Elektron Analog Four - Full Details & Demos

"The Analog Four is the best of two worlds. The power of analog synthesis is enhanced with precise Elektron sequencing for a machine par excellence. This is an analog synthesizer for the modern age.

The Analog Four is a four voice analog synthesizer. Analog oscillators and filters ensure the most organic sounds imaginable and the Elektron step sequencer caters for the innovative sound control. With sequencer features like parameter locks and variable length per track, intricate Analog Four compositions can be created quickly and efficiently. Add the completely new and incredibly well-crafted effects to the mix and experience the next chapter in analog sounds. It just sounds right.

Not only a splendid sound making device, the Analog Four can also make other gear sing. Thanks to the CV/Gate and DIN sync outputs, legacy analog gear can be controlled in great detail. Sequencer features like arpeggiators and parameter locks will breathe new life in old equipment and make any modular synthesizer rig truly come alive.

Live performance features are aplenty. The special performance mode gives direct access to user-defined parameters and direct pattern change makes it possible to change patterns at any sequencer step. The arpeggiator can be instantly toggled on or off for swirling melody lines. Improvising when playing live has never been this easy. The Analog Four was born for the stage.

The Analog Four offers four synth voices capable of providing that inimitable analog sound. Two analog oscillators, two sub oscillators and a noise oscillator per voice give enormous room for experimentation. They are the starting point for those deep basses, piercing leads, mellow bells and haunting drones - all with a distinctly analog flavor. The power is striking.

Brilliant FX & Dual filter force
The effects section of the Analog Four has been constructed from the ground up and is a perfect match for the strong analog tones. Use chorus, delay and reverb for situating sounds in acid cathedrals, the deepest abysses and head-spinning rotating rooms or for simply adding a final, subtle, audio finish. They make things shine.

Each synth voice features two separate analog filters. The 4-pole lowpass ladder filter and 2-pole multi-mode filter are incredible tools when shaping sounds. To add more sonic crunch, the filter section also contains a fully analog overdrive circuit. The saturation can range from gentle warming to total destruction. All bases are covered.

Total Sound Control
The critically acclaimed Elektron step sequencer gives unprecedented control over synth and FX parameters. Create patterns and songs with ease and use parameter locks to lock track parameters to specific values. It is even possible to change synth patches per sequencer step; an unbeatable method when creating expressive patterns. The dedicated track, of course featuring parameter locks, sending CV/Gate signals is perfect for sequencing external analog instruments. Analog Four is in control.

Wild modulation - The internal architecture opens up for extensive modulation possibilities. Each synth voice offers two assignable LFOs and envelopes, AM cross-modulation, oscillator sync and dedicated LFOs for both pulse width modulation and vibrato. The range of potential sounds is as wide as it possibly can get.

Convenient storage
Sounds can of course be stored. Kits contain complete settings for all tracks, Sounds contain settings for the synth tracks. Save the best Kits and Sounds and create a collection of the most inspiring analog patches, ready to be recalled at all times. No tedious and time-consuming recreation of analog sounds is necessary. This machine is instant and direct.

Full connectivity
All the ports necessary to incorporate the Analog Four in a modern studio are at hand. A headphone output, two main outputs, two external inputs, two dual CV/Gate outputs, a USB port and MIDI IN/OUT/THRU ports featuring DIN sync out means the Analog Four can communicate with everything from legacy instruments and modular synthesizers to computers. It is at home everywhere.

Barton Musical Circuits MWC & UWQ Eurorack Modules

MWC Demo 1

Published on Nov 13, 2012 by boogdish

"New prototype from Barton Musical Circuits. MWC = Multi-Window Comparator. Sorry for the blur, I'm working in a basement and the light's not great.

In a nutshell, this looks at your input voltage, converts it into a number, then looks that number up on a data table and turns a +5V output on if the table tells it to. It does this 4 times, for 4 different outputs. There are attenuation and offset knobs for conditioning the input signal, write/erase buttons for writing the "on/off" tables, and save/load and bank select switches for saving your tables to the internal EEPROM.

The write/erase buttons could also be replaced by input jacks so you're rhythm generating devices could write the tables. The board has euro/motm power connector pads. The board has 2 pc mounted pots, and it also has 4 mounting holes so people can feel free to create their own layout. I am going to try to offer a Eurorack front panel for this as well.

I will be writing build documentation for this soon. I'll have boards/PICs to offer for this next month, and a set will be $20 plus postage."

