"The Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave just picked up two firmware updates (2.0 and 2.0C) while I was off hiking amongst the Sequoias — so let's install them and dig into what's new.

The headline is the new shimmer reverb, and it is gorgeous. It blooms, it tracks the note you're playing, and the Pitch Amount parameter lets you set the interval it shimmers up in — set it to 12 for octaves, 4 for thirds, whatever fits the key. It's also a Mod Matrix destination, so you can ride it with aftertouch. I'll show you exactly that.

We also look at the rebuilt Make Waves wavetable creation with its new Spectral mode — sampling sounds from a Leviathan and turning them into wavetables, then comparing Spectral against the classic Pitch-On method side by side. The results genuinely surprised me.

In short, AE Machine (estimated release date of October 2) consists of:

"Eleven synthesis voices built from scratch at sample level, five samplers, two free-running pads. A sequencer where a 16 × 16 Markov matrix decides which step may follow which, a note sieve that re-orchestrates the pattern when you transpose it, a chaotic modulation matrix reaching 271 parameters, morphing between any two presets, and a stem recorder that writes twenty-six files in one press. It runs in Max/MSP 9 on macOS and Windows, and playing it requires no paid Max license: an unlicensed copy of Max opens and runs the machine in full.

This is not commercial software in the ordinary sense. It is my working method, the environment I built night after night for my own music, packaged so that you can play it. When you get it, you are getting research: the reading, the listening, the failed versions, the decisions. The manual is a hundred pages and it is already here, whole, free to read. Trust your ears over any paragraph in it."

Bob Moog 2003 NAMM Interview – Hosted by Frank Serafine

matrix note: note what Bob Moog says after 5:18. Many of you might know that Herb Deutsch suggested the keyboard as the main interface for the Moog synthesizer, while Morton Subotnic had an influence on Don Buchla in the development of the synthesizer as a repacement for working with tape for new sound creation and manipulation. Don Buchla did not want to limit the interface to a 12 note keyboard. Buchla has become synonymous with atonal music, and not viewing the purpose of a synthesizer as an instrument meant to synthesize known instruments, but rather as a sonic easel, hence the Buchla Music Easel. Moog in general is credited with the direction of keyboard based synthesis. It's fascinating hearing Bob Moog essentially say otherwise. This interview is from 2003, before internet discussions between East and West coast synthesis took off.

MATRIXSYNTH Turns 21

Yes, MATRIXSYNTH is now old enough to legally have a drink in the US!

Joking aside, MATRIXSYNTH in its current form started on July 20, 2005 with this post. Since then there has been only a single day without a post, which occured back on that dreadful day of August 6, 2005. I can't link to it because there isn't a post to link to. :) Sorry for the bad humor. That said, since then, I haven't missed a single day posting on the site including holidays, vacations, and two bouts of eye surgery due to a retinal tear and detachement in 2025. It was painless, but scary, and now all is good.

For those of you not in the know, MATRIXSYNTH is a one-man operation, run by your host, me, matrix. Every single post has gone up by hand - there is no automation and definitely no AI. Including this post, there have been at least 260,897 posts to date. There have actually been been more but some have been taken down due to either videos or audio dissapearing over the years, which brings me to a point: please don't remove your videos and audio demos off the web. You might think they are no longer relevant or you might even be embarrased by them as you think things have progressed and they no longer meet your standards, but they are relevant. They are part of history and will always be worth a look-back in context. Who you are today isn't defined by what you put up years ago. Trust me, I am often embarrased when I look back at some of my older posts. I'll likely be embarrased by this one. That said, please keep your old content up! It's a bit of synth history, and it's a look back at what you felt worth sharing back when you posted it. It doesn't define you today. It's like throwing away old family photographs because you are now older. That and there is always something interesting to find in older videos. A timbre from a given synth, an experience relevant in time.

That brings me to something I wanted to clarify for those that may be wondering: in general I prefer to keep myself out of posts for fear of influencing or even ruining the experience for others. I feel it is my job to present content w/o bias, and I prefer to post things as they are presented by the person or entity that created the content to begin with. Not influencing how others might or might not experience what goes up is a conscious decision. I realized over time it's akin to talking through music.

