System Cartesian - castle mountain

Published on Feb 16, 2018 Jae Ryan

"I wanted to explore AM synthesis a little more and dig in to the sounds of the Buchla I fell in love with when I borrowed it. Also the sounds of Cortini's Forse which was a huge influence in me getting addicted to west coast and modular synthesis in general.

I'm running the STO through the modDemix but using the Telharmonics phase output as the modulator. This gives the AM modulation a bit of the tone of the six step sequence and adds a little movement. Otherwise it's a fairly straight forward synth patch with the Woggle doing some FM on the STO and the random out from it negatively triggering the decay on the bass synth part (this is one of my favourite techniques/use of a random out lately thanks to the 0-Coast and the fact that you can clock it so the random is at least musical!).

The two other things I wanted to explore here was manually "playing" Rene to get more of the Buchla touch place feel so I just tuned each of the 4 rows of Rene to a different note with no Y axis access. This means that everytime I touch a row the new note of the arpeggio would trigger.

I was also experimenting with WAYYYY too much reverb and I'm not gonna lie, I'll probably do It again......."

Hexinverter - Mutant Rimshot Jam/Demo

Published on Feb 16, 2018 Hexinverter Électronique

"Rimshot: a percussion technique where the rim of a snare drum is struck producing a dry, woody-sounding accent. Mutant Rimshot: an analogue Eurorack Module that produces realistic rimshots and.....other sounds.

In this patch the rimshot filter cutoff and pitch are modulated by Mofenzeef Devient, accompanied by Mutants Hihats, Bass Drum and Snare, finished off with some reverb from Erbe Verbe."

The unit is working fine as being tested in Test Mode after warming up for few hours, all the voices sounding fine with all the buttons and sliders and keys working as they should. No noticeable scratch noise on the knobs."

"Uncommon bass synth pedals. Modded (by our tech) so you can sweep the filter using the volume pedal (this mod is switchable).

Zoom into the photos for more information about the controls - they are simple and self-explanatory. It needed the mod because, although it sounds pretty good, it was just a bit.. boring. When testing the controls we found that sweeping the filter knob produced some great sounds so we asked our tech to add the mod to allow this to be done using the volume pedal. The mod is activated by a switch.

Excellent cosmetic condition with some scuffs and dings to the face. There is some oxidation to the back of the pedals but otherwise they are are very clean. The end panels are very good with some wear around the edges and corners. See photos for more information on cosmetic condition."

"This is the pre-Midi version running OS 1.6 - it autotunes without issue once it's been allowed to warm up. The power supply has been fully-recapped as part of the service.

It is in excellent working order, however there is a minor issue with the VCO 2 & 3 Vernier tuning pots. They work: you can coarse/fine tune the oscillators using the coarse/fine tune concentric knobs, but sometimes when just turning the fine tune, the vernier doesn't pick up the coarse tune. The functionality of the synth is fine (I'd not spotted this as a problem). Usually, you can turn the fine tune and the coarse tune moves (slowly) so it's possible to only use the fine tune control - lots of spinning will adjust the coarse tune gradually. In practice, this isn't something I find myself wanting to do, so feel this to be a very minor issue, but worth noting."

Kilpatrick K4815 Pattern Generator

"As its premier offering in the modular synthesizer world, the K4815 Pattern Generator by Kilpatrick Audio packs incredible power into a small 20HP Eurorack module that offers virtually unlimited creative potential for modular players. The K4815 can produce notes and varying control voltages for a wide range of musical applications. Its unique approach to music creation is sure to have you finding new melodies and rhythms never heard before. Unlike a step sequencer, where the player picks each note in a sequence, the K4815 creates sequences by combining a scale, a visual pattern (as shown on the display) and a sequence playback motion to determine the rhythms and notes that are actually played. Other parameters can adjust the note and sequence length, as well as the transposition, direction of playback, and so on."

"This is the TB-303 clone Made in Germany by German synth maker MAM (Music And More). This synth gets you very close to the 303 sound without the crazy price tag.

It is an analog monophonic bass synthesizer with MIDI implementation to allow you to create 303-like bass lines from your sequencer.
Its single VCO offers the same two basic waveforms as the TB-303: a sawtooth and square wave which can be mixed together for a
more interesting tone than the 303 could originally produce.

Filter frequency cutoff
Resonance
Envelope mod amount
Envelope decay time

"Another long boring ambient piece.

