Korg Electribe is doing the rest.

Giving a big thumbs up to the Patterning Drum Machine iPad app. It's useful to visually see different velocity values and how they relate to each other to create really interesting percussion."

The Electronic Music Synthesizer in Mid-Twentieth-Century Science Fiction

Back on October 18, 2012 a post went up here on an article written by Nicholas C. Laudadio (of Life of Saturdays) on the role of electronic music, and electronic instruments in early Science Fiction. That article was only available to students with access to JSTOR.

Nicholas just wrote in to let us know the article is now available to everyone on academia.edu. You can find it here. Note you can scroll down to read when you get there. You do not need to login or create an account unless you want to download the PDF.

On a side note be sure to check out Life of Saturdays on Bandcamp, for Nicholas' latest release.  It's kind of cool to hear music from the author of the article.

From the article:

"'Music is born free; and to win freedom is its destiny. In the new great music, machines will also be necessary.' —Ferrurico Busoni, Sketch of a New Esthetic of Music (5)

“'The growth of musical art in any age is determined by the technological progress which parallels it.' —Joseph Schillinger, 'Electricity: A Musical Liberator' (26)

Introduction.

When the ships descend on Devil’s Tower in the climactic moments of Stephen Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), the humans greet the aliens not with tanks and howitzers as in The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), but with a simple five-note motif plucked out on an Arp 2500 electronic music synthesizer.

Atop its formidable white-and-black dais, the large modular synthesizer not only dominates the scene visually, it soon proves itself to be the most powerful tool the humans have for communicating with the alien visitors. The synth literally establishes first contact and maintains it..."

7 Minutes with an Ipad Synth - BeepBoop

Published on Dec 14, 2015 Synth Anatomy

"A strange noise-making device. A collection of blocks of signal processing that document the last few months of my meanderings, wired together to make excessive oddness. Kinda like an iOS monotron, but with the capacity for great evil.

Made from circuit models. Structurally, there's an antialiased oscillator, feeding a partially temperature-stabilised transistor-ladder VCF (which can be heated), feeding an interesting old pitch-shifter in full-feedback-fun mode.Plus an LFO for some movement, and AudioBus compatibility. Sounds vary from early Dr Who to world-ending cataclysms.

There are no presets because what you hear is determined by more than just the positions of the knobs. It's what you turned and when. There's no MIDI input because it would be entirely out of character; once you hear it, you should understand pretty quick."

New Paper Synth PS-301 Wavefolder Demonstration & Upcoming Workshop

The input waveform is saw wave.

Additional details including info on the upcoming workshop:

"In this episode of paper synthesizer workshop, we are building a diode wavefolder, that sounds a bit like a resonant filter, but has a very unique sound.

PS301 Diode Wavefolder is a dynamic waveform processor module, that changes the color and the overtones of a sound, while keeping the same base note. The design is originally Jürgen Haible's take on “Serge Wave Multiplier, middle section”. Yves Usson of YuSynth added an exponential VCA to the design, making voltage control possible, and we modified the circuit further to fit our design requirements.

The module takes in a 10VPP sine, triangle or saw wave and folds this waveform back into itself up to 7 times at the crossover point of the wave. The effect sounds a kind of mix of frequency modulation and mid resonance filtering.

The Controls Include 'CV attenuation', 'Fold Range' (which can also be contolled with 0-5v control voltage) and 'Fold Amount' which changes the amount of folds. Inputs and outputs conform to eurorack standards of 10Vpp, and it runs on eurorack +-12v power supply, and even with +15v power supply from Frack Rack or MOTM synthesizer systems.

ll the tools and materials will be provided.

The faceplate is not included!

The workshop will be held in German and English.

Material and further informations:

The costs are 60,00€ for the materials.

Theory of operation

A PS-301 Wavefolder adds overtones to a waveform, a bit like a distortion unit or a resonant filter. But instead of clipping or ringing, when the waveform peak goes over a certain limit, it folds back and creates a new odd harmonic component. Jürgen Haible had a really good explanation of the process on his site, and since its impossible to know how long the legacy site is kept up, i copy it here:

'A string of diodes is driven with the amplified and level shifted input signal. After each diode there is a “tap” with a resistor that will contribute positive or negative to the output of a two-opamp subtracting amplifier. There are two virtual GND nodes for these summing and subtracting operation. By feeding these virtual GND nodes alternately from the taps of the diode string, you can have the output voltage increased when one diode drop voltage is reached, and have the output voltage decreased again when the next diode in row starts conducting. The number of valleys and peaks is only determined by the length of the diode string, and not by the number of opamps. It turned out that choosing equal resistor values results in an almost regular pattern of the voltage transfer function.'"