What I love about running MATRIXSYNTH is getting to share what's new to me on a daily basis. I have a policy of only posting specific content once. That means out of 260,897+ posts to date, nearly every single one is unique. It's also great to realize that there have been multiple things to actually feature every single day of the year, shared on the day itself, over the past 21 years!!! That's saying something, not about me or the site, but about the community.

The original MATRIXSYNTH actually started back in 1997. Click to see the monstrocity. That site will be 29 this year! The site was my personal portal into the world of synths. On the left were a list of sites I visited back then that would open in the right window frame when clicked on. Unfortunately that functionality is no longer supported in modern browsers; however you can right-click any link and open it in a new window. It's worth a look back at what synth sites were around back in 1997 - 2005 or so. Remember, YouTube didn't come out until December of 2005. MATRIXSYNTH in its current format, the blog, came out before YouTube. Think about that for a bit. This site has tracked the personal world of synthesis since before YouTube came out! Also, you might notice the old site came out well before The Matrix movies. The alias matrix, and hence MATRIXSYNTH, comes from my first synthesizer, the Oberheim MATRIX-6, which I purchased new in 1986 and still own to this day.

OK, this post is long enough. I want to end it by thanking the supporters of the site, the banner sponsors of the site, and most importantly, you, my readers. This might surprise some people, but I sometimes feel irrelevant, like why am I even doing this? I then remind myself I do it for the sake of doing it. I want to capture a bit of what's out there on a daily basis. I want the site to be a log (a weblog - blog) of synth history. I started back in 2005, and ever since that day I've had something to post, except for that solemn day on August 6, 2005. (P.S. I went on vacation that day and didn't think there would be internet access, let alone that I would be posting every single day after that - imagine not being able to say "I never missed a single day!" for the rest of your life because of one single day! "If it wasn't for that day!..") I think I will be doing this until the day I'm no longer here, and although I know I would be doing this regardless of whether I had an audience or not, knowing I do have an audience makes a world of difference. And thank you to all of you out there sharing your synth content. You are creating SYNTH HISTORY!!!

"Hi everyone, These are midiphy eurorack modules.

Disclaimer I have marked this video as Paid Promotion although I was not paid to make this or any video, I was sent these to test before release.

The zetaSID modules are based on the legendary Midibox Sid Synthesizer.
They contain the lead and drum engines from the Midibox Sid and use Hermits (creator of Sid Wizard tracker) Sid emulation.

Each zetaSID contains 3 voices and filter as you would expect from an Sid chip ( The Sid chip is the sound chip from the legendary Commodore 64 home computer from the 80's )

So each zetaSID is a like one commodore 64. If you have multiple zetaSID's they can be linked together with supplied ribbon cables internally to add them to the Phybus, midiphy's way of having all modules being able to talk to each other. They then can work in unison, as stereo pairs, monophonically or for polyphony so a lot of different ways to use them. Of course I wanted to test how I could use them multitimbrally, and in this example I have them unlinked (not physically you can do it from the menus)

The midi module is Nexus Midi by midiphy and allows you to control the zetaSID's via regular midi over the Phybus (they do support cv gate also)

zetaSID 1 is using the drum engine, here I have split, kick, snare and hats over different voices on a single zetaSID, so indeed you can play a kick, hat and snare at the time time if patched this way.

zetaSID 2 is the lead sound, it is going through some hall reverb in this example. It shows off legato bends and using the impressive wave sequencer to increase vibrato over time (like tables if you are familiar with trackers)

zetaSID 3 Uses the Arp to provide classic c64 Arp sounds, I am just sending chords to this module over midi and it is handling the arps itself. It actually has 3 arpeggiators, one per voice, so a stereo pair of zetasids can run SIX arps with completely different settings at the same time from a single patch, impressive.

zetaSID 4 Is using one of the factory presets Den of Saws, I've just high passed it a bit since we are using a lot harmonically rich voices in this song.

