Technos Acxel Resynthesizer

"Only 39 Axcels [sic] were ever made - and those who own an Acxel (ACoustic + X + ELement) hold on to them - proved by the fact that it is very, very rare that an Acxel is for sale. The last, and probably the only, time an Acxel was offered on Ebay were 2003. If I remember correctly, the starting bid was USD10,000 that time.

Imagine drawing waveforms, 128-stage envelopes, base pitches and amplitudes (the user interface allows editing of 32 base pitches/amplitudes at the same time, like an 32 track pitch and audio mixer, with a discreet “page” for each group of 32 oscillators, or ISC’s – Intelligent Synthesis Cells, as they are called in the Technos terminology), and other sound parameters with your finger - and have 256 intelligent, digital oscillators follow your every creative move in real-time. Imagine creating a monophonic sound with 256 oscillators, 8 multitibral voices with 32 oscillators each or any combination in sections of 32 oscillators.

Burbank, CA - August 4, 2015 - Spectrasonics has released Omnisphere 2.1 with a streamlined 'Sharing' feature for sharing user sounds and a new Library Publishing capability. Version 2.1 is an update to the company's recent v2 upgrade of its flagship software synth. In May, Omnisphere Version 2.0 was released with vastly expanded new synthesis and creative capabilities for sound design, along with significant user interface innovations, and thousands of new sounds. Sharing sounds is simplified in Omnisphere 2.1, the end-user can simply shift-click on a few Patches or a few Multi-patches and then save them to be transferred to a friend or musical collaborator who also has Omnisphere 2. Sharing patches automatically includes any user audio, which is especially convenient with custom patches. Sharing multiple types of Patches, Multis and user audio all at once is easier too, with Project sharing; the end-user can just collect a set of sounds in a project, and then share the project.

The new "Publish Library" feature in v2.1 was created for third-party developers of Omnisphere libraries. It allows developers to easily export, or "publish" a library of Multis and Patches, along with any associated user-created Soundsources, as well as graphic images for the custom library in a single .omnisphere file format. End-users can then easily install this package into their systems with a single step.

"I wanted to try something different for this Megapack. I love to play guitar, equally as much as piano and synths. I own quite a few guitar pedals that add analog synth flavor, via oscillators and filters. This seemed to be a perfect fit for an Ableton Instrument pack. The Samples don't exactly sound like guitars, they don't exactly sound like synths either. This leads to a pack that has a different flavor than my other releases. The first 24 presets are more straightforward. They showcase the samples with some modulation options. Presets 25-36 are more atmospheric and have effects added, to give them an otherworldly feeling. I had a ton of fun creating these 36 presets, and I'm proud of how this pack came out. I hope you enjoy it!"

"Analog synthesizer circuit that shatters expectations for its class

Four-voice polyphonic analog synthesis. The analog synthesizer circuit of the minilogue, whose genuine analog sound had a huge impact on the synth world, has been further developed for the minilogue xd.

Voice structure of minilogue xd is 2VCO + MULTI ENGINE, 1VCF, 2EG, 1VCA, and 1LFO. In addition to the distinctive circuits found in the series, such as wave shaping to shape the overtones of the oscillator and a sync/ring switch, there's also cross modulation, a sharp two-pole filter, and a drive switch that adds thickness and drives signal into minilogue xd’s filter. Arturia announces the Synclavier V

"Arturia announces the Synclavier V, the first recreation of the legendary digital synthesizer made in collaboration with Cameron Jones, the inventor of the original instrument.

The Synclavier V faithfully recreates the elite digital synthesizer/workstation that started it all, powering some of the biggest hits and film soundtracks of the early ‘80s with its unique rich, edgy sounds.

While the Synclavier V expertly brings this historic instrument to life, we’ve improved it dramatically by taking advantage of today’s processing power. We’ve also infused into it everything we’ve learned over 16 years of developing award-winning software synthesizers. The result is a thoroughly modern, cutting-edge instrument that stands alone among hardware and software synths alike.

