Madrona Labs Aalto & Soundplane.

Apologies for the super short clip on this one. Took this one from the side and the event wrapped up before I could capture a proper demo. I thought it was worth posting for historical purposes and to remind people out there about the Soundplane and Aalto, but great products from Madrona Labs. It's worth noting Madrona Labs also gave a talk at the Decibel Festival this year. Hopefully that will appear on video in time.

Line level was a little hot on this one so there's some distortion. It sounded cleaner live. Some sweat spots in this one.

"The T-Resonator is part synth, part effects unit. It's a really crazy device. The analog filters are really smooth. Use it to process an incoming signal...or just let it make it's own noises. The envelope/LFO is fantastic. Combine this with it's ability to apply feedback on itself...really a unique piece of gear."

A Conversation with Herb Deutsch Today at Queens Museum

via Queens Museum

"Herb Deutsche, the inventor of the Moog Synthesizer, joins our New New Yorkers Circuit Benders class for an afternoon Q & A and sharing of projects.

Herbert A. Deutsch is an American composer, inventor, and educator. Currently professor emeritus of electronic music and composition at Hofstra University, he is best known for co-inventing the Moog Synthesizer with Bob Moog in 1964. Deutsch has been credited with the keyboard interface of the Moog. He composed the first piece ever for the Moog (“Jazz Images – A Worksong and Blues”) and performed early Moog concerts at The Town Hall and The Museum of Modern Art in New York (1969′s Jazz in the Garden).

This event is free with Museum admission and open to the public. It will take place on the theater on the second floor."

TTSH & ARP sequencer - initial tests

Published on Sep 27, 2014 DJjondent

"The TTSH (Two Thousand Six Hundred) project is a 'clone' or retro ARP 2600.

As you can see I haven't completely finished the job but it's almost there. Sounds very very much like my vintage 2600, though there are many subtle differences in the components and in how they are put together. Zthee has done an awesome job & tried wherever possible to remain faithful to ARP's original design.

As a modern take on a classic synth it bloody good & is as close as you can get to the real thing without having to fork out 7-10K.

Plus building it has given me much pleasure and a greater appreciation for the vintage 2600.

So if you like to solder then I highly recommend you give this a go.
Here is a link to my build notes:

Sampling modular synth oscillators with E-MU E5000 & Sample Aid

Published on Sep 27, 2014 Phil Tipping

"...or how to prove emu + ocd = rsi
Looping & truncating raw VCO waveforms with no attack, decay or filtering - previous video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87TS2...) [video 2 in the playlist below] showed how to sample complete voices so no looping was reqd. These waveforms can be used for building new voices inside the E-MU or by routing them back through the modular. They were captured earlier using Sample-Aid to step through each note, so the repetitive Arm & Place button pushes are still needed, but this time no auto-truncation was used so all samples are 1 sec. long.

The example shows one of the 40 pulse-width variations (10%, 12%, 14%... 88%, 90%) taken from the pulse output. Each sample is looped & truncated to approx. 2000 samples using E-MU's auto-correlate function plus manual tweaking by ear & watching the graph. The waveforms are simple so the tweaks were fairly consistent until the lower octaves where the size had to be increased. The lower notes were also harder to judge by ear, but it was easy to spot incorrect loop points on the graph.

Sampling this way may seem overkill but it avoids all compromises... you just need patience :)
Easier options would be to only sample every few notes, and/or truncate them to a single wave cycle, but you'd need to experiment with each waveform first to avoid audible artefacts.

Background music was a quick lash-up just to show what the raw pulse waveforms sound like with no further processing apart from the E-MU voice defaults. The E-MU was set to multi mode, with a few pulse variations assigned to different channels, and driven by Sequetron."
