Roland Ace Tone Top-1

images via this auction via Dave

"Fabulous-looking and displaying synth/organ made by Ace-Tone, the predecessor of Roland. This is the Top-1 organ, which utilizes what sound like sawtooth waveforms to generate tone. It is polyphonic, but I have no idea if it's analog or digital. I'm guessing the latter, since analog polyphony didn't really exist in the '60s. [I'm guessing analog divide-down technology - if you know, feel free to comment]. All I know is this thing looked great set up next to my tiki mug collection, but the girlfriend has decreed that it is time to make room her our ever-increasing pile of makeup and tampons or whatever.

As you can see from the images, the legs unscrew and are stowed in the detachable lid, similar to the Yamaha CS-series synths. There are a trace amount of scuffs in the organ itself, but nothing too fugly. The case itself has about as much wear and tear that you'd expect after 40 years, and the underside of the synth has tape marks. Functionally it's perfect except for the first white B key inexplicably plays one octave too high. However, if you are high yourself, you probably won't notice.

I've seen a few of these organs listed over the last few months, but this is one of the few units that comes with a music stand and almost perfect operability. And as I said before, it looks great. I know that you are attracted, magpie-like to the shiny, shiny red brilliance of this vintage classic. Just bid on it and get it over with, so you can sleep tonight without obsessing."

"A PAiA 4700 modular demonstration tape from PAiA ripped for amusement for others to hear. Not the best, tape static, but this tape is from the 70's so I'm amazed I was able to retrieve the audio anyways. All my tapes 10 years plus are now...well, dead! Damn EMPs! :)"

"More on the end cheeks: once they're off, they're really oddly shaped, so even after multiple applications of methylene chloride, you still end up scraping and sanding to get all the paint off.

Once the sanding, staining, and poly finish is done, they then have to be glued back to the main control panel. I used Gorilla Glue."

LinnDrum II on Roger Linn Design

The LinnDrum II is now up on Roger Linn Design. via MG.

"In January 2007, Dave Smith and I (Roger Linn) pre-annouced BoomChik, a new drum machine product that we are creating together. Since that time, we received many enthusiastic comments and suggestions from musicians around the world that caused us to rethink and enhance the product's design. The bad news is that this design change (along with Dave's release of Prophet '08 and my release of AdrenaLinn III) has delayed our development. The good news is that the product has grown into a far more capable instrument. Also, we've decided to change the name to LinnDrum II, recalling an innovative drum machine from a bygone era. Please read on for more details.

There will be two models: the all-digital “LinnDrum II”, available from Roger Linn Design and the “LinnDrum II Analog”, which adds four voice analog synth voices and 27 dual-function voicing knobs, available from Dave Smith Instruments. We're currently estimating street prices of around $1000 for LinnDrum II and around $1500 for LinnDrum II Analog. Here's a brief summary of the product features:

Features common to both products:
* Operating system is optimized for realtime live performance, with the ability to switch between beats, drop in and out of record on different beats, switch in and out of song mode and much more, all without stopping play.
* Digital voices have nearly the same signal and modulation path--including modulated filters and resonators--as shown on the LinnDrum 2 Analog panel. Total number of voices is not yet determined.
* 16 standard 1.1 inch square velocity and pressure-sensitive drum pads, assignable to sounds, tunings, beats, track mutes, pad mutes or sequence steps.
* Both MPC-style real time and 808-style step recording are provided, and the 16 pads are backlit for visual animation.
* Real-time stereo digital effects on output mix--modulated multi-mode filtering, guitar amp model and bit/sample rate reduction distortion, modulated resonator, compressor, deley, reverb and EQ--with 6 dedicated on/off keys to switch them individually in or out in real time.
* Compact flash slot for data save/load/backup, or for expansion of internal sound storage.
* Internal RAM and flash size is yet to be decided; at least 16 mbytes for each.
* 128 x 64 dot graphic LCD.
* USB port for transferring samples and other files, MIDI messages and audio I/O to and from computer.
* 4 pushbutton soft knobs below the LCD, acting either as soft knobs or soft keys.
* 52 lit buttons for extensive real-time performance control.
* 2 sliders assignable to a large variety of real-time functions.
* HELP key gives descriptive text for any screen, data field, function key or knob.
* Pressing DETAILS key followed by any panel key presents a screen of settings related to the key pressed.
* 2 pairs of stereo outputs, with phones output fed from either pair.
* Stereo inputs for sampling, audio processing or triggering sounds.
* MIDI in and out.
* 2 inputs for either foot switches or expression pedals, assignable to a wide variety of functions.

Additional features on Dave's LinnDrum II Analog:
* Four complex analog voices based on the same Curtis-chip synth voices used in the highly-aclaimed Prophet '08 and Evolver keyboards.
* Four direct ouputs for the four analog voices.
* 27 dedicated dual-function rotary encoders for voicing the analog and digital voices.

There's still a lot of work to do so late 2008 is our best estimate of when the products will be ready. If you'd like to be updated on the progress and informed when we're ready to ship, or if you have any comments or suggestions, please send us an email. And to all those whose comments and suggestions helped refine our design (special thanks to Noaka for help on the visual design), please accept our sincere thanks.