Update: some details on the synth engine:

Timbres consist of up to 12 Partial Timbres
Much of the magic of the original Synclavier owed to the ability to build Timbres (presets) by creating and layering four completely different sounds or Partial Timbres to realize massive, complex sounds. With the Synclavier V, we’ve taken the number of Partial Timbres to 12, dramatically expanding the creative possibilities. Since each Partial Timbre is a complete sound, that means that you can stack many different sonic elements into electrifying Timbres resounding with rich complex textures brimming with subtleties.

Partial Timbres are each compete synth engines
Each of the 12 Partial Timbres has two digital oscillators that combine the principles of both additive and frequency modulation (FM) synthesis. Rather than using filters to subtract harmonics from simple oscillators, additive synthesis builds up complex sounds by selectively adding harmonics in this case. The Synclavier V goes way beyond that, combining these oscillators in an FM architecture where the carrier (main) oscillator is modulated by the second harmonic oscillator. The fusion of additive and FM technologies make for a stunningly diverse and unique universe of cinematic pads, epic leads, evolving bass lines and more.

Time Slices animate long passages
Time Slices allow you to specify up to 50 snapshots of the 12 Partial Timbres of additive and FM synthesis goodness, and animate through them over time. For each Time Slice, you can set the volume, pitch, FM modulation amount, and delay. The ability to set parameter crossfades of up to 30 seconds between Time Slices—over a total time of 5 minutes—makes it possible to create long evolving ambient pads and cinematic cues of incredible complexity.

Improvements make a great instrument even greater
We’ve made a lot more improvements beyond boosting the sound engine from four Partial Timbres to 12. Where the original modulation oscillator was only a sine wave, now you can also choose sawtooth, square, or triangle—or graphically build your own waves comprised of 24 phase-controllable harmonics. These enhancements allow you to create outrageous textures never possible before. Each Time Slice can now even have a separate FM modulator waveform. Variable bit depth between 4- and 24-bits, on-board effects, and a MIDI Learn feature are just some of the many examples of the new options available to you in Synclavier V.

With the Synclavier V, digital synthesis meets total creative and performance expression.
Sure, all synths have LFOs, but the vibrato section of the Synclavier V is exhaustive, giving you control over LFO attack, phase, quantizing, bias and more. Things get even more interesting when you apply the LFO to the FM harmonic oscillator that, in turn, modulates the carrier. Let that sink in for a minute!

Want to take your listeners on an animated journey? Add extra energy to your pads and soundscapes with the stereo modulation section. It actually takes the form of separate linkable tremolos for each channel, making for unique spatial animation effects that will have everybody’s heads spinning.

Imagine performing with expressive nuances never possible before. Press harder on the keyboard to change the amount of FM modulation. Ride the expression pedal to affect the frame speed of your Time Slices. Grab the mod wheel to rock the FM modulation ratio. These are just some examples of what’s possible when you use the modulation matrix to easily map any of your favorite MIDI controllers to dozens of sound engine parameters—discretely for each Partial Timbre."

B-3 V realistically recreates the special sound of the B-3 tonewheel organ. One of the most iconic and influential instruments of all time. One which has graced many of the greatest recordings of all time. Keyboard players have made their mark in all forms of popular music with the B-3, back from its inception in the Fifties way past its discontinuation through to today. Procol Harum’s hit ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’ proved particularly memorable with a melancholic countermelody displaying an altogether softer side to the B-3. But raucousness remains the order of the day for the blues, jazz, and gospel genres with which it first found favour. After all, it had historically been aimed at churches as a more compact and affordable alternative to conventional pipe organs.

One saying springs to mind: Pulling out all the stops — to hold back nothing — is an allusion to organ stops being pulled out to turn on each set of sounds in a pipe organ. The B-3 effectively ‘emulates’ this with its drawbars. Doing this and a whole lot more is what B-3 V does best, thanks to Arturia pulling out all the software stops to make it happen!

Thirties-developed tonewheel technology originally made that special sound happen. An electronic current is created when rotating a metal tonewheel near an electromagnetic pickup and amplifying that signal. The B-3 has 91 of those tonewheels with each key connected to a fixed set of tonewheel outputs. Drawbar settings control how these are mixed together. The tube preamplifier subsequently shapes the sound a little further — filtering and distortion take hold here — while factoring the position of the expression pedal. This not only acts as a volume control but also affects the frequency response of the preamp which is connected to a speaker.

