NAMM 2024: Midi Manufacturers Association
video upload by sonicstate
"At NAMM 2024, Pete from Microsoft discussed the progress of MIDI 2.0 integration with the Windows operating system. Microsoft is set to release a new MIDI stack with features such as multi-client support, app-to-app MIDI, virtual MIDI, and scriptable automation. They are also working on incorporating RTP MIDI and Network MIDI 2.0 into the stack. Pete showcased a monitoring tool that comes with the MIDI stack, which allows users to view and record notes, as well as send SysEx and individual messages. Microsoft is collaborating with companies like Bremers Audio and Steinberg to ensure MIDI 2.0 support on Windows. The MIDI 2.0 protocol offers high resolution and expressivity for musicians, with support from manufacturers and positive responses from users. The MIDI Association is actively engaging with companies and building specifications to enhance the musician's experience. Their goal is widespread adoption and the expansion of MIDI 2.0 capabilities in the industry.

NAMM 2025: MIDI Association's Network MIDI 2.0 Unveiled
video upload by sonicstate
"At NAMM 2025, the MIDI Association revealed significant updates regarding the implementation of *Network MIDI 2.0*. We caught up with Pete, who shared insights into how the new protocol has advanced from its predecessor, featuring no cable length restrictions and compatibility over both Wi-Fi and long wired connections.
A standout demonstration involved the Windows implementation of Network MIDI 2.0. Pete illustrated its application using Music Kraken on an iPad, seamlessly controlling a Windows PC running Multitrack Studio via Network MIDI 2.0. The setup, using a BomeBox and KissBox to manage older MIDI 1.0 devices, highlighted the simplicity and efficiency the new standard offers, making it easier for developers to integrate without extensive new requirements.
Noteworthy too, was a discussion about MIDI 2.0's Piano Profile, aiming for consistent performance standards. Pete reassured us that the implementation efforts are gaining pace, promising further integration within Windows soon."

"DrumJam is a whole new world of percussion and drums for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Designed by award winning international percussionist Pete Lockett and Sonosaurus LLC, the developer of ThumbJam, this app is a real first for percussion. It's an exciting and powerful tool, opening up the world of rhythm in a completely hands-on and inspiring way. Whether you are a novice just looking for a bit of rhythmic fun, a songwriter or producer looking for a fresh rhythmic idea, a percussion student writing arrangements for a project, a music teacher looking for rhythm ideas to teach, or a drum circle facilitator seeking to expand their repertoire, this app has something for you.
★★ Launch Sale -- 50% off -- limited time only!! ★★
Pete Lockett has been top of his game for decades and has performed with the stars, from Peter Gabriel and Bjork to Robert Plant, Dido, Jeff Beck and many more. He has also worked extensively in the film industry, arranging and recording all the ethnic percussion for five Bond 007 films. The app is a direct and personal route to his rhythm factory with all the individual percussion parts recorded by Pete. These are not ineffective sequenced patterns but actual recorded audio waiting to groove with rhythm at multiple tempos through your very own mobile device.

There are also incredible filter, pitch bend, delay, reverb, lofi, and distortion effects available for the solo instruments, which really adds a whole new dimension of live performance possibilities. With multiple save and export options, it is possible to record loops or a whole performance to later import into your DAW or other audio app as 44.1kHz 16-bit WAV files. This is great for studio use and can form the basis of a new song idea very easily.
DrumJam supports export via iTunes file sharing, open directly in another app, email, AudioCopy, and export to SoundCloud. There is support for background audio, and a comprehensive MIDI implementation that supports clock sync in and out to lock in with whatever you have via CoreMidi to/from hardware devices, network MIDI, or other apps using virtual MIDI ports. You can even play the solo kits externally triggered via MIDI input, and output your live pad performance via MIDI output!
Whatever you do in music, we are certain there is a use for DrumJam in your world. Give it a try and join forces with an ancient percussive energy."

Noatikl (or noatikl)

