"In this video, we explore a fascinating piece of Italian musical heritage: a rare hardware clone of the Alpha Syntauri, likely part of the Jen Musipack project.
This specific setup features the (probably) cloned Mountain Computer cards. It’s a rare look at how this technology was adapted and distributed in Italy during the early 80s.
The Hardware Challenge:
I actually own the original Musipack keyboard, but due to its age, several keys are currently non-functional. To make this demonstration possible and play the system properly, I’ve paired the Italian hardware with an original Alpha Syntauri keyboard unit. It’s a perfect example of 80s cross-compatibility!
Same issue with the original Musipack Software which is no working correctly with the keyboard.
The Creative Process:
Sound Engine: Original Alphaplus software (Additive Synthesis).
Hardware: Music System digital oscillator cards (Jen Musipack clone of the original Mountain Computer).
Control: Original Alpha Syntauri Keyboard.
Recording & Sequencing: All sounds were captured and sequenced using the 1010music Blackbox (Bento).
The result is a unique blend of 8-bit grit and modern sequencing. The Alphaplus software allows for deep manipulation of harmonics, creating textures that range from cold, clinical digital tones to surprisingly lush, haunting pads."
Alphaplus made its first and only prior appearance on the site back in 2011 in a post fearturing Audio Damage's Phosphor.
According to Google AI: "AlphaPlus was a pioneering software package for the Apple II-based alphaSyntauri synthesizer system, enabling additive synthesis in the early 1980s. It allowed for polyphonic sound creation by stacking sine waves (harmonics), featuring 10 instruments, and providing deep manipulation of partials to produce distinct,, digital, or, lush, textures, as discussed on MATRIXSYNTH."

"This is the first part in a series of videos featuring the UK modular stalwarts Analogue Systems originally published in 2015. It was filmed during a visit of Andreas Schneider to Cornwall, where Analogue System's Bob Williams and Steve Gay reside and have built AS modules since the 1990s. After recently stumbling upon these videos again, we talked to Andreas and thought it would be nice to republish them and make them available on YouTube for the first time ever.
While Bob has since retired, Steve continues to craft modules with the same exceptional audio quality in South Cornwall. The video goes into the direct historical connection between Analogue Systems and EMS (of Synthi fame). Steve - who once worked for EMS and received exclusive license from EMS' Robin Wood to reproduce some of the VCS3 circuits - explains how this heritage has shaped the character of Analogue Systems and resulted in modules like the RS-510e Trapezoid Generator."
"Distortion has been an essential tool for my music making for most of my life, whether that was playing guitar, working with synths in amps, re amping synths and production stems through pedal FX or smashing mixers, tape machines and other gear I've always found it fascinating and with the options to CV control distortion in modular it's even better!
Head Banger from Setonix Synth & Robots Are Red takes the Swedish Death Metal sound of the Boss Heavy Metal pedal, heavily re vamps it for a wide range of input sources, adds CV control and a creative feedback path and presents itself in Eurorack form. While the name and styling lean on the metal heritage it's been interesting to find a subtler warmth and crunch, synths in tube amp like tones and blown out noisy cassette style grunge for more ambient music.

"Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. More or less all synth nerds have their own temporal demarcation line between 'awesome old school Roland' and 'corporate grave robbers squeezing the last penny from iconic IPs'.
For me, this turning point might as well be the release of the 1999 JV-1010. This obvious insult to UI design combined classic ROMpler tones of the 90s with a workflow so abysmal it helped pave the way for the DAW revolution - and things only went downhill from there.

"The Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave 8M is here – the compact desktop module with huge power. From classic PPG tones to modern wavetable magic, this demo shows why it could be your next dream synth.
In this video I put it through its paces with a full demo and review, showing how it stacks up against the bigger 3rd Wave keyboard and even the Behringer Wave – a clone of the classic PPG 2.2.
With 24 voices, wavetable creation, sample import, and a deep sequencer, the 8M delivers the lush PPG tones we know and love – but it also goes far beyond, opening up new creative possibilities for sound design and performance.
If you’ve seen my earlier videos on the 3rd Wave , you’ll know how close they get to that classic PPG sound. But the 8M adds serious flexibility: multi-timbrality, modern workflow, and the ability to create wavetables from audio. This isn’t just a clone – it’s a synth that pushes forward while staying true to the heritage.
Whether you’re a fan of vintage digital synths, wavetable synthesis, or just looking for an inspiring new instrument for your studio, the 8M is a fascinating option.

