"Augur by Antti is an emulation of the Prophet VS by Sequential Circuits from 1986 -the worlds first Vector Synthesis synth. Augurs 4 oscillators each get their sound from one of the 96 different waveforms. In the vector matrix it is possible to determine how loud each oscillator will be and to draw a path for the sound to travel between the 4 oscillators -letting them morph into each other.

Unfortunately the Augur VST plugin doesn't support the drawing of user defined waveforms, as the original Prophet VS features. But it's still a very cool free VST synth, capable of producing some very interesting sounds."

New Swamp 2011 - Sounddemo 01

YouTube Uploaded by HGFSynthesizer on Apr 24, 2011

"New Swamp in 2011 - A completely reworked version of Swamp so there are a quite a few differences to the prior versions and a hugely increased sonic potential! Just listen.

There is only one TimbreModulator but with selectable input source: Osc 1, Osc2 or even both! Instead of the 2nd Timbremodulator there is a 'real' Ringmodulator, yes, the real deal as far as software can do it! The mod Oscillator for RingMod ranges from approx. 7Hz to 100Hz, so the typical 50Hz AC is possible. As RingMod generates the sum and difference of the input signals it can give quite a low punch. This one is with selectable input source: Osc 1, Osc2, plus the output of TimbreMod too! As both of these soundshapers have great capabilities to transform the signal of the oscillators they have both independant outputs and are treated as secondary soundsources.

Thus the new Swamp has quite increased sonic capabilities at this stage already. Anyway the SF2 oscilators come with 256 carefully selected waves though some maybe suited better for RingMod while others are better suited for TimbreMod.

Of course there is the wellknown resonant 24dB LowPass filter with a 4 channel adaptive mod mixer so 4 source can be mixed to modulate Cutoff. This is great to create new mixes of LFO modulations.

The output sections has increased a lot. Besides the delay there is a stereo Flanger and Stereo Reverb with PreDelay and LowCutoff to remove lower frequencies for an optimized Reverb response (use this if the rev 'shatters' in low range.

As Modsources there are 3 LFO, 1 S&H, 1 Double LFO with Phase shifting for one which is best useful for the flanger. Also there is a new Gator which effect can be mixed (w. optionaö modulation) on the output level so you can adjust the amount of gating on the output, with enhanced routings including modulating pan of the delayed signal. Also Aftertouch and Modwheel are used extensively as optional modsources.

have fun

illucia: a modular codebending instrument

illucia: a modular codebending instrument from paper kettle on Vimeo.

Follow-up to this post.
"illucia is a codebending instrument.

Codebending is the exploration of software with "patch points." Patch points expose the inner workings of computer programs, and allow for atypical connections between things like games, music making software, office suites, etc.

illucia is a USB device with physical jacks that correspond to software patch points, which can be connected and disconnected using patch cables. Thus, illucia is a console for routing information between computer programs, and opens strange relationships across systems that don't usually interact - it turns systems themselves into play objects.

I've written several codebendable games / programs that open their inner workings via patch points. Fascinating and unexpected things happen when connecting otherwise-unrelated programs:

Video games can play other video games. Music synthesizers can control word processors. Feedback loops turn everyday software tropes into generative art. Simple AI is patchable. Anything controls (and can be controlled by) anything; in codebending, every system becomes an instrument with a unique voice, ready to control, and be controlled.

illucia is a physical instrument to explore these kinds of connections - it is a way to treat systems as playgrounds.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This video is a teaser/trailer: it features illucia, and the first wave of codebendable games that I've created:

PCO (Paddle Controlled Oscillator): a classic ball and paddle game. When pushed, it morphs into a function generator and spills abstract art.

Soviet Life Sequencer: falling Tetromino pieces generate step sequencer patterns, all remixable by Conway's Game of Life.

War Machine: a crosshair blasts colorful explosions into a dense nest of shoots that approach from above

Miserable Pile of Secrets: a codebendable text editor

I'll be releasing these games in a few weeks. All will be 100% free to download, and open under Creative Commons.

You don't need illucia to codebend or interact with these games - they speak OSC and can easily be routed into each other, or other programs / physical controllers. Visit paperkettle.com/codebending for more information

I finished illucia and these games several months ago, and have been steadily working on other material since then... This is just the beginning. I'm quite busy at the moment, and I've got a lot of surprises in store.

More videos and deeper documentation are on the way... RSS/Bookmark/Twitter/FB for information
