Small Systems Patches #1 - Drone, Delay & Feedback

video by Abstract Data

"The first, in what will hopefully be, an ongoing series of jams based around small modular systems. This drone, delay and feedback patch takes three different waveform outputs from a single VCO and feeds them into a combination of filters and wave folders. These signals are mixed together and then split into two separate channels where one is the output signal and the other is used as a feedback path running via delay and reverb and then fed back into the mix. These modules are then modulated using combinations of LFO and looped S&H.

You can check out the rig for this patch here: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/v...

Modules used (from L to R): Abstract Data ADE-32 Octocontoller; ADE-33 Event Boss; ADE-60 4:4 Mix Utility; ADE-50 3x VCA; / Intellijel Dixie II; uFold; uVCF; / Audio Damage Dub Jr MK2; / 2HP Verb; / Doepfer A-18-2 Multiple.

Case: 4MS 64X Pod; / Sequencer: Arturia BeatStep Pro; / Additional delay and reverb from Source Audio Collider.

Patch was recorded to a Tascam DR-05 recorder and mixed in Logic Pro X."

John L Rice: MOTS At Lusio, A Night To Awaken

Published on Aug 31, 2019 John L Rice

"As per my usual, I didn't have any idea of what I was going to perform until the day before the performance, but for what it's worth, here it is! ;-) I had fun none the less and a big thank you to Mollie, Bradley, Chris, Philip, Justin, James, Kevin, everyone else who helped out, all the other great performers , and big hugs to the wonderful members of the audience!

If you want to know more about MOTS (Modular On The Spot) and Modular Nights shows, to either be part of the audience or to perform yourself, contact Modular Seattle:
https://www.modularseattle.com/

Learn more about Lusio here: https://www.lusiolight.com/

As per the MOTS tradition, I only used a modular synthesizer, you can get a good look at it at 2:35. I had three stereo patches on the modular, a sequenced background and then two different lead voices I controlled with an Arturia KeyStep keyboard and Mutable Instruments Yarns MIDI to CV/Gate module:

1) The background patch was the most complex, it was a four voice shift registered sequence featuring an Erica Synths Black Clock, a Division6 SQ816 sequencer, a VPME T43 precision adder, a Synth Tech E102 shift register, an Instruo Quad Performance Quantizer with micro keyboard, 4 Synth Tech E330 VCOs, a Modcan Quad LFO, a 2hp clock divider/multiplier, a Doepfer quad envelop generator, a Xaoc Devices stereo mixer, and a Strymon Engineering Magneto delay/reverb.

2) The rich fat typical synth voice was a Modcan Triple VCO into a Synth Tech E440 low pass filter along with an Erica Synths EG and VCA for voicing and an Audio Damage reverb module and then finally to a Circuit Abbey mixer.

3) The plucky voice was simply a Mutable Instruments Rings into Clouds and then to a second Circuit Abbey mixer. I had the patch set up in stereo where the output switched sides every time I played a note but unfortunately there was a problem with one of the cables so only every other note was heard! Whoopsie! ;-)"

Ornament and Crime chords: a spring depression

Published on Apr 17, 2018 NONsynth

Let this one develop.

"Finally got around to testing out the Harrington 1200 mode on the Ornament and Crime, using the Audio damage Sequencer 1 to conjure up some minor chordal goodness. Patch notes below:

Bass voice is Rings with an envelope on the brightness to get more of a bass guitar sound - into Sputnik 4-tap for a bit of ping pong because I can't resist.

The Sequencer 1 sends pitch and gate to the o_C in Harrington 1200 mode. The CV1 and CV2 channels are used to control chord inversions and octave switching. The Accent trigger out is sent to some weird switching input for the Tonnetz whatchamacallit transformations. The four pitch outs go from the o_C to the Roland System 500 512 oscillators and the two Shapeshifter oscillators, all into the System 500 530 VCA to the 521 VCF to the Audio Damage Dimensions chorus to a Disting stereo reverb and out.

The whole patch goes through the Boss RV-6 reverb and I threw some drums on in Reaper for good measure."

