Expanding Sound's Favorite Korg Minilogue XD Presets

New Korg Minilogue XD analog polysynth with multi engine, my favorite 17 factory presets

Published on Mar 28, 2019 Expanding Sound

"I just picked up my new Korg Minilogue XD, and for my money it sounds fantastic. One of my rituals with a new synth is to go through the presets when I first take it out and see what jumps out at me. Some presets make you want to fiddle, some you want to skip, and some are instantly inspiring. I love what Korg has been doing for synths over the last few years, everything from Gadget to the Volca line to the Mini and Monologues. This new Minilogue XD is no exception. It sounds fantastic and huge. Im still learning the synth, but these are 17 presets that just popped right out at me and made me feel like I made the right choice picking this up. I set up my camera and just went through the whole synth, and cut the presets that didn't jump out at me. Forgive my playing as this was just one long video cut up, and most of it is just little jams here and there."

"**TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS BELOW** Playing around with the Furthrrrr Generator from Endorphin.es has been a total pleasure preparing for and working on this video. The range of tones that ooze out of this thing doesn't cease to amaze me. The module is a dual/complex oscillator design with a lot of wave shaping, history/heritage from the Buchla 259 and a few unique twists. The updated (you can swap them out) digital "Strong Linear Core" giving through zero FM really adds a tonne of musical useful FM to the oscillator too. In the video I turn the thing into a drum machine, explore shifting tones and drones, melodies, bass and a whole load more. Check the index below and skip around as you see fit. Enjoy!

Introducing K1CK SYNTH - Kick Drum Plugin

Published on Mar 27, 2019 2getheraudio

"Boston, MA USA (March 26, 2019) - 2getheraudio, has released K1CK Synth, a virtual instrument with a new hybrid synth engine designed specifically for creating and delivering a huge range of electronic kick drum sounds. Two interfaces, Simple and Expert, give producers a highly optimized set of sound design controls for fast auditioning, simple tweaking or fine tune control of kick drum sounds. K1CK Synth is available to purchase under 2getheraudio’s Pay-What-You-Want (minimum $10) pricing model off their website.

'The perfect kick drum is not easy to achieve and yet it’s critical to every music track no matter what the style,” says Jennifer Hruska, CEO of 2getheraudio. “Like all 2getheraudio products, we set out to make the sound design process easier and faster while delivering super professional results. I’m not kidding when I say this plugin delivers some serious kick, and making your own signature sound with K1CK Synth is finally a fun thing to do!'

Under the hood, K1CK Synth uses a custom audio engine with sampled attack transients and specialized synth oscillators to generate the initial big body sound. Individual envelopes for pitch and amplitude shape the decay while customized drive and compression circuits dial in the punch. Effects, including bit crushing, decimation, and low pass and high pass filters deliver a huge range of possibilities for extra character and edge. Finally, three kick drum microphone options add the polish.

For those without the time or expertise to fine tune all these parameters, K1CK Synth offers a Simple View which exposes just four sound control knobs, 4 effects buttons and 4 mic options for quickly dialing in your sound. When needed, and Expert View takes you under the hood for finer control.
K1CK Synth supports 64-bit VST, AU, AAX capable DAWs. It is Mac and Windows compatible. K1CK Synth is released under 2getheraudio's Pay-What-You-Want (minimum $10) business model so nearly all musicians, regardless of their ability to pay, have access to this software. A free trial is available at https://www.2getheraudio.com/ instruments/k1ck-synth.

Mutable Instruments Elements Eurorack Resonator Synth Module DIY Clone

via this auction

"Mutable Instruments Elements Eurorack Resonator Synth Module Clone New Black/Gold Build 2018 MINT!

Mutable Instruments Elements built by an electronics engineer (Momo Modular) with ten years of experience. Calibrated and tested, with factory firmware. Includes screws and ribbon cable. Briefly used only in a smoke/pet free pro studio.

Elements is a full-blown synthesis voice based on modal synthesis – an under-appreciated flavour of physical modelling synthesis with a strange and abstract feel.

Elements combines an exciter synthesis section generating raw, noisy sounds characteristic of bowing (filtered friction noise), blowing (pitch-controlled granular noise), or striking (stick, mallet, hammer or brush sample playback… or bursts of synthetic impulsions).

These sources, or external audio signals, are processed by a modal filter bank – an ensemble of 64 tuned band-pass filters simulating the response of various resonant structures (plates, strings, tubes…) with adjustable brightness and damping. A stereo ambience reverberator adds depth and presence to the sound.

