Buchla Easel Command 208C - Glow

video upload by TheTrackdriver

"A semi-generative piece of music. I recently built a 266 Source of uncertainty clone from Samodular which is sending random quantised notes to the Buchla Easel Command 208C. The range is set by the pitch sliders on each oscillator. The Easel sends the pulser signal to the 266 which splits them up and send them back to each lo pass gate with some random stuff added.

The chords comes from a Waldorf Blofeld and the bass from a Moog Sub 37. I used some pedals and a Roland Chorus Echo RE-301 for effects and recorded everything onto a cassette tape (Marantz PMD 430 recorder)."

Details on the RE-202 via Roland:

A Masterpiece Returns in the Modern Era

Introduced in 1974, the Roland RE-201 Space Echo stands among the most legendary and sought-after effect units ever produced. This tape-based classic remained in production for over 14 straight years, and its distinctive rhythmic echo sounds, warm character, and highly playable sonic quirks still inspire musicians, producers, and audio mixers over four decades on.

Backed by intensive R&D and our latest innovations, the RE-202 faithfully delivers the authentic sound and behavior of the Space Echo like never before. Built by the company that designed the original, this advanced pedal captures the RE-201’s magic in flawless detail, from the magnetic tape and motor properties to the vibrant spring reverb and colorful preamp circuit. And to take things even further, we’ve expanded the vintage Space Echo experience with lots of new features tuned for today’s music.

Tape Echo Magic

Tape echo was the first delay effect and one of the first effect processors available for electronic musicians. In contrast with today’s CPU-based digital units, a tape echo is a simple machine that uses a motor to pull magnetic tape across one or more record/playback heads. Warm, full, and dynamic, the tape echo sound is influenced by many factors. The ever-changing input level colors the sound with varying amounts of tape saturation and compression. In addition, motor speed fluctuations, friction, wow and flutter, and other elements introduce an appealing modulated character that’s subtle and continually evolving.

MicrowaveXT on Tape Loops

video upload by Miguel d'Oliveira

"Playing with the artifacts coming from the use of tape loops (such as tape delay and the finite length of recording tape, etc...) to sketch a song idea.

The tape delay here is very close to what you get from a popular piece of kit such as the Roland Space Echo (except this is not varispeed and I didn't block the erase head)"

Hydrasynth Deluxe Demos by the sun god RA

Playlist:

1. Hydrasynth Deluxe multi patch: Blue Lotus RA
This is an attempt to make a "pressure-weighted portamento" patch on the Hydrasynth, heavily inspired by the Expressive E Osmose demo video by Christophe Duquesne [posted here]. I found that the Hydrasynth's Polytouch-keyboard really adds expressiveness to a simple monophonic flute-patch "Blue Pipes RA". Combined with "Blue Mandolin RA" on the lower side of the keyboard, with some key-split crossfade between them, the middle part of the keyboard combines polyphonic mandolin and monophonic flute. Preset M1-025 on The Hydrasynth Deluxe. SHOW LESS
2. Hydrasynth Deluxe multi patch: Old Times RA
This is Hydrasynth Deluxe multi preset M1-015, a dual patch. The lower partial is "L'apocalypse RA" from "the sun god RA" patch bank, an attempt to recreate the wonderful string sound that Vangelis got out of his Hammond organ/echoplex/tape echo in his "L'apocalypse des animaux"-era in the beginning of the 1970's. The upper partial is "Waxroll Piano RA".
3. Hydrasynth Deluxe multi patch: Seafloor Harp RA
Hydrasynth Deluxe preset M1-010 Seafloor Harp RA, a dual layer of "Southern Seas RA" and "Jomfrubad RA".
4. Hydrasynth Deluxe multi patch: Documentarist RA
Hydrasynth Deluxe preset M2-063 Documentarist RA. A dual layer of "1934 Upright RA" and "After Mirage RA".
5. Hydrasynth Deluxe multi patch: Electrosplit RA
Split between "Magnetisque II RA" and "E081 Voice Crystal RA"
6. Hydrasynth single patch: Deluxe Piano RA
Inspired by the SOS “synth secrets” articles about synthesizing pianos, I tried to make a “realistic” piano patch on the Hydrasynth. This is single preset “A011 Deluxe Piano RA” on the Hydrasynth Deluxe.
7. Hydrasynth Deluxe multi patch: Hydra Orchest RA
8. Hydrasynth Deluxe multi patch: Miami Bass RA
M1-016 Miami Bass RA - an attempt to make a split patch of Jupiter-8 bass arpeggio and pad from Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice" soundtrack. Last part is M2-008 Miami Splice RA, pad now on lower half of the keyboard, while upper is reminiscent of the Fairlight-type lead sound in "Crockett's theme".
9. Hydrasynth Deluxe multi patch: Drive U Home RA
Preset "M1-045 Drive U Home RA" on the Hydrasynth Deluxe.Bread & butter. A split between bass guitar "Basketbass RA" and analog pad "Pro-5 Carpad RA". The drum machine is a Roland TR-6S hanging on an IKEA "Isberget" laptop support because of the keyboard stand angle.
10. Hydrasynth Deluxe multi patch: Johansson RA
A dual split patch with «Utanmyr Bass RA» as the lower part, and «Utanmyr Piano RA» (slightly tweaked preset «Deluxe Piano RA») as the upper part. I was planning to play "Visa from Utanmyra" by Jan Johansson, but discovered I'm no piano player. So instead I made up this little melody, much easier to play.
11. Hydrasynth Deluxe multi patch: Orchestra Hit RA
Trying to see if I could make a Fairlighty sampled orchestra hit on the Hydrasynth Deluxe, I tweaked preset M1-012 Hydra Orchest RA using chord mode, some envelope to pitch and Lo-fi FX.
12. Hydrasynth single patch: Cimbalom RA
This is an attempt to make a "realistic" cimbalom for the Hydrasynth. This is the lower partial of multi patch M2-045.
13. Hydrasynth single patch: Cimbalom RA
This is an attempt to make a "realistic" cimbalom for the Hydrasynth. This is the lower partial of multi patch M2-045.

