SEQ541 - Free Sequencer for OS X

See this post for a video with SEQ541 controlling a Moog Voyager, Little Phatty and Slim Phatty.

"SEQ541 is a MIDI pattern sequencer for OS X. The program is extremely flexible, all it requires is that you have an external MIDI device generating a clock and it will output notes in time to a pattern sequence you specify. Why is SEQ541 for you?

* I wrote this program because I wanted a way to control my Roland SH-32 synthesizer (which does not have a built-in sequencer) in time with my Korg ER-1 Rhythm synthesizer (which does have a built-in sequencer). It works pretty damn well for this purpose, especially live, where I would rather be playing pre-programmed melodies and basslines and tweak the knobs in real-time.
* If a full-blown sequencer is too much software for your music, then pattern based music programming might be the way to go. My musical background all started with MOD files, so I've never really let go of the pattern paradigm for music composition. SEQ541 is a great tool for doing pattern based composition with your MIDI gear.
* If you have a MIDI synth with a built-in sequencer, you can use SEQ541 to visually edit sequences for the device, then play then back into the device while it's recording. I use SEQ541 to do this with my Korg EA-1.
* If you're a software synth person, SEQ541 works really well for controlling software synths like Native Instruments Absynth or Waldorf A-1 in time with your external MIDI hardware.

If you have a hardware (or software) synth that you wish you could control using patterns, this is your program!

If enough interest (read: cash) is generated for this program there are a lot more features I would like to add, but for now, it does everything I need for my music. :-)
features (limitations?)

* you can't record patterns, only input them via mouse
* 128-note polyphony
* you can run as many pattern sequencers simultaneously as your CPU can handle
* you can store as many patterns as you want per sequencer
* while playing, transitions to the next pattern don't occur until the current pattern is done playing
* variable pattern length: 16, 32, 48 and 64 notes
* variable note length: 16th note through whole note in 16th note steps
* fixed note-on velocity 0x64
* play/stop must be driven from an external MIDI source
* MIDI clock must be from an external MIDI source
* can drive any hardware or software MIDI device
* can echo MIDI clock to the external MIDI device (for arpegio or whatever)"

Last Ditch Effort - Modular Patch by The B-Roll

"The patch started as a simple bass sound through a WASP filter. I worked in the rotating clock divider and the regular clock divider and began adding higher pitch melodies. Both melodies are semi-random created using a couple sample and hold modules each being fed a different LFO."

Gestures Gear VBlog: Roland Juno-106 and Sequential Circuits Prophet 600 Duet

YouTube via AccumulatedGestures | January 29, 2011 |

"Casey plays a quick jam on the Juno-106 and Prophet 600, recorded into Cubase with no EQ or effects. The first half is played with the Juno providing chords and the Prophet providing the lead, before Casey swaps over for the second half.

There is a lot of talk about the slow envelopes of the Prophet 600 but I haven't seen many clips on Youtube really show what it sounds like when in action. Mostly, its flattering strings/pad synth videos that sound incredible. In truth, the envelopes are not a problem for a lot of sounds and it really does sound AMAZING as a string synth, but there are some sounds that are problematic for the software envelopes.

When Casey is soloing on the Prophet, the slows envelopes sound fine and the Prophet VCO sound really cuts through as a nice lead compared to the mellower Juno. However, once Casey switches over to comping on the Prophet the lag of the envelopes becomes quite obvious and distracting. Clearly not a job the Prophet will be filling in our music.

More videos of the Prophet and the Juno are to come. Apologies for the shallow depth of field - still getting used to filming with a Canon 5D.

About us:
The Accumulated Gestures are an 8-piece neo-soul/funk band from Perth, Western Australia. With lead vocalist/producer Donovan de Souza being an avid collector of synthesizers and vintage keyboards as well as a current move towards incorporating more synthesizers in our band sound, our Gear VBlog aims to show the strengths and limitations of synth interfaces, synthesizers and other musical gear. The kind of videos Donovan would have liked to see when he was buying electronic gear in the first place."

