The Dude Abides - Jeff Bridges with a Yamaha CS80

What's interesting is this image was posted two years ago on imgur. Funny that it didn't meet the synth circles until now. Apparently Jeff Bridges is a photographer (note this image is towards the bottom of that post). Shopped? Answer in the comments.

Mark Mosher's It Doesn't Have To Hate Us To Use Our Molecules - Nord Lead 4 & Octatrack

All synth elements are from the Nord Lead 4 being both played lived and sequenced live via Octatrack. Video further below.

"This dark cinematic electronica song was inspired by James Barrat's book 'Our Final Invention: Artificial Intelligence and the End of the Human Era' (www.jamesbarrat.com ).

This is really a live version of the song recorded in two sessions - the first on June 4th, 2014, the second on July 19th, 2014. I first sequenced the underpinnings of the songs then rehearsed controlling the arrangement on-the-fly and playing the lead lines as well as some sound manipulation in real-time. Once I felt good about my performance, I recorded the song directly to a digital recorder (Zoom H2n). I then picked my favorite takes from each session and combined them using Ableton Live and only used light mastering FX to sweeten the mix. I made a video recording of the first session as a teaser for the release of this single which you can watch here youtu.be/IN6p9QhScKw?list=UUm36lYPbh4W464V_6XPu-ow. [below]

While at first listen, you’ll hear what appears to be repeating motifs - but if you listen back a few times you’ll hear that it’s quite an unusual arrangement in that I really mix up how the motifs are repeated and combined. I vary the lead lines in each section as well.

All synth elements are from the Nord Lead 4 which I played live on keys and sequenced live via Octatrack. I make heavy use of trig-level automation to manipulate parameters on the Nord Lead via MIDI CC messages. I also sequenced real-time automation plus manipulate the Nord on-the-fly. The Octatrack also acted as a mixer allowing me to record audio down to the digital recorder.

Video Production Notes
I used a combination of practical projection with video feedback, real-time video effects via two webcams run through visual Software Resolume, and primary footage captured with a GoPro. I then composited all the shots in video editing software with only a teeny bit of post-production to create this dark -- almost old-school analog video processing vibe.

The computers in the video are there to process and capture video from the two web cams - plus are part of the shot as a story element and for side-lighting. One is being used to project a camera in real-time over my right shoulder. This same camera is also seeing the projection which causes video feedback.

This rig is quite snappy, so all the latency between the different versions of my image are intentional introduced with the video editing software to create tension.

Yazoo - DON'T GO - Re-created w/ Sequential Circuits Pro-One Synth

Another one from Pea Hicks. Don't miss the Yazoo Only You cover, and his Yamaha CS-01 Depeche Mode covers. Click here for all posts featuring peahix.

"By special request, here's another Yaz track re-created w/ the Sequential Circuits Pro-One synth. The original actually has a fair amount of ARP 2600 in it, which means that the sounds in my version are a bit hit-and-miss, but I was able to get reasonably close with most of the sounds. My starting point for this was four patches posted at http://www.unease.se/proone.htm which I modified to get closer to the original sounds. The kick is the same patch from the Vince Clarke magazine article that I used on "Only You." All the other sounds I programmed from scratch. Everything was sequenced in Cubase, and the Pro-One sounds were recorded one at a time via a Kenton Pro Solo MIDI/CV interface.

Note that, as with 'Only You,' the original recording is actually pitched a bit sharp. I've decided to record my versions at concert pitch (A440) for the sake of keeping things standard.

The snare, clap (heavy reverb), and hi-hat (heavy flanging) are all 808. The kick and toms are Pro-One.

For the record, I don't view these re-creations as "covers" or creative projects. They're more like jigsaw puzzles to me. A way to challenge my ear, a way to find out the limits of my limited gear, and a way to try to get into the head of musicians/producers I admire. Otherwise, they're relatively pointless and aren't meant to be creative statements in and of themselves.

Here you can download my midi file and patch sheets if you want to have a go and make your own version. Just let me know and give me a mention if you post your version anywhere. https://www.dropbox.com/s/s5342gtfi6o...

Moog Music Announces Plans For Moogfest As A Biennial Event

"Today, Moog Music announces that Moogfest will be biennial, with the next event scheduled for 2016.

Moogfest 2014 was a reboot of the festival, with much of the planning and execution taking place inside the Moog headquarters, just upstairs from where the synthesizers are designed and built by hand. Engineering a production of this scale is a process that can’t be mass-produced, much like Moog synthesizers themselves.

The decision to produce Moogfest biennially is in an effort to maintain the authenticity of the event, as well as the financial and spiritual health of Moog Music and its employees, whose primary focus will always be designing and building synthesizers.