UWQ Demo 1

Published on Nov 13, 2012 by boogdish

"A dry boring demo of the features of a new quantizer module I've designed. More info will be up at www.bartonmusicalcircuits.com after I get it written.

To summarize: Instead of pre-loaded scales/modes, you're using write/erase buttons to create a data table that records all possible outputs, if you saw my MWC demo, this will seem familiar (I actually copy/pasted some of the code).

There are additional controls for: turning the quantizer off, triggering a new sample (it constantly samples when nothing is plugged into this jack), controlling whether the quantizer quantizes above or below the input voltage, a "softness" control which acts like a voltage controlled portamento with fun interactions with the trigger-new-sample control. It can also save two banks of notes onto the internal EEPROM. There is also a bi-polar/positive only switch so it can interact with more voltage sources.

There are input jacks for the quantized signal, a secondary cv (with attenuation pot), external softness cv (with attenuation pot), write and erase jacks for triggering from external sources, trigger-new-sample, and quantize on/off.

Finally, and I didn't get into this on the demo, the board is set up so that the range of the module is adjusted by just a couple of trim pots (an input attenuator and an output amplifier) so individual builders can decide whether they want more range or accuracy. Different people will use this differently so I'll leave it up to them. On this demo I had it set up for 10V range. The table of possible outputs has 1024 parts (because the PIC has a 10-bit ADC), so this gives me 102.4 pitches/octave. At 5V you'd get 204.8 pitches per octave.

This prototype had a few errors on the PCB, so I'm waiting for a revised PCB to show up (should be in the next couple weeks), and if I got all my errors on that, then boards should be available to ship in early to mid January. I think a board/chip combo will be $22. This uses all through hole components, and pc-mounted pots, but has mounting holes so people don't have to use the pc mounted pots. It has euro/motm power connecters and will work with +/-12v or +/-15v with no modification.

I think I'll also be selling a few of these with hand made front panels if anyone thinks this is a cool module but is intimidated by all of the wiring. This is 8HP in euro-rack."

Kinetik Laboratories Harsh Noise Generator

Published on Nov 14, 2012 by kinetiklab

"Harsh Noise Generator is a minimal sound generator, ideal sound source for your effect chain.

It has two operating modes.

In the first operation mode the frequency of two oscillators varies randomly around the value set with the knobs named FREQUENCY. The output is then processed mathematically to create additional perturbations.

Turning the unit on with the knobs rotated fully clockwise you access the second operation mode. Noise and silence are alternated with intervals that vary randomly around the value set with the DENSITY knob. The INTENSITY knob adjust the noise energy."

Modular Percussion Reason ReFill

Published on Nov 11, 2012 by Audiovapor

"Modular Percussion is a Reason Refill of unique sampled percussive sounds from a modular EuroRack synthesizer. Modular Percussion contains 581mb of content sampled at 24bit 96khz, 50 combinators, and 3 full Kong kits.

The percussive samples were created with the MakeNoise Optomix triggered by an MFB Uzewerg Pro. The sound sources were the WMD Phase Displacement Oscillator, Modcan Dual Wave, Moog Freqbox and Doepfer A-118. The Optomix is an analog, vactrol based voltage controlled Low Pass Gate. Low Pass Gates are commonly used for creating classic modular percussive timbres. The vactrol creates a natural, musical decay, perfect for percussive hits. The MFB Urzwerg Prong" the Optomix with 5 different CV damping amounts, multisampled and layered within Kong. The result is a dynamic, unique percussion soundset simply unavailable anywhere else.

The 50 LPG combinators heavily feature the Echobode and Pulsar Reason Rack Extensions. You must own the Echobode and Pulsar Rack Extensions to use these combinators properly. The combinators feature arppegiators, sequences, effects and filters that create inspirational percussive loops. The 3 Kong kits are all of the multisamples mapped across the pads.

Features:

-581mb of content sampled at 24bit, 96hz. ReFill download size is 284mb.

-50 multisampled percussive hits with 5 layers of Optomix damping (246 samples total).

-50 combinators, 3 kong kits.

-The root note of all the percussive sounds was sampled at "C" at the source. This enables the end user to tune the Kong kits to their preference, perhaps to match the key of their song. The percussion sequences are also all in the key of "C" for easier tweaking.

-For use in Reason 6.5.1 and above."