Module #4 - Magnus Danielson sawtooth phase shifter

YouTube via Gameboygenius | January 29, 2011 |

"(Bad) schematic and theory of operation: http://home.swipnet.se/cfmd/synths/sc...

The original sawtooth frequency doubler ("octave shifter") works by "cutting the sawtooth in two", to double its frequency. The phase shifter lets you modulate where the wave is "cut", in other words, it allows to shift the phase of the wave. Instant fattification!
Of course, this module can be abused, just like any other module."

Grid Music for iPad — composition basics & Excerpt of "In C"

"Grid Music is a fun new way to compose music. Construct a miniature music machine on your iPad!

** See Grid Music in action: watch the video demo at http://gridmusicapp.com **

- Simple to use: just tap cells to change what they do, and swipe between them to connect them together. Cells can send "charges" out into the grid like an electronic circuit, play notes when charges touch them, or change the kind of sound Grid Music plays.

- Performance and composition in one tool: modify your composition as it plays, and switch parts of it on and off in real time by connecting and disconnecting.

- Embrace randomness: give charges a choice and they choose by chance, allowing you to create an ever-shifting non-deterministic composition.

- Save and recall your compositions: bookmark your favorites and return at any time. Everything is saved, including the position of charges on the grid."

M-Audio VENOM mapped to an Ozonic via MIDI CC.mov

YouTube via rudiedisone | January 22, 2011 |

"I wanted to try out my new M-Audio Venom synth with an external knob controller, so I hooked it up to my old school M-Audo Ozonic via MIDI , mapped out 16 CCs to the knobs and sliders (ADSR on the sliders, cutoff, resonance, ocillator pitch etc on the knobs), and it worked great!

After tweaking around with that for a bit , I recorded some basslines right from the phrase sequencer in Venom into Ableton Live while tweaking them in real time. Then I added some drumloops, and a synth accent from Ableton's Operator FM synth, which actually is the only MIDI sequenced part here.
Here's what I came up with.

P.S.-I am really digging this Venom! It's a pretty inspiring piece of kit, has killer sounds and the audio interface works great with Ableton. Next vid, I'll try some stuff with the audio inputs."

M185 software step sequencer - work in progress

YouTube via dnigrin | January 28, 2011 |

"New software step sequencer, inspired by Ryk's M185 hardware DIY sequencer. Built with Cycling 74's Max/MSP. Work in progress, not done yet..."

Update via Dan on the AH list:
"To address the avalanche of questions I've gotten since -- fueled by the success of my software Klee (http://defectiverecords.com/klee), this is a software recreation of a step sequencer inspired by RYK's M-185 hardware DIY step sequencer - some examples and more info:

http://sys100m.org/viewtopic.php?t=154&sid=539defbded7364e82a6678c84f35daca
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vK1PoQffhjk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Swi2fNeNCuE

Basically, this sequencer works by advancing the pattern through (up to) 8 stages. Each stage can have have anywhere from 1 to 8 clock pulses that are advanced through. Each stage has a note value. The stage operates in 1 of 4 possible gate modes: Mute, Single, Multi, and Held. In mute mode, the stage is silent for however many clocks it is set for. In single mode, the note triggers for the first clock of the stage, and then it is silent for the remainder of clocks (if any) in the stage. In multi mode, the note is retriggered for each clock of the stage. Finally, in held mode, a single note is held for the duration of all of the clock pulses of the stage.

As Mark Rivera said a while back on AH, the M185 is "... the only alternate concept to x0x, knob-row, and arpeggiator styles. It's all three but none of them?"

That's the basic idea. Of course, there's details - you can change the clock pulses from anywhere between whole notes to 1/32nd notes. You can change the gate duration times. You can change the direction of the sequence through the stages - forward, backward, ping pong, and random. You can control the total number of clock pulses in a pattern, irrespective of the number of stages.