“Moogfest 2014 was a proof of concept so we could experiment with a new business, a unique format, and a new creative direction,” says Mike Adams, Moog Music Inc. President & CEO. “Producing Moogfest every other year allows us to retain the high level of innovative programming as well as the originality and independence we established in 2014.”

This new iteration of Moogfest, with Moog Music Inc. at the helm, brought thousands of musicians, inventors, engineers, futurists, ethicists, visual artists and their fans together to discuss the future of technology and creativity. It established a space for conversation and collaboration while bringing visibility to North Carolina as an international hub of new ideas. Musical performers included legends like Kraftwerk, Keith Emerson, Nile Rogers and Giorgio Moroder alongside future and current stars like M.I.A., Flying Lotus, Dan Deacon, and Factory Floor.

“This future-forward version of Moogfest is in its infancy,” says Emmy Parker, Brand Director of Moogfest and Moog. “It will take some time for it to grow, but it’s clear that people want an unadulterated ideas-based festival that combines new art, music and technology. Moogfest is a personification of the Moog ethos and we’re honored to dedicate a full two years for curating each festival, with a sustainable, long-term plan for maintaining this platform for all those who share our passion.”

As a pioneer in electronic music and the inventor of the Moog synthesizer, Bob Moog was an innovator who introduced the world to the sound of the future. Moogfest, a five-day synthesis of music, technology and art, held April 23-27 in Asheville, N.C., brought an equal ferocity of spirit to the festival that bears his name.

Gieskes HSS3 jb Video Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Hard Soft Synth 3jb is the new audio / video synthesizer by noisemaker extraordinaire, Gieskes.

It features 15 modes of audio/video excellence, each with 4-5 variables of control. There are also 8 video-only modes designed for use with the trigger and audio inputs. An adjustable analog filter keeps everything smooth (or as gnarly as you’d like).

The HSS3jb can produce all the same audio and video as the HSS3i, but it adds many more color options and controls as well as a more stable and and colorful video output.

- 15 audio+video modes and 8 video-only modes.
- Audio, IR, and trigger input as well as trigger out. IR with Handmade Music Austin or Gieskes devices,
hook it up to a modular via trigger or use the audio input to control the sounds and video of the HSS3i.
- Analog low-pass filter controlled via photocell.
- MIDI input controls device parameters.
- Circuit bending, color switching, fade, and individual color controls for video.
- New enclosure and more compact design (5.5″ x 3.5″ x 2.5″).
- Outputs NTSC and PAL

The device outputs analog RCA, S-video and VGA but only the RCA is guaranteed to work with any device it is plugged into. Some devices don’t like the peculiar VGA it produces."

Cwejman VM-1 Eurorack Voice Synthesizer Module

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The manufacturer write up is below, but this is essentially a full blown Cwejman synth in one module. The great thing is that you can either bypass the internal VCO, or plug in another sound source to mix with the VCO and use the VCA and Envelope(s) from the VM-1. It's an unbelievable module. I have since gotten some other individual Cwejman modules and do not need this one at this time. You can see it in the bottom right row of the listing photo.

Cwejman makes his modules in extremely small batches and (after some inquiries about other modules) the VM-1 is not on the current list of modules in the pipeline.

The manual is on the cwejman website.

The VM-1 is a complete voice module with an oscillator, multi mode filter, amplifier and 2 envelope generators. The OSCILLATOR can produce seven basic waveforms. The pitch is controlled manually by the 'COARSE' and 'FINE TUNE' controls, and also by the variable CV1 and CV2 inputs. The pitch CV inputs are carefully trimmed for 1 Volt/octave sensitivity.

The pulse width can be controlled by the 'PULSE WIDTH' control and by external signals inserted into variable input "PWM". The SYNC is provided by an external signal to input SYNC.

The 4-pole Multi Mode Filter consists of an audio mixer (MIX), filter and modulation controllers for cutoff, q-peak and output morph. The MIX control mixes two signals; oscillators output and external audio signal (AUDIO). The MMF is a 4-pole multi mode filter.

The low pass, band pass and high pass mode are mixed at filters output by morphing function; knob MODE MORPH and controllable by an external CV signal MORPH and outgoing level is attenuated by a voltage controlled amplifier."

