Vocoding with Lucille Ball - Machine Made Voices! (1939)

Published on Apr 13, 2014 British Pathé

A bit more talk box than vocoder, but you get the idea.

"Titles read: "MACHINE MADE VOICES!"

Hollywood, California, United States of America.

In a Hollywood CBS recording studio we see American film star actress Lucille Ball telling us she has just travelled cross-country by train. She holds two small amplifiers against her throat and mouths some words. The amplifiers transform the sound of a steam train coming from a record into 'steam train words' picked up by Lucille's larynx. I cannot make out all of them - the last are "Hello everybody".

Three technician men sit at a table wearing headphones and making notes. Lucille does another demonstration - this one seems to be 'cow words' - very difficult to decipher. I guess it was still in the early stages!

"I found a box of tapes I made of class lectures way back in the 90s when I was a philosophy student. They are from a History of Philosophy class that was taught by the late great Professor James Rachels. Rachels was a famous philosopher in his own right and for each meeting of this class, he lectured on a different key figure in the history of philosophy. This piece has excerpts from his lecture on the ideas of G.E. Moore. By coincidence, the talk relates to thoughts on necessary and contingent identity by way of analogy to the Morning Star. I recently posted another piece about about that same topic. As always, thanks for listening.

"Comes with original box, manual(s), patch cables, USB cable, power supply and - BONUS - the NS1nanobridge (pictured) which makes this Italian import fully compatible with Eurorack systems. A compact, powerful, fun and surprisingly robust-sounding instrument."We at soundmachines thought about a simple and cheap platform that will transport the main characteristic of a modular analog synthesizer in a small and friendly format, to be well recognised by musicians, makers and tinkerers worldwide. A small, but loyal to its roots, instruments of sound creation. With a digital platform added as a bonus. The soundmachines NS1nanosynth is born.Let’s talk now about dimensions. Because size does matter. Absolutely. We created something that you can extract from your bag, or a big pocket, and start patching, manipulating and definitely and positively playing. On the train? On a plane back home? At your sister’s wedding? Maybe, after all, also on a stage. The entire platform, that is a complete, albeit simple, analog modular synthesizer, is the same height and a little wider than ONE standard 5U synthesizer module. One single module. But on board the soundmachines nanomodular you have a saw core thermally stabilized v/oct VCO, a 12db lowpass and bandpass VCF, two LFOs, one loopable ADSR envelope, a standard VCA, two twistable attenuators, two pot controllers and a plethora (more than a dozen!) of “micro” modules like mixers, multiples, sample and hold, sum/sub blocks, inverters, logic or, and, nand, analog dividers, clock dividers, fixed voltage generators and several ‘sensor blocks’.""

Waldorf Rack Attack • Drum Machine / FM Synthesizer Module SN

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Oh, boy.. this is one heck of a synthesizer.

Basically it’s a full-blown Micro-Q (2x25 oscillators, 25 part multitimbral) with a built-in step sequencer, and all the samples that were in the Roland 808/909 synths (cymbals). [Per Waldorf: "The RackAttack's virtual modeled circuitry synthesis is optimized for drums and percussion."] So it’s capable of emulating all the classic drum machines, (the Simmons is immaculate, plus there are unlikely ones in here like a Casio, some other 8-bits, of course all the old Roland kits..) and also extra capable of producing super far out and excellent modern, custom, wild kits. Plus it functions as a normal analogue modeling synth, not just a drum synth. Making basses, leads, pads, sound effects, whatever.. totally possible and really pretty simple. Same as any other Waldorf Q series.. maybe even easier, especially if you want crazy sounds. You can make it do one random sound, or an entire random program set, then play around and fine tune the results, all without overwriting the program you’re in until you’re ready to, the edit buffer is huge. Copy and paste sounds from any kit into any other kit.. get some FM noise and tweak it with the LFOs.. Oh, baby. Yes.

2 full and separate effects units are present. Includes a bit cruncher that can decimate any patch down to chiptune resolution — that’s really cool. Plus all the normal stuff, reverbs, chorus, flanger, phaser, distortion/overdrive, clock sync delays.. it’s all here in duplicate.