A Tale of Two Filters: Intellijel Polaris & Omsonic RNF

Published on Dec 9, 2017 ngarjuna

"A Tale Of Two Filters
Two Cascaded OTA filters in the Eurorack format compared side by side in Low Pass mode:
Intellijel Polaris
and
Omsonic RNF

00:00 - 02:02 Open sweeps, high resonance
02:02 - 04:05 Rhythmic pattern sweeps, very wet
04:05 - 06:08 Pattern
06:08 - 08:11 Pattern +1 Oct

Patch Notes:
Audio Damage Sequencer One driving
single sawtooth from Intellijel Rubicon
Into each VCF both enveloped by Maths SUM (ch1 ACC ch4 GATE)
and modulated by AD SeqOne LFO (SIN & SAW @ 256 steps)
4-pole out to uVCA enveloped by Dual ADSR

Open sweeps are the same patch with the gates silent and the VCA bias cranked up

No effects

As each module features on-board attenuators for everything I did my best to match scaling and offset between the two filters. I also spent some time comparing input drive (COTA filters seem to be very sensitive to input levels).

On the open sweeps I was unable to get the resonance on the Omsonic to the full screech I wanted so I feedback patched some of the 2-pole into Input B and seasoned to taste"

Audio Damage Releases Pumphouse for iOS

Audio Damage Pumphouse Overview

Audio Damage, Inc.
Published on Aug 15, 2017

iTunes: Pumphouse - Audio Damage, Inc.

"What do you do when you need the sidechain pumping effect in an iOS DAW that doesn't have sidechaining? Pumphouse to the rescue!

Pumphouse is a simple and excellent compressor (taken straight from our RoughRider 2 codebase) coupled with a step sequencer driving an envelope generator. In this manner, you can sidechain-compress your pads or bassline against a 1-measure pattern, no other inputs required.

With an easy-to-understand interface, Pumphouse is a quick method for getting That Sound.

Pumphouse requires transport information to work. Please note that some iOS AUv3 hosts do not have a transport. (At this time, Auria Pro that we're aware of.) There is an Inter-App Audio version supplied, but it also requires transport info.

We have tested and approve the AUv3 with AudioBus 3, Cubasis, GarageBand, AUM, ModStep, Zmors Modular, and Beatmaker 3."

Patch Notes:
Combination of new and old: the bass, WC Plucks and SMR patches are all from February. Everything else is from more recently.

Mumbles & Wicked Refrain Patch
The main patch's Motomouth modulation is from a series of S&H CVs from the Abstract Data Octocontroller; I scanned around until I found something I liked then grabbed some bars then scanned around to something else
Audio Damage Sequencer 1 providing PITCH and SNAP gates (ACCENT) to Intellijel Rubicon
SAW and PULSE with small amount of PWM modulation from an Octocontroller LFO to STG .MIX to the Limaflo Motomouth
Out to Intellijel uVCA enveloped by Intellijel Dual ADSR

WC Plucks
Stereo patch

SMR Melodic
2 Octocontroller loops going into L and R respectively
Octocontroller S&H controlling the ROTATE CV

I don't have patch notes or video but there are two other SMR patches: one which produces kind of a pitchless, funky bouncy kind of sound; another which is a more percussive, almost glasslike kind of sound

You can hear the more subtle modular parts when the Avalon and Motomouth and drums all drop out around 6:33

Q: Wow it has been a while since your last video, where have you been?
A: Computer troubles and more computer troubles. All that behind us we return to bringing you funky videos.

Q: Why are these patch notes so sketchy?
A: A lot of this stuff was recorded 'before the crash' and some of those patch descriptions got lost. We did our best from memory (I didn't have much video from those patches either) but they may or may not be super accurate.

Q: What's next from ngarjuna?
A: Look for a new album in the late summer/early fall from Acid Coast Records. And of course more videos.

Ströme live beim PULS Festival 2016 (Full Concert) & Live at Superbooth 2017

Published on Dec 6, 2016 PULS Musik

"Alle Fotos und Videos vom PULS Festival: http://www.deinpuls.de/festival"

via Florian Anwander:

"Two guys from Munich, Germany do live music with two big modular systems. The group is called 'Ströme' which is german for "electric currents". They are professional musicians. They played bass and drums for several years in the very successful bavarian band "La Brass Banda". The left one is Mario Schönhuber, the (former) bass player. He is doing most of the sequences and chords. The guy at the right system is Tobias Weber (drummer at La Brass Banda), he is doing all drums and percussive stuff.

Tobias uses in the first video the Doepfer A-157 for the drum programming, but changed now to a Tiptop Audio Circadian Rhythm (can be seen in the Berlin video).

