Roland MKS80 & MPG80 Super Jupiter Tweaking

Published on Jul 3, 2017 Meta Function

"In this video, Meta Function demonstrate various synthesis techniques with a Roland MKS80 & MPG80 Super Jupiter.

Released in 1984 (the same year as the Juno 106), the MKS80 is an eight-voice rack polysynth with two voltage controlled oscillators per voice and MIDI functionality. Sharing a portion of its name with Roland's legendary Jupiter 8, the MKS80 architecture is actually more similar to the Jupiter 6. There are two incarnations of the MKS80 - one using the CEM3340 VCO integrated circuit architecture of the Jupiter 6 (known as Rev 4) the other with proprietary Roland voicing chips (known as Rev 5). Some people believe the Rev 4 sounds a bit darker and a little deeper in the low end. The one used in this video is a Rev 4 model. The MPG80 is a dedicated programmer module for the MKS80, which provides one knob per function - greatly opening up the synth's programmability. The MPG80 transmits any tweaks as SysEx data, allowing for the recording of parameter changes over MIDI to a DAW.

The MKS80 not only found a home with many 80s artists such as The Pet Shop Boys, OMD and Madonna (i.e. the bass line on 'Into The Groove'), but it also became popular with electronic musicians such as The Aphex Twin and Hardfloor. It's very easy to create fat, rich, warm intense sounds – almost with an analogue hoover like quality - similar to the ones used by Joey Beltram on his early pioneering work on the legendary R&S records in the early 90s. This beast can really rumble and squeak like a little piggy when the resonance is up high.

In this video the patch starts with Osc 1 set to a saw waveshape. The Osc Mix is flipped to Osc 2, which is set to a Pulse waveshape. PWM is applied to Osc 2 by the LFO and then by Env 1. The Osc mix is balanced between the two oscillators and Osc 1 is dropped by an octave with Osc 2 detuned slightly. The cutoff frequency is tweaked on the lowpass 24dB VCF filter (the same chip as the JP8) and various filter modulations are performed. The unit is placed in union mode and unison detuning and Glide are added. Finally the resonance is pushed (causing low frequency drop off ala MiniMoog) and the high pass filter (similar to the one on the Jupiter 6) has it’s cutoff frequency tweaked.

Audio recorded via Calrec S2 console and SSL convertors. All dry, no FX, EQ or compression. The only post production performed was normalization.

Sequenced via a Sequentix Cirklon.

Watch at 1080p with good quality audio monitoring for the best experience.

Meta Function developed the Max For Live synthesizer, the Wave Junction in partnership with Sonicstate.com. A four voice paraphonic synth with 2 multi-mode osc, three multi-mode filters, 5 LFOs, 5 Envs and a 12 slot modulation matrix.

You can buy it from Sonicstate right here for £19.95:

"The Roland MKS-50 Synthesizer Module is a 1U rack-mount version of the classic Roland Alpha Juno synth. It has the same synth engine and architecture, with some added features like 16 programmable chord memories, the ability to store velocity, volume, panning, de-tune, portamento and other similar parameters within each patch you create. The PG-300 gives you traditional slider type control of all editable tone parameters which include DCO (digitally controlled oscillators) LFO, bend, ENV, pulse, waveforms, noise, PW/PWM, high pass filter, VCF (filter) with freq/env/res/LFO/kybd, VCA envelope, chorus, and more. The PG-300 & MKS-50 are difficult to find and you will be hard pressed to find these two units presented as a package and in this condition. For a $50 minimum bid someone is going to get a fantastic deal on a classic synth & rare programmer!"