You might remember the Donner L1 from this post. New NAMM video above followed by pics and additional details below. Note the keyboard is actually separate from the control section; you can have either the full keyboard or desktop.
"At the latest NAMM show, we caught up with Gabriel from *Donner*, who introduced us to the *L1 Synthesizer*, a new unit that merges homage to classic designs with modern flair. While it shares a visual nod to the legendary SH-101, Donner was keen on establishing its unique identity. The L1 includes additional sound sources, most notably a warm triangle wave. The sub-oscillator offers three variations: a pulse wave an octave down, one two octaves down, and a variable pulse wave.
A standout feature was the external input capability, allowing you to process a guitar, other synths, or even vocals through the synth's filters and envelopes. An intriguing LFO design pushes into the audio rate, enabling FM modulation. The L1's onboard sequencer supports 64 steps per slot and allows you to store sequence presets--a handy addition for live settings. The L1 should be available Autumn 2025."
Inspired by the legendary mono analog synth from the golden era. Faithful recreation in sound wise and packed with modern features to make it fit in nowadays music production and performance scenes.

Heritage Audio announces availability of SYNTH BUDDY as world’s first desktop 10 to 1 reversible and fully passive stereo switch
MADRID, SPAIN: European pro audio manufacturer Heritage Audio is proud to announce availability of SYNTH BUDDY — billed as being the world’s first desktop 10 to 1 reversible and fully passive stereo switch as a cost-effective, essential studio solution for seamlessly connecting up to 10 stereo (or 20 mono) line level sources, such as synths, drum machines, or samplers, and toggling between them with the twist of a knob — as of January 15, 2025…
It is fair to say that anyone who has ever dreamed about an inexpensive solution to help have multiple synths, drum machines, samplers, and other line level instruments connected and available with the twist of a knob can wake up and smell the coffee, courtesy of Heritage Audio’s SYNTH BUDDY. Indeed, its top panel-positioned 10 x1 STEREO PASSIVE SELECTOR wording gives the game away as it is possible to seamlessly connect 10 stereo (or 20 mono) line level sources to its 10 stereo/20 mono TS jack inputs and toggle between them with the twist of a knob (outputting via one stereo/two mono TS jacks) — simple as that! Talk about a dream becoming reality. And an all-passive design ensures crystal-clear line level signals with no added colouration — straight from the user’s musical mind to the song with no power source needed.
Needless to say, when creativity hits, there is no time for plugging in cables and switching gear. After all, many have experienced the creativity-killing scenario of having a great musical idea seemingly arrive out of nowhere, only for it to disappear by the time everything is set up and ready to record; no such worries when working with SYNTH BUDDY, of course, since everything is connected and available at the twist of a knob.
It is even possible to use SYNTH BUDDY ‘backwards’ by turning it into a one-input/10-output selector, so users can, for example, easily run one guitar or bass into several amps or effects — applications are (almost) endless! Either way, SYNTH BUDDY is built like a tank with an elegant desktop design — measuring merely 190mm (W) x 105mm (D) x 80mm (H) while weighing in at only 988g — that lends itself to studio or stage usage... and all without breaking the bank!
SYNTH BUDDY is shipping and available via Heritage Audio’s growing global network of dealers (https://heritageaudio.com/where-to-buy-international/) with an SSP (Standalone Selling Price) of €199.00 EUR (including VAT) in the EU and a MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) of $199.00 USD, US distribution being handled via RAD Distribution (https://raddist.com/en/brands/heritage-audio).
"I teamed up with Belgian Eurorack module manufacturer Joranalogue to solve one of the biggest problem I had with my wall of test equipment: I could use it in the studio, but not play it live. It is just too heavy and fragile, being about 50 years. So that part of my music remained unperformed. With our new module Collide 4 I and everyone else can now take the wonderful textures and sonic possibilities of nuclear research equipment on the road.
It is based on a lock-in amplifier, a tool made to sniff out tiny fluctuations of a frequency in vast amount of noise. But Joran took the concept further and added a frequency shifter. It is module with vast possibilities, and I can only give you a small overview and intro in this video. Check out Collide 4 at your trusted modular dealer in person now."