"Electro Comp Model EML-200 Synthesizer from Connecticut based Electronic Music Laboratories (EML) was most known for producing synthesizers along the same lines of Moog and ARP. The ElectroComp 200 was one of EML's first synthesizers, introduced in 1969. It's old school but has very sophisticated features for the time (such as a Wave Shaper and stereo sound). It is monophonic and includes two oscillators, independent high- and low-pass filters, two ring modulators, an LFO with sample-and-hold, stereo panning, and built-in spring reverb. The front panel of the 200 is nicely designed and laid out (they can be found in either silver or blue, as seen here). There are 31 mad-scientist-looking knobs and over 60 patch points! With a little patching, even people new to analog synths will be able to start getting sounds out of the 200"

XILS-lab Releases Rotary Speaker Emulation Plug-ins

"GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software company XILS-lab is proud to announce availability of its LX122 and LX122 Premium rotary speaker effects plug-ins as of November 5, 2012...

LX122 and LX122 Premium are Mac OS X 10.4 (32-bit PowerPC and Intel) and OS X 10.6 (32- and 64-bit Intel) or later- compatible (VST, AU, RTAS — Pro Tools 7.0 or later) and Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7-compatible (VST, RTAS Pro Tools 7.0 or later) rotary speaker emulation plug-ins, both featuring XILS-lab’s proprietary True Stereo Dynamic Engine (TSDE), offering a whole new way to record rotary speaker effects.

As such, LX122 and LX122 Premium are the perfect partner for present-day organists and keyboardists everywhere — or, indeed, anyone seeking that still-sought-after sound, so first... a little history: the instantly recognisable tone of a Hammond organ/Leslie speaker combo remains a staple of many musical genres — think Procol Harum’s psychedelic multi-million-selling single ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’, one of the standout anthems of 1967’s so-called Summer Of Love. Yet there was little love lost back in 1937 when Leslie speaker inventor Donald Leslie bought a Hammond, hoping it would prove to be a suitable substitute for a pipe organ. Disappointed with its sound at his home compared to the spacious showroom where he had originally heard it in action, Leslie sought to improve things somewhat by experimenting with his own moving speaker designs, finally settling on the now-familiar form of a rotating drum and horn for bass and treble frequencies, respectively.

Until now, a classic rotary speaker system simply comprised a stationary treble unit with spinning horns and a stationary woofer with spinning rotor (or drum), together with two filters to divide the frequency spectrum between the horn and woofer; both the horns and the sound baffle for the bass are rotated to create Doppler effect-based vibrato, tremolo, and chorus effects, while the rotating elements can be stopped, switched between slow (chorale) and fast (tremolo), or transitioned between the two settings. All are effortlessly emulated in LX122’s core modules alongside an authentic recreation of tube-based amplification — one of the most important characteristics of the original concept, which inadvertently paved the way for the heavier rock tones pioneered by the likes of Deep Purple’s Jon Lord, together with three reverb types, and MIDI-controllable SLOW and FAST mode buttons (for individually controlling the horn, drum, or both by keyboard inertia) for added flexibility.

Remaining in the computer-centric 21st Century, XILS-lab recognise that the true sound of a rotating speaker rests principally in how it reacts to the room in which it resides; to that end, the TSDE algorithm adeptly evokes this physical phenomenon. Moreover, the angle of the two ‘recording’ microphones can be tweaked within LX122 and LX122 Premium to allow varying amounts of room effects into the resultant mix, while internal cabinet reflections are also emulated to faithfully capture that much-loved mellowing side effect. It is even possible to increase or decrease speaker positioning from far away to directly within the cabinet itself — impossible with real rotary speakers, of course!

As implied by name, LX122 Premium is fundamentally the same as its LX122 software sibling, yet offers much more sonic scope to the discerning user, including control over microphone movement, room choice, room size, cabinet speed, horn diameter, diffuser removal, speaker configuration, ribbon age, horn and drum balance, rotation direction, and more besides. Digging deeper, its additional Studio Panel allows users to position the microphones anywhere within five different room models, for example, while different cabinet configurations can be chosen within the Cabinet Panel, as well as randomly rotating the horn and drum. Don’t be afraid to experiment; LX122 Premium is even better than the real thing, capable of rotary speaker effects hitherto unheard of in the real world!

LX122 features 14 factory presets to get users started, while LX122 Premium boosts that magic number to 75 by way of ably demonstrating its increased sonic scope. So why wait to rotate?

