Non Sewing Machine ROLAND SH-5 ANALOG MONOSYNTH!

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"No its not a sewing machine..This is a classic Roland SH5 synth, no question its Roland's best integrated analog monosynth. Probably most similar to having a system 100 with a nice size keyboard in a 'portable' stage instrument. You have most of the features of the system 100, It sounds very similar, but 'patching' is more limited and done with switches instead of cords. The mixer section has a switch matrix where you can route individual sources to one or more the different filters (there are 2), directly to the vca etc. So you could, for example, have oscillator 1 going though a lowpass filter, the ring mod going though no filter, and white noise going though the bandpass filter.

The bandpass filter is everybit as good as people say it is, and is totally unique sounding. The closest thing I have heard to it is the arp 2500 multimode filter. if you've never used an sh-5 before you're first 30 minutes will be spent tweaking the bandpass filter in awe. Other notable strengths are the sample and hold which can sample any waveform, and the very 70s sounding ring modulator with external input. The pitch bender is also very nicely calibrated, when set to 'fourths' it has just the right about of bend for funky expressive lead playing.

The synth functions great, and sounds incredible, its very stable tuning wise right from startup. The sliders and pots on these synths are an absolute joy to use, they have just the right amount of resistance, smooth silky movement and feel indestructible. These are very road worthy instruments, almost overbuilt like a minimoog D. One thing about roland manuals of this era is they need to be played consistently.. If you let it sit for 3 weeks without playing it, you are bound to get some double triggering on some notes for the first little while noodling on it.

Its in nice shape physically but there is a bit of corrosion around the pitch bender area, as seen in the photos.

The power supply was recapped about 2-3 years ago, and was fully calibrated at that time."

"The MIX module by Manhattan Analog is a very compact 3-into-1 mixer. It is primarily suitable for mixing audio signals. technical details

MIX works very clean and is suitable for mixing audio for that reason. The module is DC-coupled and mixing control voltages is no problem as well. Three signal inputs with adjustable level and one adjustable output.

The input controls have audio taper potentiometers. A jumper can change the characteristic of the output control: either a normal potentiometer or a polarizer; latter is useful to invert the phase of the audio signal or a CV."

Metasonix R-54 Mk-II

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Metasonix R-54 MK-II Supermodule TUBE VCO/VCF

Welcome to the strange new world. The R-54 MkII is the most radical, revolutionary module Metasonix ever made. It will change the way you do music synthesis. There has never been an electronic-music product like this before. Even the oddest things that Buchla And Associates or Serge Modular ever made are prosaic and dull compared to the R-54.

It uses a triode-pentode in a unique Wien-bridge circuit, to provide clean sine-wave oscillation. Using a Vactrol, the pitch of the R-54 is sweepable from less than 20 Hz to more than 5 kHz, continuously, via front-panel control or a CV input. By adjusting the waveshape/resonance control, the sinewave signal produced by the R-54 can be trimmed to less than 10% THD (depending on operating pitch)---with NONE of the problems inherent in solid-state oscillators and sine waveshapers. Because the Wien bridge contains no piecewise sine shaper or amplitude-control circuit or component. The tube itself performs that job. So the distortion products are entirely low-order, unlike the "sine waves" that solid-state VCOs or samplers produce.

Turn up the overdrive control, and the oscillator output clips the output amplifier pentode tube, for a unique soft-clipped square-wave sound. The simplicity of the R-54 will fool you--its behavior is odd and radical, and it will take you months or years to fully explore all of its quirks.

Now for the special trick. Plug an audio signal into the audio input. Instantly, the R-54 transforms from a VCO into a bandpass resonant voltage-controlled filter, with the same range as in VCO operation -- 20 Hz to 5 kHz. Its behavior and sound are unique. Again, you will be kept busy for years exploring all of its strangeness.

CV response: Hz/v. Use a suitable MIDI/CV interface, or use our R-60 interface to obtain perfect equal-tempered tuning every time. Maximum output signal, 12 v p-p Power requirement: +-12v dc, 250 mA. (All specifications are approximate and may vary from sample to sample.) Tubes used: 19KG8, 6AK5.

The Metasonix R-series of vacuum-tube modules is intended for use in any "Eurorack" standard modular synthesizer system. All R-series modules are 22HP (112mm) wide and fit in any Doepfer(tm), Analogue Systems(tm), or other compatible cabinet. They are powered entirely from the cabinet's internal +-12v dc power supplies, using Doepfer compatible 16-pin power connectors. Their circuits protrude behind the panel less than 25mm (1 inch). All vacuum tubes are NOS (new old stock) types from classic American and European manufacturers that are run very conservatively for long life, and are readily available from distributors. The tubes protrude from the panel for visibility and cooling, less than 38mm (1.5 inches), and should fit inside a Doepfer A-100 suitcase cabinet lid or into a Doepfer mini case. All audio inputs and outputs and CV inputs/outputs are 100% compatible with other synthesizer modules. Plate voltage is provided by a tiny switching supply producing clean 48v regulated at low current, which is very safe and will not injure the user. Potentiometers are top-quality Alpha RK12L types, and 3.5mm phone jacks are special Kobiconn vertical-mount types, much better quality than the cheap ones usually seen in Euro modules. Each R-module is fully protected against reverse supply voltage, overvoltage, undervoltage, or incorrect hookup to external equipment. As with all Metasonix products, the R series is totally handcrafted in Northern California, USA."

Gimmick – Semi Modular Synthesizer

http://ju-x.com/Gimmick.html

"*Gimmick* is a new synthesizer with a new synthesis method. It generates oscillator waveform by considering how many times to twist. Invented extremely by Juno Ju-X.

