal for the oscillator INPUT plug when the oscillator is in gated mode.

A four channel mixer allows volume settings of the signals connected to the INPUT plugs."

Envelope Generator
--------------------
Timings: 1uf Capacitor charge, 9.7uf cap, or middle position is 0.47uf cap timing. These effect the snappy feel of the decay. Middle position of the switch is best for drum and short percussive sounds.

-Trigger Striking System: The internal trigger conditioning circuit allows from 2.5v to 10v input for successful triggering of the envelope generator. The internal trigger voltage is about 12v. This allows for big drum sounds, and strike effect. There is a 'Thru' jack to pass the input signal to another Asteroid Synth for daisy chaining.

Mixer
--------------------
There is a summing mixer with direct output (pre vca and pre booster), this makes the module act like a normal vco for you to patch to a filter, etc. You also have a mixer input jack so that you can mix another vco or two Asteroid Mini Synths together.

VCA and Analog Delay
-----------------------
The vca can be patched directly into, bypassing the internal summing mixer. This is great for send and return. You would patch from the Asteroid Mini synth's 'Sum' to a filter for example, then patch back into 'Ext VCA' to return the processed sound. The booster knob will boost signals also

patched into the Ext VCA jack.
-The Delay has modulation for: Repeat, Time, and level.
-The VCA is a high quatity cool audio v2164 based vca with its own attenuated 'MODV' cv input.

Final Output
-------------------------
You get a Dry post vca synth level output, and a 'PERC'

output. The difference is the 'Perc' output can have the

delay fx mixed in.
There is a line Level 1/4" output jack.
All outputs can be used simultaneous.

***Some odd ball notes about the module
----------------------------------------
In order to use the Square wave as a sound source you have to patch from the jack above the toggle switch and select the Sqaure wave, and patch that into the Mixer input 'Mix'. One interesting patch is to patch the square wave into a CV input to create a Saw wave. I did this because I wanted to give you the option. If you wanted only the square wave sound source after you did the mix in patch, you can turn off the triangle or sine wave as that has no level knob. You can also use this method to make noise bursts with no vco waves mixed in. The noise generator does not have to be patched like the square wave, it is internally routed to the mixer. Just use the Noise Level knob to adjust the noise level. On the Direct Noise ouput, the level knob does not change anything, it is a direct out."

"The C105 VC Noise / Lo-Fi Machine MKII is a voltage controlled analog sample rate reducer and a VC Nosie generator. This new MKII version expands the modules possibilities with new features that allows this module to be used in other ways not possible with the previous version. Now the C105 MKII can be used like a traditional sample and hold , a voltage controlled clock generator , a random gate / trigger generator or a 12 db VC High pass filter and even as a square wave VCO.

The C105 new characteristics are :

The internal clock has a new LOW mode that allows to use it as a traditional sample and hold.
The module now accepts external clock signals, so it can be synced to other modules.
New clock output. Now the C105 can be used as a master clock.
The passive first order HPF has been replaced for a voltage controlled second order HPF.
The C105 is based on a Sample and Hold with an internal clock that goes from 0,2Hz up to 44KHz and it can be voltage controlled. This wide frequency range and two FM inputs ( one with a reversible attenuator ) allow to create subtle or harsh digital and aliassing effects. The internal noise generator in combination with the S&H make a perfect way to create pitched noises, random voltages, sound FXs etc. In addition, there is also a 12db VC controlled high pass filter with an independent output.