LX122 and LX122 Premium are available to purchase from the dedicated XILS-lab online Store (http://www.xils-lab.com/products/LX122.html) for a special introductory price of €29 EURO/ $37.00 USD (LX122) and €45 EURO/$58.00 USD (LX122 Premium) until December 5 (respectively rising to €39 EURO/$49.00 USD and €69 EURO/$89.00 USD thereafter). Note: these are serial number-protected products — no iLok required!

Published on Nov 14, 2012 by Rob Papen

"RP-Distort RE is not just a distortion unit, but much more. The distortion unit inside RP-Distort RE can be combined with an analog modeled filter, compressor and widener unit.

These units can be re-order, but also can be turned on or off. So in case you only want a great analog modeled filter... RP-Distort RE can offer this. Or only the unique widener unit which is great for widening a boring mono track.

On top of that, the controls can be modulated using midi sources or by one of the 4 build in LFOs that can sync to your host tempo..

The distortion unit offers 22 distortion types included ring modulator and lo-fi. Inside this section you can also find the EQ and noise-gate.

RP-Distort RE is in fact a wicked FX unit that will distort or alter your tracks in an inspirational way."

Arturia Announces Spark DubStep

Arturia SparkDUBSTEP Presentation

Published on Nov 14, 2012 by Arturiaweb

"Arturia announces availability of SPARK DubStep

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce availability of SPARK DubStep, a powerful production and performance software suite dedicated to heavy-duty dubstep rhythm track construction, as of November 13...

Catering to the rhythmically distinctive needs of discerning dubstep producers globally, SPARK DubStep features a comprehensive library of 30 cutting-edge kits/480 instruments created in partnership with London-based leading pro audio loops and samples provider Sample Magic, themselves cited as being “...one of the elite dance sample venders.” Atomic wobble basses, filthy FX, dirty drums... it’s all there for the taking!

Yet SPARK DubStep is not just another sample library, but rather a complete rhythm track construction kit par excellence, boasting 960 pre-programmed MIDI patterns of harding-hitting drums, virtual analogue synths, and filter-modulated mayhem — perfect for putting together tomorrow’s pure wobble anthemic hits, or revisiting EDM and hip-hop stylings on dub steroids! A remixer’s dream team player, perhaps.

SPARK DubStep’s powerful, yet inherently user-friendly interface makes beat- and bass pattern-creation a breeze — especially when using the step sequencer situated at the top of the default centre panel. Hardware drum machine enthusiasts will feel right at home here. And thanks to advanced looping modes cleverly combined with the XY pad’s real-time slicing and filtering controls, users will be producing stunning breaks with the best of them in no time at all — perfect for live performance!

Each and every one of those 480 instruments comes complete with 12 sound-sculpting parameters to promptly put your own stamp on the resultant sound: modify the noise colour of hi-hats; clip basses using various analogue filters; adjust the LFO rate and depth of a wobble bass... the creative possibilities are almost endless! But musical creativity need not stop there. Far from it, in fact!

Mix fine-tuning is a given, with SPARK DubStep’s integrated 16-channel mixer offering 14 high-quality effects and also mapping of each instrument’s stereo output to the host DAW when seamlessly running as a plug-in (RTAS, AU, VST3) with real- time automation available on all parameters. And it’s even possible to export patterns as .wav or MIDI files to the DAW — simply drag-and-drop any pattern from the currently open kit to have it automatically rendered in the chosen format.

Of course, performers wishing to use SPARK DubStep as a standalone instrument independently from a software sequencer and play it from their favourite MIDI keyboard- or drumpad-based controller are perfectly free to do so. Either way, all onscreen key knobs and pads are easily assignable via MIDI.

So whatever your preference — production or performance, take the next step to dubstep with SPARK DubStep... and beat the future!

SPARK DubStep can be purchased as a software download for €99.00 EURO/$99.00 USD or boxed for €119.00 EURO/$129.00 USD from Arturia’s Online Shop: http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/buy/online-shop.html"

"This is the Ruin Electronics CDS-2 (Compact Drone Synth). This is a one of a kind instrument. It was professionally built and designed by Ruin. The unit has been built into a vintage transistor radio case. Faux wood grain, chrome, and brushed aluminum give it a classy retro look. The CDS-2 is new; no previous owners.