The FM on the oscillators is just sick. Not sure how else to describe it. It’s the key to producing drum sounds using analogue oscillators. The manual explains this in great detail, how they recreated the emulations of drums from the 80s. Crossing FM on 2 oscillators with any of the waveforms produces insane results. Making sounds that scream and cut through a mix is cake. Plus it has the Waldorf randomizer function that you can activate anywhere, any time to get a random patch generated.. it just turns every parameter at random, usually producing some jaw dropping or ear splitting tone. Use with caution! lol

So, yeah. We have 1 stereo input (to run anything through the filters and effects) and 6 programmable outs.. 1/4” of course, this isn’t a toy. Headphone jack on the front panel. MIDI in/out/thru. 12v power supply included. I have both the original German 220v and the original German 110v adapters, depending where it’s going, I’ll ship the appropriate one. I also have the original spiral bound manual (English version) which you’ll also get.

Let’s talk about the knobs on this, because it’s important: they are self-cleaning digital encoders, NOT potentiometers. So if they get janky, NEVER DO ANYTHING BUT TWIST THEM UNTIL THEY WORK SMOOTHLY AGAIN!! I see people buying and selling the Q series encoders on eBay all the time because they got antsy and sprayed contact cleaner in there and killed them. Don’t do that. Just twist them for maybe 30 seconds in each direction until you see a normal movement of the values on the screen. Also.. very sorry.. one of the knobs on this one went missing. But they’re easy to move around, I’ve always kept it clean, I normally leave knob 2 under the LCD screen as the absent one because I rarely touch it anyway. Replacing all the knobs with originals (there are some listed on this site right now) is just as easy as finding alternate knobs to slide on the encoders.. that’s if having one absent really bothers you.. personally, it never bothered me, neither cosmetically nor in programming / playing it. This is the only flaw on this unit, outside of that it looks and functions like the day I opened the box from Waldorf HQ in Germany.

I guess it’s highly coveted because it has the companion Waldorf Attack VST software to make programs in, then use this unit with its 6 outputs to slam the beats in a live or studio rig. Yes, you can completely program it using the interface with no computer. Of course. But people seem to like having that extra VST option (it is really cool). Look around forums, you’ll find people sharing kits for this going back to 2003. Chances are if you’re reading this, you already know exactly what it is and why you want it."

The History Behind the History of Synthesizers: A talk by Tom Whitwell, Music Thing

Published on Jan 11, 2018 mylarmelodies

"Recorded at the CV FREQS event in London, I was excited to be given permission to film the fantastic Tom Whitwell of Music Thing Modular, giving a history lesson on the emergence of technologies that led to the inception of modern synthesizers in the twentieth century (and beyond!).

For more info on Tom and his projects visit:
http://www.musicthing.co.uk/"

Some interesting bits from a reliable source that worked with him:

"Don Buchla worked with NASA in the very early 60s fresh out of school. After this he worked designing optical detection systems for the blind.  In 1965 after meeting Mort and Ramon at the San Francisco Tape Music Centre in 1964, work began on the Buchla 100. The acid trips were in late Jan 1966 and it was around this time that he began to take orders from other people in the scene (Kesey, Owsley etc).    There was a small buchla mixer on Further later in the 60s, more than likely used on the trip to woodstock in 69 and not the earlier trip in 1964."

Also: The Kesey box wasn’t on the original bus, but was put on around 1967 or later.. Not the famous one that preceded it by years. The guy playing the Buchla might actually be Ramon Sender.

Waldorf Demos with Saga's Jim Gilmour at the Frankfurt Musikmesse in 1992

Saga - Jim Gilmour Demo - Musikmesse Frankfurt 1993 1992 Published on May 12, 2013 MadSevenFilms

"Jim Gilmour ( Saga keyboardist) in a demo at the Waldorf stand during the musikmesse in Germany.
Humble Stance, Wind Him up, Don't be late, Careful where you step, On the loose, etc ...."

Update: according the swissdoc, these videos are actually from 1992. That would make the appearance of the prototype Wave in 1992, not 1993. This post has been updated to reflect that. Note swissdoc's write-ups are from 1993 as you can see in the datestamps for the links, and I believe the production model Wave was indeed released in 1993.