Uniqueness

Super simply, Gimmick oscillator lets you draw a waveform as you like. And it plays the waveform as it's drawn. No pre-recorded samples or waveforms are inside. Then, it's easy to let a pointing device to draw something freely, however in this way, most of the results just sounds no musical, boring noises, or just shaggy sounds.

Gimmick oscillator is an invention, that plays musical noises, fat'n warm sounds and seriously ill sounds by just moving handle points. If the handles are not enough counts, you can increase them up to 11 that turn it complicated enough.

An advanced FM synthesis

Gimmick got frequency modulation feature built-in that makes sounds glitter, futuristic, and spacy. Well known FM synthesizers use sine waveform, or something not so far shape form sine draws. As you know, you can draw a waveform with Gimmick oscillator, and you can use it as the carrier of FM synthesis!

Gimmick is Vital

Synthesizer needs modulations to give the sound a birth. Gimmick's modulator section is made as semi-modular type, so you have freedom of connection choices. And the modulator has been designed uniquely for Gimmick oscillator. Now you can modulate any handle points fast or slow, vertically or horizontally, cyclic or random! In result, it won't keep playing a loop of sound."

Roosevelt University Moog Restoration

via Chicago Synthesizer Repair on Facebook - click through for more pics.

"I recently executed an exclusive contract with Roosevelt University in Chicago to assess, consult, and restore this absolutely breath taking collection of Moog modular systems. The pictures don't do it justice and there are even more cabinets that I did not include in this album. These systems have a very unique heritage and have been in the possession of Roosevelt University for over 40 years. Some of these modules were built and installed by Bob Moog himself in the late 60's.

This project is under the direction of Dr. Rudy Marcozzi and Dr. Kyong Mee Choi. Dr. Choi is in charge of the project. Dr. Choi's intentions are to implement the system in her Electro-Acoustic Music Sequence classes as well as to submit works to the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival."

Vermona Filter Lancet Multimode Desktop Filter

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Filter Lancet is a compact but versatile stand-alone multimode filter for your desktop. It's the right weapon against static sound and boredom and made for any kind of audio signal.

Filter Section

The filter section itself has three modes: low-pass, high-pass and band-pass. The last one works with a slope of 12dB per octave whereas low- and high-pass are 24dB filters.
You can give the filter some extra punch with the Balls knob, known from Kick Lancet. It pushes low and high frequencies of the signal before being filtered. And of course the resonance is self-oscillating.
Other than the filter section of Mono Lancet, Filter Lancet is not based on (Moog-) cascade circuitry. It was inspired by the filters of the VERMONA M.A.R.S. respectively DAF-1 and Action Filter.

Modulation

Without modulation Filter Lanced would still be a good filter but kind of boring. So it is equipped with a LFO, an envelope generator, an envelope follower and a CV/pedal input.

The LFO has two frequency ranges and goes up to 250Hz - that's fast. At low frequencies the LFO can be re-triggered by gate- or audio signals. It has sample & hold and five waveforms: saw up and saw down, square, sine and triangle.

The envelope generator can be triggered by the input signal or an additional audio signal as well as by a gate voltage. If triggering it via gate it works as an attack-sustain-release envelope. With audio triggers its mode is attack-decay.

The envelope follower transforms the contour of the input signal into control voltages that can serve as modulation source.

LFO modulation intensity can be set separately from modulation intensity of envelope generator and envelope follower on the VCF- as well as on the VCA section.

Drive

Filter Lancet features a drive circuit right in the input section to add subtle shades of overdrive up to solid distortions.

Filter Lancet is packed with useful features. It's a great and powerful addition to any synthesizer including Mono Lancet - with or without Modular Dock. But Filter Lancet also is designed for stringed instruments. It creates standard effects like WahWah and tremolo with ease and even adds a palette of extraordinary sounds to any effect repertoire."

spunkytoofers cvu1 and hexinverter jupiter storm

Published on Oct 4, 2013 spunkytoofers·67 videos

"I've been working on a series of discrete modular systems/cases using a 4ms mini power supply system. Passing the rails via din-5 cables and any of the boxes able to be the main psu as a starter.

Originally was going to put the Jupiter Storm with a few other modules but was pretty surprised by the vast range of sounds with just a few cv sources.

The control interface box I was planning on making before was able to tightly integrate with the Jupiter Storm so I made the control box just a little bit different to acommadate the JS. The control box's main focus is track and hold voltages since I find that a very key feature to my modular experiments in general.

The box uses a selectable cv matrix interface via rotary controls with track/sample hold, pressure controls, touch rotary, external cv select in, IR sensor, LDRs, and a din-5 port for external controllers (the first made being an accelerometer on body strap-or any other one I decide to make later) The track/sample hold can use the colored buttons as triggers or use external triggers via colored switches at bottom. Built in attenuation."

Note: A little reverb added to the patch using LiquidReverb II"

Disclaimer: I almost didn't post this one due to the controversy posted here. If anyone knows of an update and it is no longer an issue, let me know.  It's a tough position to be in. Do I objectively post Blue Lantern stuff with a link to the controversy, or do I not post Blue Lantern stuff altogether? It's not possible to post every single thing out there so it's no longer a case of feeling like it has to go up simply because it is out there. I thought I'd put this up as this video does stand out as it's the first complete Blue Lantern system I've seen in video and that makes it a part of synth history, which imo trumps all else. As far as supporting Blue Lantern, that's up to you. If you have an opinion, feel free to share it.

Update: I heard from Ian Fritz and the controversy is over. Blue Lantern no longer offers the ZTVCO. That said, BL posts will resume.
