CYMRU Beats 17 Modular Synth Meet Announced - Saturday June 17th, Cardiff

Full details: https://cymrubeats.com/cb17/

"Cymru Beats, the annual Welsh meeting for modular synthesiser enthusiasts, marks its third year in 2017.

We’re heading back to Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff again for a day of electronic music and sound, but this year with an even better venue, Chapter's Seligman Theatre.

The first modular synths were developed in the 1960s by legendary US synth makers RA Moog and Co. and the scene received a major injection of energy and popularity with the invention of the “Eurorack” system by Germanys Doepfer Musikelektronik in the 90s. The backlash against the computer and software, and the rush back to electronic analogue hardware is still exploding today.

As well as niche specialists there are many mainstream artists who have discovered the joy of the modular – including Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Lloyd Cole and Radiohead.

The evening performances will see some truly great and talented British electronic musicians and sound sculptors."

Performers for this year's event include Mylar Melodies, Nigel Mullaney & Ian Boddy, Martin Dubka, Wisdom Water, and Dr John Biddulph.

E-scape June 11th 2016 Electronic Artists

E-Scape is the annual all day festival of live electronic and ambient music held at ‘The Cut Arts Centre‘ in Halesworth, Suffolk. It is usually held at the end of May, beginning of June, the week after the bank holiday weekend. The event is hosted by UK record label AD Music to promote traditional electronic music from around the globe. It usually features AD Music artists but is not exclusive to the label and always includes non AD Music artists.

It started as “the Bungay Bash” in 2009 and moved to Halesworth in 2015 as the newly named E-Scape. A unique selling point for the event, as of 2015, is that the ticket includes an audio ‘download’ of the event in high rate MP3 or Flac, or on USB stick, available 2 weeks after the event. This means that fans of the electronic music scene from around the world who are otherwise unable to attend can still hear the concert, albeit afterwards, and are also actively supporting their favourite acts and the electronic music scene by so doing."

DiN48 - Parallel Worlds & Self Oscillate - World Adapter

Published on Jan 14, 2018 mamonu

Update2: Video added above, Vimeo posted here.

"All tracks composed and produced by Ingo Zobel and Bakis Sirros, between 2010 and 2014, in Athens, Greece and Riedstadt, Germany except Legend Silence composed by Ingo Zobel, Bakis Sirros and India Czajkowska (vocals and voice effects). Mastered by Ian Boddy (April 2015)."

Update: you can find a review of the release on https://hypnagogue.net.

A new release from Ingo Zobel (Self Oscillate) and MATRIXSYNTH Member, Bakis Sirros (Parallel Worlds) on din.org.uk.

"Ingo Zobel (Self Oscillate) and Bakis Sirros (Parallel Worlds) first started collaborating via the internet in 2004. Their first album, “Current Flow”, under the project name 'Interconnected', was released in 2010 on the Belgian VU-US label. Following this a vinyl EP of ambient tracks called 'Mechanic Environments' was released in 2013 on the Dohkonul record label.

For 'World Adapter', their second full collaborative album, Ingo and Bakis are using their more widely known aliases of Self Oscillate and Parallel Worlds respectively. Four years in the making this album is redolent with the sounds and textures of modular analogue synthesisers which both musicians are well known for employing in their music. Ingo uses a large Doepfer / Eurorack system whereas Bakis creates his complex sonic textures with Doepfer, Serge and Buchla systems as employed on his previous DiN releases (Obsessive Surrealism (DiN26), Shade (DiN32), Exit Strategy with Ian Boddy (DiN37) and Morphogenic with Dave Bessell (DiN41)).

Once their modular improvisations are recorded they are micro-edited in Ableton Live to form the ten tracks that make up 'World Adapter'. On the track 'Legend Silence' they collaborate with the Polish singer/composer India Czajkowska whose ethereal voice adds a distinctive flavour to this composition. The album has an IDM flavour, full of complex modulations and intricate rhythms. The duo then hang beguiling, simple melodies around these structures to create another intriguing quality release from the DiN label.

