YAMAHA VSS-200 Sampling Keyboard

via this auction
"The VSS-200 is the strangest of Yamaha's portatone series, and definitely the rarest.

However, true to their quirky nature, this latter feature is precisely what makes the VSS-200 so unique. You can capture any of the 100 (awful) onboard FM tones into the unit's sampler, and then run the resulting tone through the 9 DSP effects: loop, u-turn, reverse, FM, AM, fuzz, echo, level and pitch; many in combination. You may then layer as many additional sounds into the built-in microphone for some real fun grime cheez. Plus, there's a real ADSR that's fully adjustable.

Happily, there's no automatic power off like there is on the lesser models, so you need not worry about losing your sample after 7 minutes of non-use. Lots more fun than an SK-5, with many more options. Dunno if it can be easily circuit-bent though...

Case is handsome, functional, and easy to navigate. Overall, a lo-fi wet-dream come true. Worth looking out for. A nice addition to your dairy section."

Synth Gods Dedicated to Bob Moog

via the Bob Moog Foundation newsletter:
"Keyboard Magazine Presents: Synth Gods, edited by former Keyboard editor Ernie Rideout, includes interviews from the last 40 years with some, but not all, synthesizer legends from the 70s and 80s -- both musicians and designers. Included in the group are Wendy Carlos, Brian Eno, Rick Wakeman, Dave Smith, Richard Barbeiri, Jan Hammer, Edgar Winter, Prince, Bernie Worrell, Joe Zawinul, Jean-Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream and Bob Moog.

Synth Gods was dedicated to Bob by the author.

You can read a review of Synth Gods here.

In honor of Bob's recent birthday and in honor of his 50 year career, we are offering Keyboard Presents: Synth Gods, signed by our Executive Director and Bob's daughter Michelle Moog-Koussa, as your gift with a donation of $50.00. This offer runs through May 31, 2011.

Support our programs and honor Bob by making your donation here.

Below is an excerpt from Bob's interview in Synth Gods:

"But musicians always come up with stuff I couldn’t imagine, using my instruments. I can get a sense of whether something would be a good musical resource, but I don’t do music. I’m a toolmaker. It’s always amazing what someone like Herbie Hancock, Wendy Carlos, or Stevie Wonder can come up with. What they’ll do when you put something new in front of them is they’ll turn a couple knobs and listen, and immediately get a sense of where to go. The muse talks to them.”

The “muse” plays a big part in Bob Moog’s own work, though he maintains that he’s anything but a musician. “I call it the Cosmic Network, the source of creativity. It’s really out there. It’s not just for music, it’s for writing, and for designing hardware. I think different people experience it in different ways. Sometimes an idea will come to me as I’m waking up. Sometimes it will come to me here in the office, with the phones ringing all around.

“There’s no way to do this just by opening up an engineering book and finding the formula,” he says. “It’s a matter of judgment and intuition. That’s what I’ve been doing all my life.” He smiles, “I’m pretty good at it now.”

Sequential Circuits MAX 6 Voice

via this auction
"rare Sequential circuits MAX This is a multi timbral fully analog synth with 6 VCO, 6 VCF, VCA, 2 onboard Sequencers, will come with a very nice bonus bundle of editors for it too;)"

Anyone know if the MAX has a velocity sensitive keyboard? If so, this is the one to get if you have a MIDI controller like an iPad. The MAX, Six-Trak, and Multi-Trak have the same synth engine. The Six-Trak does not have a velocity sensitive keyboard. The Multi-Trak does, but it doesn't work with editors from what I understand. It's unfortunate if you want to have both an editor and velocity sensitivity at the same time. Especially with the filter. With the Multi-Trak, you can can some expressive and delicate sounds going with velocity that you simply can't do with the Six-Trak, unless you use an external keyboard with velocity of course. The filter and resonance on these play nicely with velocity sensitivity. The Multi-Trak is editable via the front panel and isn't too bad actually - you select a parameter clearly printed on the synth and turn the knob. But you can't use an iPad for editing multiple parameters at the same time - thing x/y pads, multiple sliders and so on. You can with the Six-Trak and Max.

BTW, see my old Multi-Trak page on the old MATRIXSYNTH site (launched way back in 1997) for a full parameter list and the intro to the user manual.

Pulser Multivox Polyphony MX65 Synthesizer

via this auction

"Up for sale is a very rare analog synthesizer made by Pulser ( Multivox in the USA) Made in Japan. Probably a very early OEM product of Roland. The synth is very simple but you'll get some pretty decent analog strings out of this box.

This unit has a small issue !

The pitch pot does not work as it should.
If you pitch sharp everything is ok but if you pitch flat the value is going way more than flat.
If the pot is on zero position the synth does not make a sound anymore.
Probably a dead op amp, cap etc.

The Polyphony is ok except this issue.
It is clean and all faders / pots have been treated.
No crackling pots/ faders
The keys ar a bit yellow."