Mystic Circuits Warp Speak Demo

"I have a hand full of Circuit Bent Warp Speak Voice Changer Megaphones for sale. They feature the standard frequency shifting bend as well as control over the shifting by either an optical light sensor (which can be turned on and off) or a control voltage input with its own attenuator. I realize that in this video the CV input does not show a great example of the effect as this is because the SQ-1 an only generate 5V CV signals, the effect is much more noticeable with 10V CV signals such as what might come from your modular synth. Also there is a pair of feedback contacts and a 1/4" output. Unfortunately I only have 3 of these for sale, if you are interested in obtaining one please go through the contact form on my website www.mysticcircuits.com. Thank you earthlings!"

► Key range for chain-parameter
► VCA-MODE parameter "transparent" and "ballsy"

SYNTHBLOCKS: Mr. Hyde by Analogue Solutions

Published on Jul 2, 2017 rezfilter

"Mr Hyde is the first in a new series of ‘synthBlocks’. These are small table top effects processor, and later synthesisers and sequencers.

Designed by renowned UK synth designers Analogue Solutions who have over 24 years in the industry.

Mr Hyde is an analogue filter effects box use for subtle to extreme filtering and modulation effects.

SynthBlocks are used to process any sound that you feed into it from your DAW, Mixer or some musical instrument (with prior pre-amplification where necessary). To give your plug-ins some real analogue hardware life.

Mr Hyde has 1/4” input and output jacks on the rear, so it can be connector straight to a mixer or DAW audio interface without the need for adaptors.

On the top panel are mini jack sockets to patch with a semi-modular synth, such as AS’s very own Fusebox, or to Eurorack and other modular systems.

Mr Hyde can change the sound in subtle ways, such as nice sweeping filtering, right up to mangled FM mayhem!

Designed, engineered, and hand built in England.

Further synthBlocks are already in development including Dr. Strangelove, who will be with us soon!"

Three Willow Park - Raymond Scott Electronium Release

Three Willow Park Promo from Stan Warnow on Vimeo.

Promo from Reckless Night Music for Basta Music's new release of Raymond Scott electronic music:Three Willow Park--Electronic Music from Inner Space 1961-1971

A new release featuring Raymond Scott's work on the Electronium, available on multiple formats via Amazon, digital on iTunes, and currently sold out at Dusty Groove.

via Raymondscott.net, where you'll find the full post.

"Three Willow Park: Electronic Music from Inner Space, 1961–1971, now available from Basta, represents the second anthology of pioneering electronica by Raymond Scott. The album contains 61 previously unissued gems, many featuring hypnotic rhythm tracks played by Scott’s Electronium — an invention which composed and performed using programmed intelligence. Three Willow Park reveals that Scott was producing beat-oriented proto-techno before the 1970s explosion of electronic music and rhythms on the pop charts, a significant achievement that should not be overlooked."

Prophet 6 and ARP Omni synthesizers - A Lover's Concerto

Published on Jul 1, 2017 Tom Loncaric

"I recently did a gig with Barbara Harris of the Toys and still have this little melody on the mind. The 1965 hit song is based on a Minuet by Christian Petzold, and found in the Anna Magdalena Bach Book. Omni does the trumpet, and Prophet, with its mellower timbre, adds the complimentary trombone. The ARP Omni (made in about 1977) is a recent acquisition. The ARP's j-wires keep breaking, so a few notes don't work. That will be fixed shortly. In the meantime, the key of E major remains available, so that's why the piece is transposed."

Improvisation LXXVIII for Poly Evolver Keyboard

Improvisation LXXIX for Poly Evolver Keyboard

Update: part LXXIX added above. From the same session as below (Improvisation LXXVIII for Poly Evolver Keyboard).

"The pipe organ is deservedly called the 'king of instruments'. I was a working Church organist for twenty years, and I treasure every minute of it. My main musical influence, then, is the magnificent tone of the king of instruments, with its principals, couplers, reeds, mixtures, and 32' posaune in the pedals. When I returned to synthesizer a number of years ago, the love for this sort of massive musical sound was simply transferred to another instrument; which I would call the 'queen of instruments'.

It would be an interesting study to explore the reasons behind a person's need to musically express themselves to such dramatic forms levels, but I'll leave that to the shrinks and my wife.