Machines used:
Doepfer, Euro, Serge, Buchla, MOTM, Moon, Blacet, Metalbox, RS-Integrator, Technosaurus & Synthesizers.com modulars.
Oberheim Xpander & OB-Mx.
Korg PE1000, MS20, Mono/Poly & Z1.
Clavia Nord Modular, Nordrack2 & Nordrack3.
Ableton Live & NI Reaktor software.
Roland System-100, Waldorf Microwave and various other string machines, analogue keyboards, tape echoes, reverbs, CV modifiers and generators."

Black Horses of the Sun by Dave Bessell

Skyrim Dave Bessell Published on Feb 7, 2015

"Track from the album 'Black Horses of the Sun' full album available here http://www.din.org.uk/din/node/495

Video and music by db"

MATRIXSYNTH Patreon supporter Dave Bessell has a new album out titled 'Black Horses of the Sun'. The release also features Ian Boddy. Limited to 500 copies, it is available on CD and digital download. The following is an excerpt on the release for the MATRIXSYNTH archives. You'll find the full track list and an additional demo at DiN (also linked above).

"Black Horses of the Sun is the latest release from Dave Bessell. This artist will be familiar as one of the founding members of analogue supergroup Node but has also in recent years released a number of fascinating solo recordings (including Morphogenic with Parallel Worlds DiN41).

These new tracks build on the distinctive detailed atmospheric style of previous releases and add a more melodic focus that gives the proceedings an extra layer of interest this time around. As with previous releases nothing is quite what it seems in the sonic worlds created here, melodies frequently take an unusual twist and the tracks can sometimes take off at an unexpected tangent. The tools are predominantly analogue hardware with a sprinkling of contributions from custom written software alongside treated guitar. The atmospheres range from mysterious to darkly foreboding with occasional more relaxed flashes of ambient sunlight. Overall there is often a widescreen cinematic sense of scale which would not be out of place in a film soundtrack. An eclectic variety of stylistic influences flicker through this music, from classical to industrial, Berlin school ambient to jazz, to the Eno, Fripp & Bowie collaborations of the Berlin years through to echoes of psytrance. All make their appearance from time to time.

On this release Dave Bessell is joined on a track each by Ian Boddy (well known mainstay of the UK analogue synth scene), Lyonel Bauchet (French TV and Film composer and all round Buchla wizard) and Liam Boyle (incredibly versatile soundtrack composer and Beatles fanatic). Each add their own distinctive contribution to the proceedings. Overall a varied and intriguing release which never falls into the predictable patterns of analogue electronica, combining masterful evocative sound design with intricate arrangements, this will repay repeated listenings and is not to be missed."

Rob Papen produces extras for The 4 Element Synth book/DVD set

"ECHT, THE NETHERLANDS: virtual instrument and plug-in developer Rob Papen Soundware’s namesake founder/Managing Director Rob Papen is proud to announce additional online content for The 4 Element Synth subtractive synthesis instructional book/DVD set...

Last year globally renowned sound designer Rob Papen published The 4 Element Synth book with four accompanying DVDs totalling over 10 hours of tutorial content to critical acclaim. According to fellow sound designer Ian Boddy, “The whole package comes in a beautifully packaged book. Superbly bound and elegantly printed, it has the feel of a quality coffee table book — it even has such nice details as a silk bookmark and pull-out 4 Element Synth chart, complete with four DVDs stuffed to the brim to watch in conjunction with the contents of the book.”

Appropriately subtitled The secrets of subtractive synthesis, this 200-plus-page enlightening tome was many years in the making, effectively dating back to 2001 when Rob Papen started teaching exclusive masterclasses in synth sound design in his well-stocked studio using the likes of his beloved Roland Jupiter 8 programmable polysynth and seminal Korg MS-20 semi-modular monosynth alongside other vintage analogue classics and more modern counterparts. Here he developed an approach to working with subtractive synthesis that he termed The 4-Element Synth© — hence the book/DVD set’s title. As implied by name, the book basically breaks subtractive synthesis down into four digestible and distinct chapters or elements: Element-1 / Oscillators, Element-2 / Filter, Element-3 / Amplifier, and Element-4 / Modulators — each of which receive their own equally easy-to-follow DVD treatment, thanks in no small part to the talented author and presenter’s easy- going onscreen persona.