"the bld has all components and functions necessary for generating bass lead and drum sounds with focus on bass drum sounds. it can be trigged by a push button or by an external signal (any shape). the pitch, cutoff frequency, transient times and amplitude are also voltage controllable by external signals. the bld contain main sound generator (oscillator) and noise generator and modifiers such as low pass filter, amplifier and two transient (contour) generators.

oscillator has two manual pitch controllers (fine, coarse) and two inputs for controlling the pitch by external signals (fm1, levelled, bipolar pre-patched to transient generator ar and fm2, calibrated to 1 volt/octave). waveforms and mix between shapes is controlled manually from triangle, mix between triangle and pulse, pulse, mix between pulse and saw tooth and saw tooth). oscillator level is controlled manually from 0 thru nominal signal strength to saturated (curved, for more punch). pulse width is controlled manually and by an external signal (pwm).

low pass filter has two audio inputs marked oscillator level and noise level, the cutoff frequency is controlled manually, transient generators ar and ahr and by cutoff pre-patched to fm2 cv input.

noise generator is connected to the low pass filter and to the amplifier (noise level). the noise generator can be routed in to the amplifier (pre) or directly to the output amp (post). the noise generators level is also controlled by pre-patched ar generator thru input noise level.

ar and ahr transient generators are activated manually by the push button trig and/or by an external signal (input trig). attack, hold and release are manually controlled and by an external signals connected to inputs a1, r1 (ar) and a1, hold and r2 (ahr). amplifiers gain is controlled by mix of ar and ahr and by an external signal connected to the input velocity."

MOTM-101 Noise/Sample and Hold

"MOTM-101 Description

'The MOTM-101 is an essential part of any synthesizer system. It is a dual-function module, where the Noise Generator is linked to the Sample/Hold section without the use of patchcords. Each section can operate independent of the other.

NOISE GENERATOR

The Noise Generator uses 2 Zener diodes to create White Noise. This White noise contains spectral harmonics from near DC to well above hearing. This type of noise is useful for simulating cymbals, ocean waves, static, and other types of "nature" sounds. It is also useful in generating random signals into the Sample & Hold, and for aperiodic, high-speed clocking.

The White Noise is low-pass filtered at approx. 2500Hz to create Pink Noise. Pink Noise is useful for lower frequency sounds such as thunder. The Pink Noise is filtered even more to generate Random Output, which can randomly modulate filters and VCOs.

These three types of noise are found on many synthesizers. However, look closely and you will see the jack labeled VIBRATO, and its associated control pot! This is a MOTM exclusive: a high-Q bandpass filter (the panel control controls the Q) that generates sine waves centered around 7Hz of random amplitudes (and slightly varying frequencies as well). On the panel, a switch selects driving the bandpass filter with either white noise or the internal/external clock from the Sample & Hold section. When the panel switch selects white noise, the vibrato output is a 'wandering' sine wave, perfect for adding realistic vibrato and tremelo. If the switch is in the clock position, each time the clock cycles the output filter rings in a dampened sine wave (the ringing amount set by the panel control). When fed to a VCO, the VCO makes a unique "bbbooooiiinnngggggg" sound.

SAMPLE & HOLD

A Sample & Hold circuit is a sort of voltage memory: each time the clock generator cycles, the signal on the INPUT jack is captured and stored on a special capacitor. This voltage is buffered and fed to the OUTPUT jack. Even with many seconds between samples, the output voltage remains nearly constant (since no circuit is perfect, the output voltage will droop, but at a miniscule rate on the order of 1mv per second). The MOTM-101 contains an internal clock oscillator, whose speed is set by the panel control. A red LED flashes at the clock rate. Plugging another clock source (VCO, LFO, etc) into the EXTERNAL jack over-rides the internal oscillator.

Again, a Sample & Hold is a part of all synthesizers....but wait! Hmmmm...what's that switch marked Track/Hold? Another MOTM exclusive! In the HOLD position, the circuit acts like a "normal" S/H: the output is held steady at the start of each clock cycle. But, in the TRACK position, the output follows (tracks) the input when the clock is low (less than 1.5 volts) and holds the output when the clock is above 1.5 volts. If you are familar with TTL digital logic, this mode is referred to as a 'transparent latch'. From a musical standpoint, this can generate more unique sounds than other S/H modules.