Marios uses a combination of Audio Damage Sequencer 1, Stillson Hammer, Intellijel Metropolis, and Make Noise Tempi for his bass sequences. In the first video he is using still a Roland JD-Xi for the chords, but recently he changed over to a Audio Damage Sequencer 1 which controls for Doepfer A-111-3 plus monophonic filter and vca (you may spot it in the Berlin video in the most upper row).

Enjoy it."

Erica Synths Fusion Delay / Flanger / Vintage Ensemble

Published on Mar 14, 2017 Perfect Circuit Audio

"Running a bass synth sound through the Erica Synths Fusion Delay / Flanger / Vintage Ensemble. Audio Damage Sequencer 1 sequencing a bass sound made with the Roland 512 dual oscillator through the 521 VCF with envelopes and LFO from the Befaco Rampage. Using both the short and long delay chips and the built in LFO for chorus and vibrato modulation.

The Fusion Delay / Flanger / Vintage Ensemble is a tube delay with tons of character. It uses two BBD chips, one at 1024 and the other 4096 stages for short flange effects and longer delays. The tube is present to provide some overdrive in the delay output and the routed feeback for extra thickness.

Sequencing the Spectral Multiband Resonator

Published on Oct 4, 2016

There's a detailed video walkthrough of the SMR patches.

"Patch Notes
Acid Patch
I had a standard modular acid patch (Rubi - VCF303 - uVCA) but it lost the A-B comparison to Audiorealism ABL3 (the modular variant sounded equally good but with my CV input on the fritz I wasn't able to modulate the cutoff as wildly). I left the modular patch in the video, however, as videos of the computer screen look less interesting.
So the acid patch is ABL3 basically unprocessed.

SMR 1
Audio Damage Sequencer 1 is hitting the input of the SMR
Rotate controlled by CV3 sequence
There's a div/8 PEG envelope modulating resonance

SMR 2
Variation on the first SMR patch but with 2 gate sequences and a steady clock being applied to the level CV inputs on the SMR

Arpeggios
Rene driving STO, 2 sequences that I'm manually shifting between (the first is 4 bars, the second is 2 bars)
STO Vari Out into Timbre Shape modulated by Wogglebug Smooth CV and linear FM'd by Sputnik VCO 2 (also tracking pitch)
Sequencer 1 slow LFO modulating Timbre
Into the Optomix enveloped by Maths Fall modulated by Wogglebug Stepped Out (Woggle clocked at 16th notes)
Delays in AD Dubstation

West Coast Bass
Sequencer 1 driving pitch, gate, accent
STO receiving pitch deeply linear FM'ing itself from Sub Out (required tuning adjustments) Vari Out into Optomix
Maths channel 1 for main envelope, channel 4 for accent envelope
Sum Out enveloping Optomix

Bloops
Sputnik 1 set to a lower pitch receiving pitch from Seq1
Exp in set to inverted max receiving LFO from Seq1
FM In receiving another LFO from Seq1
Sputnik 2 set to a higher pitch also receiving pitch CV from Seq1
Maths envelope to inverted Exp In
FM In receiving from Sputnik 1
Sine Out into the Optomix being enveloped by Maths Both modulated by Wogglebug Stepped

"Tested, everything works flawlessly except for a few issues -The VCO, VCF, Arpeggiator / Sequencer, LFO, Noise, bender, etc. are all great. There is a tiny bit of scratchiness in the Resonance slider for the filter but that's it.

The envelope section does not seem to work, the sliders most likely need to be replaced. The 101 will still make sound when switched to 'Gate' in the VCA section, but this bypasses the envelope. I cleaned the internals thoroughly, and there was no cosmetic sign of damage to the envelope section, so this is why I suspect the sliders.

Someone before me must have tried to clean the face of this with some kind of solvent or something - All of the screen printed labels are missing without a trace. Refer to pics.

Also, someone previously tried to change the CV/Gate output and input jacks from 1/8" to 1/4." They didn't finish, as the CV input jack is missing. The gate input jack does work. The CV/Gate outputs do not seem to work correctly (tested with other gear that I know could interface, etc.)

Seems like they also tried to start some kind of modification, with another jack next to a switch installed to the left of the other jacks. They are not connected to anything internally, I don't know what their intention was.

The main audio out, headphone out, Hold input, and External Clock (for Sequencer, Arpeggiator & Sample and Hold Clock) inputs all work perfectly."
