Korg EX-800 with HAWK and AtomaHawk Upgrades

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"The original EX-800 had only a very basic MIDI implementation and also had somewhat limited sound modulating abilities. The HAWK and AtomaHawk kits bring so many new features including total MIDI control of every parameter. And the number of parameters is nearly doubled. There are four LFO's (2 LFO's and 2 SLFO's) instead of just one. The resonance, moog slayer and FM-800 mod's are part of the AtomaHawk upgrade. So you get all of those mod's and also the 12/24db per octave mod is included too. What really makes the difference is having those mod's under MIDI and patch memory control. Now you can use envelope generator 3 and any of the four LFO's to control the mod's. There is also MIDI velocity sensitivity, portamento and many, many more features including harmonic modulation. You also get 256 patch memory in 4 banks of 64. And all data is stored in flash ROM so you can forget about battery replacement and rest easy about battery leakage causing damage since you don't need an internal battery at all..."

Elektron Analog Four 2nd test - with Monotribe

Published on Dec 7, 2012 by darenager
"Second test, this time I tried syncing with the midi equipped Monotribe. The Monotribe is just doing the snare and hihat, the A4 is doing the kick and synth sounds, I tried to give a bit of a demo of the filters in the A4 by adjusting them on the various sounds. Again this is a first day demo so I am not fully au fait with the machine yet."

Just got hold of a Yamaha CS-50 and was blown away. Although several live videos await editing, and I usually don't do synth demo videos only, I couldn't help myself. Just playing this thing brings back a lot of memories...

Laurie Spiegel Featured on Pitchfork - Intro on NASA's Golden Disk

"The experimental pioneer's groundbreaking work with computers in the 70s and 80s helped lay the foundation for many of today's electronic noise makers.

Probably the most remarkable thing about Laurie Spiegel is that a piece of music she made could be the first sound of human origin to be heard by extraterrestrial lifeforms. If aliens exist, of course. And assuming they have ears.

Spiegel's computer realization of a composition conceived back in the early 17th Century by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler is the opening cut on the Golden Record, a disc that accompanied both Voyager probes on their journey across the solar system and out into the great interstellar beyond in 1977..."

Read the full article on Pitchfork here.  Note the EMLs to her right.  The track that is floating in outer space?  "Kepler's Harmony of the Worlds" performed on the Bell Labs "computer-analog hybrid" below.  Don't miss vintage footage of Laurie performing on the system in this post. The track "Kepler's Harmony of the Worlds" was featured on Spiegel's "The Expanding Unniverse" posted here back in October.   It was the second to last track.  It's fascinating to think the message sent on NASA's Voyager probes opens with a synth.

Elektron AnalogFour first test - Acid, drums, A4

Published on Dec 7, 2012 by darenager
"Quick first test demo of the new Elektron Analog4, I wanted to see what it was like for making drum sounds and also some acid, this was done within about 90 minutes of getting it, so by no means a thorough run through. I have not yet tested most of the features so that is why this is just a basic demo. There are more comprehensive demos from guys that have had them a bit longer so check those out for some of the advanced stuff. First impressions are that it is very well suited to making analog drum sounds, as per usual with Elektron gear you can radically change the sound on each step, so with just a couple of tracks you can make some nice drum patterns, I will be exploring this further in a future video, right now I'm back off to play with it :)"

"The Drone Establisher" Unique Oscillator (CAE Telegraph & Data Generator 8620)

"Comes with a Banana to Jack cable, so you can plug it into your desk/amp/whatever.

I warn you, this thing is DAMN HOT; and by that, I mean the output of this unit is a large amount of volts which may potentially damage your equipment. Start on mute, and very slowly turn it up, if you go full-bore into something, you might regret it. It's blown up a guitar distortion pedal before --- It's had a taste of letting the magic smoke out of components, and it's got the need to extract more.
A hint: use the left hand side pair of outputs, as these are much lower in voltage and current than the right hand side pair of outputs.

What does it do, I hear you ask???

Well, it's designed to send test signals down phone lines in various patterns to emulate a modem. You'll see on there, there's a whole bunch of olde school modem bauds on there.

See those 8 switches on the right? They're sweet. If you put it into that mode, you draw the outputting waveform in these switches. Kind of like Walsh tones if you've heard of those.

What does it sound like?????
It sounds like THIS sample I recorded live randomly going through the modes.