Here's a blast from the past featuring a bit of Waldorf history in via swissdoc. This may very well be the only Waldorf footage from the event. Check out the non-working prototype of the Waldorf Wave in the background. 1992 was the year it made its first appearance to be released in 1993. Note the Microwave rack was released earlier in 1989. Further below you will find some notes on Musikmesse 1993 (the following year after these videos) from swissdoc, followed by a transcription of the Wave flyer. This is a fascinating look back on synth history. But first, one more video from the 1992 Musikmesse.

Update2 via swissdoc: "In addition, for those who can read and understand German, there is a big series of three articles available for download (email has to be provided) from the German Keyboards magazine. Inside Wave. Amazing level of detail plus in part three an interview with developers and users plus additional interviews with the people behind the Wave.

Saga - Jim Gilmour Scratching the surface - Musikmesse Frankfurt 1993 1992

Published on May 13, 2013 MadSevenFilms

"Jim Gilmour ( Saga keyboardist) in a demo at the Waldorf stand during the musikmesse in Germany.
Scratching the surface"

The following is a Musikmesse 1993 recap via swissdoc aka George Mueller, who attended, from way back in 1993 (you'll find a transcript of the Waldorf Wave flyer text further below). P.S. for a quick look at the gear released at the 1993 Musikmesse see here and here, both from swissdoc.

"Before I go into this Wave stuff, I'd like to tell you a little about the Frankfurt Musik Messe. Those restless gear junkies, skip the next 24 lines.

The Frankfurt International Music Fair was held for the 14th time and was attended by a record number of exhibitors: 1194 from 40 contries. So it's the leading event for the music business.

The Messe Frankfurt has 10 halls of different sizes, three of them are used by the Musik Messe. Hall 9.0 is the most interesting, it's for electronic instruments, 9.1 is for guitars and amps, 9.2 is for stage light, sound and mixers. These halls are middle in size, rows range from A to F, with booth numbers up to 90 each. Hall 8 is for acoustic instruments and publishers; it's funny, all that noise from test-playing violins, flutes and so on. This is the biggest hall, rows from A to P. The monster booth of Yamaha is in the back of this hall with all their synths, FXs and personal keyboards. So it's a long walk to Yamaha. It's a bit risky in this hall, if you enter one booth, browse thru the pages of some book, after talking to the salesman you probably lost your orientation. Hall 10.1 is reserved for grand pianos and uprights. No elctricity allowed there.

It's funny, when you change from 9.0 to 9.1, all those long haired heavy metal guys. One amp or guitar company has a Hard Rock Cafe at their booth, evertime overcrowded with guys drinking cocktails or beer.

So, here we are, the promised report on the TSI shows WAVE MUSIC DEMO and INSIDE THE WAVE.

Tr 808 vs Tr 08 - Which is better?

Published on Oct 4, 2017 soundseasy

"We were lucky enough to get our hands on a classic TR 808 and put it side by side with the new TR-08.
Now before we start a chin stroking drum machine war, let me just say that the original is the original, and no matter how good the remake is there's something magical about this big metal box with it's clunky buttons that seem more at home on a push button telephone from the 80's, rather than a ground breaking, genre spanning rhythm machine.
but the question really has more to do with whether the TR-08 can satisfy your 808 desires, without forking out close to $5000.00AUD for a second hand one!!!

The 808 we had was very well cared for, but it didn't change the fact that it's a VERY old piece of gear, unfortunately drum machines aren't like a stradivarius, they don't exactly get better with age. so there are a some crackly pots and wayward tuning issues, but I wont lie, it was a real buzz hearing an original 808 going through it's paces, and maybe if I had the $$'s I might talk myself into getting one.

The TR-08 definitely held its own though. In reality I could have spent a little more time tuning it to match the 808 (because thankfully you can with this incarnation) but I felt that it definitely possessed the same characteristics of the old classic, and so it should, it's been modeled directly, from what I would assume, is a beautifully cared for original 808 stored deep within the vaults at Roland.

In reality the TR-08 probably sounds like how most of the original 808's sounded straight out of the box.
Before the ravages of time started adding their sonic quirks into the mix. But who knows?

So in closing would I by a TR-08 as an 808 substitute? Damn right I would! It's worth every penny!

But if I win the lottery I'm heading straight to ebay to get me an original too!"

