NAMM: Behringer Introduces Three Monster iPad Mixers

"Behringer Introduces Revolutionary iPad Mixers XENYX iX3242USB, iX2442USB and iX1642USB

Three Premium Small Format Mixers with iPad® Docking Station Expand the Renowned XENYX Series

January 18, 2012 Bothell, WA – Just in time for the 2012 NAMM Show, BEHRINGER unveils three small format premium mixers that directly interface with the ever-popular iPad. Drawing on the power of the most ubiquitous mobile digital device, the XENYX iX Series mixers are designed to handle live performance and provide state-of-the-art tools to create professional recordings. Users can also sync performances to video by utilizing the iPad‘s video out capability.

The new XENYX iX Series, which include the XENYX iX3242USB, iX2442USB and iX1642USB, feature a built-in iPad docking station designed to send signal to and from the iPad with a wide range of routing options.

The innovative feature set included in the new XENYX iX Series USB mixers makes it possible to record and mix on a professional level thanks to the built-in, stereo USB audio interface. Connect these mixers directly to a PC or Mac computer via a single USB cable to record any signal source connected to the mixer.

All iX mixers include the new dual-engine KLARK-TEKNIK FX processor with 32 editable, studio-grade presets such as reverb, chorus, flange, delay, pitch shifter and multi-effects. In addition to literally thousands of apps, the iX mixers use the iPad to control the new KLARK-TEKNIK FX Processor App, enhancing the mix by allowing the user deep control of EQ’s, compressors and reverbs and a full spectrum analyzer.

The iX series mixers also feature high performance XENYX mic pre amps, which represent a major step in the evolution of audio technology. Comparable to far more expensive, stand-alone mic preamps, XENYX preamps offer a staggering 130 dB of dynamic range, with a bandwidth that extends from below 10 Hz to 200 kHz for transparent, crystal-clear performance.

XENYX mixers’ 3-band channel EQ is based on the same circuitry used in British consoles that allows users to create signals with incredible warmth and detailed musical character. Additionally, “one-knob” compression is available on all mono channels. Dial in the perfect amount of compression for instruments and vocals, creating powerful mixes with punch and clarity.

'The new XENYX iX mixers demonstrate the innovation that stems from our massive investment in Research and Development,' says Mark Wilder, VP of Marketing Communications. 'These are the first of many more ground-breaking products to be announced at NAMM 2012.'"

Not technically synth, but curious what the integration might support.

"Meek FM
Typographic Synthesizer

by Rob Meek and Frank Müller

We had the chance (and honor!) to exhibit the typographic snythesizer Meek FM developed by Rob Meek and Frank Müller. The combination of a custom built hardware controller and software generates new shapes and sounds out of pre-installed typeface vectors.

Like a real musical synthesizer the Meek FM can shape and modify forms (+ sounds) with several parameters. This device shows that there are still a lot of untouched possibilies in realtime graphical instruments.

Three more pics added to the main Arturia MiniBrute post here.

Update: hi-res scans of the flyers added as well.

Doepfer's MOGLI Nintendo Power Glove Controller

via PatchPierre.Net where you'll find the full post including more pics. A few excerpts:

"In 1993 Doepfer presented the Mogli MIDI Data Glove Controller, an alternative controller device that was based on a Nintendo Power Glove controller. It had traditional NES controller buttons on the forearm as well as a program button and buttons labeled 0-9."

"The unit was available from March 93 until December 1995, but Doepfer had to stop the production because the Nintendo Power Glove was no longer available. Around 350 units were made in total. Interesting fact is that the Mogli was also used ) by Kraftwerk (on 'Pocket Calculator' and 'Music Non Stop') during their concert at the Brucknerhaus in Linz/Austria on the occasion of the ARS Electronica Festival for Art, Technology and Society in 1993."

"However, i do think we will see some kind of gesture-control-trend coming up this year with the recently announced Kinect motion sensing input device by Microsoft, that was already available for the X-Box platform but that will soon be available for the Windows platform too."

Buchla's Model 222e MULTI DIMENSIONAL KINESTHETIC INPUT PORT comes to mind. It includes a "trigonometric detection of 2 wireless rings provides spatial information in three dimensions, with additional data provided by ring-mounted switches. Charging of the rings is accomplished by plugging them into powered USB sockets."

Oberheim OBX 6 Voice SN 806508

via this auction on eBay Austria.

"In 1978 Oberheim presented the OBX polyphonic synthesizer.

It has a very organic, warm and powerful sound, much richer than it’s later versions, OBXa and OB8. This is probably because of it’s discrete circuitry design of the voiceboards, only the ENV’s were made with Curtis CEM3310 IC’s.

The OBX is probably one of the best sounding analog synths ever made, the sound is very close to the legendary Oberheim SEM.

This particular instrument has been restored by the previous owner and a lot of the typical OBX problems have been solved.
Power supply caps and most of all other caps have been changed, some of the trimmers and molex connectors overworked, cleaned and checked.