Voltan Telepathy V2 for iOS and Mac

See the video for iOS posted here. The following is the press release for the official press release:

"Telepathically Integrated Synthesis Suite for iPad, iPhone & OS X Audio Unit

• After 2 years of development, VotanDSP is proud to present the next level for its
Votan Telepathy Synthesis Suite, o ering a perfect blend of traditional algorithms
and cutting edge integration.

• Votan Telepathy v2.0 presents a powerful subtractive synthesis engine, with
nothing to envy to the best hardware synthesisers.

• Cloud and control synchronisation elegantly bridge the gap between iOS and your
OS X DAW.

Votan Telepathy is a powerful synthesis engine built on top of The Votan Platform. It is available as an iOS (iPhone/iPad) app and also as an 32/64 bit Audio Unit. Users can experience Telepathy with either of these platforms alone, but when they are used together is when the real magic happens.

Telepathy iOS and Telepathy AU (Audio Unit) are seamlessly linked via The Votan Platform Cloud and Control features, o ering near zero latency control over an infinite series of Telepathy AU instances direct from the iPad touch screen. Users can create new a sound on iOS that instantly integrates into their DAW session.

A perfect blend of traditional algorithms and cutting edge integration
Votan Telepathy has a subtractive synthesis engine containing quad arrays (4x) of Oscillators, Filters, LFO's, Envelopes, and FX Blocks. These sound shaping modules are built around an 8 Slot Modulation Matrix which routes the modulators to any Telepathy Synth or FX parameter destination. Of particular delight is the free flowing nature of the Oscillator section. It unlocks the normally static oscillator frequency parameter from standard MIDI key tracking. When users switch o the Amp Envelope they have free playing waveforms at their fingertips which combined with the dual oscillator FM, o er some serious dimensions in audio rate wave modulations normally only seen on modular analogue synthesisers.

Telepathy is joy to use, be it on the way to work or whilst professionally constructing the tracks in the users favourite studio DAW. Telepathy will fill the gaps between. Everything the users build on iOS will telepathically appear in their DAW session ready to rock the next tune.

"Song for Henry" - on analog synthesizers

Published on Dec 14, 2015 organfairy

"In 1983 Danish television was trying to gain a more modern reputation and therefore they replaced the ordinary written programme presentation with an animated interlude showing a clock face that started as one round picture that had a connection to the previous show and during the one minute interlude the picture was replaced with one related to the next show.

I have tried to recreate this animation and I think it went quite well. I have used pictures of the synths that I used to play the music.

The music is the composition 'Song for Henry' that was one of the melodies that were used for the 1983 interlude. It is composed by the Danish keyboard player Kenneth Knudsen who is known for his well groomed hair and mustage - that guy was so 80's already in the early 1970's - and for his mastery of the synthesizer. He has been referred to as "the Joe Zawinul of Scandinavia" so he is a very respected musician.

I play Song for Henry on Roland SH-2000 (melody and solo), Roland JX-8P (Bass and percussive sounds), Korg Poly-800 (chords), and for the first time I play a solo on my Yamaha SY-1. So as you might have guessed I managed to repair it properly (there will be a video later)."

Published on Dec 14, 2015 mylarmelodies

"DMX Krew did a little Modular Drum synth and bass patching demo at London Modular's Modular 101 event on 13/12/15. This was in Das Kino in Hackney Wick, and god damn, you can't really appreciate it on video but that system is capable on severe amounts of low end. It sounded ace.

Especially rated his FM cymbal patch which was combined with white noise to make a separate snare patch, but with 'funky' inter-dependencies, which adds to the charm of course.

This is an Analogue Systems modular, with nothing fancy in it, just good modules patched well by a good ear."

Direct outs: for the first time after 3 impros on this instrument, I'm using external signals to modulate the Plumbutter. All sounds are coming out of the Plumbutter which is frequency modulated by the Bugbrand modular.
I added and tweaked some reverb & delay afterwards in Logic.

One take: I cut a few seconds in the video, but a few moments where the audio level is not optimal or some frequencies a bit annoying (like at 6:23 for instance) still remain. It shows the other characters of the instrument."

Direct outs / one take: all sounds are coming out of the Plumbutter. Reverb & delay added afterwards in Logic."