This was midi sequenced via a Dirtywave M8 Tracker.

I will show more of the zetaSID's, as they are very powerful and very deep, the amount of modulation they have is outstanding even has Logic Gates, you can literally XOR lfo's together and I need to say if you are seeing this video and thinking you want like to write songs on these that program change isn't currently implemented, but is a high priority on the roadmap.

1. ODD-1 Overview: Playheads

For a long time now we have tried to live by the words of the great Michael Bolton from the movie Office Space, "why should I change when he's the one who sucks?" But language evolves, and unfortunately, the word “grok” has taken on associations that are problematic. Oddment has evolved too. Starting from one quirky product idea, in 3 years we have grown and are now ready for manufacturing and fulfillment of this product, with ambition to make it the first among many. So with much consternation, we have decided to drop the name groc. When we thought about a new name, we thought that what we have is a little unusual, perhaps a little outside the norm...you might even call it, the ODD-1. This is the first in a series of videos to show all of the ODD-1's functions in more detail. In this one we show off half of the encoders that control the granular synthesis engine - the PLAYHEADS function. Here you can control the level, starting point, tuning (aka pitch adjustment) and playback speed for up to 4 different granular playheads. The auxiliary functions available on the touch screen introduce random variability in different ways.

2. ODD-1 Overview: Grains

This is the second in a series of videos to show all of the ODD-1's functions in more detail. In this one we show off the second half of encoders that control the granular synthesis engine - the GRAINS function. Here you can control the size, spacing, left-right placement, and grain window shape. Each control also has a related function, introducing grain size variability, spacing jitter, binaural scatter, and a front-back bias for the window shape. The auxiliary functions available on the touch screen control a bandpass filter that can be randomized per grain and adjust whether grain size is regulated in the source sample or in the output signal, which can have a big impact on sound characteristics.

3. ODD-1 Overview: 03 Envelopes & Time Path

This is the third in a series of videos to show all of the ODD-1's functions in more detail. In this one we show off the ENVELOPES function. Here you can control the note amplitude envelope and timing, access 3 envelopes that can be used as modulation sources, and use our unique TIME PATH feature to dynamically adapt the playback speed.

4. ODD-1 Overview 04: Sample

This is the fourth in a series of videos to show all of the ODD-1's functions in more detail. In this one we show off the SAMPLE function. Here you can choose a sample from the factory library or user-uploaded samples, control the playback mode and the section available for granulation, play and hold notes, set loop points and interact with pitch, tempo and channel information of the sample. We also show the auto pitch and tempo alignment features.

5. ODD-1 Overview 05: LFOs, Macros, Patching

This is the fifth in a series of videos to show all of the ODD-1's functions in more detail. In this one we show off the LFOs, Macros and how to create modulation connections. There are 4 LFOs, 3 Envelopes, 4 Macros (assignable knobs), 4 Control inputs and MIDI information that can all act as modulation sources. Any parameter on the device is a parameter destination. Unlimited connections are made by holding down a destination parameter and then pressing or twisting a modulation source.

6. ODD-1 Overview 06: Filters, Saturation, Echoes

This is the sixth in a series of videos to show all of the ODD-1's functions in more detail. In this one we show off the Filters, Saturation and Echoes modules. Two filters and two saturation modules per voice, both with multiple types of processing and modulatable parameters, allow for transformation beyond the granular engine. Two echoes sections with filtering and distortion in the feedback loop and fully modulatable parameters make ODD1 worthwhile just as a modular effects rack!

7. ODD-1 Overview: 07 Layers

This is the seventh in a series of videos to show all of the ODD-1's functions in more detail. In this one we show the dual Layer functionality. Essentially the entire system is duplicated so the ODD-1 is like having a dual modular systems, each with a polyphonic granular engine feeding two filters and two non-linear processors per voice, with 3 envelopes, 1 time path, 4 LFOs, 4 Macros and a independent modulation matrix per layer. In these examples we also remind that granular can easily do subtractive-style synthesis when using a basic waveform as the source sample.