It also has been upgraded with an Encore Midi Upgrade (In, Out, Thru). The Midi kit is not available at Encore electronics anymore..."

SOPA PIPA POST

There's a post title for you. I wasn't sure if I was going to put a main post up on the blackout or just have the splash screen. I was putting up the video below and decided a main post would be a good idea.  It will archive my message and any others from the synth community that come in.  If you have a site with a message on SOPA and PIPA, feel free to comment or email it in at matrixsynth at gmail.com.  I'll add it to the list below.

Here's my message from the front page flash screen with searchable text and links for the archives (screenshot to the left):

"MATRIXSYNTH Shuts Down? It could happen.

January 18 is the Internet Blackout day in protest of SOPA and PIPA. If you think they do not affect you, think again. If you are not familiar with SOPA and PIPA, see the video here: http://www.fightforthefuture.org/pipa.

"The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill."

Think about that. Simply linking to another site or embedding a piece of work containing copyright material could result in your internet presence being taken down. Watch the video. Think about all the demos featured here. Think about your music and your Internet presence. Demo a new piece of gear using a clip of copyrighted music, and not only is it gone, but your entire site or account is gone.

MATRIXSYNTH will stay open today, but please do think about the impact SOPA and PIPA could have on you. Also see this article on Wikipedia. You can sign a petition minus your address on Google here.

NAMM: The RapcoHorizon I-JAM 3-N-1 Box

"THE RAPCOHORIZON COMPANY SHOWCASES
i-JAM 3-n-1 AT THE 2012 NAMM SHOW

ANAHEIM, CA, JANUARY 19, 2012 ― The RapcoHorizon Company, a leading manufacturer of audio/video interfacing and cable equipment, is exhibiting the i-JAM 3-n-1 Smart Phone Interface at the 2012 NAMM Show (Booth 4558, Hall C). The i-JAM 3-n-1 is a three-in-one smart phone solution, ideal for every electric instrument player. In addition to its ability to interface with iPhone apps, such as recording and instructional play software, the i-JAM 3-n-1 also features a built-in amplifier and MP3 play along practice device.

Similar to the company’s i-BLOX, the i-JAM 3-n-1 serves as an audio interface that connects an instrument to iPhone applications. What’s different is that the built-in amplifier affords electronic musicians the ability to render the amplification of their instruments without additional equipment. The MP3 play along feature is also the perfect application for early learners to get their footing.

“Our customers were really excited about the i-JAM 3-n-1’s features when we first exhibited it at last year’s NAMM Show,” says Lucas McCulley, marketing specialist for The RapcoHorizon Company. “For musicians on the go, the i-JAM 3-n-1 has proven to be must-have piece of gear as it combines three interfacing solutions into a singular, portable device.”
To use the built-in amplifier, musicians can simply plug their instrument into the input and connect their basic speakers or headphones to the output jack, turn the interface on and jam away. The integrated circuitry and design of the box provides low noise operations and ensures a rich, clean, smooth sound. The practice amplifier does not require an amplification application but players are welcome to use one of their choosing.

Musicians can also use the built-in amplifier simultaneously with any MP3 player, for practice or small impromptu performances. By connecting their instrument, small speakers or headphones and an MP3 output device, users can play along with their favorite tracked music – whether it is their original work or a song by their favorite artist.

“For on-the-spot auditions, the i-JAM 3-n-1 is a great tool for local artists,” continues McCulley. “Ideal for players novice to expert, it’s an excellent tool to teach or be taught.”

As the most recent addition to The RapcoHorizon Company’s iPhone interfaces, the i-JAM 3-n-1 boasts a sleek aluminum design ready for any wear and tear. An added belt clip allows musicians to safely secure the box to their side, providing maximum portability. The interface operates off a 9Volt easily replaceable battery, which allows for extended play time.

The RapcoHorizon Company, located in Jackson, Missouri, is one of the world’s largest manufacturers and suppliers of audio, video, home theater, data and telecommunications cable in both bulk wire and assemblies. Used worldwide by concert touring sound companies, video and sound contractors, recording studios, system integrators, audiophiles and musicians, The RapcoHorizon Company’s products provide optimal flexibility and premium performance. The company’s state-of-the-art Custom Shop can modify existing products or build new devices to meet any need. For more information, please visit The RapcoHorizon Company’s Web site at www.rapcohorizon.com."

Buchla Swinging and Generating Triplets

YouTube Uploaded by dkimcg on Jan 17, 2012

"the 1/4 note sound and the swinging triplet playing sound generated from the same 1/4 note pulse. Based on DougCL's swinging clock tip as demonstrated by 7thDanSound. [this post]

Not a musical statement, mainly a study in swinging and triplets generated from a simple pulse.

I knew you could make triplets without a standard 1/3 divider.
And I thought it was pretty cool to be able to sequence swing and triplets from the 250e. :D

Only problem is I still can't figure out how to keep a tempo and swing a note before the clock without faking it by swinging the previous note way late to fake the early note w/o patching the pendulum's tempo with a quick negative modulation and syncing the pendulum to a master midi clock. Any ideas, if that makes sense?"

