Dark & Long (Dark Train)/Underworld - Circuit Tracks Version.

"Best known for being featured in the movie Danny Boyle movie ‘Trainspotting’ this track was first released in 1994 by the band, Underworld. It featured also in the 2012 opening ceremony of the London Olympics (which was also directed by Danny Boyle). Prior to this my wife was only slightly aware of the band, but this song (and others featured) made her an instant fan! The album it is featured on (‘Isles Of Wonder’) is her favourite and is played in our house, in her car, on her phone whenever and wherever she has a chance so this is dedicated to her. Love xx

I was inspired to do this version after PinkPantheress’s new track inspired by this song. I’ve done a version of her track too and you can find it here; [Illegal/PinkPantheress video below]

Everything you hear is programmed into, played and produced by the Circuit Tracks. No extra synths or effects were used and the audio is a straight recording from the stereo out. There are a couple of samples being played (see below) to fill out the track and some very dodgy singing of the repeated refrain ‘Dark Train’ by yours truly.

This was fun to do and having polished this a bit more I would like to go back and redo the PinkPantheress track….if anyone would like to see an Underworld/Pink Pantheress mashup remix (‘Illegal’ in the style of ‘Dark Train’) leave a comment below and I’ll happily oblige ;)
The sounds on this were self-created exclusively for this track. The drum samples used were my go-to 909 and 707 samples from Yves Big City’s ‘90’s House Dream’ pack. I addition I created a looped chord for the choir sound (I used Arturia’s Emulator softsynth) and I merged this chord with edited filtered sections of my voice to produce the repeated ‘Dark Train’ section.
The track layout was as follows,
Tempo 136 BPM
Synth 1 – Bass Organ patch
Synth 2 – Main synth stab/pad sound (I used a wavetable wave, ‘Tri-Saw Blend’, detuned it and added tons of reverb)
Drum 1 – 909 bass drum and rim sounds (no reverb)
Drum 2 – 909 & 707 Hihat (closed and open and some ride)
Drum 3 – 909 Claps
Drum 4 – Arturia Emulator softsynth Choir chord loop (4 bars) and merged choir/”Dark Train’ vocals all loaded onto drum pads and played as if drum sequences.

"Playing around with the small case, today. Just wanted to showcase what could be done with an Arp of Darkness and a Seventh Summoner, side by side. Patch notes:

Pam’s Pro clocking everything. Seventh Summoner sequencing and real-time transposing a Braids (pluck program) running through Data Bender, and a MultiVersio on the LoFi program. A couple of Disting MK4’s are running the bass drone on one with an LFO on the other that is modulating a Pittsburgh Modular filter. That’s being sequenced by an Ornament & Crime running the Phaserville Suite. The Arp Of Darkness is arpeggiator a Dust Of Time (swarm program) and that’s running through a Busy Circuits MFX on the 2051 Bit Corrupter program and a stereo delay on another Disting MK4. Finally, there’s an Erica Synths Pico drum running some rhythmic duties and an EP-133 with the main drums off to the side."

1969 Moog IIIP Vintage Modular Synthesizer For Sale or NYC Studio Use

"The Moog modular was one of the first commercially available synthesizers. Sold in different configurations, the Moog IIIP consisted of 3 portable cabinets. Containing ten (!) 901 series oscillators, the best lowpass and highpass filters in the biz, and a magical spring reverb that makes things sound more organic, we can't think of any other synth that matches the warmth and fatness of this genuine 1969 vintage Moog modular. Wendy Carlos’s classic album Switched on Bach and I Feel Love by Donna Summer were recorded on similar Moog modular systems. We just finished refurbishing this gorgeous example (assuming we don’t find any problems as we continue to test it). Restoration was done in stages and took many months to complete. Total tech time spent was around 85 hours. We hit a snag when some parts we ordered turned out to be fakes - a sadly common occurrence these days - but we eventually managed to track down some legit replacements. We originally planned to sell this system, but after spending some time patching it, we don’t know if we can let this one go! If this system was set up in a commercial studio here in New York City where it was available for use, would you be interested? If so, please email us. Or, make us a serious offer and if it's tempting enough, maybe we'll sell it. We'd also consider trades for similar vintage modular systems (Roland System 700, Buchla 200, Polyfusion, Emu Modular, ARP 2500, etc). This is a six voice analog Akai VX600 synthesizer. Two oscillators per voice, and it takes minimum 30 minutes to stabilize tuning enough to play. Even so, it also wants 3 or 4 auto-tune sessions. Basses, pads, leads, arpeggios. Please enjoy. While this demo features my original patches, alas - there's no way to backup patches to computer or share them w/ others in that way. Recorded direct via EPM6 mixer to GO-Mixer Pro-X interface to iPhone, no added effects.
The synth output is very hot, so any clipping you hear was overloading the input at the mixer."

