M1000X Oberheim Matrix-6/6R and Matrix-1000 Software Editor Now Available for Mac OSX

Dave Cornutt's M1000X editor for the Oberheim Matrix-6/6R and Matrix-1000 has been ported to OSX. You'll find the full details and download on Sequence 15. The post gives a good overview of the synths as well. Note the original Matrix-6 does require OS 2.13 to work with external editors.

"I've finally found the time to get Xcode going on my Mac Mini and rebuild M1000X, the program I published some years ago for doing patch editing on the Oberheim Matrix-6/6R and Matrix-1000. It now runs on Intel Macs under OSX 10.8 (it should also work under 10.9, but I have not tried it)...

Oberheim produced many of these synths, and because of the limited user interface they are regarded as less desirable than many other analog synths, so they can be had at reasonable prices. If you're looking to get into vintage analog inexpensively, this is a good way to do it -- get one of these synths, and then use M1000X to overcome the UI limitations."

- Each of the eight cards has a CEM3372. a CEM3340, and an original ROM

- Cards include: Bass, Tom, Tom, Tom, Snare, Hi Hat, Cymbal, Cymbal.

Sold as-is. The unit powers up and the brain looks to be clean but I can't get the machine to do much more. I am completely ignorant of the OS, which is a bit archaic, so that's not helping. Also, the unit is missing a few of the plastic hats/indicators that sit on the very top of the knob. The original plastic knobs are still there and the pots seem to work fine."

Sounds of Ambika

Published on Jul 11, 2014 SYNTHWAY

"Playing with combined presets in a MULTI setting. 3 voices for each sound... one is a constant beating bell-like sound, with interesting modulations, and the other is a plain lush pad sound.

My second day with the little beast and I just wanted to share why I'm so happy with it! Beautiful sounds out of this little machine!

Out of curiosity, this is a 6xSMR4 Ambika being controlled by Animoog for iPad. I can't really show any playing skills with those tiny "keys", but you can hear how it sounds, and that's what really matters.

My girlfriend was responsible for filming this (and also the next video!)..."

Sounds of Ambika - No 2

Published on Jul 11, 2014

"Again, showing a MULTI on the Ambika, controlled by Animoog. It's simply an incredible synth with lots of tonal possibilities and an amazing analog filter to go along with the digital wavetables on the osc section.

This time I'm using 3 layers: 1 with a 4-voice pad; 2 mono synth with an arpeggiated up pattern; 3 a monosynth with another arpeggio up&down pattern, available only on some keys. The sounds are more basic, but shows the other kind of sounds this amazing thing can make. I'm just scratching the surface since it's my second day with it! :)

Don't mind my playing skills with the iPad... I'm originally a piano guy and the tiny "keys" on the screen makes it difficult for me to play (I could make the keys bigger, but I would miss the range I wanted to play on).

6xSMR4 filter on this Ambika! It was build for me by Laurentide Synth Works BTW..."

Blackdeath Plague synth

Published on Jul 11, 2014 ISOTROPOSPHERE

"This is to show off my base modification I have added to the Blackdeath. The BlkDth in both versions does not come attached to a base, nor are there mounting holes in the circuit board to mount it. I asked Martin if it was OK to do this before I went ahead and performed surgery on it, I stayed clear of any circuitry. Three holes in the board, three plastic standoffs mounted to a custom cut aluminum plate, and the BlkDth secured to this assembly. The aluminum plate has the mount screws recessed underneath and is covered with a black foam mat. The top of the alum. plate visible underneath the BlkDth has been custom dyed and clearcoated to look like a plague scope smear. Custom knobs top off the piece, I did this work a few months ago but broke it out to play with in anticipation of the upcoming Dark Interpreter series.

Talk program on shortwave radio pumped through both the Blackdeath and the Modcan dual frequency shifter, separate audio tracks into the mixer. Korg ES-1 mkII additional beats.

This is noisy and chaotic stuff, you have been warned."

Smomid Robotic Instrument/Computer Stand

Published on Jul 11, 2014 nicnut210

"To make my performances easier I decided to build a light weight instrument stand. In this first version I added a robotic arm with lights and beepers. This stand comes apart and easily fits in the backseat of my car, is much lighter in weight than a normal keyboard stand, and has more surface area. There are also four high torque servos for the robotic arm. I can place my computer and interface on the lower level and my Pyramid Interface on the upper level.

In future versions I will have a midi input so the lights will be synched with what my instruments are doing, and will also have servos so that the stand itself can fold up into a smaller unit without me manually folding it up. As it is right now, other than transporting this additional item, this stand has made performing with my Smomid so much easier.

The stand has an Arduino Mega in it as well as a Servocenter 4.1 Microcontroller from YEI Technology.

The Day The Earth Stood Still 1951 - Theremin studio session.

Uploaded on Oct 17, 2010 lostinthetimes's channel

via Brett Hoyle on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge via The Playlist where you'll find a post on the piece.

Video description:
"The soundtrack was composed in August 1951 and was Bernard Herrmann's first soundtrack after he moved to Hollywood. Herrmann chose unusual instrumentation for the film: violins, cellos, and basses (all three electric), two theremin electronic instruments (played by Dr. Samuel Hoffman and Paul Shure), two Hammond organs, a large studio electric organ, three vibraphones, two glockenspiels, marimba, tam-tam, 2 bass drums, 3 sets of timpani, two pianos, celesta, two harps, 1 horn, three trumpets, three trombones, and four tubas. Unusual overdubbing and tape-reversal techniques were used, as well. 20th Century Fox later reused the Herrmann title theme in the original pilot episode for Irwin Allen's 1965 TV series Lost in Space. Danny Elfman noted The Day the Earth Stood Still's score inspired his interest in film composing, and made him a fan of Herrmann.

The Day the Earth Stood Still is a 1951 American science fiction film that tells the story of a humanoid alien visitor who comes to visit the Earth with a warning, accompanied by his powerful robot, "Gort". Robert Wise directed this film, and its leading actors and actresses were Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Sam Jaffe, and Hugh Marlowe. "Gort" is also a primary character in this motion picture, but he is portrayed as a completely mechanical man. The writer of The Day the Earth Stood Still, Edmund H. North, based his screenplay on Harry Bates's short story "Farewell to the Master" (1940).

Julian Blaustein produced this film for 20th Century Fox, and its cinematography was executed by Leo Tover. Nearly all of the action takes place in Washington, D.C., where the alien spacecraft lands, and then remains without moving for almost the entire motion picture."

Frozen Replicant = 114 yr old piano sampled then played via granular synthesis

Published on Jul 10, 2014 A Box In The Sea

"My wife and I were lucky to find this 114 year old Canadian made Bell piano in excellent condition. I played several phrases in different octaves and recorded them. I sampled those phrases into the Octatrack for editing. I pulled together my favorite and saved it for Granite (granular synthesizer) running on my laptop. The percussive elements were created by hitting the strings of the piano with a heavy fork, recording, then processing those with a convolution reverb. I'm using Push to play the percussive parts via Granite. The top row of the BRC2000 is controlling all the parameters of granite. I have the aftertouch of push controlling the release times. So a quick hit delivers a percussive sound and hit and hold allows all the modulated granular sounds to come through. Thanks for watching and feel free to ask any questions!"