The SLEW control adds portamento or glide to the S&H output. It can be adjusted from zero to 10 seconds.'"

Comments About the Sounds:
its pre analog with a VERY strong filter, 3 oscilators, fuzz and distortion effects. there is no stepping heard in any knob movements either. its sounds like maybe an sh-101/ mc-202 with a little tb-303 mixed in.. its very early 80's monosynth sounding.. not weak like mid-80's polys were. very heavy sounding, with good quality. it's exelent for analog leads and bass's, but dont expect any real pianos or organs or whatever."

By modulating the noise density, the noise generator can create a very wide variety of signals such as bursts, gusts of air or sand, scratching, particles dropping onto a surface – and beyond. When these special signals are used to “excite” the resonator, Tube produces incredibly lively, nature-like tones: from woodwinds, plucked and bowed strings, to much more experimental, randomly evolving ones. Tube also features its own low-frequency oscillator, an envelope generator, and allows its noise signal to be used dry for even more sound design possibilities.

The frequency of VCNO can be modulated via CV – just patch any CV signal into this jack

A bipolar attenuverter lets you find the right level and polarity for your CV signal

A switch on the back lets you select either logarithmic or linear response at the CV input jack


CLOCK Input

Applying a clock signal here bypasses the internal PITCH frequency generator. You can apply a clock from a trigger sequencer to create a pseudorandom drum trigger pattern synced to the rest of your drums"

"Introducing the next lineup of module to get the Pro Panel treatment. It is the tried and true Analog Noise Generator, but the design was so slick I was able to fit a Lock Hart Wave Folder & Gate to Trigger converter. The entire back PCB area is less then 2" (1.5") in depth. It is made with SMT parts.

This is for Euro Format Modular Synth Cases. The user is to install this module themselves using a IDC cable which is included.

THE UNIT COMES WITH A 10 PIN TO 16 PIN IDC CABLE.
POWER SPECS: PLEASE READ THIS AND YOU SHALL NOT BE SORRY! THE MODULE CONFORMS TO THE NEWER DOEPFER POWER LAYOUT SCHEME. ON MY MODULES RED LINE IS (-12V) AND STARTS AT THE TOP.
THE SEQUENCE IS -12V/GND/GND/GND/+12V. SO +12V IS AT THE BOTTOM ON MY MODULES. ALL I DID WAS ROTATE THE DOEPFER STANDARD. THE MODULES COME SHIPPED WITH THE CABLE CONNECTED CORRECTLY. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS CONNECT THE RED STRIP TO YOUR -12V END ON YOUR CASE WHICH IF IT FOLLOWS MOST WILL BE AT THE BOTTOM. THERE IS A SILKSCREEN ON THE MODULE TO SEE THE LAYOUT ON THE HEADER ALSO.

THERE ARE SAFETY PTC RESETTABLE FUSES INSTALL ON THE MODULE THAT WILL OPEN THE CIRCUIT IF CONNECTED WRONG. BUT IT IS GOOD PRACTICE TO JUST READ DIRECTIONS. FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME IF YOU JUST ARE NOT SURE HOW TO CONNECT THE MODULE TO THE EURO CASE FORMAT POWER STRIP.

Circuit 1: NOISE GENERATOR: White Noise, High Pass White Noise, Low Pass White Noise, Red Noise. There is a Trimmer on the PCB that will adjust the Loudness of the core Noise generator. 100% Analog. ALL OUTPUTS.
Circuit 2: Lock Hart Wave Folder: There is (1) Input, (1) Double Pulse Output, (1) Folded Output. In order to control the actual folding, an Attenuator is needed right before the Input Chain in your Patching. Sine or Triangle Waves work best here, but you are free to Experiment.
Circuit 3: Gate to Trigger Converter. This will make a Gate into a short Pulse. Useful for triggering Drum Synths. Again you can also experiment with feeding in slow LFO wave forms and hearing the Audio Result.