No teaching technique needs to be set in stone, however; there is almost always room for improvement — or even additional content, as is the case with The 4 Element Synth. The beauty of online content is that it can, of course, be updated far faster than print or physical media, which is exactly what Rob Papen has done by uploading two additional Element-4 / Modulators chapter-related bonus videos here: http://www.robpapen.com/book-a-dvds-extras.html

Anyone who has already purchased The 4 Element Synth book/DVD set is invited to thereby (re)read the LFO and Element-2 section (p152) and then watch an all-new accompanying video about LFO and resonance modulation. Meanwhile, the Three points to keep in mind using an envelope section (p107) also benefits from additional demonstrative video content; as Rob Papen himself says, “There’s another important point about envelope modulation of the filter. As we’ve said already in the Element-2 chapter, many producers and synth players often use only the cutoff knob; they forget that there is also an envelope amount and the envelope settings that can change the sound — and not just a little bit! Keep these three points in mind when you’re working with the filter section of your synthesizer.”

Speaking of synthesizers, apart from those aforesaid analogue classics and a rather impressive looking (and sounding) ‘Moog-alike’ System-22 modular system from Synthesizers.com — all of which make musical onscreen appearances throughout The 4 Element Synth DVDs, Rob Papen also makes much use of his own company’s Predator — a ‘phat’ sounding killer soft synth that combines inspiring presets and first-class features to create the perfect ‘go-to’ synth for contemporary music production. Predator and Predator RE users can also download the preset banks used on the DVDs from here: http://www.robpapen.com/book-a-dvds-extras.html

Needless to say, anyone wishing to literally uncover the secrets of subtractive synthesis should surely look no further than The 4 Element Synth book/DVD set — now more enlightening than ever, thanks to these latest enhancements!

The 4 Element Synth book/DVD set can be ordered online directly from Rob Papen within the EU for €74.00 EURO (including 6% VAT) or outside the EU for €69.00 EURO — plus shipping (where appropriate) — from here: http://www.robpapen.com/buy-dvd-sound-design.html

Rob Papen is also delighted to announce availability of The 4 Element Synth from US dealer Sweetwater, as well as via various European dealers."

Parallel Worlds and Dave Bessell - 'Morphogenic'

"DiN41 | 2012 | Limited to 500 copies

Release date 30th October 2012
Morphogenic sees a new collaborative project on the DiN label, although the name of Parallel Worlds should be familiar to DiN aficionados due to the two solo albums Obsessive Surrealism (DiN26) & Shade (DiN32) as well as the more recent collaboration with DiN label boss Ian Boddy on Exit Strategy (DiN37). Dave Bessell is, of course, a new artist to join the DiN roster, although his name should be familiar to lovers of analogue electronica due to his contribution to the almost legendary band Node. One of the four founder members of this group, Dave is also joined on the track Heterodyne by Ed Buller the world renowned producer and master of the art of sequencing large vintage modular synths.

Bessell has a formal education in classical composition and these skills blend perfectly on Morphogenic with the intricate, sequenced rhythms of Bakis Sirros aka Parallel Worlds. Whilst the eight tracks have all the fluidity and organic feel of analogue synth dominated pieces, they have a shape and form to them that make them fascinating compositions. As well as joining Sirros in the analogue arsenal with his mighty Macbeth M5n, Bessell also provides some very effective and unusual guitar backdrops. Bakis made extensive use of Serge, Buchla and Oberheim synths in this recording which contribute to the warm and organic soundscapes. Bessell also writes custom software that is employed to great effect in providing unusual and detailed textures through which the incessant, complex rhythms and beats of Sirros rise and fall.

further details and clips here

All tracks composed, arranged and produced by Bakis Sirros & Dave Bessell between April 2011 and April 2012, except track 6, by Bakis Sirros, Dave Bessell & John Sirros.

Bakis Sirros: Euro/Doepfer, Serge, Buchla 200e modulars, MS20, Odyssey, Xpander, 4Voice, string machines & software.
Dave Bessell: Macbeth M5n, Gibson Les Paul & custom software.

India Czajkowska: Flute on track 4 and processed voice on track 6.
Federica Rubino: Bowed double bass on track 4.
Mastered by Ian Boddy July 2012.

Many consider Berlin to be the birthplace of the 1970's electronic music movement that has proved so influential to the development of a myriad of electronica musicians, both past and present. So when Boddy got the opportunity to play an experimental set at the Electricity series of concerts held in the Lichtblick-Kino in this famous city, he jumped at the chance.
