hexinverter vcNOIZ on Indiegogo

hexinverter's vcNOIZ is now on Indiegogo. You can find a video of it in development here and an audio demo here. You'll also find a link to demos at the bottom of the Indiegogo page. The following is the description captured for the archives:

"hexinverter.net's vcNOIZ is a unique exponentially voltage controlled noise oscillator for analogue synthesis. It creates absolutely crunchy sounding Commodore 64-esque noise

It will be available in DIY ("do it yourself) form (Eurorack, MU, universal) as well as Eurorack assembled SMT modules.

Full Description:

vcNOIZ is a gritty sounding voltage controlled noise source. The best way to imagine it is as a noise VCO. The frequency of the noise is both linearly and exponentially controllable by analogue control voltage signals. It creates positively raunchy C64-esque digital noise and sounds great for hihats and other sounds as well!

By patching vcNOIZ into a VCA and EG you can create crazy warping noise pads to layer with your other sounds. You can use a percussive envelope and generate awesome sounding hihats. You can also use it as a random gate source for clocking things by using the DC coupled output -- the sky is the limit!

It is a very unorthodox VCO that is capable of generating very interesting timbres you have not heard before.

It differs in tonal characteristic from simply putting a white noise source through a low-pass filter, because a filter will actually round off the edges of the square waves generating the noise and therefore reduce the intensity of the sound. With vcNOIZ, the actual rate at which the noise is being generated is altered by voltage control, and thus, you get to keep the raunchy sounding sharp edges of the noise. In short: it sounds pretty cool :)

It will be available as a DIY project and complete module from the hexinverter.net online shop after this campaign ends, but I need your help to do a production run of these modules. I have done some number crunching and it just won't fit in anytime soon if I am to fund it entirely myself on a university student's very limited budget!

There are no microcontrollers used in this design, so it will fit right at home in any analogue purist's setup as well. It is comprised entirely of CMOS logic and analog opamps, so does not suffer from CV aliasing or any other issues present in a microcontroller-based design.

Features:

Inputs:

- Expo. response CV input (-V to +V)
- Linear response CV input (-V to +V) -- great for audio rate FM, as the audio demo shows. It sounds positively gruesome!
- Clock input (square wave, positive logic)

Controls:

- Pitch control (to tune base frequency, just like a VCO)

Outputs:

- Base frequency noise output (a little smoother sounding than the divisions) [audio coupled]
- Sub octave /4 output (gritty sounding) [audio coupled]
- Sub octave /8 output (gritty sounding) [audio coupled]
- Base frequency DC coupled gate output (for when wanting a random gate when using a slower clock/pitch rate)
- Internal clock output (there was an extra opamp, so I figured this could be useful)"

"This is a very nice analog Korg FK-1 with the FK-4 control pedal, very few signs of use. Very rare find.. Works nice with all kinds of sound sources like synths, guitar, organ etc. Quite different than the standard a Moog filter. This is early Korg and predates the MS20, MS10 range, I think it's from the same era as the 700, 770, 800DV etc. Great build quality. Everything works like it should and it is ready to play... I'll throw in a DIN/Midi cable to connect the pedal to the filter too."

Trogotronic 676 & Makenoize Rene - range of sounds.

Published on Nov 22, 2012 by DJjondent
"This is a reply to a number of requests regarding the sound of the Trog 676 valve oscillator.
Just tweaking its VCO to demo its audio range.

The Rene touch sequencer outputs two CVs (x & y axis).

Named after the French philosopher & mathematician René Descartes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHihkRwisbE

The lovely thing about it (apart from the touch aspect) is that it doesn't run in a straight line.
It uses a Cartesian coordinate system:
http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/Glossary?a=M&t=Cartesian+coordinate+system
I'm using just 2 clocks here,but it can take 4 clocks & 2 CVs.

Great for composing complex musical patterns."

Hammond Innovex Condor GSM Guitar Synthesizer Video

Published on Nov 17, 2012 by LemuriaAuxillary

"This is a demo of the Hammond Innovex Condor GSM, currently for sale at my site Phase II EFX (http://phaseiiefx.tumblr.com/#23518666868).

This demo is rather rough, unfortunately, as I used the camera mic for the sound in the effect demo. The higher quality sound in the first minute of the demo was recorded through my console into computer."

via this auction

"The Innovex Hammond Condor GSM is a rare bird, indeed, and this specimen, in particular, is beauty. The set includes the Innovex Hammond GSM effects unit, Condor hollowbody Guitar (manufactured by Ovation), original cable, case, manual, hangtags, and case slipcover. I have never seen another Condor as complete as this one.

A rather sophisticated octave divider (triggered by a special hex pickup) lies at the heart of the Condor GSM. The Condor guitar’s hex pickup connects to the Condor effects unit, allowing each string to trigger selected effects or settings that mimic other instruments. In essence, the Condor becomes a polyphonic effect, unlike a lot of similar effects units from the period, like the Maestro Soundsystem for Woodwinds, which uses monophonic triggering. With the polyphony of the Condor, you can get an incredible range of sublime octave dividing effects triggered by each individual string. A set of dials on the Condor effects unit allow the user to dial in the sensitivity/triggering for each string.

The effects are arranged in three color-coded categories: red—vibrato, tremolo, blue—bass, yellow-higher voices. Tabs mounted on the front activate an effect, while the sliders on the top of the unit give control over rate, and intensity, and bass volume/tone, and yellow voice volume/tone.

Effects include(from left to right):

red: repeat, tremolo/vibrato

blue: two string bass guitar, two string bass, bass guitar, string bass, bassoon, organ;

yellow: fuzz, mellow, horn, oboe, sitar, natural amplified, harpsichord, soprano.

The sounds conjured from the Condor are really quite incredible, in fact the condor can be run in stereo with blue effects (bass) to one side, and yellow effects to the other. This is useful for bass especially as you can send the blue voice to bass rig for massive sound. You can also select multiple settings at once for incredibly twisted combinations. The yellow voices are the most sublime, especially the sitar (rather convincing), and an unreal harpsichord sound that is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard.

The hex pickup on the Condor connects to the effects unit; however, the Condor guitar also has a regular 1/4 in. output, so you can have another set of effects or amp routing if you really want to get crazy, and I believe YOU DO!

The Condor guitar was in fact a rebranded Ovation Tornado, a 3/4 scale hollowbody, with bridge and neck pickups, in addition to the hex pickup used to control the GSM. Ovation electrics were incredibly well-built guitars, with fine detailing and unique designs. Check the specs on the Tornado.

The Condor is rumored to have been used by Jimi Hendrix, and it’s not hard to believe. The sonic possibilities, especially for this era, are unreal. I imagine the market would have been rather small for the expensive Condor GSM, relegating it to rich experimenters, session pros and studios. I have never seen another complete set for sale. This is truly a rare opportunity to own an esoteric guitar effect classic."