"It was released between 1981 and 1984 as the successor to the TR-808, and its unique textured sound can still be heard today in sound sources by a wide variety of artists.

Today's rhythm machines, synths, modules, and software sound generators also feature the 909 sound, making it an indispensable essence for production.

It is the classic sound of machine drums. It is truly a masterpiece of a rhythm machine.

Compared to the TR-808, which uses a full analog sound source, the 909 uses a PCM sound source with 6-bit sampling for the cymbal system.

This hybrid approach is inherited from the TR-808 in terms of the thick kick and toms produced by the analog circuitry, while digital sampling is used for the cymbals.

The unique "that" hardware sound by low-bit sampling. This distinctive sound and the TR-REC sequencer helped solidify its position. House and techno are genres spawned by the 909's sound, and might not have existed without it."

I start with the Prismatic Spray MKii searching around for something showing some fireworks on a new visualization I've been working on...

Then I use the Phantasmal Force to start a sequence on the M8 (which is also MIDI clocked by the PF). I use the PF to unmute various tracks on the M8.

The M8 is also send CC messages to the Prismatic Spray to slowly modulate parameters A, B & C.

It starts in A# - and then moves up a half step to B. The meter gets an extra beat som now we are in 5/4.

Again ...
My guiding principle was - start at A# in 4/4. For each following song, add a beat and move up a half-step chromatically."

Discopolis 2.0/Kris Menace & Lifelike (Novation Circuit Tracks Beach Mix)

"I'm travelling so I hope you enjoy some of the slightly different videos I'm posting. This weeks video is a reworking of a track I put out last month following a suggestion by @DerrynGrierson
I wasn't happy with audio/video on the original (see below) so this is a reworking of the same.

Kris Menace & Lifelike have released multiple versions of the track so I feel pretty justified in putting out another mix of the track! I thought however I had to come up with something new so this was re-programmed and then played live on the beach! The line out went straight into a Zoom LiveTrak L6 so everything you hear is just as it was played on the Circuit Tracks 'on the beach'.

It's harder than it looks playing live on a beach (the tide was coming in....). I missed the filter sweep in the track completely! Stay tuned to the end, if you can, to see what a beautiful place this was played at.

"This week’s track is the 2005 cult club-classic, ‘Discopolis’ by Kris Menace (an alias of DJ Christoph Hoeffel) and Lifelike. Recreating this was suggested by subscriber @DerrynGrierson. Thanks for the excellent suggestion Derryn!

It’s very likely I’ve heard this but it hadn’t been something I’d really noticed. I absolutely LOVE it and it has been a pleasure listening to the (very) numerous mixes and remixes to get an idea as to how to recreate this onto the Novation Circuit Tracks.

It features a very prominent sample from the start of the Italo-disco song 'Another Life' by Kano. Incidentally this sample is also used elsewhere (e.g. by Nero) so you might recognise it. I was able to find and use the same sample and build the song around it.

Everything you hear was programmed and played on the Novation Circuit Tracks. No extra synths/effects were used in the playback and the stereo track has not been remastered or otherwise altered.

I’m trying out a different way of filming/recording these direct to camera so apologies if the video is a bit dark. Almost knocked over the mirrorball too!