8. ODD-1 Overview 08: Reverb & System

The final video in our eight-part series on the ODD-1's functions focuses on the upper-left row where we have global volume, system-level reverb and can work with banks of patches.

The reverb is a classic matrix-style parametric reverb. Think of it like a whole set of interacting delay units with slowly modulating delay times. Ok now that you have that in mind, that's it, that's what it is. It sounds sweet.

If two layers of modulating, granular goodness with a fantastic reverb on top wasn't enough, how do banks of patches to store every twist and connection sound?

We debugged and fixed several problems with the circuit board including the power-up, line input and output, and noise on the control signal inputs.

We got several bids from contract manufacturers in the U.S. and around the world and selected Soldered, based in the E.U. They came highly recommended, and we think their experience will be a huge asset as we go into production.

We worked with Martyna Alexander to tweak the graphic design of the front and back panel. We are thrilled with the updates, including our new company and product logos.

We have first iterations of our custom firmware, enabling full functionality of the device and full USB connectivity to a host computer.

We have completed first versions of the software that include all audio, MIDI and system functionality we intend to support for the release. After many months of playing and testing we re-organized a few functions to expand both the number of concurrent grain “playheads”, and to support banks of patches intended for convenient switching and management in live performance.

An incredible collection of more than 450 artifacts from the life and career of Florian Schneider, co-founder of the pioneer electronic band Kraftwerk."

Update: the post has been fully updated with all the synth related gear. This may just well be the longest post to be featured on the site. I wanted to capture all the pics for all of the details including notes, scuffs, and of course serial numbers. It's an interesting look into what he used, the condition he keped his gear, in some cases, how he actually used his gear. Note the phonetics on the keys of the Casio CZ-101 and DX-100. Note the Midi Switch Box with a built-in speaker? What's that about? Note the camouflage key strap on the Korg RK-100 Remote Keyboard. Did he pick it out himself or did the keytar just come with it? Note the repeat midi controllers and the MIDI saxaphones. Wind was his primary instrument. You'll find a ton of the acoustic gear he used in the other listings. This is a fascinating insight into both what and how he used his gear.

Rack Mount Sennheiser VSM-201 Vocoder

A late 1970s Sennheiser VSM 201 Vocoder with no serial number from the personal studio and collection of Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk (see images). While it’s said that only a few dozen of these Vocoders were produced, a few examples made it into the hands of forward-thinking musical artists including Herbie Hancock, Daft Punk, and of course, Kraftwerk, who used a VSM-201 like this on their albums Man Machine (1978) and Computerworld (1981). The VSM-201 has an intelligible sound that has not yet been bested by modern gear. Includes power cable. This VSM-201 has been removed from its wooden enclosure (which bears the serial number plate) and modified with a metal rack mount casing, presumably for live use. Requires 240v, IEC power cable not included.

"A towering icon of analog synthesis! Nicely restored, beautifully preserved, and built to tour or record for another lifetime.

This Oberheim Matrix-12 is in very good condition, has been restored by Rosensound, with some recent restorations performed by synth legend and former Oberheim engineer Marcus Ryle. It comes in a new, custom-built, heavy-duty flight case. It’s a US version, upgraded with a new control panel overlay from Sweet Discrete (UK) for a clean, sharp aesthetic. Everything functions beautifully; a truly top-shelf example of one of the most powerful analog polysynths ever built.

Cosmetic notes: the Sweet Discrete panel overlay LED registration is a bit off in a few places, so some LEDs look slightly off center (as shown in an included close-up image). Performance is not affected. The new overlay generally looks beautiful, but not strictly 10/10. There is also some stubborn tape residue on a few of the keys which can also be seen in the photos.

Crazy side note: when I (matrix) was in the 9th grade, I actually visted Anthony Marinelli's studio in the 80s on a mini field trip with a few studens in my Geometry class. Anthony sampled our voices and played them back on his Synclavier. Not long after, I bought my first synth, an Oberheim Matrix-6 in 1986. The matrix alias comes from the Matrix-6.