Speaking of which, B-3 V faithfully simulates the favoured Leslie tone cabinet, containing a power amplifier that drives a rotating horn and a stationary woofer firing into a rotating drum reflector. Spellbinding spatial and frequency-shifting effects above and beyond the sound-shaping effects of commonplace loudspeakers are all perfectly possible!

Arturia’s award-winning Analog Classics family of virtual instruments recreate hard-to-source synthesizers and classic keyboards. As a worthy addition, Farfisa V virtually puts players of today in the musical driving seat with a still-sought-after sound that drove the hits of several decades: Farfisa’s famous Compact Deluxe electronic organ, one of a series of iconic instruments manufactured in Italy between 1964-1968. A staple of Sixties-produced popular music, they made their musical mark with a wider-ranging sound than that of their main VOX Continental competitor. With more bass waveforms and an expanded percussion and vibrato section sales soared.

Today, though, finding and maintaining an original Farfisa has become both difficult and costly. Farfisa V solves such problems by bringing all the benefits without any of the hassles to the present-day desktop! Developed using an original hardware organ for reference, it meticulously models the original circuits and sounds of the famous Farfisa Compact Deluxe. Features from its Duo Compact series sibling are also included alongside an authentic combo amp simulation. Standalone instrument operation on Mac OS X and Windows is a given for performance purposes. Plug-in support for all major formats inside any DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) with easy MIDI-learn functionality provides hands-on control of many of its parameters and automation support for considerable creative control. The PC361 offers an enormous sound set of over 850 programs, raising the bar once again for both audio quality and variety. With the best samples in the industry, and a powerful, responsive synth engine breathing life into them, you'll feel like you're playing an actual instrument, not just playing samples. Of course there's the famous Kurzweil Triple Strike Piano, with dozens of variations to accommodate every kind of player. All of the basic sounds - basses, guitars, drums, horns and synths - have been painstakingly programmed to reflect the needs of today's professional players, representing a broad selection of styles and flavors from the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and today.

Also included is our Classic Keys ROM, which puts an impossibly large vintage keyboard rig at your fingertips. These are vintage emulations which actually sound like vintage instruments and classic recordings. The recognizable sounds of those classic electromechanical instruments, with all of their characteristic imperfections, have been faithfully re-created, along with pedals, amps and speakers. Lush Mellotrons, growling electric pianos, and punchy Clavinets are all there at the touch of a button, programmed to sound just like those classic albums.

For more vintage firepower, the PC361 is equipped with the most advanced version of Kurzweil's widely lauded KB3 Mode tonewheel organ simulator, which screams, sputters and sizzles just like the original. In addition to newly developed Leslie effects, and a new bank of B3 programs, we've also included sounds from the classic Vox and Farfisa combo organs. The PC361's 9 sliders provide real-time drawbar control.

The PC361 offers a full range of world class orchestral sounds, including our new String Section ROM bank, making it ideal for film-scoring and soundtrack projects. Every type of articulation, every nuance has been captured, with samples of full and divisi sections of violins, violas, cellos, and double bass. Dynamic V.A.S.T...

Under the hood of the PC361 is simply the most powerful synthesis engine ever created by Kurzweil. Dynamic V.A.S.T. picks up where the K series left off. Having up to 32 layers per program means that emulations of real instruments can be extremely detailed and accurate, while the synthesized sounds can be extraordinarily large and complex.

Expanding upon our V.A.S.T. architecture, the PC361's new architecture delivers more power and flexibility combined with unprecedented ease of use. Users can now create and store their own DSP algorithms, with nearly limitless possibilities for routing.

In another huge development, we've resurrected the VA-1 Virtual Analog Synthesizer, having built it's synthesis engine right into the new system. Hear the VA-1's power-shaped, anti-aliasing oscillators (including supersaw, triplesaw, and hard sync oscillators) combined with a newer, larger set of V.A.S.T. filters (like the classic-style 4pole low pass w/ resonance) and non-linear processors and you'll understand why the internet is buzzing about this feature.
Cascade Mode...

