Quantizer Sunset Showdown: Tiptop QuantiZer vs Intellijel uScale.

Published on Jan 7, 2017 Dudadius

"Quantizer Sundown Showdown!

I’m a longtime fan of the Intellijel uScale quantizer. It’s quirky, but if you massage it correctly, you can get some musical loveliness out of her. It’s all over my past albums.

Enter the Tiptop QuantiZer. Well, it sure is gorgeous looking! And I love the Circadian Rhythms, so let’s give her a go!

I’ll say off the bat that this is a little apples to oranges; the uScale excels at taking a CV input and outputting 2 [TWO!] quantized cv’s that you can modulate and muck with in very “interesting ways” (as Danjel might say). It’s the ability to modulate the interval degree of the B output that is really cool.

junkyard-kahrs just posted some excellent uScale tutorials which prompted me to revisit this lovely. And coincidentally it’s right when I received the Tiptop QuantiZer.

You’re dealing with just one cv in and one cv out on the Tiptop, so everything is much more straight-forward. So if it’s immediacy you want, this might be the pick. But if it’s crazy musical melody interval madness you’re after: uScale. Or…the typical Muff’s answer: BOTH.

Patch notes:

I’ve been trying to get comfortable with the Moog Mother sequencer, so that is again my source here. I just muck about with playing the ‘keyboard’ while adjusting the cv attenuation going into the uScale. Output A from that is playing an Atlantis, and depending on the attenuation, you will get varying degrees of…NOTHING or the interval you’re after. I need to understand the voltage range of the uScale a little better…

Output B is the interesting part, to me. It’s playing a Rubicon/Polaris combo, and the SHIFT amount is controlled by Planar. This essentially allows you to toss the interval relationship between A and B all over the place, but always within the scale. It’s bloody brilliant! Or ‘Ace’, as some might say.

The Tiptop QuantiZer is playing a Cwejman voice. A Qu-bit Nano Rand is getting clock and then providing random gates to a Pressure Points which in turn passes her voltages along to the QuantiZer. I programmed three chords which correspond to the general Fmi7 vibe that is happening here. This voice just bobs along in a random manner behind the other three voices.

Tiptop Z-DSP with valhalla chip and Intellijel Rainmaker provide the ‘space’. Dubmix is the mixer.

It’s all a little raw, but it was a fun exercise to use both Quantizers…"

Each instrument has 4 banks a 16 steps each and can be muted
Synthesis using 8bit wavetables
20000Hz sampling rate
Master is filtered through analog high-pass filter (2pole)
Hardware

atmega1284 @ 16MHz using Mighty1284 platform
lots of 74HC595 shift registers (for LEDs)
MCP23S17 port extenders (for buttons)
CD4067 multiplexer (for analog potis)
R2R network for D/A conversion
Some eagle files included
Lessons learned while developing

The analog inputs are quite noisy. De-noising uses quite much cpu.
Don't ever solder this much wires by hand. PCB services are your friend.
Prefer DDS over an R2R ladder.
Open bugs / flaws

Although the output is buffered by an opamp, the sound sounds distorted when using the PC's line in. If I conntect it directly to the speakers, the sound is quite clear."

Published on Jan 7, 2017 Alba Ecstasy

"A small video showing the Roland System-1 in self resonance. All oscillators has been shut off and I only juggled with the cutoff and the resonance.
In addition, I played with the:
- filter and amp envelope and
- different LFO waveforms but only to alter the filter so I can create pitch.
I added the onboard reverb and delay to flavour the sounds!
Later I added a little noise to vary the sound and in the end a opened the oscillators to hear the difference (just a little bit)."

Free Roland JX3P - Bass Sample Pack from Seaweed Factory

via Seaweed Factory

"This sample pack is the third of three in a series of packs featuring the Roland JX3P Synthesizer, released in 1983.

The third pack focuses on bass patches. It also includes a vibes patch.
The four patches included have been multisampled directly from the synthesizer. The JX3P can produce 61 notes, starting at C3 (midi note 36) on up through C8 (midi note 96). Each note had been individually sampled for an extended period of time to capture the behaviour of the built-in chorus. Samples are labelled by patch name and midi note number. Each folder contains a full set of all the sounds the JX3P can make for that patch."

"This is a 1972 Minimoog, serial number is #1442, making it the 442nd made. It was finished April of 1972. It has the plexiglass pitch and modulation wheel from the original design, before they changed to white wheels.

- It has the original Moog oscillators.

- It has had a complete overhaul. All the switches have been cleaned, the oscillators have been stabilized, and the keyboard has been "re-bushed" and plays like factory new. The busbar has been cleaned. Every "engineering change order" has been completed. All the capacitors in the power supply have been replaced. Voice cards now have 28 turn trimmers for fine tuning. Everything has been calibrated. All this comes with the repair shop's warranty.

- It's midi, using a Roland MPU-101and the Studio Electronics midi'd modification done in 1987.

- Included is a rare "Multi-Trigger" mod by Studio Electronics where the key you hit always triggers an attack sound.

- It comes with a case to carry the Moog, and the Roland MPU.

- It comes with a manual.

- There is a splintered off wood trim piece on top.

This is an early version of this instrument, if you are interested in collecting. And it's in top notch shape for playing, whether you use the reconditioned keyboard or midi."

Part of the Arctic Times EP.

Hi folks,
This my first track produced with the OP1. I used the mono lancet simply to generate a raw square wave that I sampled with the OP1 and then used as the basis for the bass line. All the synthesis takes place within the OP1. The performance is recorded in one take using the album function. This thing is dope.

New nonlinearcircuits 8HP Triple Sloth Eurorack Module

via nonlinearcircuits

"This module contains 3 Sloth chaos circuits. Each one runs at a different rate; Torpor takes approx. 15-30 seconds to travel around 2 strange attractors, Apathy takes 60-90 seconds and Inertia takes 30-40 minutes.
There are no controls for Inertia, it does what it wants.
The pots for Apathy and Torpor do not specifically alter the frequencies, rather the weight of the outputs. Various settings will cause the signals to spend more time travelling around one strange attractor rather than the other.
Apathy and Torpor also have CV inputs. Sometimes the CV signals are injected onto the chaotic signals but depending upon conditions may cause windows of periodicity or voltage jumps. Generally the results are good.
The X, Y & Z outputs for each Sloth are taken from different stages of the circuit and are all different to each other, although Z is simply the inverted version of Y. The three Z outputs are also fed into a Difference Rectifier and the results of this are available from the + and – outputs at the bottom of the panel. The Difference Rectifier outputs are (ignoring diode voltage drops):
out + = VApathy +VInertia - VTorpor If greater than 0, otherwise 0
out - = VApathy +VInertia - VTorpor If less than 0, otherwise 0

PCB set (2) - US$24
Aluminium Panel - US$20
assembled - US$210

This is not a suitable build for beginners, if you are new to synth DIY, I suggest you get the thru-hole single Sloth."