Cherry Audio Introduces Stardust 201 🌠 | Roland RE-201 Space Echo Emulation

video upload by Cherry Audio

"Stardust 201 Tape Echo is a hot-rodded interpretation of the classic Roland "Space Echo" tape echo effects of the 70s and 80s. With the inclusion of a spring reverb and chorus effects in some models, the Space Echo was truly groundbreaking with its fantastic variety of sound colors.

Stardust 201 precisely recreates the limited fidelity and stability of audio tape, providing a natural rolloff of bass and treble frequencies for super-warm tonality and minor speed variances, lending an organic chorusing quality to repeats. Cranking the intensity knob overloads the circuit, generating the signature other-worldly runaway echoes and feedback that only a tape echo can produce.

Cherry Audio's Stardust 201 Tape Echo includes features from the original RE-201 and RE-301 Space Echo units, and we've added some of our own to create a great-sounding, super-flexible, ideal tape echo effect that never breaks down and never needs demagnetizing, all for less than the price of a Space Echo replacement audio tape loop!"

Cherry Audio Introduces Mercury-4 - Detailed Roland Jupiter-4 Emulation

Mercury-4 🌌 | Cherry Audio video upload by Cherry Audio

"The new Cherry Audio Mercury-4 is a detailed emulation of one of the best-sounding and quirkiest polyphonic synthesizers of the late 1970's, the Roland Jupiter-4.

It’s the rarest and most sonically unique of the fabled Jupiter series, and we’ve gone to great lengths to recreate the subtle (and not-so-subtle) nuances and character of this beloved classic.

Every aspect of Mercury-4 has been expertly modeled upon a vintage Jupiter-4 originally owned by Greg Hawkes of the legendary 80’s new wave band The Cars, and played on their double-platinum 1981 album Shake It Up.

In Greg’s own words, Mercury-4 'sounds just like my old Jupiter! It’s nice to have it back.'"

History:

Originally released in 1978, the Roland Jupiter-4 synthesizer was one of the earliest instruments to combine voice-assign polyphony with digital patch storage - that is, the ability to store and recall sounds to a digital memory and recall them at the touch of a button.

The Jupiter-4 rapidly became the go-to polysynth for numerous English and European acts in the 80's including Duran Duran, Thomas Dolby, The Human League, Simple Minds, and more, and for good reason: the Jupiter-4 sounded fantastic, with a raw, raunchy tone not found in any of the other beloved Juno and Jupiter synths. Its analog oscillators have a uniquely aggressive tone quality, the built-in sub oscillator adds girth, its oddly fast and deep LFO modulation capabilities allow it to create uniquely whacked-out modular synth-like tones, and Roland's famous stereo chorus "ensemble" circuit is beautifully implemented, adding a boatload of width and dimension.