The origins of electronic music are found within the early works of a small group of forward-thinking mid-century composers, harnessing electronic test gear to create strange new sounds. Building upon this heritage, today everything comes full circle again through Collide 4.
The first hardware release to be co-developed by acclaimed musician and YouTube sensation Hainbach, Collide 4 builds upon the lock-in amplifier concept, and brings it into the Eurorack world. These atomic age physics research instruments are known for their raw power when used in musical applications. Now, any synthesist can experience this for themselves, at a fraction of the size and weight of a vintage unit, and with full voltage control.
The result is a wholly new kind of analogue synth voice and audio processor, with capabilities far beyond what the avant-garde pioneers could have imagined. Collide 4 is an expression of Hainbach's extensive experience in exploring the deepest musical realms contained within vintage test equipment, and the Joranalogue philosophy of electronic instrument design.
Honouring its innovative dual-phase architecture, this new kind of musical generator and processor has been christened the ‘quadrature spectral computer’. The sound? Quite simply: it's smashing!
Modern, fully analogue Eurorack format re-imagining of the lock-in amplifier concept, expanded to new heights. Pingable variable bandwidth filter with self-oscillation capability. Pre- and post-filter gain stages, for a total of up to 130 dB of amplification! Through-zero sine/cosine quadrature oscillator. Hilbert transform network for frequency shifter use. Dual ring modulators with output lowpass filters. Extensive output section, including magnitude and phase analogue computing outputs. Unique X/Y quadrature topology, ideal for stereo use. Handsome (and useful) signal level/overload LED indicator. CV control over everything, with temperature compensation and excellent volt/octave pitch tracking. 20 HP, 30 mm deep. Over 600 components, yet a fraction of the weight and size of a vintage Model 124A lock-in amplifier unit. Impedance-compensated outputs with dual-colour LEDs. Trim potentiometers accessible from the front panel. Precision-milled 2 mm anodised aluminium front panel with high-resolution, non-erasable graphics. Bullet-proof design: polarised power header and MOSFET protection circuit. Includes 16-to-10-pin Eurorack power ribbon cable. Premium mounting hardware: black screws, black nylon washers and matching hex key. Supplied with fold-out signal flow and front panel diagram. High-quality components and assembly; designed and made in Belgium.

PROJECT ANTIDOTE (codename THE MACHINE) is the latest of such world-changing endeavors. But rather than another top-down government control-scheme funded by covert appropriation, the Military, Moonies, the Heritage Foundation or Rand Corp— PROJECT ANTIDOTE is conducted by a grassroots coalition of outsiders far from the eyes & ears of the surveillance-state.
Miles down a random dirt road a working group was assembled from the ranks of OFF!—the Hardcore Punk Supergroup—& Trogotronic’s Subhuman Resistor-Wranglers. Their mission: Design the ANTI-SYSTEM.
While silicon valley oligarchs were squandering unimaginable sums to develop “brain-enhancement implants” at zillion-dollar vivisection labs, PROJECT ANTIDOTE relentlessly refined THE MACHINE at a secret forest shanty dubbed “THE PUNK WORKS”. Success was soon realized when the pathway for organic audio-to-mental frequency-coupling was established, whereby minds are FREED rather than controlled. "The Heritage Modular synthesizer has been designed to mimic the typical look and feel of an early 1970s modular synthesizer but with full polyphonic capabilities. The feasibility is tightly linked to the usage of digital technologies available in 2020 to DIY enthusiasts.
From a musician perspective, the system should provide the illusion of using a classical analog modular synthesizer with knobs, switches and patch cables.
The core of the synthesizer is based on Pure Data: a powerful sound engine for the generation and processing of audio signal. The underlying algorithms has been chosen for faithful emulation of analog circuitry characteristics. As the goal is to provide with hardware user experience, the Pure Data GUI is only used during the software development phase.
A dedicated set of hardware modules has been designed to act as controllers for Pure Data.