Awful and terrible, sacred and profane. This is an unfiltered sound. If you run it through some effects, a pedal pitch, and a reverb or delay, you can ger some amazing timbres from this."

"Before I start I would like to say that Walet is more of a Noise Machine than a Synthesizer because there isn't a keyboard, only a Pitch slider on the Left hand side of the screen. Above this slider you have 4 horizontal sliders one of which enables the iDevice to act as a gyroscope. On the other side of the screen there are 5 other sliders dedicated to the Touch Mode. It's best to watch the video demo... The Wablet is very well done, the generated sound is really great, the only things missing are record and sharing features but it is only the 1.0 version of The Wablet, so I hope that it will be on a future update... (Note that I would really love to have a real keyboard or a Midi Feature). A Super App with a beautiful UI!"

"It was completely serviced and refurbished in autumn 20012:

- All 6 Voice-Filter-ICs 80017A and all 3 Wave-Generator-ICs MC5534A were replaced by the perfect clones of AnalogueRenaissance.

- All 34 tactical switches on the front panel were replaced by new ones.

- All 16 faders on the frontp panel were replaced by new ones.

- New VOLUME potentiometer.

- New back-up batterie.

- All keyboard contacts were cleaned.

- The whole unit was cleaned and the front panel was polished.

- Calibrated to the specifications of the service manual.

- Loaded with the original Sound-Set.

This JUNO is technically in extreme good conditions and it is prepared to work for many years. With the new voice chips there is no risk for dead voices (which is a well-known problem) and there sound is at least as good as the sound of the original chips. Because of the service there is no worry about jumping voice parameters, bad keyboard action, non-function of switches, cranckling VOLUME pot... Just play and enjoy it!"

Plugging this in, I lost about 2 hours of my work day going through the sounds here. Everything from EVH's '1984' tone to vintage synth sounds to special effects were dialed in in seconds. "A unique swiss made 2 oscillator monosynth with very flexible LFO. CHEETAH MS6

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The MS6's sound engine has a classic two-oscillator structure, each oscillator (DCO, or Digitally Controlled Oscillator, in MS6-speak) offering square, triangle and sawtooth waveshapes, and the second oscillator also featuring a noise option. The DCOs both have coarse-tuning controls, and DCO B can be fine-tuned, too. DCO A may also be synced to DCO B for creating sharp sync basses and leads.
Pulse width is independently adjustable for each DCO, and can be modulated via a dedicated 'DCO PWM Rate' parameter. This means that you don't have to tie up the main LFO for pulse-width modulation, leaving that free for pitch or filter duties. Another nice touch is that the synth's envelopes can be used to control the mix between DCO A and B.

In all, I'd say the MS6's source section is versatile and varied. But its 24dB/octave low-pass filters, offering cutoff-frequency and resonance parameters, with LFO, envelopes, key follow and aftertouch selectable as modulation sources, are really something special, as befits an instrument with Curtis chips at its heart.

If the name Curtis rings a bell, it's because Curtis chips are also used in Oberheim synths, and Sequential instruments including the post-1980 Prophet 5s. The Curtis package used here is the CEM3396, essentially a synth-on-a-chip, as found in the Oberheim Matrix 6/6R and Matrix 1000. This replaces the independent Curtis VCO, VCF and EG chips, employed in more expensive polysynths, with a single chip, resulting in a much more cost-effective arrangement that still carries that trademark Curtis sound."

MC-202 + x0xb0x + MFB-522

Published on Dec 6, 2012 by idesignsound
Drums come in at 3:20.

"I bought this MC-202 from eBay a couple of days ago, and I am hooked already. Should have bought one years ago! A lot of people seem to think it's difficult to use the sequencer but after a couple of hours it's become second nature. You just need to slow down a little and think about what your doing and do a some math to make sure your lengths tally up.

I didn't buy this to emulate a TB-303 but it can easily be done. As long as you don't use any parameters that the 303 didn't have. So don't use sustain, use a fast attack, and a little release. You can use Env Amount, Decay, Filter, and Res as long as you don't move the sliders to the extremes. You can tie notes and add portamento to produce a similar slide effect.

The video is a bit long (as is this description LOL) but if you get as far as the last few minutes you'll here my x0xb0x coming in. They work together really nicely :-) The drums are from an MFB-522 (listening back they are a bit quiet)."