The software version will have most of the features of the hardware sequencer, plus more (still being finalized!). It will work with MIDI rather than control voltages/triggers. It will send MIDI to any MIDI device (hardware or software), and will work with either an internal clock or MIDI clock. It can also host a VST instrument plugin. It will save and load presets.

Mac and PC, cheap like all of my software. I hope to have it ready within the next 1-2 months, real life notwithstanding!

Dan"

Chaka Khan - I Feel For You (Moog bass along)

YouTube via Geeljasjes | January 28, 2011 |

"How the track was put together:

The original Chakakhan version is extremely over produced, so it took me a while to get the same sort of result.

The machine drums at the start, which keeps on running throughout the whole track, was originally done using a DMX, Linn and TR808. All these can now perfectly be recreated inside Reel Machines by XLN-Audio.
I wasn't really pleased with Reel Machines initially, but having given it a second chance it's rather convincing and pleasant to work with.
After the rap intro Addictive Drums kick in, to put another layer of drums ontop and to give it a live feel, which I do with all my tracks.
My aim is always to find the middle between the original recording and a live feel.

I could have left Melle Mel rap out, unless I had the original isolated track, but no one has that luxury, so I did it myself.
Only then I realized how difficult that rap was. Not having an American accent and of course Melle's deeper voice makes it somewhat sound silly, but it's effective enough (I hope?).

A lot of Prophet-5 and Jupiter-8 was used, especially all the brass sounds.
The harmonica was another difficult thing to replicate.
I used a sample from my TR-Rack.
The Minimoog is completely unprocessed."

JH Fixed Filterbank (Haible, analog, Moog 907 Emulation)

via this auction

"This is an emulation of the famous Moog(R) 907 Fixed filter bank. (Moog is a registered trademark of Moog Music.)

It's an all-anlogue design that uses GIC-Circuits to emulate the Inductors of the original.
("GIC" stands for "General Impedance Converter". This is quite different from the rather noise Gyrator circuits that can often be found in electronic emulations of Inductors.)
The benefit of this design is that it behaves like an inductor - and can be (and *is*) connected to the same topology of a passive filter as in th eoriginal circuit, just like in the Moog Modular System.
Thus, the sound of this module is painstakingly close to the original, including all these notches in the frequency response that can immedately be recognized as the typical "Moog Filterbank" coloration of the sound.

You are bidding on my [JH's] personal prototype. I have originally designed it to become a MOTM (Synthesis Technology) module (which it may, or may not become, some time :) ). I liked the 19" Rackmount format better, so the prototype is in this format, with all potentiometers in a row. It has a beautiful machine-milled frontpanel from Schaeffer Apparatebau in Berlin, but it's still an open-frame construction, as th epictures show. You need a +/-15V power supply for this, like MOTM or other modular systems offer. It's likely that it will also run on +/-12V, but I have only tested in on +/-15V."

CHAMBERLIN RHYTHMATE Drum Machine

via this auction

"Approx. 15 7/8” wide x 11” deep (including knobs) x 6 3/4” tall (including steel bracket -- 5 1/8" tall without). Total weight: 15 lbs.

DESCRIPTION:
Rare, vintage drum machine.
Chamberlin Rhythmate model 20. Serial #4151. 14 tape loops, each loop with 3 different prerecorded drum tracks on it. Volume and tempo controls. Power indicator light. Single RCA jack on back. New 9 volt battery and 1 amp fuse included. (Note that this model does not have an internal speaker. Use an RCA to 1/4" plug to play through your guitar amplifier.)

Plywood cabinet finished with wood grain plastic laminate (formica). Painted aluminum face plate. There is a large steel bracket mounted on bottom bearing the Chamberlin manufacturer's plate (this bracket hugs the edge of my kitchen counter nicely, but presumably also functions as a means to hang the unit vertically, face plate up).

Circa mid 1970s (assuming the wiki article below is accurate), but the technology definitely belongs to the 1950s-60s. USA.

According to the wiki article below, fewer than 700 Chamberlins (comprising all models) were made 1951-1981, with fewer than 50 working examples accounted for today. "