Elektron Analog RTYM

Published on Mar 18, 2017 100 Things I Do

"I have followed what Elektron do from the early days of the SID Station but, until now never played any of their instruments. I have been looking for a drum sound creation machine also for a long time, the software ones never seem to work for me very well and most hardware seem to do a very limited sound palette and be directed towards dance. After hours of research and watching many of Cookoo's awesome videos I decided on the RTYM.

I have had this box for under a week, many people talk about it being difficult to learn the Elektron work flow so In this clip and thought I would share my current progress. The first night with the box was a little hard but after that I discovered that most features I wanted to use I could figure out without reading the manual. I mostly use modified preset sounds but in future I will be more focused on sound creation. Hope you enjoy. Analog Keys hopefully in next weeks Video!"

BOSS Introduces Vocoder VO-1 Guitar Pedal

BOSS VO-1 Vocoder featuring Kai Smith

Published on Jan 19, 2016 BOSSchannel

"When you plug into the VO-1, you can literally talk, sing, and cry with your axe, taking your playing to places you never dreamed of before."

"The VO-1 Vocoder is a unique and innovative stompbox that puts the massive expressive range of the human voice in the hands of every guitarist and bassist. By vocalizing into a connected mic as you play, it’s easy to transform your tone with electronic voices, classic talk box sounds, and tons of all-new colors that are perfect for modern music styles. It’s even possible to create impressive ensemble vocal sounds without the need to connect an external mic. When you plug into the VO-1, you can literally talk, sing, and cry with your axe, taking your playing to places you never dreamed of before.

- Innovative, easy-to-use vocoder pedal powered by BOSS’ famous guitar synth technology
- Use your voice to dramatically extend the expressive range of your instrument in countless ways
- Vintage mode for classic electronic synth-voice sounds and Advanced mode for all-new vocoder tones with enhanced clarity
- Talk Box mode enables “talking lead guitar” tones without the hassles of a traditional talk box setup
- Choir mode for achieving rich vocal sounds with no mic connected
- Effect loop for sound enhancement and easy integration with existing pedals
- Works with guitar, bass, or any instrument with a 1/4-inch output
- BOSS five-year warranty

Powerful Vocal Expression for Guitar and Bass

Without a doubt, the human voice is the most expressive instrument there is, capable of producing a massive range of sounds. Vocoder technology lets you harness this power and control the tone of your instrument in endless ways via real-time vocal manipulation, achieving speech-like sounds, infinitely controllable wah, and much more. For decades, keyboardists have used vocoders to create electronic vocal tones and other voice-like textures with synthesizers. Now, the VO-1 makes it simple for guitarists and bassists to use this inspiring creative tool with their music.

Cutting-Edge Vocoder Technology in a Compact Stompbox

Driven by BOSS’ famous guitar synth technology, the VO-1 delivers power and versatility that goes well beyond other vocoders. Vintage mode produces the familiar synthesized voice sounds heard on numerous pop and electronic music records through the years, while Advanced mode utilizes new BOSS tech to translate speech and other vocalizations to your axe with unprecedented definition and clarity. Talk Box mode recreates classic 'talking lead guitar' tones without having to use a traditional talk box rig and mouth tube, making these cool sounds much more accessible and convenient. Finally, Choir mode produces rich, impressive vocal textures from a direct input, with no mic needed.

Infinite Possibilities Made Easy

With the VO-1, BOSS has made the vocoder straightforward and incredibly simple to use. First off, it connects to your rig like any other pedal. The only additional connection needed is a microphone, which you’ll use to drive the VO-1’s vocoder engine when using the first three modes. After that, just turn on the effect, tweak the knobs, and vocalize into the mic as you play. Don’t worry—you don’t even need to be able to sing in tune. You handle all the pitch control with your hands as normal, while the VO-1 applies the complex formant characteristics of your voice to the tone in real time. The VO-1 also features an effect loop for patching in external effects, plus a Blend knob for mixing vocoder and straight tones together."

Happy New Year everyone!

I want to start by thanking everyone that comes to MATRIXSYNTH and helps make it what it is - the readers, the supporters, and of course all the sponsors on the right.

THANK YOU and have a GREAT 2015!!!

This site is a labor of love and a ton of work. This site is ultimately meant to be an testament to everything synth in the making. We have over nine years of daily synth history captured here, 119,983 published posts. I can't wait to see what the future brings us in 2015!

That said, here are a few interesting bits from 2014 in the longest post of the year. ;)
