Stolen Gear - Moog Sub Phatty, Akai MPK49

"Our new (to us) van was broken into last night. In it was my brand new MOOG SubPhatty [ SN SUB04392 ] synthesizer, my main keyboard controller [ Akai MPK49 K11205024611729 ], projector and other things that are imperative for our show to happen. There were a rash of burglaries last night in the Cedar Bluff area where the van was parked. If you see any of these items on EBAY, CRAIGS LIST or at a pawn shop please let me know. The police are helping but it's really up to us to find the stolen items. I have a feeling that together we can do this. Please share this poster as much as you can-together we can accomplish more. I've tagged a few friends who have had experience with these things but tag more. Hugs. And thanks to Reenie Popawheelie for the poster: — with Bill Foster, Greg Horne, Tim Lee and 15 others."

Korg Volca Series (Where The Buffalo Roam)

Published on Feb 10, 2014 Metatron's Cube·42 videos

"This one is two Bass' and a Beats, with an Akai MPX8 for samples. Unfortunately the camera decided to not record the session. So, personal footage from driving in the snow was used( it fits with where the samples came from, "Where the Buffalo Roam (1980)"). Openshot Video Editor was used in Ubuntu for the effects and video production.

Also as added info, the car in the video is now dead/crashed ( and this is a send off of sorts), after being in a multicar pile up this past Friday. Fotunately, it kept me safe and took all the damage for the most part(several cars had even flipped and rolled!). Where the Buffalo Roam was the last thing I had seen before the accident and became the target of samples. So, on with the music!

Also new buck rogers music on que for upload(and the video worked on that one thankfully)."

A Review of KORG Gadget and it's List of Synths by Myagi

Check out the full review on Warp Academy. This was going to be a cross post review with Myagi's approval, but I opted to link to the full review and only capture the notes on each synth below as you don't see the full list often.  In short though, Gadget is Miyagi approved.  :)

"Gadget is a different beast than we’ve really seen on the iPad before. It’s not a single synth like the iMS-20 or the Arturia iMini, but rather a 'suite' of mini-instruments tied together with a fairly robust sequencer (by mobile standards anyway).

There was no skimping on this collection, with 15 total offerings. Instead of taking the approach of one instrument doing everything, the 'Gadgets' allow the entire app to function as a sort of audio swiss army knife, with specific instruments filling specific roles.

The Gadgets

London is the suite’s main percussion contribution. The samples are better than expected, bordering on excellent to be honest, and there is a good amount of dynamic optimization to make sure you can get appropriate thwack out of your main elements.

Chicago is essentially a 303-style emulator. This Gadget includes some pretty nice onboard effects as well as a built in tube overdrive simulation. A nice arpeggiator and scale selection actually allows for the rapid creation of some pretty inspired acidic hooks. I’d buy this alone as a VST/AU instrument.

Marseille is basically a sound bank of the essentials. Piano samples, string samples, etc. Really this is a utility module used to cover a lot of bases. Not the most interesting but a necessary inclusion. A built in chord function expands its repertoire a little.

Brussels is optimized for big detuned leads and is a go to for big electro-anthem style leads. Doesn’t sound bad actually, but not my bag personally as I tend to think this type of sound is pretty overused. A good amount of depth though for sure.

Kiev is a vector based synth, and for those who haven’t played with vector synths before, you’re in for a treat. They are GREAT for specially intricate drones. This guy is a lot of fun.

Phoenix - with its Oberheim style front panel, this polyphonic virtual analog is a nod to the OB-8 etc., and fills the role nicely. Big 80s style leads and chord sounds abound, and it’s not a slouch for bass sounds either.

Dublin takes us back to a familiar Korg lineage. It’s like a little second cousin to the MS-20 series, with a degree of patchability and modular style controls. Pretty deep for part of a 15 pack if I don’t saw so myself. This one will look after all your weird bleeps and bloops.

Miami I expected to dislike, but once I got over the lowest common denominator graphics and styling, I was impressed. It was bound to show up somewhere – this Gadget is the 'wobble synth' that will probably see a ton of use. Designed to help easily produce dubstep style basstones, it actually sounds pretty darn good, and the LFO sync automates REALLY well.

Tokyo is an interesting inclusion but a welcome one. It allows for some really cool adjustments on analog style percussion sounds. Think 808 style controls on pitch, etc. and you’re in the ballpark. Pretty flexible and damn if I don’t love some distorted analog toms.

Wolfsberg allows for digital control of analog style sounds. I mean – this is ALL digital control, but in this case, the analog waveforms have been optimized in a nice unit with tons of modulation capabilities and a pretty deep sound. Not one of the go-to’s per se, but a nice Gadget nonetheless and capable of some really nice sounds with its additional envelope and effects.

Berlin - now we’re getting into some interesting stuff. Designed to produce tearing hard sync leads, this is a tiny beast. Funk abounds.

Helsinki could well have just been called Boards of Canada. An ambient synth, it combines great waveforms with really nice sounding reverberations and some chipset style degradations. Melodic and deep.

Chiang Mai utilizes VPM – or Variable Phase Modulation – and is a cousin to FM in terms of sound. Great for clangourous tones and metallic elements, this Gadget works for 80s leads or even some intricate, high harmonic bass tones. Korgs work with VPM in other synths has produced a really easily workable high timbre sound source.

Amsterdam is a sort of 'dub siren' utility, full of decorative one shots and transition noises. Lots of things here that you COULD do with other modules – not my favorite but I’m sure it’ll get some use by anyone looking to produce entirely within this virtual 'box.'