Thanks,

Roger Linn"

Waldorf Wave

images via this auction. via Rob. Note how thin the front panel is. In the bottom shot you can see the width from the back.

"Included in the auction: The Wave with the original english user manual in boxed ringbinder, the software boot floppy disk, 6 other floppy disks with extra soundbanks, a spare pair of new, unused shock obsorbers (lift the front panel up) and some new spare CEM chips x4 (filter / vca chips)

The synth is an absolute beast and sounds amazing. The Wave is a true pro flagship, that was certainly NOT made to budget. Its also a total dream for synth programming with 61 knobs, 84 buttons, 8 sliders and huge LCD display.

Super rare synth, famous abusers include Hans Zimmer, the Orb, DJ Sasha, Depeche mode, R&S studios, Dave Angel etc. In total there were about 200 Waves made, i can only recall seeing a few turn up on Ebay in the last few years, but one just sold on Ebay germany for just over 6500 euros (over £5000), without any manuals or spares."

"Build in 1984 by the french company Techni Musique based in Clermont-Ferrand. This unit has also been massively produced for the Amstrad 464/6128 and distributed in primary schools with the “Plan informatique pour tous”.

Unfortunately the Commodore 64 hadn’t a big success in France so this Commodore 64 version seems to be quite rare! It plugs into the cartirdge port of the Commodore 64/128 and features 2 audio outputs"

Apollo 8 -- Third Rock From The Sun

YouTube via Goldenthrush.
"You are sitting at a computer that could have handled the entire United States space program during the 1960s, as well as Russia's, with enough left over to rule the world if you were so inclined.

In fact, according to vintage computer sites, you could have done this with a cheap pocket calculator made today.

Yet the space program was built on such primitive technology, and that in turn pulled along home technology to give us in a small laptop more than they ever thought possible.

This is a brief retrospective of the Apollo 8 mission, from blast off to splash down, you can find the entire 20 minute piece on the Internet Archive, of course.

The music involves Filtered Coffee.

See, for Tedd's birthday, the older boy and I were going to get him a filter called... Filtered Coffee. So we call Analogue Haven. They don't have it, and they're the only place that would have it.

So I ask them to let me know when one comes in, thinking we'll get it for Christmas.

A few days before Christmas... They get it in. Yay! --Except it's right before Christmas!

BUT after Christmas, I email, and yay, they still have it! So we ran down and got it.

Of course, Tedd has to play with his new toy. He finally comes back in grinning and says "It's not timid!!"

Yes, dear, the entire neighborhood is aware of this.

So using a Yamaha (I think!) drum machine, the Hammond S6 with the Filtered Coffee, Moog Voyager filter sample and hold, and the Moog MG1 with an octave divider (I have to put all this down for you equipment junkies), Tedd went retro to the bone.

So, in the style of Telstar, but a lot grungier, we give you Third Rock From The Sun.

(Yes, as a matter of fact, I did re-upload this three times. But it's corrected now!)

Octave The CAT

images via this auction

"This is the best of the 3 different Cat's made. It has the super thick -24 db low pass filter. It has the coolest Sample and hold features. You can S&H osc 1,osc 2, & the filter or any combo of the 3. I really like how the sine waves are on sliders so you don't have to change between them, you can use all of them if you like at the same time. You can even control the the glide with a foot switch. and/or Cv the filter, osc 1 ,lfo. Polyphony - Mono/Duo-phonic Oscillators - 2 VCO's (2 sawtooth, 2 square wave, and 1 triangle) plus 2 sub-oscillators LFO - 1 with sample-and-hold Filter - 1 with sample -and-hold VCA - 1 VCA, 2 EGs- AR and ASDR Keyboard - 37 keys Memory - None Control - CV/Gate Date Produced - 1980-81"

Update via microtonal in the comments:
"There are a few inaccuracies in the description. You can APPLY S&H to VCO1, VCO2 or the VCF. You cannot S&H VCO1, VCO2 or VCF, only Noise or VCO1. Also, there are no sine waves on the Octave CAT.

Note the missing knob caps in the photo. These white knobs are impossible to find today."

MUSE Receptor

images via this auction

"version 1.0. The unit comes with a 160gb hard drive and 256mb of RAM. You can easily upgrade the specs through MUSE. For those of you who do not know what the Receptor is, here is a brief overview.

The Muse Receptor Rev C is a 2U rack-mountable module that runs standard Windows VST instruments and effects. Receptor can process and play back 16 simultaneous audio sources, which can be either internal VSTi instruments or external analog/digital inputs. It can also run up to 57 VST effects at one time. But that barely hints at what you can do with Receptor!

* Play, edit and store VST plug-in effects and instruments on a hardware device
* Incredibly powerful and versatile
* Intuitive mixer-style interface handles up to 16 audio sources at once
* Connects to your Windows or Mac computer for downloading and editing presets
* Comes with free VST plug-ins!

This is the perfect tool for either live performance or in the studio. You can now use all you virtual instruments without the limitations of your CPU."
