Roland Jupiter 8 acting strangely

YouTube via zibbybone
"I just received this JP-8 I purchased from a seller that stated "ALL ORIGINAL LOW HOURS. WORKS GREAT, LAST OWNER USED IT FOR ONES AND TWOS." First, it pwoers up and 4 of 8 voices play. Both Solo and Unison mode produce noise. Arpeggiator does not work. Later, the synth just wigs out. Any Jupe 8 owners out there ever experience this or have any input? Sorry, the audio is a bit overdriven. "

Roland TR-808 and Jazz Chorus JC-120

via swissdoc:

"I recorded some examples of the Roland Jazz Chorus driven by a TR808 pattern.

This one is recorded in mono with a Sony F-VS7 Dynamic Microphone, I had to do some noise reduction to get rid of the prominent hum:

This one is recorded in mono with a Monacor ECM-100 Electret Condensor Microphone:

The dry signal is recorded directly from the TR808.

I then allways tweak the settings of the amp.

Volume is set to very low value, max 1 out of 10. Otherwise the house would explode.

The distortion of the amp is not the best one on this planet. They should have labeled it destruction or shredder :-)"

Analogue Systems Eurorack Modular Sequence 1

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"Here is a demonstration of just a few possibilities using the Analogue Systems rs310 Reverb/Chorus, rs290 Delay/Sampler, rs200 Sequencer, rs100 Low Pass Filter and other modules.

First you hear the bass into the Reverb/Chorus module, then the reverb time is tweaked. Then a sequence is sent from the CV out of the rs200 to the CV in of the rs310 Reverb/Chorus giving us some great sequenced overtones.

Next a random sequence is brought in with the Signal Mixer module. This sequence is going into the Delay/Sampler module. The delay time is then modulated by the LFO module and you can see the digital readout of the delay time rapidly changing.

The final bass drone sequence is brought in which is running the Low Pass Filter module. Then we tweak the frequency cutoff.

Zoom Sampletrak ST-224 - ZMF Producer

via Plutonik9:
"Hi, I'm not sure if this is useful for your blog, but I found (very randomly) something that Zoom Sampletrak ST-224 owners may find quite useful & fascinating. Put simply, it's an unreleased (lost) piece of software called 'ZMF Producer' (I've never seen it mentioned anywhere ever) from Zoom corp. which allows (though a GUI) creation/editing of .zmf banks via computer! It's hard to understate the importance of this piece of software because it allows ST-224 users to do things that have NEVER (ever) been possible;

-Create custom .zmf banks though software (win95/98/2000/xp) GUI. Allows importing of AIFF & Wave Files and drag & drop assignment to 24 pads.
-Graphical control of start/stop & offset points of samples via a waveform display window
-Exporting (extracting) of wave files from .zmf bank files (Previously impossible without re-recording the analogue outputs).
-(Almost) full control over sample parameters in software (tune, trigger mode, panning, reverse & effect on/off & start/end/offset sample position markers). *Only lacking midi note number assignment to the pads, this'll still need to be done from the unit itself.
-Importing/Exporting .smf song files (not editing unfortunately).

Up until this piece of software was discovered, all these things had tobe manually (and tediously) set from the ST-224 front panel. Wave &Aiff import was possible, but required so much work that it wasn'treally practical. The only additional piece of hardware required for it's use is a smartmedia reader (I've got a SanDisk USB one) to dump the .zmf files from your computer for loading into the unit.

The version number of the software says 'Version 0.0.13.4' copyright 1999 (sounds extremely beta). No reference to this software is on Zoom/Samson's site or in the manual & a Google search for "ZMF Producer" yields no result.

Anyways the Sampletrak has been discontinued for probably 10 years, what a surprise to stumble across this randomly all these years later. Makes you wonder what sought of attention this 'poor man's MPC' would have gotten had this been made available to the public?
Truly a mystery for the ages!

I've started a Yahoogroup for Sampletrak users and added this program (plus some shareable .zmf banks) to the files section @ http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Sampletrak/"

"It occurred to me that this was perhaps what Zoom used internally (by development team) to create the demo bank (Jungle Man?) that is hard coded into the ROM (can be retrieved with factory reset). Hence, why it was created....and perhaps why it never was taken any further or released to the public?"

Synthorama - Moog Modular, Voyetra and Oberheim Room

images here

Some notes on the room:
Upon entering the area, on the left is a massive Moog vocoder and the Moog modulars. Yes, plural. In the far left corner is a Buchla Music Easel. From what I could tell it was not hooked up or working. To the right of the Buchla along the back wall of the room is a Steiner-Parker modular (hooked up and working) and to the right of that were two Voyetra 8s with keyboard controller, also working. On top of the Voyetra 8s was a Gleeman Pentaphonic not hooked up or working as far as I could tell. To my surprise the Gleeman's knobs felt rather light and cheap. For some reason I expected them to have a bit more weight to them. On the right wall of the room, opposite the Moog modulars, were the rest of the Octave Plateau synths followed by the Oberheims. See the images for the specifics.

Remember to click on the "All Sizes" link for each shot you'd like to see full size in the set. Click on the synthorama label below for the full set of posts on my visit to the Synthorama synthesizer museum. Note all images are going up including the "bad" ones.