Kingston is a wicked little chiptune Gadget, capable of video-game style leads and effects, and is heavy on the lo-fi digital vibes. Total essential."

The sound goes through TC D-Two preset "Phase reversed echo", EMI TG limiter and Sonnox Limiter in Logic."

F5D Clavia Nord Rack 2X quick demo

"The first sounds that I programmed with my Clavia Nord Rack 2X. The sound goes through my typical fx setup for fun. I have had this module for a couple of years, but never really got enough time for it, but now I fired it up and started tweaking! All is unquantized, played while testing / tweaking the sound."

F5D Alesis Andromeda A6 Demo V3

"A random collection of trance sounds that I programmed for Alesis Andromeda A6 synth during years 2006-2010. The focus is in the sounds, not playing. I recorded these mostly when testing the sounds, so some clips are quantised, some are not. Most sounds have TC reverb + compressor to get that trancey hall vibe."

"It has just been serviced, calibrated and PAT-tested by James Walker at Synth Repair Services. The keyboard contacts, pots and switches have been cleaned and the power supply recapped. It has been converted from 110v to 240v operation (this is easily reversible).

Dating from late 1973, this instrument is in excellent original condition - it has the early oscillator and filter boards (many of the pcbs are RA Moog boards). It comes in the original suitcase (which is missing its original foam - presumably long since deteriorated) and has a full complement of original literature: owner's manual, Tom Rhea Sound Charts booklet and unused user patch charts tear-off pad - all in excellent condition."

Light Face KORG RCA Victor Tribute M-500 Micro-Preset Vintage Analog Synth

via this auction

This isn't something you see everyday.

"Up for sale is Korg M-500 Micro-Preset vintage analog synthesizer, one of the most earliest and rarest synths Korg produced in the '70s. This one is a super rare version that Korg made under the name of Victor, which has different coloring to the genuine Korg M-500, although the synth itself are exactly the same."

I don't believe I've ever seen one of these before.  Note the RCA logo to the left of Victor. The Victor was the RCA Synthesizer.  You can watch a video on the history of The RCA Synthesizer here. Also see the RCA channel at the bottom of this post for more. Cool to see KORG pay tribute like that so many years ago.

Program Change Matrix-1000 & JX-10 Sample Packs

You'll find them at the Program Change website here.
The following are a two demos and some details captured for the post.

"800 instant, high resolution sampled instruments taken from Matrix-1000, greatest sound module of the classic Oberheim world.

Legendary synth manufacturer, Oberheim had a wonderful plan in the late eighties: they developed a relatively cheap synth module with all the analogue goodies they had at the time (yes, fine oscillators and filters), give them a MIDI control and tons of preset sounds covering every sound style their instruments ever produced.

The result was Matrix-1000, and it fulfilled all the dreams with some exceptions. Its sound was as huge as an Oberheim should have, and they let it fly with 800 preset sound programs (plus 200 rewritable memory slot). But the control was not so perfect, you cannot edit the unit itself at all, and starting an external editor was also a pain due to the very slow microprocessor Matrix-1000 had."

"145 ready-to-play, high resolution sampled instruments recorded directly from Roland’s last analog classic, JX-10 a.k.a. Super JX.

In the mid-eighties Roland produced their most perfect analog machine of all times, the JX10 synthesizer, also known as Super JX. Structurally it was equivalent of two JX-8P synthesizer packed together in a single box, with wider, 76 note keyboard – but its fans loved it way many more than any of the JX-8P user loved his own instrument.

Super JX used up 2 x 2 oscillators for every patch combination you call up from the front panel – a so-called upper and lower unit of two sound boards. This resulted so huge, fat sound which is hard to describe. And they used the company’s best oscillators, followed by an excellent high or low pass filter which wasn’t too far from the ones found in the outrunning Jupiter series.

The only Achilles point was the lame MIDI implementation – but some experienced users solved the numerous problems and released an EPROM hack which made the instrument really usable."

Eddie Harris - 'Zambezi Dance' Improv modular synth cover

Published on Feb 9, 2014 VoltageCtrlRtv·20 videos

"Jazz has always been a big influence in my life thanks to my Grandmother exposing me to it at an early age. Eddie Harris has always been one of my favorites, the 'Instant Death' LP is an incredible album from start to finish and it also holds more nostalgia because this album has been sampled by a few of my favorite HipHop artist back in the day.

This is a live one take improvised composition using my analog modular synth and the Arturia Microbrute.

For this composition I setup a complex analog modular synth patch built around the 250e patch from the MakeNoise Pressure Points / Brains manual. The bassline sequence is being generated by the Arturia Microbrute.

The Microbrute sequence is also controlling the pitch of the Harvestman Piston Honda and the envelope is being generated by the Malekko/Richter Envelator. This patch was way too busy to reverse engineer anymore of it.

"This is a rare black model. Fully functional and in great used vintage condition. Recently all 60 keys were tuned with a peterson strobe tuner. It was pretty close, now it's spot on. It has one oscillator per key and offers full polyphony (para-phonic.) See photos for condition. Has normal signs of use for a vintage instrument but is in fantastic condition for it's age. This is one of the best sounding ensemble preset synths I've ever heard. Very warm sounding, creamy filtered analog sounds. The octave coupling knob mixes in and adds a wonderful fullness to the sound. Very nice, check out the online demos of this and the similar models for a good idea what it sounds like.
