"FROM THE INTERNET:
In the 1980s two other popular brands were the Echo II (slot-based) and Cricket (for the modem port on the IIc) synthesizers, made by Street Electronics. These latter also included the ability to produce a robotic voice, a female voice, sound effects, and stereo music. Some games released at the time had enhanced sound output when one of these two devices were detected. For speech reproduction, they used a method of accepting ASCII text from the computer in the form of “phonemes” to describe and produce voice through a built-in speaker. They used this approach because English words have a variety of pronunciation depending on their context. Properly programmed, the voice synthesizers could pronounce the word “root” to rhyme with either “boot” or “foot”. It wasn't until the IIGS came out with the built-in capability of speech reproduction (via the Ensoniq chip) that software making use of that feature became available in any quantity."

"Here is a very nice looking Poly-Sequencer model 1005. It is the sequencer that I understand goes with the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 synthesizer. Also included is an original Sequential Circuits Pedal which doesn't look as nice as the sequencer due to missing paint and rust. Serial number for the sequencer is 1005-0038..."

"This mini synth expander has the same controls as the synth part of Rolands famous MC-202, which is virtually identical to the SH-101, less waveform selection of the mod source. There is a nice audio mixer thrown in to add up to two external instruments, sadly, after the filter. The VCA is switchable between linear and exponential mode, and has a CV in for controlling it from an outside source (ie, I've mapped velocity from my MIDI keyboard, thru a MIDI-CV box to control the CMU's volume). This is a surprisingly strong sounding box."  Note there is no MIDI in.  You need CV to control it.

Overview

Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers Synthesizer Block Overview
Wired for instant access to classic tones without needing a single patch cable, the Synthesizer Block is a complete semi-modular monophonic synthesizer. The Synthesizer Block is 100% analog and 100% eurorack compatible with a complete set of patch points able to override the internal audio and CV signal path.

The Synthesizer Block was designed to be the core of any modular system. Each major component is fully patchable and can function independent to the rest of the module. This allows the functionality of the Oscillator, Filter, LFO, Envelope Generator and VCA to be broken apart and used like standalone modules."

The EMW200/300, small format Mackie mixer , and effects pedals by Electro Harmonix, Line 6, Strymon and two Korg Kaoss pads. The warty cymbal has a pickup on it and is being processed by pedals and one Kaoss pad. The reverb spring that is just off camera is running through the other Kaoss pad. The EMW is being processed by a Line 6 POD that is being controlled with a foot pedal."

This is just an experiment. I was listening to Telefon Tel Aviv recently... and i wanted to give it a try to achieve a similar glitch effect. Not sure i made it... but at least i had fun. No computer was used, aside a multiband compressor on Premiere. Everything is played live. Machinedrum goes into Nord Modular G2 where i used a patch i programmed with 8 delays, for the glitch effect.

The synth-funk unit Midnight Star scored several times on the charts during the mid-'80s, led by their double-platinum album No Parking on the Dance Floor in 1983. Just one of the successful acts on Solar Records (also including Shalamar, Lakeside, and the Whispers), the group was formed in 1976 at Kentucky State University by the Calloway brothers, trumpeter Reginald, and trombone player Vincent, with vocalist Belinda Lipscomb. After signing with RCA near the turn of the decade, Midnight Star recorded their first album in 1980, The Beginning, with a conglomeration of studio players and producers. After moving to the Solar label by 1982, the group released Victory and then added a full band: guitarist Melvin Gentry, bassist Kenneth Gant, drummer Bobby Lovelace, and keyboard player Bo Watson.

Though the Calloways' production skills -- later used to full effect on tracks by Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, and Teddy Pendergrass -- had pushed Midnight Star into the R&B charts during 1981-1982, with singles like "Hot Spot" and "I've Been Watching You," the group was unprepared for the success of the first single from their third proper album, No Parking on the Dance Floor. "Freak-a-Zoid" hit number two on the R&B charts in mid-1983, and though it failed to make the pop Top 40, it pushed the LP over the platinum mark. "Operator," the first single from their next album, Planetary Invasion, became their highest-charting single, making number 18 on the pop charts. By 1986, Headlines had become Midnight Star's third album to at least sell gold, but it proved their last; both Reginald and Vincent left the group to form Calloway in 1988. (Incidentally, the Calloways had introduced future legend Babyface to Solar executives for his first job, and produced Babyface's group the Deele).

Without Reginald and Vincent Calloway to lead the way, Midnight Star fell fast and far. A 1988 self-titled album flopped, and 1990's Work It Out proved to be their last until 2002's 15th Avenue. Since then, the members continued outside collaborations, but they also came together for frequent touring. As late as 2007, the group's lineup featured Lipscomb, Gentry, Watson, Lovelace, and Gant. As Calloway, the Calloways found success with their first single, 1989's "I Wanna Be Rich," which hit number two on the pop charts. The track was their only major hit, followed by "Sir Lancelot" and the title track from their 1990 debut album, All the Way. Calloway returned two years later with Let's Get Smooth, but the album proved their last. The brothers continued working, with Pieces of a Dream and Bootsy Collins, among others."

I had a report that the YouTube videos on the site are not playing for some in IE. It turns out it is due to IE being run in compatibility mode. If you turn it off the videos should come up fine. YouTube has two embed codes available the new embed code that supports HTML5 and the old that is Flash only. iOS does not support Flash so I've been using the newer code. It looks like IE in compatibility mode does not play well with the newer code.

ArcWave Reaktor Ensemble

Published on Jun 20, 2013 David Anthony Hickman·4 videos

"ArcWave is a granular re-synthesiser for Native Instruments Reaktor that uses samples in place of oscillators allowing very diverse waveform generation from virtually any conceivable sound source.

The Demo Track "UnderWater ArcLight" was improvised live using ArcWave, no other synths, effects or sounds have been used.

The track was recorded in Logic on a MacBook Pro and uses only 9 patches.

Each part was independently bounced down before playing the next, leaving 9 recorded audio tracks at the mixing stage, two of the tracks had a small amount of EQ cut at about 500 Hz to remove some of the energy, plus a bit of automation was then used to control the track levels.

The finished mix was then bounced through a 5 band compressor in Logic to produce the 24bit master, no post processing has been added."

To stop and start the video click anywhere on the screen. To hear audio click on the speaker icon on the top left. It's a five second video loop that will play until you either scroll down or manually stop it.

I haven't jumped on the Vine bandwagon yet for posts as five seconds isn't much, but I thought this one deserved a post. It's an interesting part of synth history as it is part of the Make Noise Records Shared System releases and a preview of Surachai's (of TRASH_AUDIO) upcoming release on the system. It is also kind of cool to see the routing of the patch scroll by. This is the first post with a Vine embed so there's that as well. :)