"The 1982 Chorus Echo from Roland marked the end of the Tape Echo, I find these units make you go “mmmMMM…” which, in this case, means.. magical, mysterious, mesmerising and mechanical! ..this unit provides a ghostly, dream-state-like ambience to just about anything you put into it. Sit back, relax and come on a journey back to 1982 thru to current day with the help of some sounds from the E-mu Emulator II, the Roland Jupiter 6 & the MPC X ..through this mesmerising mechanical machine.

I requested an interview with the engineer of the Chorus Echo, but he declined due to the fact he doesn’t like repeating himself 😂 🤦🏻‍♂️

Introducing Roland ZENOLOGY FX: Authentic Roland effects for your DAW

video upload by RolandChannel

"Watch how to tap into ZENOLOGY FX and explore nearly fifty years of legendary Roland sounds, including over 90 genre-defining effects. Add delays to arps, larger-than-life modulation effects to chord progressions, and twist and distort basses and lead tones that leap from the speakers. Now you can harness the swirling JUNO chorus, feedback-drenched tape echo, and other storied sounds to add flavor to any instrument track or synth sound right inside your DAW.

Modulation effects include choruses, phasers, flangers, and more—and they work wonders on synths and other keyboard instruments. You can add movement to synth parts and enhance sounds so they seem to exist outside the bounds of your speakers. Plus, delays add space without taking away presence and immediacy.

ZENOLOGY FX includes a menagerie of unique Roland effects to propel your tracks into uncharted sonic territory. Explore the DJFX Looper and lo-fi effects from the SP-404, or the layered multi-effects of the famed JD-800 synthesizer. Or color your sounds with slicers, filters, overdrives, and other selections from the vast Roland effects legacy.

The Details:
• Includes over 90 authentic Roland effects
• Bring keyboard and synthesizer sounds to life
• Create sparkling arps, spacious keyboard riffs, monster leads, and more
• VST3, AU, and AAX support for popular DAWs"

New Gear Testdrive - Korg, TC, Strymon, Roland

video by verstaerker

"Got some new gear to test out, so I made this little track
first Sequence made with the Korg NTS-1, sequenced on the Korg Sq-64 and added some delay with the Strymon Volante

Drums made with the Yocto 8080 send through the Sherman 2x2 with some reverb on the Snare added from the TC-M3000

The later appearing sequence is from the Roland Cloud System-100, wich sounds really analog …also added Sherman Drive and Tape-Echo

The Strymon Volante is really the best Tape-Simulation out there.
The Korg Sq-64 is a quite capable sequencer . I’m not so happy that saving projects requires additionally a proper shutdown of the device. And creating/changing longer notes is a bit complicated … considering they call it polyphonic sequencer.

I love the TC-M3000 .. the reverb sounds very natural. It’s great for everything where you want to recognize the original sound and don’t smear everything with a cloud of reverb.

I was very surprised how well the Roland Cloud plugins sound. Especially the SH-2 and System-100."

Free Ableton Instruments - Tape Echo Synths built using the Roland Chorus Echo and Crumar Stratus

Expanding Sound

"Get the Free pack here https://www.gum.co/nrllx

This was a fun little pack to make! I didn't dive in too hard yet as I see a megapack in the future with this tape echo machine. I recently received my Roland Chorus Echo back from service, which is a great analog tape echo with a beautiful chorus as well as reverb. It adds a ton of character to anything you process through it. My Crumar Stratus was set up from a previous video I recorded so I thought it might be fun to make a few Ableton Instruments using the Stratus/Chorus Echo combination. I hope you enjoy them! I plan to run a lot of different instruments through the chorus echo and really have some fun with the modulation in the future."

Analog synth electro jam

Peter Maas

"Running the Roland TR-707 and TR-808 together to create that old school electro house sound. Topping is with a baseline from Sequential Pro One and pads from the Roland JX3P... some high pitched arpeggio's from the MC202. Echo provided by an Vorg Echo Orbit - 1 tape echo. Completely dawless."