Note the SynthStation49 was announced at NAMM last year. The SynthStation25 has been available for some time as you can find on eBay here. Note the iPad 3 is rumored to be coming as soon as February and if not, definitely sometime this year. Apple keeps the design under wraps, so we won't know if this will work out of the box with it. If not, hopefully Akai will provide an adapter like Alesis did with the IO Dock.

Portable, velocity-sensitive keyboard with pitch and modulation wheels
Nine velocity-sensitive MPC-style drum pads which light when triggered
Dedicated transport control buttons including Play, Pause and Record
Play MIDI keyboard and drum pad performances into an iPad via CoreMIDI or AkaiConnect apps

Dock, power and position the iPad perfectly using the adjustable-angled cradle, or establish commanding control over your favorite computer software using SynthStation49‘s USB/MIDI port. Professional ¼” outputs and extreme portability ensure you’ll be able to take your sequences straight to the stage at a moments notice.

SynthStation49 is the only full-featured, professional keyboard controller allowing direct MIDI performance recording onto an iPad. Bridging Akai Professional’s popular MPK controllers with the previously released SynthStation25, SynthStation49 provides immense software control with forty-nine, full-size velocity-sensitive keys, nine backlit MPC-style drum pads and full transport buttons. An adjustable-angled dock for iPad allows the user to easily slide their tablet into the SynthStation49’s cradle and position the screen to their preference.

SynthStation49’s keyboard, pitch/modulation wheels and sustain pedal input provide great feel and the essential controls for musicians and producers to compose, record and perform. The nine drum pads of SynthStation49 give users immediate, intuitive beat-creation capabilities over the 50 classic and modern kits available within the SynthStation software. Program, Sequence, Song select and Transport buttons also provide quick navigation to the SynthStation App’s most used components for a seamless, efficient workflow.

SynthStation49 also contains a stereo pair of professional ¼” TRS outputs with volume knob for easy connecting to other pro audio equipment on stage or in the studio. A headphone output also lets users practice and compose in private. The SynthStation49’s USB port can be connected directly to a Mac or PC computer to receive power in addition to transmitting MIDI to and from music software – a great way to turn the SynthStation App or other CoreMIDI compatible App into a sound module. You can even use SynthStation49 as a traditional USB MIDI controller with your computer - no iPad required!

AkaiConnect SDK allows third-party developers to take advantage of all the professional controls and capabilities of Akai Pro’s SynthStation49 keyboard controller and incorporate support for those controls within their iPad applications. Software developers interested in creating programs compatible with SynthStation49 can submit an application now at SynthStationApp.com.

NAMM: Three New Controllers from Alesis

"ALESIS ANNOUNCES THREE NEW USB MIDI KEYBOARD CONTROLLERS: Q61, QX61 AND QX25
New controllers bring together combinations of keys, pads, knobs and faders with something to inspire the creativity of nearly any musician.

Cumberland, R.I. (Jan. 19, 2012) – Alesis, maker of tools and instruments for today’s music makers, introduces the Q61, QX61 and QX25 USB MIDI keyboard controllers. Alesis will unveil the trio of new controllers at booth #6400 of the 2012 NAMM Show from January 19-22 in Anaheim, California.

The Q-series USB MIDI controllers are the no-nonsense way to add expressive MIDI control to any production or performance. Each controller features USB MIDI for easy connection to Mac, PC, iOS devices* and traditional MIDI hardware modules, samplers and synthesizers.

The Q61 is a 61-note keyboard controller that works with virtually any music software and MIDI hardware devices. With velocity-sensitive keys, the Q61 offers a five-octave range of expression in a sleek, portable controller, built for the studio or stage. A full array of essential controls is onboard, including pitch and modulation wheels, octave up and down buttons, an assignable data slider, and the ability to send program changes from the keys.

The QX25 and QX61 are 25-note and 61-note keyboard controllers, respectively, that deliver powerful tactile control over any parameter of any favorite music software. Both controllers enable musicians to punch out a drumbeat on great-feeling pads, open up a filter with smooth, tight knobs, or adjust volume and playback of sequencing software with long faders and snappy buttons. The QX25 and QX61 bring immense parameter control and velocity-sensitive keyboards that get the composer’s hands off of the mouse and into the action for a more efficient, visceral music-making experience.

Whether someone is looking to trigger drum samples, tweak a software synthesizer or adjust individual tracks in a mix, the QX25 and QX61's extensive layouts ensure appropriate feel and proper response thanks to their eight sliders and rotary knobs, four backlit drum pads and dedicated transport controls.

“What began with the Q49 has now grown into a family of controllers with sizes and configurations for any musician to capture their performances,” said Dan Radin, Product Manager, Alesis. “Whether you need the simplicity of the Q61, the power of the QX61 or the compact punch of the QX25, there’s a perfect Q-Series companion for every musician.”
