Nora: The Sequel - Better than the original!

Remember Nora? YouTube via burnellyow. via swisstony.
"Features all-new footage and more duets. Better than the original! This is not a trick taught to Nora. She began sitting at the piano at about one-year-old. She's three now. She plays only when the mood strikes her, which is usually several time a times a day for short periods.

© 2007 Yow!/Alexander

CD Now Available! The Laurel Canyon Animal Company just released a CD called "Cat On The Keys," and the featured track is called "Nora's Song." It uses Nora's piano playing from her two videos and puts it together with a jazz band. The song is super cool! Check it out at http://nora.petcds.com

$2 from the sale of each CD is being donated in Nora's name to Best Friends Animal Society http://bestfriends.org"

Plan B returns in '08!

Via Peter Grenader of Plan B:

"We'll be showing a few new things, not as many as in previous years, but the line is more mature now and that's to be expected. We're hoping to have the new case, and two modules which I haven't decided to take them into production as of yet. It depends on the feedback received at the show:

The first is a super-quiet headphone pre which uses the infamous 5532 Opamp.

The other is this device called a Wave Splicer which lets you merge waveshapes together. It senses the zero-crossing of input A and let's you dial when the transition to the second input occurs, but always returns to the first input at the beginning of each wave cycle. You could have a saw going in one and a square from the same VCO in the other, and the splice setting would determine when in the single cycle it would switch between the two. This combo would allow for a saw you could PWM. Infinite combinations would make for some interesting timbres.

Two VCOs at different pitches is another that sounds great, especially sub-octs or two completely different squares as you can PWM the + and - sub-cycle independently of a single waveform. Again - once a wave begins, it will switch to a second input and then back to the first before the next cycle starts again. It will give the four output M15 six completely unique waveform combinations: sine/tri, sine/saw, sine/square, tri/saw, tri/square and saw/square.

The upside of doing it as a module as opposed to just adding that functionality into the VCO to begin with is some of these sound more interesting than others and as an outboard it gives you the potential to morph from other sources, not just the parent VCO.

Both the Headphone Pre and the Wave Splicer are 4HP.

SynthLab for the XO - One Laptop Per Child Project

Remember TamTam? (click to check out the video) TamTam is a music suite similar to GarageBand for the OLPC XO. OLPC or One Laptop Per Child is a nonprofit organization that is trying to get laptops in the hands of children across the world, who could not afford one otherwise. You can read more about the program on the OLPC website. They are currently offering a buy one get one free up until Dec 31st, so if you are curious you can buy one for yourself and one will be sent out to a child.

What's interesting to synthheads is it will also feature a modular synth program called SynthLab. Think Native Instruments Reactor, the original Seer Systems Reality and other module based software synthesizers where you connect various components to create sound. SynthLab is "designed for older children who are ready to venture into more sophisticated sound design, SynthLab is a mini-lab for acoustic- and electronic-circuit construction." Pretty cool.

iPhone Synth

YouTube via scribemedia.
"It's very much like Propellerhead's ReBirth (remember that one?) and other step-sequencers. I tried to demonstrate how some of it works but my big sausage fingers +plus+ trying to face my MacBook's cam just proved more challenging than I thought.

What's cool about it is that not only can you set each note in each step of the sequence, but the type of oscillator per note (ie square, sine or white noise for snares/claps), the volume of each step, and you've got 3 octaves to choose from.

But that's not the best part - as shown in the video, it's using the iPhone's accelerometer to mess with the filters - the cutoff and resonance.

Battling Seizure Robots via Richard Lainhart

"Friends: just in time for the holidays, here's a new live performance video for your viewing pleasure. This time, I'm jamming with Moldover at Tranzducer .011 on November 30 (2007). I play my Buchla 200e/Haken Continuum system, while Moldover works out on his controllerism rig. This is a completely spontaneous, unrehearsed, undiscussed improvisation, and the first time we've ever played together; while it's camera-audio only and so not the best quality, I think it's worth checking out. The complementary video improvisation was provided by Bert Baldwin.

("Battling Seizure Robots" is the name of one of the video animations I created for this performance, which, perhaps fortunately, you don't see in this clip.)

"I was asked to participate in the show about a year ago. I have been long time friends with Peter Grenader from Plan B modular (Ear Acoustic). He had been playing around with the idea of doing a show with artists and friends he admired. I have always loved Peter's work. His music and the piece "The Secret Life of Semiconductors" he played is one of my favorite analogue pieces to date. I was very excited at working with Peter and doing a show with him. It turned out to be a complete success and I was extremely happy to meet the other artists like Alessandro Cortini, and Chas Smith who I have been a long time fan for many years. It was a very interesting to see how everyone approached using these new and old machines to make compositional works. I unfortunately couldn't bring out my modular stuff, as I have strict weight lifting restrictions from only having my surgery months ago. So I had to play on my computers which I know many people might have frowned on me for, but it was the only way I could participate in the show. I was just happy to be there and experience the show."