The CDS-2 is a 100% Analog synthesizer in a sturdy case with a fashionable carrying handle. The CDS-2 is a two voice drone synthesizer with CV inputs for pitch and filter frequency. The CDS-2 is not only a Drone and noise Synthesizer, but a sound effects generator. The CDS-2 is excellent for use with sequencers and other modular gear. The filters sound very vocal and organic when in bandpass mode and nice and chunky in lowpass. Paired with the thick oscillators, some strange alien vocalizations can be made. The CDS-2 offers a wide range of sounds with its excellent compliment of functions. There is no other drone/noise/experimental synth out there like this, especially in such a compact package! Despite being small, there is still plenty of room to use the controls so no play-ability is sacrificed.

Space sounds, crackles, hums, percussion, alien speech, warbles, zaps, clangs, bangs, basslines, sequencer runs, rhythms. This is a great unit for performance, sampling, or just plain old fun!

The units approximate measurements are:

7.5" width x 3" depth x 5.5" height

The unit features:

2x Square/Triangle waveform VCOs (Voltage Controlled Oscillators) with individual tuning per oscillator. The oscillators go from subsonic to ultrasonic with a twist of the control.
2x Triangle/Square waveform LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) for modulation. The LFOs can be routed to either the VCF or VCO. Each LFO has a Depth and Speed control and a switch to select either VCF or VCO modulation.
Bandpass/Lowpass VCF (Voltage Controlled Filter). The filter is extremely resonant and will self oscillate when in bandpass mode. The VCFs have a Frequency and Resonance control and a switch for Lowpass/Bandpass response.
2 Channel Mixer Each voice has its own level control which is fed to the final output stage.
CV inputs for VCF and VCO control Both voices share the same VCF and VCO CV inputs so you can easily sequence both voices of the CDS-2 with the same cv. This allows for great layred sequenced sounds.
Output Overdrive The output stage is capable of nice gritty distortion with its own gain control.
1/4" Output
9V battery or DC adapter. With a choice of either 9V battery or external DC adapter the unit can be a portable unit for busking or impromptu outside jam sessions (when accompanied by a portable amplifier such as This ) or a studio piece. Featuring an on board regulator the unit will clean up any power source from 9-15V"

"The built in true analog filter sounds great. You get a ton of control with touch, breath, bite & sliders. I mostly use the touch pad patched into CV inputs on my Korg MS10. The slides move & work like new. You can run any instrument thru its nice filter. I have used the breath out to VCO to control pitch while bite to filter, worked fine but I hardly ever had the tubes hooked to it. Original manual & tubes included, the plastic is still on the data plate..."

Audulus for Mac v. 1.6 Enhances Patch Loading Between Mac and iPad

"SAN FRANCISCO – Subatomic Software has announced the release of Audulus 1.6 for Mac, an update which improves the loading of patches made with Audulus 1.6 for iPad.

Audulus 1.6. for Mac also adds support for the Mac Book Pro with Retina Display.

'Enhancing the round-trip workflow between the Mac and iPad versions of Audulus is important to our users, many of whom are sharing their patches with us on our website's forum,' says developer W. Taylor Holliday. 'Users can, for example, begin a patch on iPad, load it with the Mac and Plug-in versions, and move it back to iPad for patching on the go.'

In addition to syncing up Mac and iPad versions, Audulus 1.6 for Mac improves general graphics performance. 'The graphics optimizations we did for the iPad version also improved the Mac version of Audulus,' says Holliday.

Audulus is a minimalist modular software synthesizer and effects processor. With Audulus, users can build synthesizers, design new sounds, or process audio. All with low latency real-time processing suitable for live performance.

The Audulus user interface was inspired by analog guitar pedals: sounds are created or altered by connecting processing nodes. There are no hidden controls, no complex menus. The user begins with a blank canvas, rather than with daunting controls, and can build up to the desired level of sonic complexity.

Audulus for Mac key features:

Audio Unit hosting - use your favorite plugins
fluid interface - smooth animated interaction
MIDI control - use your control surface or MIDI keyboard
presets - quickly change between settings
unlimited history - everything you do is stored
polyphony - process multiple voices
encapsulation - group nodes into sub-patches
diverse nodes - from ADSR to ZeroCross
audio unit version - run Audulus as an Audio Unit inside other apps (free download)

Audulus is available on the Mac App Store for $39.99, and on the iPad App Store for $19.99. For more information, visit audulus.com."