Update: some notes on the Gleeman and Buchla via Martin: "The Gleeman Pentaphonic Clear also works properly. I have it not connected because I am still searching a better place than it has now. This synth earns a better place !!

Also the Music Easel is working fine. Actually it is not connected, I know. In the whole museum there are not a lot synths which do not work. Some of them have bad keyboard contacts or noisy potmeters or sliders but they are working."

FM synthesis waveforms, abstract art?

YouTube via dkimcg
"I was looking at the waveforms after the last video, and started to try to just make cool looking waveforms not really thinking too much of what it sounds like. I can get a pair of eyes with the square morph output, not shown in here, but really like the way these waveforms look as a visual artist. Pretty interesting looking stuff that math can give you.

The oscillators are trying to sync to each other, which causes that jumpiness when the wave cycles back to 0, at least that's what I think's happening. There's a 3rd oscillator acting as an LFO modulating the 1st oscillator as well. both the oscillators are outputting raw waveforms, but the gate even though is wide open may be coloring it ever so slightly, my deaf ears don't hear anything tho. So these are raw, unfiltered, ungated waveforms you are hearing, not for the faint of heart. It can get loud and abrasive. :)"

Yamaha MR-10 Analog Drum Machine

YouTube via peglegjoe857
"MR-10 in action. It is a cool little machine. It is kinda similar sounding to the Roland TR-606 and the Korg KPR-77, but it is not programmable so it has gone pretty unnoticed. It is also somewhat like the early rhythm machines, the CR-68 and 78, TR-66, The Minipops, KR-55, except that it has pads for manually playing it! This makes me think it would make a prime candidate for a mod, adding triggers at it's pads. Probably an easy mod, but I never got around to doing it. I actually think it sounds a bit better than the KPR-77. I have the boss DR-110 as well, which is in the same class as these machines, just missing the toms. Anywho, the MR-10 is nifty sounding and analog. A few neat controls. Small, simple, and pretty cool."

TSP Teaspoon as gate keeper = hang on

YouTube via thetonewrecker
"I decided to try feeding the gate signal from the Acidlab Bassline to control the MC-202, but feed it through the Teaspoon. The CV control for the pitch passes directly, but now I can control the resampling/repeats of the 202 playing back the pitch it is following from the Acidlab. I really like how it grabs part of the trigger pulse and you get these strange clunky chugging retriggers. The 202 is not the best synth to trigger externally since the CV and gate go through the digital section before it hits the analog synth , but it was what I had on hand. More soon."

The design was created with adobe illustrator then printed on vinyl sticker, box is a Retex#5, PCBs are from SmashTV, and knobs are from ALBS (thank you Goblinz !). The work cost me roughly 350€, but because I'm a beginner I burnt a few things... This is far from perfect: the inside is full of cables, the printed sticker is 1mm much longer than the drilled surface, knobs aren't as close of the surface as I wanted, ... but it works !" via sendling.

Steam Powered Synthesizer

YouTube via wessouthern
"This, as its name so clearly suggests, is a synth that's powered by steam. There's no electricity involved -- the instrument can be run on coal, hexamine, ethanol or propane.

he pressure delivered to the engine is controlled by a ball valve seen between the boiler and the engine. The dynamo is much like a brushless, permanent magnet motor which is spun by a belt attached to the flywheel. This creates an alternating magnetic field which is turned into electricity by an inductive pickup.

The steam synthesizer does not use any electricity -- only steam power. In fact it generates electricity! It generates about 6 watts of AC at high pressure and speed." Very steam punk.

FM synthesis with the PlanB Model 15

YouTube via dkimcg
"Apologies in advance for the out of focus camera. This was one of the cool things I learned about using the PlanB (or any capable) oscillators. I have the oscilloscope up so you can see the waveforms. Too bad I didn't keep an eye on the camera. But I do these for fun, and doing it again would be no fun for me. But you can see enough to get the idea. You can get some very fat sounds with harmonic overtones this way. Look up FM synthesis if you're curious. That's frequency modulation. There's also another video on youtube that goes through the explanations better, this is just to show an example, not inform."

Opcode Studio 5 LX

images via Mark via this electro-music.com thread (note this is for sale): "The OpcodeStudio 5LX is a Macintosh MIDI interface. Bitd, this was a monster. It has twice the computing power of a Mac Plus , 256KB of RAM for internal patch storage, 15 MIDI inputs and 15 MIDI outputs. It has two foot switch inputs, a foot pedal input that also accepts logarithmic CV, SMPTE in and out, and an input to sync to audio.

Apparently, some people have been able to get it to work as an interface with OS X. Please take a look on the web. It can also be configured as an extremely powerful stand-alone patchbay/filter with any Mac that can run OS 9, 8, or 7. It can filter, merge, re-channel, split by note and velocity, re-assign and modify control values, etc. It can route MIDI data from any combination of inputs and internal programs to any output. These patches can then be recalled via program change.

This unit has been upgraded to the latest ROM, and includes the original ROM chips, original box, software discs, and all the manuals. It is in excellent cosmetic condition. I'm the original owner, and it worked perfectly the last time I used it, but I have no way to test it now.

Questions and comments welcome.