Every layer in a program can be routed through the DSP of any other layer, in series or blended together, with up to 32 layers. It's the same concept as Triple Mode on our K26 series, without the 3 layer limit. You can run your sound through literally dozens of filters (which can all move independently in real-time) in addition to Kurzweil's signature DSP processors like Shaper, Wrap and Distortion, allowing for some truly dazzling results. This is one more feature which makes the PC361's synth engine so powerful and so different than anything else on the market.
User Interface...

While the PC361's user interface may look familiar to veteran Kurzweil users, major improvements have been made, allowing for a much more user friendly experience. The PC361's backlit 240 x 64 display conveys all the information you'll need, when you need it, in an elegant, easy to navigate environment.

Programs are categorized and can be selected by scrolling or by using bank and program select buttons. Further, user favorites can be organized into convenient "Quick Access" banks for easy one touch recall.

In addition to fast navigation, each preset sound is accompanied by an "Info" screen which can be accessed at the touch of a button. As every sound can have its own customized set of real-time, physical controllers (sliders, modwheel, switches, CC Pedals, mono pressure, etc.) , the Info button makes viewing the current assignments effortless.

Complimenting the PC361's killer soundset is the the Easy Audition feature, where every one of the PC361's presets is linked to a bank of "riffs", recorded sequences which demonstrate each sound in an appropriate context. Just hit the "play" button on the front panel and get a quick musical preview of the current selection. Program selection and navigation, fast and easy.

With up to 16 insert effects, two available auxiliary sends, PLUS a global Master FX section, the PC361 offers more than twice the processing power of our acclaimed KDFX engine. Effects can be chained together in series, or distributed among the PC361's 16 multitimbral channels. Future Retro Announces Release of New Mondovox Product


"The Mondovox provides new ways to play, control, and breathe new life into MIDI sound modules. The Mondovox allows you to play up to 16 monophonic synthesizers polyphonically, in ways you would expect to find in features-laden polysynths, and also expanding upon those ideas for many new and exciting possibilities such as three new detune modes for creating truly massive sounds.

Although it's designed to play multiple monosynths (such as our popular XS semi-modular synthesizer), the Mondovox can be used with any monophonic, polyphonic, multitimbral or single voice, analog, digital, virtual synthesizers or samplers.... it doesn't matter, as long as it has MIDI.

With the plethora of inexpensive monophonic synthesizers being manufactured at this time, we believe the Mondovox is the ideal solution to expand their capabilities to include new polyphonic possibilities.

"The Modovox takes polyphonic MIDI data and translates it to so that each voice is on its own MIDI channel.

There are nine different polyphonic modes of operation:

UNISON: Stack up to 16 voices to play in unison for one big sound. Unlike traditional polysynths that only allow you to play a single note while in unison mode, the Mondovox allows you to play up to 16 notes simultaneously, creating huge unison chords. Obviously, this will depend on the available voices in the sound module you are controlling. While digital and virtual analog synths usually provide high voice counts to support these unison chords, controlling analog monosynths in this way will activate their auto-glide portamento circuitry.

UNISON DETUNE: Three Unison Detune modes -- detune down, detune up/down, and detune up -- allow you to play up to 16 notes in unison, as well as detune all voices to varying degrees simply by moving the pitch bender. Once you discover this feature, you will wonder how you ever made music without it. As you increase the pitch bender value, small amounts of detune will create "true chorus" effects, unlike traditional cyclic DSP chorusing effects. Increase the pitch bender more to discover that you can make any sound module take on that "super saw"-like quality, although obviously you're not limited to just sawtooth waveforms. Increase the pitch bender even more and sounds take on buzzing swarm effects, and finally as you move into extreme settings, a dark side reveals itself, producing eerie dissonant sound effects perfect for any scary movie. Releasing the pitch bender retains the degree of detuning so you're free to concentrate on playing and tweaking your sounds. Moving the pitch bender in the negative range will then clear the detune setting, bringing all voices back into perfect unison.