"modifications include:
extreme-range pitch knob with toggle, affects note pitch and rhythm speed/pitch
1/4" line in-that's right, send signals through the unit (mp3 player, instrument, drum track etc.) and use it as an effects box or amplifier.
Photo-theremin, wave your hand over the eye and produce a range of sounds, depending on what other mods are engaged
video in and out rca ports, run a dvd player or other video sourcethrough it with the two included quality RCA cables
1/4" line out
on-board speaker toggle on/off
main volume knob
line in volume knob (less volume = more filtration through effects)
sweet orange paint job with yellow and brown keys and yellow logo, matching orange knobs
4 body contacts, some of which are ground-sensitive
key volume knob (independent of drums, also affects other mods) with toggle and momentary kill
4 tone generating switches which trigger random notes from their respective quarter of the keyboard in the selected tone, stimulated by drums, line in, etc.
8 other knobs with that do crazy things like digitally modulated distortion, stepped tonal feedback, oscillation etc. Some of these have "momentary on" buttons, all have toggles.
The 4 components to the left of the keys are linked: a feedback module with toggle on/off, momentary on button, knob for high/low frequency and a dry/wet knob.
40 added external components total

This thing is seriously wild. Lots of fun and serious recording to be had with this machine, squealing analog/digital high warbles and cascades and buzzing granular lo-fi lows. Useful stair-stepped tone generation and glitching, see video for a small sample of the range of sounds and sights that can be produced."

"Added a Doepfer A101-2 Low Pass Gate, Vactrol filter. Can be used as filter and/or a vca. Has a mode that's inspired by the Buchla 291 Low Pass module.

My modular is currently under construction, adding a third row. But adding a new row usually means changing the previous row (see as pictured). recorded live on stereo tracks, no overdubs on this one. Patch used as pictured. Keychee Beat Making Performance on Push

Published on Jul 23, 2014 Ableton

Ableton Push on eBay

"We recently came across Push ninja Keychee, whose beatmaking process can also be a performance in itself. Playing the pads expressively while dialing in automation and new instrument layers on the fly, Keychee builds up and breaks down a track in real-time, in this video recorded in one take.

This video is the first of a set of videos showing artists creating a track with Push in one take -- shot with one steady-camera in real-time.

Keychee has generously made his set from the video available as a free download. Grab it at https://www.ableton.com/en/blog/keychee-push/

VGM #12 - Map Theme (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island)

Yoshi's Island is one of my favorite games. I originally came up with the idea for this song for a competition, but I was three weeks late in getting the song done. But, I am still really happy with my arrangement, so here it is!

I really wanted to highlight the way the original built off of layering, while really making the song my own. This time I go a little more off the books, as far as the arrangement is concerned, channeling the funky fun of soul music. All while having a heck of a lot of fun with my doodads and gadgets. I hope you enjoy!

Also, I really wanted to switch things up and use my Tempest as a sequenced synth and use the analog 4 as the drummer. It was really interesting, but I gotta say, I love the live play accessibility of the Tempest. The Analog 4 is super powerful, but its mostly a device you do all of your leg work before performing. Anyways. Yeah."

Auditioning the Roland System 1 Synthesizer

Published on Jul 23, 2014 zibbybone

"Had some time to kill today, so I thought I'd check out the System 1 at my local music shop. I brought my Zoom Q4HD along and shot this short video before I was interrupted by a phone call. I did spend more time with the synth before shooting the video, but not enough to make a proper opinion. So far, it doesn't seem to do any more than my SH-01 Gaia. This particular System 1 did not have anything loaded into the 'Plug Out' section."

SynthX Demo for iPad, Another Blast From The Past

Published on Jul 22, 2014 thesoundtestroom

"SynthX is a great little synth that offers various ways to play it , lots of FX and total control over the sounds, the only downside here is that it does not support Audiobus or Inter App Audio."

SynthX is from Way Out Ware, developers of the acclaimed ARP 2600 emulation. Version 2.0 added a new "Solus" 2 oscillator per voice analog synth model. This is likely as close as you can get to having an authentic ARP synth model on the iPad.

via Oakley:

"The original and popular Oakley Filtrex design has been updated to create a new powerful filter processing unit. The Filtrex II contains:

A four pole true analogue filter. This is based on the famous transistor ladder filter developed by Dr Bob Moog in the 1960s. A front panel pot controls the filter cut-off frequency, another controls the resonance. The resonance control is configured not to cause volume drop when turned up. The filter can be made to oscillate if required.

Two filter outputs are available. One is the Fizz output. This is a type of -6dB/octave filter and it gives a unique filtering effect with a real bite. The other is the Smooth output. This is a classic -24dB/octave filter, and gives a smooth warm analogue filter sound. Each filter output goes via its own reversible attenuator. This means not only can you adjust the output level, but also the phase of the output signal. This allows complex filter shapes to be made when the two outputs are mixed together in various degrees. This includes a very nice sounding band pass filter.

A wet/dry control allows the filtered audio to be mixed with the original signal. Not only is this useful in controlling the depth of the effect, but it can also create unusual phasing and vibrato type effects.

A wide range pre-amplifier is included. You can use the Filtrex with virtually any input from guitars to synthesisers. A peak indicator will allow you to monitor overloads, although the Filtrex is designed to overdrive beautifully..."
