Musikmesse: Clavia Nord Wave OS 2

Clavia Nord Wave OS 2.02
"We are pleased to announce that the OS of the Nord Wave have been updated to version 2.02 that besides a few bugfixes, also includes some exciting new features: NEW FEATURES • The analog triangle and sawtooth waveforms are now shapeable. This provides you with extended harmonic control, and allows you also to create interesting results by modulating the shape. • 6 new waveform options have been added in the Osc 1 Misc category. These consist of 2 new noises, three new sine waves and 1 new pulse wave: • Misc n2 - Complementing the original noise is a new "narrow" noise band which gives it a pitched character. The Shape control allows you to dial in a timbre ranging from a wide band noise to a fluctuating sine wave. • Misc n3 - The metallic noise waveform produces a noisy signal with a bright metallic timbre. The timbre is created by a dense cloud of short pulses with carefully detuned frequency relations, creating clusters of high pitched partials in its audio spectrum. This type of noise is useful to create the metallic sounds made by acoustic cymbals and hihats. • Misc SO & SA - 2 shapeable sinus waveforms, one with the addition of odd numbered harmonics, and the other with both odd and even numbered. • Misc SS - A third sine wave, which is syncable. The Shape control sets the pitch of the "hidden" sync oscillator. • Misc PF - This pulse wave is of the "fixed" variety, the width is adjusted in absolute time values with the Shape control. This makes the width constant across the keyboard and results in a nice and rugged spectrum with fixed formants, similar in character to many acoustic instruments. • The number of FM categories for both Osc 1 & 2 have been almost doubled with the addition of 18 new, 3 operator FM algorithms. • The update also makes the Nord Wave compatible with the ever growing Nord Sample Library, and the Nord Sound Manager v5.x and Nord Sample Editor v2.x. This allows you to exchange samples with Nord Electro 3 users and to download lots of new sounds from the Nord Sample Library. BUG FIXES • Fixed an issue with Morphs getting sluggish during heavy load. • Improved Note On response time, the Wave is now reacting faster. • Fixed a rare issue where the master level could drop significantly. Korg MS20 Demos

Andre Majorel postes some MS20 samples on AH. I asked him if it would be okay to post them here. He said yes, so here it is. Thanks Andre!

"All MS-20 with no external processing other than delay and reverb.

http://www.teaser.fr/~amajorel/misc/telegraphiste-3.1.mp3

MS-20 + delay + reverb. It demonstrates a characteristic of the
MS-20 : because the keyboard CV out is Hz/V and the VCF Fc CV in
is V/oct, the VCF tracks the keyboard exponentially (i.e. the
cutoff frequency is too low in the bottom, too high in the top).

http://www.teaser.fr/~amajorel/misc/ms20boing.mp3

IIRC, resonance on both filters with Fc swept at different rates.

http://www.teaser.fr/~amajorel/misc/ms20shot.mp3
http://www.teaser.fr/~amajorel/misc/ms20zip1.mp3
http://www.teaser.fr/~amajorel/misc/ms20zip2.mp3

Assorted junk.

My MS-20 doesn't have any subboard so I guess it's a Korg35 version."

Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave OS 1.5 Update Adds MPE Support, Poly Unison, Free Running OSCS & Long LFOs

via Groove Synthesis

3rd Wave OS version 1.5

new in this release:

- support for MIDI MPE controllers - enable MPE from the GLOBAL menu and explore the new modulation sources at the end of the list. Pitch bend range can be set in the MISC menu

- option for free running analog oscillators in the MISC menu which is settable per patch - In the analog waveform mode, which you are using when you select the Axx waveforms like Saw and Square, now has the option to make the waveforms not reset when you start a new note. In this mode, the oscillators will continue to drift from each other as they do on some fully analog synthesizers. There are two side effects if you are using free running for the analog waveforms:

1. When two or more oscillators are running at the same time, the phase of the waveforms will not be reset and could start at any position. As a result, there will be phase cancellation compared to having the oscillators always start at the same point. What you will hear is that the notes will change volume level slightly as the oscillators start and also drift in and out of phase with each other.

2. In the normal mode the oscillator always starts at zero. Now it could start at any point in its phase position. That means when you hit a note, a single oscillator could be at 0, +1.0, -1.0, or anywhere in between. If it starts at or close to +1.0 ot -1.0, you are going from no sound to fully on immediately. This can cause a click at the beginning of the note depending on the phase. It is noticeable mostly when using a sine wave, and not too noticeable with something like a saw or square. If you want to use this free running mode, turn the attack time up to +20 or higher to quickly fade in and avoid the potential click.