PARSONS STUDENTS ROCK OUT AT HANDMADE MUSIC EVENT

"Innovative Class at Parsons Teaches Students How to Create Musical Instruments From Found Electronics And Other Objects

New York, December 18, 2007- Armed with two toy robots named Freddy and Teddy, a violin with a bow made out of cassette tape, and a synthesizer assembled from a 1960s electric guessing game, last weekend students at Parsons the New School for Design took to the stage to perform rock songs they created out of these and other found objects.

The event marked the end of an innovative course offered through the Communication Design and Technology Program at Parsons called Mr. Resistor, which taught students how technology can serve as a form of creative expression. They were equipped with basic knowledge of electronics and then challenged to create handmade musical instruments that they performed together as a rock band.

The performance took place at The Openhouse in SoHo and was born out of a burgeoning DIY music movement where artists take the debris of everyday life, for example an amp made from a Ritz cracker box and instruments made from Gameboys, irons and electronic toys, and turn them into musical instruments to play at events such as Handmade Music Night and Music for People and Thingamajigs. It was cosponsored by Create Digital Music, a webzine and community site for musicians using technology, Etsy, a website selling D-I-Y products and Make Magazine, a magazine devoted entirely to DIY technology projects.

'The course teaches students how to use technology to make art. With simple electronic tricks, students are able to tap into their creative potential and make instruments and music out of their own imagination' said Ranjit Bhatnagar, a faculty member at Parsons who taught the course and who is also an artist creating music out of found objects, such as a wind-up noisemaker and a Theremin-playing robot.

In the course, which has 13 students and is in its third year, students were taught basic electronic manipulation such as circuit bending and encouraged to creatively explore this technology to create instruments. The instruments range from an electric hurdy gurdy (a stringed instrument) made of an old synthesizer and operated by a wooden crank, to an electric cello made from two-by-fours a student found in the hallway of the school. Please visit the course blog (http://www.doot.com/resistor07/) for descriptions, images and video of the instruments.

'The Communication Design and Technology programs encourage hands-on experimentation, collaboration, and creative risk-taking,' commented Colleen Macklin, Chair of the Communication Design and Technology program at Parsons. 'The Mr. Resistor class -- and departmental band -- is a great example of these processes.'

Parsons BFA Communication Design and Technology Program. Offering BFA degrees in Communication Design, and BFA and MFA degrees in Design and Technology, Parsons engages students in these programs in typographic exploration to geek graffiti, book design to game design, information visualization to animation. The programs form a dual curriculum that emphasizes experimentation, collaboration and social activism in the design of media experiences and new narratives for all kinds of people, in all kinds of places, around the world.

The program educates students about the social and cultural implications of technology through an interdisciplinary course of study that includes interactive media, motion graphics, animation, and game design and prepares students who are seeking careers in interactive media, film and television, motion graphics, animation, product development, advertising and fine arts. For more information, please visit www.parsons.newschool.edu/dt.

Located in the heart of New York City, Parsons The New School for Design is one of the most prestigious and comprehensive degree-granting colleges of art and design in the nation. Parsons has been a forerunner in the field of art and design since it’s founding in 1896. Parsons’ rigorous programs and distinguished faculty embrace curricular innovation, pioneer new uses of technology, and instill in students a global perspective in design. The Electronic Room in The Deutsches Museum and The Siemens Modular

Beyond those glass doors lies the electronic instrument room in the Deutsches Museum. Peter Forrest, author of the excellent A-Z Books, posted a question on the AH list asking if anyone heard of the "Siemens modular synth from around 1970, with a very large number of oscillators, a pin matrix, and an interesting triangular design? This is later than their early (pretty magnificent) synthesiser / vocoder." Apparently The Deutsches Museum has one and it is most likely behind that door with more electronic goodness. I ran a quick search on flickr for The Deutsches Museum and found it. Update: Turns out this is not the synth Peter was referring to. The one he is referring to has a triangular design like a pyramid. If anyone has any more info on this unique synthesizer, please post a comment or contact me. My contact info is on the bottom right of this site.

"Whenever you are in the Museum, make sure to visit the HighVoltage Show and the "Bergwerk".

The Siemens Studio is featured on 6 pages in issue 03/07 of the "Synthesizer-Magazin". You can still get a copy here (in German only).

What looks like a modular synth is indeed "just" a bank of oscillators built 1956. It features 1 Tieftongenerator (Dual) which is a Dual-LFO, 19 oscillators (sinus or sinus to square variable, AR Env) and a Noise Generator (takes static noise from an FM receiver). There is a patchpanel to interconnect the oscillators.

There is a CD available with music recorded in that studio:
