gstormelecto XaVCF Oberheim OB-Xa Eurorack Filter Module

gstormelecto XaVCF Test Filter Circuit [Audio Only Demo]

Published on Feb 16, 2020 gstormelectro

"Audio and Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2020

I've been getting requests for demos of my upcoming XaVCF module.
It will be a eurorack adaptation of the OB-Xa filter.
More info at https://www.modulargrid.net/e/g-storm...
You know this sound from Rush Tom Sawyer and Van Halen's album 1984.
While we're all eagerly awaiting the module prototype I thought
I would share a brief sampling from a mini-lab test circuit.
A more thorough overview of the module will happen when it gets built.
So be on the lookout for that one in the near future.

The XaVCF will sound pretty far out.
We're talking about full on intergalactic blast off here.
Headphones recommended. BUT!...
Watch your levels, thick resonant sweeps ahead!
Prepare for ignition...

"The XaVCF is a faithful adaptation of the OB-Xa filter in Eurorack with added features.

As with the original, the XaVCF has two filter circuits to choose from! The heart of both designs having each its own Alfa reissue AS3320 chip. The XaVCF has the original Modes: a 4-Pole standard Lowpass circuit, and a 2-Pole Lowpass derived from a State-Variable circuit. Additionally there are 1-Pole Bandpass and Lowpass modes not available on the original!

Both filter circuits on the XaVCF not only have musical self-oscillating resonance w/ CV control, but the frequency cutoff can be tracked V/Oct using the CV2 input jack. In this way the XaVCF can be used as a sine wave oscillator. Unlike some older classic filter designs, the XaVCF retains a lot of low end at higher resonance.

The XaVCF is drenched in that fat and creamy wall of sound you’ll not soon forget. Are you ready for the Xa experience?

FEATURES
* Two selectable filter circuit configuration Types: Type I-SVF 2-Pole Lowpass, and Type II 4-Pole Lowpass.
* Additional Modes: Type I 1-Pole Bandpass, Type II 1-Pole Lowpass
* Two voltage controlled input jacks for Frequency CUTOFF w/ signal attenuators. CV1 is an extended range input capable of providing some boost to weaker control signals. The CV2 input will track V/Oct when its pot is fully CW.
* A voltage controlled input jack for RESONANCE w/ a signal attenuator CV3.
* Two audio signal input jacks w/ individual attenuators. Above midpoint, these inputs can overdrive the filter from most Eurorack oscillators and audio sources. This is especially useful in Bandpass Mode to compensate its weaker audio output signal.

KORG MONOTRON ANALOGUE RIBBON SYNTHESIZER

via this auction
"Analog on the go!
Analog synths were once massive, temperamental monsters; but no more! The true analog monotron fits in your pocket and is ready to play – anytime, anyplace. Although small enough to hold in one hand, the amazing monotron delivers ginormous and dazzling sounds. Best of all, it's a blast to play. The controls have been streamlined for ease of use. Concentrating on the most important sound parameters, the panel contains only five knobs and one switch. With this level of simplicity, now anyone can easily enjoy the world of analog synthesizers.

Product Highlights:
* Features the same classic analog filter found in the legendary Korg MS-10 & MS-20
* Filter any external source using the audio input jack
* Inspiring, easy-to-play ribbon keyboard
* Intuitive, fun-to-tweak controls
* Full-fledged, true analog synthesizer: VCO, VCF, LFO
* LFO can modulate either pitch of filter cutoff
* LFO Rate knob features cool LED visual indicator.
* Battery operation and palmtop size equals true portability
* Internal speaker/headphone jack lets you enjoy the sound anywhere – alone or with friends!

Ribbon controller keyboard offers easy expression
Borrowing the enjoyment of performing with a simple touch from Korg's wildly popular KAOSS products, the monotron's ribbon controller keyboard takes this ease of use even farther. Simple finger gestures can produce expressive effects such as vibrato and glide.

1VCO, 1VCF, 1LFO – Modular synthesis building blocks

The monotron's circuit is radically simple: one voltage-controlled oscillator, one voltage-controlled filter, and one low frequency oscillator. As a result, the process of sound creation is intuitive, and instantly understandable. And it's tons of fun. The monotron provides the joy of sonic creativity that's at the heart of analog synthesis.

The famous Korg filter
The monotron starts with the same highly acclaimed VCF circuit as KORG's classic MS-10 and original MS-20 semi modular synthesizers, and adds extra oomph to the resonance. Originally released over 30 years ago, these instruments are still coveted today for their aggressive, dynamic filters. The VCF Cutoff knob sets the frequency or tone of the filter; the VCF Peak (resonance) knob adds emphasis.

Semi modular satisfaction
Just as on the original MS-20, the monotron's filter can be "patched into," allowing any external audio source to be processed by the monotron's filter. The input jack (AUX input) built into the monotron's compact body inserts the AUX input into the signal path right before the VCF. This provides a great way to connect a KAOSSILATOR, a keyboard, a guitar, a digital audio player or even an un-mixed track to the monotron and enjoy tone-bending filter effects.

Versatile LFO provides audio – and visual – excitement!
The LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) can affect either the oscillator pitch or the filter cutoff. Both the speed and the intensity are individually adjustable, so you can create anything from a gentle vibrato to swooping tone changes of galactic proportions. As you turn the LFO Rate knob – featuring an embedded LED – the speed of the modulation effect and the speed of the blinking LED will change in tandem.

Listen anywhere – alone or with friends
The ultimate in compactness, the monotron includes a built-in miniature speaker. Along with the battery operation, this feature allows you to enjoy the monotron everywhere. There's also a headphone output that you can use when creating sounds at home, for recording, or for connecting to an amplifier or PA system."

BlindSide: The Audio Adventure Video Game

On KickStarter

"We’re creating a video game with no graphics, played entirely using audio. It is the first audio adventure of its kind, set in a fully 3D world that you’ll never see.

It's called BlindSide, and it’s one of the first games to bring a brand new gaming experience to sighted players, that can also be fully enjoyed by visually impaired gamers. So far we’ve completed 10 minutes of gameplay to prove out the technology, and demonstrate that our core mechanic is fun. There have been a handful of audio-only games, but nothing like this before.

Blue Lantern Modules Dwarf Star Synthesizer Semi Modular desktop analog synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Videos at the auction previously posted here.

"Let me introduce to you the Dwarf Star Synthesizer. A fully analog desktop synth. This is perfect for live performance, groovebox setups, and music production.
I revisited the idea of the all in one box. Many will remember I started my journey building a synthesizer called the 'nexus' many dwarf years ago.
I miss the experience of not having to patch and have a cable in the way for the most basic sessions. I especially miss the concept of the toggle switch.
I personally love melody and music production. That being said I designed this synthesizer for the professional who needs to finish those darn tracks!
The beginner is also at home with this synth. This is one of those boxes you will keep, even if it was your first.

What does this do?
This is an analog synthsizer that is plug and play. No need to buy or install into a

cabinet.

What do I need to play this with a keyboard?
The dwarf star synthesizer is fully analog. You need to own or purchase a Midi to CV
converter. The dwarf star synth uses the 1v/octave standard.

Can I use the Dwarf Star Synth with other Analog synthesizers?
Yes, it is compatible with all euro format modules.
The dwarf star's 3.5mm jack outputs are -5v/+5v swing. So if your synth can handle those
voltages it should work. The dwarf star synth is designed to handle at max 0-10v input
control voltages. Normal CV use is rated at 0-5v input.

Do I need to patch to get some audio going?
No patching is required to get audio going from the outputs. Knob positioning is required
however. I made a reference manual to get you started.

Is this the only one you will make?
The first run consists of 100 units. So if you need more, or you needed a replacement
unit, it will not be a problem.

How did you build the inside of the synth?
The internal construction is using the latest build technique similar to arduino header
stacking. There is a giant control pcb board, and individual 'cards' for each analog
section. So in other words there is not a bunch of wires connected to potentiometers.
The dwarf star uses star configuration for powering up the individual cards. I use 0.156"
power connectors, not ribbon cable.

I spent all this money and dam! The vco's modulate each other. I hate this! Do the vco's
bleed and influence each other when nothing is even patched up?
No, careful electrical engineering was performed by myself. +10 years experience was put
into the dwarf star synthesizer's vco section. Each analog card section for example is
using reference voltages for the control knobs. Other Blue Lantern tricks of the trade
are being applied to each section. The vco section is using a triangle core and special
sync circuit. The sync circuit is quite strong, so when not in use, the sync knob should
be at '0'. Very small vco change is noticible if the sync knobs are turned up but nothing
is connected. During testing, this only happened when the vco's where in ultra high
frequencies, close to fully clockwise. But I say again, all you have to do is have the
sync knob to zero when sync patching is not in use, and the vco's don't move.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The sections.

You get the following:

*Two Triangle Core VCO's using a discrete transistor array for triangle generation.
Bergfotron Advanced vco was the initial influence in the making of these vco's.

*Mixer section, with all basic waves mixable, no patching required. VCO 1 generates two
sub harmonic pulse frequencies. Will will not see this on any other analog desktop synth!
FAT SOUND.

*PPL VC NOISE GENERATOR. Remember the defender arcade game blast fx? Yup, you get this
inside. Large metal knob is your sweep to go from asteroids to white noise. You won't wee
this on any other analog desktop synth.

*Cool Audio v2164 Chip 12db Analog Filter. You get a superior quad vca based analog
filter. This particular filter is mixable so that you get lowpass, band pass, high pass,
notch, and all pass. I added the blue lantern touch and allow the user to select
capacitors for the filtering, you get 470pf and 120pf. You also get a diode limiter to
control extreme settings. Again, you will not see a filter like this on any current
desktop synth. The mixer section and filter go hand and hand. The mixer section will
saturate the filter if level knobs are close to fully clockwise. So you get an extreme
and soft soound pallete.

*Linear based Envelope Generators. You get two. These are analog, and have individual
loop lfo's for each. I added a timing capacitor switch to allow for short or long
envelopes. One envelope is hard wired to the filter, and the other is hard wired to twin,
stereo vca's.

*Cool Audio v2164 Chip twin VCA's. You get stereo output. Each vca gate knob is
individually controllable. There is a 3.5mm jack to patch up a rotor stereo effect. This
will allow a left, right, left, right panning effect for example. The output on the vca
section also contains a synth level to line level converter.

*VCLFO #1. This lfo is OTA LM13700 based and has a triangle core. The cv section has
exponential cv and a special linear cv section. The linear cv section is my pride and joy
circuit. It allows for arpeggio like cresendos when patched with another lfo.

*Skew LFO #2. This lfo does not have voltage control and is basic. It is similar to the
MS20 lfo in design. You get a triangle shaper with output, and pulse width output.

*Sample and Hold. This sample and hold uses the Skew LFO for the clock. You need to patch
something to the input jack and patch the output jack to something else to use it. So
this section is 'free floating'.

*Stereo 'Vintage' Sounding Delay. This is using twin PT2399 chips to simulate BBD chips
to make cool delay trails. Each control has CV inputs.

The 1/4" jack outputs are not balanced, they are Tip and Ring format (TR)."

Synthrotek Cosmic Echo Squared delay fx pedal demo video stompbox

Published on Feb 3, 2015 synthrotek

Watch your audio levels, some screeching feedback around 1:49 and possibly later.

http://www.synthrotek.com
Synthrotek on eBay

"The Cosmic Echo Squared is the Big Sister of the Cosmic Echo, now with momentary foot switches and expression pedal input!

Features:

- Dark, rich sounds with the analog vibe of a tape echo.

- Contains PT2399 IC, a bucket brigade style emulation. This IC has 16-bit sampling for 30-300 milliseconds. After that, the sample rate goes down in relation to the delay length. This results in artifacts and noise being introduced into the audio for weird, cosmic, psychedelic sounds. Use it like a typical echo or

- Delay length: 30ms-1,250ms.

- 4 knobs: Feedback, Mix, rate and Blast Amount. The Mix is a Wet only control that attenuates the amount of delayed signal in the signal chain. The Feedback controls the number of repeats in an organic-sounding way.

- Warp button. Momentary pushbutton switch that gives a bright, "small" speaker tone.

- Blast button. Momentary pushbutton switch that introduces feedback into the circuit momentarily. Great for adding rhythmic feedback and other strange sounds. The Blast amount can be adjusted by external pot!

- Pedal has a slight volume drop.

- Great for shoegaze, surf rock, ambient and experimental sounds.

- Takes a 9V battery or 9V center negative 2.1-2.5mm barrel Power Adapter (not included).

- Handmade in Portland, Oregon."

NAMM: PRESENTING THE METASONIX KV-100

"LET IT BLAST YOUR RECTUM CLEAN.

The Metasonix KV-100 is not called the "Assblaster" for nothing. We've
taken all of our knowledge of extreme vacuum-tube audio processing and
combined it into a single convenient, easy-to-use package.

Complete with disgusting and juvenile cartoon art by Dave Lovelace, of
Retarded Animal Babies fame.

The KV-100 contains the following:

--the basic preamp stage of our TM-7 Scrotum Smasher, driving:
--the waveshaping (pulser) and ring modulation functions of our TM-1,
minus the ring-modulator carrier oscillator, which then drives;
--a VCO derived from our TM-3 (it is NOT intended for use as a
synthesizer pitch source, only as a special effect for signal
degradation), leading to;
--an all-new wide-sweeping bandpass filter,
with envelope filter function;
--plus it has an envelope follower, which also makes a gate signal;
--and a noise gate on the output, which is always active and
is driven by said gate signal.

Plus relay-based true bypass for the main circuit, plus relay controlled
activation of the VCO and pulser. Controllable with manual switches or
optional external footswitches.

Only 8 knobs allow for vast ranges of distortion and effects, from
subtle to flaming-enema. It's for those filthy, nutsack-sucking
guitarists. Because they deserve, and love, flaming enemas.
Feel free to gnaw the crust off my taint, Tiny Worm Guitar Dude.

Specifications:
Audio input accepts unbalanced guitar, microphone or line signals.
Output 600 ohms unbalanced. 1/4" jacks for all I/O.
Extra inputs: carrier audio input for ring modulator, CV inputs for VCO
pitch and filter sweep.
Extra outputs: envelope CV out, VCO waveform out, pulser waveform out.
Frequency response: yes. Distortion: yee-haw. Filter sweep range: <100hz>12 kHz.
Enclosed in rugged, moisture-resistant ABS utility box with hinged lid,
carrying handle and latch.
Size with lid closed 12.25"x7.4"x6.5" (314mmx186mmx168mm), weight (minus
AC adapter) approx 2 lbs (1.4 kg).

The MAIN filtered chord stab/sequence is a chord coming from Mutable Instruments Braids, running through the Patching Panda Moon Phase Filter and then into the Erica Synths Acid Box III desktop filter, then into the Noise Engineering Desmodus Versio Reverb!

The Second Chord Stab is coming from the Qubit "Chords" module.

The ever-changing-magic-ride-cymbals are my own custom ride samples, loaded into a Tip Top audio "One" sample module - I can easily roll the pitch, and change ride samples in the fly with knobs.

After about 45minutes, I'm all warmed up and jamming my ass off! WOOT!!

This session was a blast!
I think this is the best I have ever done when starting from almost nothing and just GOING FOR IT!
I'm really learning how to work my system a lot better after watching TROVARSI last weekend!

0:00 Getting started and patching up
15:22 Starting to JAM with the session (still patching...)
37:06 Jamming, Dean-Style!"

Programming a Nave Sound in 120 seconds
Published on Jun 12, 2013

"This tutorial shows how to program a wavetable sound within a short amount of time."

"Waldorf advances wavetable synthesis to iPad with Nave

'Nave is wonderful — by far the most impressive iOS synthesizer I have laid my hands on to date.'

- Richard Devine, 2013 (electronic musician and sound designer)

BAD NEUENAHR, GERMANY: high-quality synthesizer developer Waldorf is proud to announce availability of Nave, its first synthesizer app for Apple’s all-conquering iPad, as of June 13...

Jointly created by Stefan Stenzel (audio algorithms), Rolf Wöhrmann (iOS development), and Axel Hartmann (graphic design), Nave transforms any iPad into an advanced wavetable synthesizer fit for truly mobile 21st Century composition, performance, and sound design!

Speaking of which, Nave comes complete with over 500 presets from highly acclaimed sound designers like Richard Devine, Sacha Dikiciyan (of Sonic Mayhem fame), Laurence Rapaccioli (Arksun), David Boldini (7 Skies), and Fletcher Kaufman (Sunsine Audio), amongst many others. All seriously showcase the depth and diversity of this impressive and inspirational iOS synthesizer — so much so, in fact, that Richard Devine was suitably moved to create no fewer than 95 presets alone, all of which are included for free!

For the benefit of those who want to indulge in some serious sound design of their own making, Nave does not disappoint. Its powerful sound engine includes two trailblazing wavetable-based oscillators, leaving all previous attempts at wavetable synthesis severely wanting. While the sound spectrum can cleverly be transposed independently of pitch, the waves can be rendered from perfectly periodic to very noisy and anywhere in between.

Nave’s clear-cut GUI invites both beginners and advanced users alike to experiment both sonically and musically while the hosting iPad’s generous display helps make wavetable creation and editing a blast! Besides integrated speech synthesis, wavetables can also be formed from analysing audio files. Furthermore, stretching, rotating, and shifting in the spectral domain allows wavetables to be refined or distorted in the fullscreen Wavetable Edit Mode. Here users can edit and fine-tune the wavetables using several 3D views that are as easy on the eye as they are to use. And in a reverential nod to Waldorf’s illustrious past and present, factory wavetables from the breakthrough Microwave, mighty Wave, and price barrier-breaking Blofeld synthesizers are all present and accounted for, complemented by an abundance of tasty new ones that make extensive use of those enhanced possibilities!

And if that’s not enough to get your creative juices flowing then Nave additionally includes a classic oscillator with an ultra useful selection of basic waveforms, plus a super-fat-sounding Ãœberwave function for beefing up sounds by up to eight individually detuned oscillators a la Waldorf’s recently released Rocket synthesizer. Nave is, indeed, truly a sound designer’s dream machine!

But, Waldorf being Waldorf, that’s not all: Nave’s flexible Filter section delivers that high-quality synthesizer sound recognisable right away by anyone at all familiar with Waldorf’s noteworthy name, and, as such, features LP (low-pass), BP (band-pass), and HP (high-pass) filter types with either 12 dB or 24 dB slope settings. Its neighbouring Drive section offers contrasting characteristics by being positioned Pre Filter or Post Filter or as a summing overdrive Pre EQ or Post EQ — perfect for those who prefer harsh and screaming sounds rather than delicate wavetable sweeps.

An extended modulation matrix and diverse realtime control functionality also awaits anyone wishing to animate any Nave sound in any desired direction. In addition to the classic virtual chromatic keyboard, Nave can be played with the Blades that allow for dynamic triggering of polyphonic modulation by simply sliding fingers in X and/or Y direction.

Yet more flexible fun is to be had on the FX & Arp page with pro-quality ModFX (Phaser, Flanger, Chorus), Delay, Reverb, parametric Equalizer, and a highly effective Compressor all adding to Nave’s sound and performance possibilities, as does a full-featured Arpeggiator. And last, but by no means least, the Tape & System page plays hosts to an old school, four-track recorder — replete with virtual tape spools. Use it to record complete compositions or simply sketch some musical ideas inspired by the superlative sounds of Nave!

So how does Nave naturally sound, then? Totally in a class by itself. Just like Waldorf! After all, the well-known Waldorf name has been synonymous with high-quality synthesizers for nigh on 25 years; indeed, its innovative position in the musical instrument marketplace dates back to 1989 with the release of the wavetable-based Microwave, an extraordinary reincarnation of the legendary PPG Wave series — arguably amongst the most coveted high-end synthesizers of the early Eighties. Time and technology stand still for no one, of course, and today Nave takes those heady heavyweight hardware developments of yesteryear — and a whole lot more besides — and serves them up to thankful iPad-adoptees at a fraction of the cost of its forebears.

Any adventurous musical iPad owners out there intrigued by the creative possibilities of wavetable synthesis surely owe it to themselves to check out Nave, the advanced wavetable synthesizer from Waldorf. Going for a song on Apple’s App Store, right here, right now!

iPad owners can purchase Nave directly from Apple’s App Store for a five-day special introductory price of €10.99 EUR/$11.99 USD. (Thereafter it will rise to €17.99 EUR/$19.99 USD.)"

BURG feat. I-Wei - Live @ Stockholm Syndrome 20141108 Pisco Bar KL // ADHD on Visuals

Published on Nov 27, 2014 ollilaboratories

"Alright, so here it is... the video from Stockholm Syndrome 03 party @ Pisco Bar / Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

Music by: BURG (live) with Special guest: Vocalist I-Wei
Visual treaments by ADHD // https://www.facebook.com/ADHDvisuals

So we managed to record half of the live set approximately, there was a major snafu where someone managed to push over the table where ADHD has his visuals computer situated.. since we used that for recording of the set it got interrupted after 55 mins appx.. so the last bit you hear is camera sound from one of the overheads.. we managed to get the audio recording back really late so we do not have uninterrupted audio for the entire set (not even with the cameras) ... so this is what you get! :)

Big thanks to I-wei, Stella Nutella (on the DJ decks and support) Nico at Pisco Bar and of course my partner in crime at ADHD for an awesome night !! I hope you can enjoy the set, we had a blast! :)

Note, we had some issues with the vocal audio / feedback etc, so its really muddy at times.. and I-wei did not have any monitoring systems - we have learned our lessons and will kit up properly / sorry for the feedback noises, i tried to DIP the volume to not kill your ears during the feedback howls.

LIVE GEAR used:

Roland TR-8, System-1, KORG volca BASSx2, Keys, Kaoss PAD KP3+, Elektron Analog Four, mx400 mixer, Jomox T-resonator, ibanez es-2 + strymon time line as vocal looper

Podcast 273: Dan Goldstein (Cherry Audio)

Published on Apr 21, 2019 20Objects

"Dan Goldstein has been living his dream for 20 years. He started off with Sonic Foundry - back in the golden days - creating the future of audio software from scratch. He went on to be a main developer of Mixcraft, and has recently been involved in the release of Cherry Audio's Voltage Modular synth software. It's a powerhouse, and you can tell that Dan is really excited about it.

We took the opportunity to roll through some of his history, and I learned a lot about Sonic Foundry's world. But I also got a chance to see the trajectory of a guy - in Dan - that knew what he loved, and spent a lot of effort pursuing it. You hear it in his voice; despite the fact that he's been doing it for 20 years, he sounds as excited as a teen with his first car.

It was cool to talk to Dan about history, but also about his current work on Voltage Modular. If you are interested in playing around with a new kind of virtual modular, you should check it out - it's breaking some new ground, and is a blast to play with. You can check it out at https://cherryaudio.com/

Enjoy!"

What the Earth Sounds Like in Space - Gumby on the Moon!

Sounds of Space: 'Chorus' radio waves within Earth's magnetosphere

Sinewave filter sweeps! Gumby got it right:

Gumby on the Moon

Description for the top video ( Sounds of Space: 'Chorus' radio waves within Earth's magnetosphere):
"The audio 'Chorus' in this video was recorded on Sept. 5, 2012, by RBSP's Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science (EMFISIS).

via http://www.captaincynic.com/thread/94889/sounds-of-space-chorus-radio-waves-within-earth-s-magnetosphere.htm
"'Chorus', also known as 'dawn chorus', are naturally occurring electromagnetic radio wave/s emitted from the Earth’s magnetosphere that are audible by the human ear. These radio waves are caused by particles within Earth's magnetosphere. A magnetosphere is the region surrounding a planet that is dominated by the planet's magnetic field. Solar winds (charged particles coming out of the Sun) blast against against Earth's magnetosphere, causing it to be shaped the way it is.

The sounds in the video below were recorded recently on Sept. 5, 2012 and the sounds were picked up using radio receivers. This video has numerous 5 second recordings of 'chorus' sounds played one after another without any gaps in between.

The chorus phenomena has been known about for decades. The reason they are sometimes referred to as 'dawn chorus' is because often the sounds are more easily picked up in the morning. A similar occurence is the auroral chorus - which can occur during auroras - caused by geomagnetic storms.

All these sounds basically seem to arise out of the interaction of solar winds with our magnetosphere.

The visualization accompaniying the audio in the video depicts magnetic field lines which which represent the magnetosphere (magnetic field) surrounding Earth."

New Elka Synthex 2 Digital Desktop Synth From Mario Maggi in the Works

This one is in via swissdoc and indirectly via Florian Anwander on the AH email list. This is not the new analog Elka Synthex clone from the new Finnish Generalmusic. This is however from the creator of the original Elka Synthex, Mario Maggi, and it is all digital. An interesting side note mentioned below is that Mario Maggi owns the Synthex name. Not sure what impact if any this might have on the upcoming Generalmusic Elka Synthex remake.

An Update: via swissdoc. It appears a filing for the name SYNTHEX was made on April 29, just three days ago. The filing is under category 15 which covers: "Electronic musical instruments; Electronic synthesizers; Electronic musical apparatus and instruments; Electric and electronic musical instruments; Mechanical, electric and electronic musical instruments; Electronic apparatus for synthesising music [musical instrument]."

"Hello to everyone,

my name is Enrico Cosimi, I'm the author of the text on ACM concerning the Synthex 2. I have been in touch, here in Rome/Italy, with Mario from the late Eigthies and, from the mid Nineties, I'm working with Mario on his "version two"; as you can imagine, Mario is a very very very busy kind of genius, who conceived and realized a lot of third party non-musical items (especially for telecommunications and health). I am not allowed to reveal all the data concerning the new Synthex 2 (b.t.w., it will be a digital equipment: would you dare to conceive an analog instrument with 128 LFOs and 64 EGs in the same box?), but - trust me - when it will be done, it will be a GREAT machine.

Moog Sub Phatty: New Machine For Living

Published on Jan 21, 2013 MoogMusicInc·222 videos

"In honor of the new Moog Sub Phatty analog synthesizer's release today, experimental multi-genre music producer, Flying Lotus, and Adult Swim veteran, Adam 'Lilfuchs' Fuchs collaborated on a short animation called Moog Sub Phatty: New Machine For Living. You can hear the new Sub Phatty analog synthesizer in Flying Lotus's original score for the animation."

"New Moog Sub Phatty Synthesizer Sets New Standard for Analog Sound Design

ASHEVILLE, NC – January 21, 2013 – Moog Music is proud to introduce the Sub Phatty analog synthesizer, a 25 full-size key, 31 knob production instrument that melds the soul and functionality of vintage analog synthesizers with new and unique sound design tools. Building on the tradition of Moog’s highly successful Phatty family, the Sub Phatty grinds and screams with a uniquely aggressive voice — making it the new standard for synth bass, analog percussion, and a wide range of sound design applications.

The engineers at Moog Music have reimagined the Sub Phatty’s sound engine. The instrument features two variable waveshape oscillators that perform with extreme clarity and accuracy while requiring almost no warm-up time. Users can simply power up, dial in settings, and put their fingers to work on the keys to summon crisp and detailed waveforms with vibrant sound that brims with high-frequency harmonic content, yet stays true to the rich sonic density that has become synonymous with Moog synthesizers.

“We set out to design the grittiest Moog synth ever, one that still offers all of the great sound and flexibility that Moog synthesizers are known for, but that also really has teeth,” said Mike Adams, President of Moog Music. “One of the great advantages of the Sub Phatty is its ability to conjure aggressive sounds that cut through a dance mix, stand out on-stage, or burn up the studio. We think that everyone from producers and sound designers to DJs and synthesists will have a blast using it.”

The Sub Phatty’s filter includes the transformative new Multidrive circuit, a unique combination of OTA distortion and FET drive, which serves as the sparkplug in the instrument’s powerful sound. At low settings, Multidrive adds warmth and width; when pushed, it delivers a screaming snarl that is highly reactive to resonance, waveshape, and oscillator level.

Users can access a total of 16 definable presets via the 4x4 preset matrix on the Sub Phatty’s front panel. This matrix also doubles as a control panel for the instrument’s subcutaneous nerve center — users can select filter poles, set pitch bend amounts, toggle between legato glide modes, and more. These functions can also be accessed via the included Sub Phatty standalone/plugin editor.

The configuration of the Sub Phatty’s mixer section allows users to easily determine, at any given moment, which sources overdrive the filter and which simply pass through it. The mixer section further hosts controls for a square wave sub oscillator; those operating the Sub Phatty can utilize this tool as a third oscillator for added depth, or to craft their own customized incarnations of monstrous Moog bass. Also in the mixer section is a noise generator voiced to deliver rich, punchy low-frequency content, designed for analog percussion and sound effects.

In honor of the Sub Phatty’s release, experimental multi-genre music producer, Flying Lotus, and Adult Swim veteran, Adam Fuchs collaborated on a psychedelic short animation called Moog Sub Phatty: New Machine For Living. Flying Lotus’s original score was made primarily with the Sub Phatty synthesizer and dynamically shows off its bold sound. This unique animation can be viewed on Moog’s website at www.moogmusic.com/animation.
The Sub Phatty brings a fearless new voice to the Moog family of synthesizers. With its streamlined interface and dynamic sound design flexibility, this new synth fuses an unparalleled connection between human & machine, opening the door to unprecedented sonic exploration.