Regardless, I have found that Dave Smith's synthesizers provide a similar musical potency in their ability to create a large, full, and dignified tone that definitely resembles a pipe organ, or even an orchestra. This is the sound I'm always after when I improvise or compose.

This piece of music is Evolver from top to bottom. A four-voice Poly Evolver Keyboard provides a reed-type sound for an occasional soft but bright melody. A second eight-voice Poly Evolver Keyboard offers the main patch with an envelope modulated filter and a slow VCA attack. The modulation wheel is set to open the cut off frequency, which reaches such a level at the top as to make it sound like a bright string patch, but it's far more. This provides for the fuller dynamics, which are further supported by an equally full bass pedal setting on the Evolver Desktop. As I play, the pedal programs have to be adjusted to suit the musical moment. In this piece, I used three different bass programs.

Why am I making one Evolver recording after another, and what happened to the Prophet '08's? Since all the excitement these days is over the just released DSI Prophet Rev2, I thought I'd back away and focus instead on the now forgotten Evolvers. They, too, are magnificent musical instruments. When the commercial hype settles down, then I'll return to the other instruments.

"Here is one perfectly working little Yamaha CS-01 Mark I in the rare black / gold / red colour scheme.

The CS-01 is an excellent analogue monosynth for leads and basslines, with all the filter, envelope, and modulation controls you would expect on a subtractive synth. It is a great tool for learning and explaining analogue subtractive synthesis too! I have even used it to make drum sounds, which I then recorded into a sampler.

It is in excellent condition, with no missing faders or buttons, just a few marks. See pictures. The only fault is a missing battery cover. I bought the synth this way, and I have gigged with it and the batteries have never fallen out, so I have not replaced it!

I do not have a mains power supply for this synth, because it's battery life is stellar. Over a year of regular use. Being analogue, low battery life will not make it suddenly switch off, it will just gradually get quieter and introduce a bit of distortion."

Plastic with no notable buttons.. but they hide a small hole that has a real (and replaceable) tact switch underneath (no broken membrane problems here).

I have been following The Daydream Sound on youtube for quite some time. His passion for Ensoniq gear, samplers and music creation is very addictive . Routing/Control
-----------------------
As you can see from the video, I did a lot of manual wiggling for this jam. But there’s a background of random modulation going on via massively multed and modulated slewed random.

Smooth voice: Tides in oscillator mode, Bi output. Shape, Slope, and Smoothness modulated by semi-random LFO from Peaks #1 channel 1, which is in turn modulated (via Veils) by multed 1U Random slewed output, attenuated via Quadratt. Envelope by Peaks #1 channel 1, with manual changes here and there. Lots of manual wiggling of the wave shape controls. V/oct driven by O+C in Quantermain mode. Output into 1hp Delay, then Verb, and on to mixers.

Various melodic bits: Rings in sympathetic strings mode, polyphony mode 1. Rings Brightness, Damping, Position modulated by multed slewed random from above (lots of Stackcable hopscotch going on!). Lots of wiggling of parameters including Structure. Output into Clouds in looping delay mode. Clouds triggered by /8 of RCD (“Spread” is on, so I guess it’s really /16?). Occasional wiggling of the regeneration/feedback control.

Rhythm: Tiptop ONE timed by RCD.

Background Drone: 4ms SMR in self-generating resonator mode, with Rotation and Spread modulated by multed Random output of 1U Intellijel Clock/Random, attenuated via Quadratt. Output mixed with rhythm track via Quadratt, on to 1U Digitank reverb, and final mix.

Sequencing/Timing
-----------------------
Everything timed by RCD getting its clock from the 1U Clock/Random module.

Audio recorded on a Zoom H2 using the mic input (the line input is busted). Managed to avoid distortion except at about 09:36. Bummer, but I think I actually distorted the Delay or Verb module, rather than the H2 being overloaded.