With the modular set-up my goal is to always capture 'moments'. Because of this I never have or take the time to set up the camera or anything like that. I just like to hit record, capture what comes out and then rip the patch cables out. That's what happened here so I made a little video of a cigarette burning in case you did want to stare at the screen while you listen..............."

Frap Tools - Fumana - Parametric Scanning

Published on Feb 16, 2018 DivKidVideo

1. Frap Tools - Fumana - Parametric Scanning
"After my first patch video here's the next in the #FumanaFridays series of videos with the Frap Tools Fumana. Here I go in depth with the parametric scanning options with single inputs, stereo inputs (going left to odd band input and right to even band input), mono outputs (all out), stereo outputs (not really stereo but hard panning the odd and even band outputs), modulating amplification or attenuation of one of several bands depending on the frequency and Q/width settings. It's a gorgeously smooth and buttery sounding unit that makes complex tonal shifts and sounds really easy."

2. Frap Tools - Fumana *First Patch*
"God this Fumana is gorgeous! It's several bands of fixed filter banks (band pass filters) that isolate the sound and let you pan, scan, morph and tilt your way around the filters beautifully. It's got a great set of fixed frequencies that really make basic waves speak very vocal and formant like. Enjoy my literal first patch with just an AJH Synth MiniMod VCO saw wave into it and some LFOs modulate through the bands. Full demo in the near future. Cheers!"

Vermona PERfourMER mkII - First sounds

Published on Feb 16, 2018 Simon Chauvin

"Just received the Vermona PERfourMER mkII: a 4 voice analog synth.

I instantly fell in love with the very warm and deep analog sound, the endless sonic possibilities offered by having full independent access to each voice, and the overall playability (big knobs, very intuitive layout) !

The sequence starts with only 1 voice (bass), using the square wave and some nice edgy filter envelope. I then add a sub layer with a sine wave, pitched-modulated by an LFO. The last 2 voices (respectively sawtooth and square waves, and panned left and right) enter with the kick, adding higher pitched notes."

Live! Jam with Space X Starman: Volca Beats/ PO-12/ Alchemy/ Xynthesizr/ minijam hub

Published on Feb 16, 2018 Kalkartronic

"Space X Starman has a passenger! 😂
Put on my knitted space suit and my protective space helmet, beamed me up and sat besides Starman to jam around. Since there is no sound in space due to lack of atmosphere, I plugged the output of the minijam hub mixer into Starman's helmet radio, so he could enjoy the ride. Don't know whether he liked it or not - he did not show any emotion.... 🤔
Gear set-up: iPad in iStudio frame running Alchemy and Xynthsizr (being the master Midi clock for the Volca Beats), sync-out of the Volca Beats to sync-in of the Teenage Engineering PO-12 (bass and snare). All mixed mono with minijam hub.
Thanks a lot for watching, likes and subscribes!"

"For the pleasure of patching.
Some automated switches + preset goes from 1 to 30 sequentially. I also switch BD and HH from BugBrand DRM1 manually.

Difficult to make it more complex in one 30 mins session, though thanks to preset manager I was able to catch on the latest session I did where this patch took birth.
This time the 248 is also not ext. clocked/synched.

No effects, nothing added. Just direct outputs from Buchla 206e mixer (BugBrand DRM1 also goes to 206e).
The reverb we hear on the 259r comes from the spring reverb I made in module-module format a while ago (original circuit by Tom Whitwell)."

Hybrid modular - The one must-have module: bridging Eurorack and VCV Rack, Softube (ES-8 and MOTU)

Published on Feb 16, 2018 loopop

"NOTE: If you're going to use a DC Coupled interface use a floating ring TRS cable and not the one show in the video - see more info below.

Here's what this clip is about: Going modular is a lot of fun but can get very expensive, very fast. But there's a way put together a hybrid modular synth in a gradual, focused way, by only getting the modules you need in hardware form, and integrating others using software.

After experimenting a lot with creating a hybrid VCV/Eurorack - I can say it works really nicely. If anyone asks me what's my one must have Eurorack module, it's definitely one which will let you bridge between virtual modules and real ones.

In this video I review the ES-8 from Expert Sleepers and the 8A from MOTU, check out their pros and cons, and how well they integrate with virtual eurorack from VCV, Softube and other software."