Just like in Unison mode, you can play up to 16 of these detuned unison voices polyphonically, so long as your sound module supports that many voices. By the way, that's 256 voices, for those wondering. Let's just say you haven't experienced "phat" until you've tried the Mondovox!

Another interesting fact about these detune modes is that you can detune the voices, then select a different polyphonic mode in the Mondovox and it will remember the detuning for each voice. This capability creates a wonderfully simplistic way to get boring "perfectly tuned" digital synths out of their static element and into new experimental territory.

UNISON POLY: In this mode, playing a single note will cause all active voices to play in unison. Playing a second note will reassign half the voices to the new note value, and playing additional notes will further allocate the available voices as evenly as possible between the number of notes currently being played. Unison Poly mode allows the overall weight of a musical part to remain fairly consistent when alternating between playing single notes and chords.

DON'T PANIC: If you are an intergalactic traveller you probably already know what this mode is for. However for those of you who aren't, it's simply a means for you to stay calm if the sound module you are controlling is not be able to comprehend the large amounts of MIDI data the Mondovox is capable of producing. In other words, it sends an "All Notes Off" MIDI message to clear voices should they become latched. Selecting the proper processor routing mode (mentioned later), will usually elliminate the need for such panic.

POLY RANDOM: Poly Random mode allows notes played to be randomly sent to 1 of up to 16 voices, adding more variation from one note to the next when similar sounds are played. You may also assign different sounds to each MIDI channel within a sound module, and this mode will then randomly play those different sounds at the current pitch.

POLY CHASE: This mode plays one available voice after another sequentially. Sometimes this is referred to as "round robin." Poly Chase ensures that if you play a single note repeatedly, that it will sound slightly different with each new key press. In addition, the Mondovox lets you use this mode as a psuedo sequencer, allowing you to play different sounds sequentially on different MIDI channels. You can set the loop point from 1 to 16 steps by the number of voices you define. The Mondovox will reset to begin playing voice 1 each time you select this mode.

POLY FIRST: Poly First mode always plays voice 1 first, and as more notes are played simultaneously, voices 2, 3, 4, etc. will sound. Repeatedly playing and releasing a single note will allow voice 1 to play only. This feature allows the voices played to be more predictable with repeatable results.

CHORD MEM: While in Poly First mode, you can play and hold up to 16 notes, and switch to the Chord Memory selection to latch the chord into memory. You can then play that same chord by playing a single note on your MIDI controller. The root of the latched chord will be the first note you played while in Poly First mode. Not only can you play chords with single keys, you can play up to 16 transpositions of this chord by playing up to 16 keys. Of course this will be limited by the number of available voices in the sound module you are controlling.

DEFINE VOICES: When in Define Voices mode, you can enter the number of voices to be enabled by simply tapping a key on your MIDI controller once for each voice. The number of voices defined will remain in memory even when the unit is turned off.

DEFINE ROUTING: This mode determines how MIDI is handled by each of the four internal MIDI processors. Routing 1 allows each of the four processors to play all 16 MIDI channels -- useful when controlling a multitimbral sound module and you only need to use a single MIDI output. However, you could connect up to 16 multitimbral sound modules to play giant stacks of up to 256 voices at once using all available MIDI Out ports. Routing 2 assigns each processor to handle four MIDI channels in sequential order, allowing faster MIDI timing than the Routing 1 option while still maintaining easy routing when using lower voice counts. Routing 3 assigns each processor to handle every fourth MIDI channel, provideing the fastest MIDI timing, as four notes can be sent over MIDI simultaneously. The routing selection is stored in memory even when power is turned off.

The Mondovox will detect the MIDI channel of the first note it receives after being powered on, and it will automatically set the incoming MIDI channel to that value.

A universal DC power supply is provided with each unit, that can operate anywhere in the world.

Each Mondovox is handmade in the USA using only the finest components, with a great deal of attention going into every unit. A rugged all-steel chassis makes this unit nearly indestructible, and the unique finishing technique used on the brushed stainless steel front panels is truly an industry first.