It uses techniques developed over the last 17 years through our work on the award-winning Koan generative music system, techniques now used in the all-new and superior 'Noatikl'... Many years ago, Brian Eno popularised the term "generative music" to describe music that is ever-different and changing, and that is created by a system."
Some notes via via brian c who sent this one in:
"Noatikl is a generative music tool , i.e. it generates a MIDI stream over several channels from a rule based set up. The rules can be very complex providing harmonic and scale structure , CC controllers, envelopes, pitch and tempo variations etc. The rules run up against a randomizer as well so this thing will never play the same thing twice, but is always musically coherent and usually interesting. For creating long ambient pieces it is ideal. I run the standalone version on an older laptop and send the MIDI out to my Ableton Live DAW and then redirect the notes received to whatever hardware or soft synth I choose to use. What the program does for me is remove the worry and focus over the playing a keyboard and allow me to focus on tweeking the synths on top of the music for the sound quality - sort of a virtual Eno-buddy to play with. I am such a shitty keyboard player, this really is liberating, of course you can also assign that control to the program too, but I like to knob twiddle. Prior to this I would use some MIDI sequence and then use Live's random tool, but there was never any guaranteee that the random parts would fit with each other. Noatikl assures that you have compatible notes. It's also way easier than MAX which is for really nerdy types. Of course you can also make it very atonal and dissonant if you send it those rules too. It is Mac and Windows flavored and there are standalone versions as well as plug-in versions. The only limitations that are irksome is that receives but does not send MIDI clock, so you have to synch it from inside LIVE if you want to run both. It also does not work well with Live as a plug in because Live does not support multiple MIDI -outs from a single VSTi, you have to route it out and back to MID-Yoke as a work around if you want the plug in version, I just use it standalone on an old laptop. Because it just sends MIDI it is not a CPU hog. And finally it's not a synth per se, but it allows you to set up a mix of 16 soft and outboard synths in Liveall at once and let them all work together on a piece ...awesome soundwall to say the least and the best part is it doesn't sound like a TB303 ACID cliche"

MidiSizer MidiGAL w/ MidiPAL v1.4 firmware
via this auction

"MidiSizer MidiGAL, hand built with love by Pete Kvitek and running MidiPAL v1.4 firmware.
It includes 19 different MIDI 'apps', ranging from MIDI debugging or routing utilities to compositional tools like arpeggiators, scale, midi delay, and pattern generators.
Although this MidiGAL is running Mutable Instruments firmware, there is a number of other firmware variants that were developed specifically for MidiGAL.
I think you can flash your own firmware if you know what you're doing.
Product page for MidiGAL is here - midisizer.com/midigal/
MidiPAL firmware info: mutable-instruments.net/midipal
The unit is in a clear acrylic case and ships with the power supply pictured in the listing."
Last pic below is minus the case via the midisizer website which has the following details on the MidiGAL:
"Although MidiGAL can run Mutable Instruments MIDIpal firmware, there is a number of other firmware variants that were developed specifically for MidiGAL:
MidiClk — MIDI clock tester/generator
MidiArp — advanced MIDI arpeggiator
MidiSeq — polyphonic MIDI step sequencer
MidiGAL differences from MIDIpal
While MidiGAL hardware is almost identical to the original MIDIpal, there are some minor differences:
8×2 LCD (MIDIpal uses 8×1)
tactile switch (MIDIpal has no switch)
external EEPROM (MIDIpal has no external EEPROM)
4 x I/O ports (MIDIpal has 8 of them)"

NINA synth: dreams come true (review & jam)
video upload by Pete Midi
"Melbourne instruments NINA shows how synthesizers should be built to provide the best of both worlds: the look and feel of a real instrument and the total recall comfort of a software plugin. Thereby NINA defines total recall in the most consequent sense with an approach that makes up a milestone in synthesizer history. The only disadvantage: once you have played with NINA any other synth feels incomplete.

Stereo synth for 40 bucks: a wired heart for scary drones
video upload by Pete Midi
"Be warned: the Wired Heart is not for everyone. It’s not a musical instrument that lets you play Xmas songs. It’s rather a special kind of drone synth that you may use for the score of your next horror movie or just as a rich stereo source for your next sampling session. But if you think this could also be a visually appealing gift, be careful and watch this video first! Otherwise, one day you might say or sing “Last Christmas I gave you my heart, but the very next day you gave it away …”

Rare Vangelis Zyklus MPS (Midi Performance System) with OLED Display Upgrade
via Syn-Fi
"Zyklus MPS (Midi Performance System) with OLED display upgrade (modification). There are only 40 of these in existence and I found this one on eBay, with a dim display but otherwise is very good condition. Back in 1988 this retailed for £1995 and wasn’t well understood and did not therefore enter a big production run. Its basically a ‘midi’ scratchpad in the studio and performance tool for live use. It’s famous because Vangelis hired the inventors of Zyklus, Bill Marshall and and Pete Kellock to develop a system exclusively for him - “Direct” which gave rise to the album 'Direct'.

ems vcs3 with MIDI
via this auction
"this is a mk ii vsc3 but with silver top knobs that is because its probably an early mkii. it works fine but it could use a cleaning because some pots are scratchy, but this is normal for an old synth. it has a midi kit installed which is nicely done and a modification on the osc for modulation. it came with original cover and the black joystic top is extra. it has an original mkii joystic which is the same as aks joystic and i put this plastic top which makes the joystick easier to use. but you can take it of or leave it it just fits. its not stuck on the joystick. when i bought this vcs3 i was told it was pete namlooks but i dont have any proof . thats for the new owner to find out."