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Very underrated synth. Very similar sound to CZ synths BUT with analogue filters/VCA/Chorus and crunchy drum machine. [Update: Note the HT-700 used SD Synthesis while the CZ used Phase Distortion similar to Yamaha's FM synthesis] Boxed, as new condition with plastic over the screen:

Analogue filters
Analogue VCAs
Analogue Chorus
Sampled 8-bit drum sounds that resemble the legendary Casio RZ-1 drum machine
Fully programmable drum machine
3 part multitimbral (full control over midi plus from the keyboard)
Same as the HT-3000 but mini keys

Below videos are not mine (and AWFUL audio quality) but they do show what sounds are capable with a few simple mods... Here is a sound demo from the actual synth that is for sale: http://punkdisco.co.uk/misc/misc/audio/demo.mp3"

Misc Showers

Misc Showers from Peter Speer on Vimeo.

"Transforming a pulse stream into a variety of rainfall sounds: 'Hurricane Under a Tarp' (starting at 0:02), 'Rain On a Tin Shack' (starting at 0:40), 'Carwash' (starting at 0:54), 'Gutter Dripping on a Metal Plate' (starting at 1:12), 'Rapidly Heating Pipes' (starting at 1:27) and finally 'Storm At Sea' (starting at 2:03).

The tone source in this patch is the Telharmonic's Noise output, fed into a QMMG VCA, opened by Maths Ch. 4 and sent through a band pass filter (QMMG Ch. 3 and 4 in high and low pass filter modes respectively). This is then passed into Clouds (in Clocked Delay mode) and from there to the Erbe-Verb, which does most of the heavy lifting.

The DPO (in LFO mode), Wogglebug, Pressure Points and Maths (Ch. 1) all provide modulation, and TEMPI supplies the timing information.

I particularly liked 'Gutter Dripping on a Metal Plate' (starting at 1:12), 'Rapidly Heating Pipes' (starting at 1:27).

Some Korg MS20 Acid

Via Punkdisco.

As promised, here is the MS20 track out of our new song:

http://www.punkdisco.co.uk/misc/audio/MS20_PlayedBy303ViaESP.wma
http://www.punkdisco.co.uk/misc/audio/MS20_PlayedBy303ViaESP.wav

Starts to get quite heavy at 0:36.

Being played using the audio from a 303 into the ESP. Got some reverb and
delay on it (with some overdriving on the analogue delay) - recorded wet so
can't get rid of this.

Can't remember exactly how this was patched (main reason why I love
analogue!) but something is modulating the MS20 filters. Pretty sure we
also took the ESP envolope out and used that somewhere along the route..

Anyway, its from our new track so pls dont pinch it. Gunna be really pissed
off if I suddenly hear this in the latest Dido track or similar..

NAMM & NOT NAMM - New Products on the Synth Front

Well, it's that time of year again. Keep an eye out on the NAMM label (added to top right menu) for everything NAMM and more. More in that anything new will get the label whether it's shown at NAMM or not. It's about new gear. Updates in this post will be preceded in red. Some already in below. See "The NAMM List!" link under the Twitter, Facebook, and RSS labels on top of the right to get back to this post later.

(A note on the top site menus: I removed the iPhone and iPad labels as they go up in posts every day now so you can find them there. eBay links are on the right, so I removed it as well.)

That said, the following are some of the things to look out for. If you have any NAMM info feel free to comment and/or send it in. If I missed anything, let me know! If you are going to NAMM, feel free to send pics and video in.

Playlist:

1. Monolimp (Monologue, Volca FM, Novation Circuit)
A limping synth jam featuring the Korg Monologue, Volca FM, Novation Circuit and Zoom MS70-CDR.

The Novation Circuit is the master clock, with tempo 90 BPM. The Monologue and the Volca follow suit, but the delays on the MS-70CDRs have tempo set to 75 and 77 BPM, resulting in a limping 5/8-ish time signature.
2. Eclipse (Monologue, Volca FM, Novation Circuit, EHX720, MS-70CDR)
Total eclipse of the moon over Norway tonight. A mellow jam featuring the Korg Monologue, Volca FM, Novation Circuit, EHX720 Looper and Zoom MS70-CDR.

The chords were played into the EHX720 looper note by note from the Monologue. The Circuit is doing arp, base and drums. The Volca FM is doing a simple repeating pattern. And the Monologue is used for the solo.