All parameters have a very meaningful and well-delimited impact on the sound. When designing Elements, great care has been taken in selecting parameter ranges and control curves, producing a large palette of sounds – often beyond physical realism – but always well controlled and stable. The “dark spots” of noise and feedback are reached gradually, and they do still react to controls. The module is deliberately menu- and switch-free – what you dial/patch is what you hear!"

New Esion! iOS Looper by once upon a synth

My new looper iOS app Esion! Published on Mar 28, 2019 once upon a synth

"I'm excited to introduce Esion, my new texture looper iOS app. You get 3 free-running tracks and 4 effects. Each effect has an XY pad. The idea is to capture random vocal sounds or ambient sounds and turn them into strange evolving textures that you can use in your songs. It's available for both iPhone and iPad.

Download the app: http://bit.ly/esionapp"

"Esion is a sound design and experimentation tool. You start by recording an audio sample into one of 3 tracks (e.g. by whistling into the mic). As soon as you're done recording, the audio starts looping.

Now, here's the fun part! Each track is run through its own effect chain which includes a pitch shifter, bit crusher, delay and reverb. Each effect has 2 parameters you can adjust by positioning circles on the XY pad. You can also bypass any effect.

Tired of your recording? No problem, simply record over it. The effect settings remain in tact when you record a new sample. This allows you to experiment with different textures and quickly turn your simple samples into polyrhythmic, organic, unrecognizable sonic textures. Cool right?

Unlike traditional loopers, Esion is not time-sync'd or rhythm-based (i.e. it's not your standard guitar looper pedal). Instead, Esion is free flowing and designed to be used to create ambient experimental sonic textures and complex evolving loops.

After spending some time tweaking your sound, you can double-tap anywhere on the XY pad to start recording your performance. All your recordings are saved as wav files which you can then export into your favourite DAW and or share with your friends.

••• FEATURES •••
• 3 independent tracks.
• Record audio loops with the mic.
• Reverse the loops in real-time.
• Mute/Disable/Clear loops on the fly.
• Flexible architecture. You can turn all effects and tracks on/off independently.
• Run each track through 4 effects: Bit Crusher/Sample-Rate reducer, Time/Pitch Stretcher, Reverb, Delay.
• Each effect has a dedicated XY-pad to control parameters independently for each track.
• XY-pad dedicated to changing pan and volume for each track separately.
• Global record feature allows you to record everything you hear. Recordings are stored as wav files which you can export/share.
• While recording you can tweak all the parameters to create complex performances.
• Universal app (iPhone/iPad)

••• PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING •••
• This is *not* a tempo-sync'd/rhythmic/beat looper. If you're looking for a traditional looper app for making beats, this is not that app.
• Audiobus/IAA/AUv3/Ableton Link are *not* supported, sorry! I designed this to be a standalone sound design tool. Think: "Voice Memo" for aliens.
• While the app is primarily designed to be used with the built-in mic, you should be able to connect other interfaces and hardware too. I've tested it with the Roland Go:Mixer Pro and it worked fine but I can't guarantee that it'll work with all other hardware interfaces (since I can't test them all).

If you want to see the app in action please watch my YouTube videos (http://onceuponasynth.tv).

If you do get the app, thank you so much! I hope you create beautiful and strange sounds with it.

Made with 💚 in Canada."

Lightstorm - World's First Light Eurorack Synthesizer

Published on Mar 21, 2019 Strange Electronic

via Strange Electronic

"The Lightstorm Eurorack Case is a new type of interactive modular synthesizer case that integrates voltage-controlled LED lighting, adding visually stunning effects to live performance and giving inspiration in the studio. The Lightstorm Module brings creative lighting into the synthesizer workflow, going beyond audio-reactive effects. Now any control voltage - LFOs, envelopes, sequencers - can control full-spectrum LED lighting.

Henry Strange, founder and CEO of Strange Electronic, explains “Our company has been involved with professional touring, large fixed installations, and interactive happenings for over 10 years. Lighting is always, at least, HALF the show. We’ve made countless systems that integrate lights, controllers, and laptops. Now, with Lightstorm, we’ve found a fun and creative way to put lighting control directly in musicians eurorack systems.”

Renowned Los Angeles based producer and artist, Daedelus, currently utilizes the Lightstorm while touring around the world. “I’m very performance minded. Modular has opened this whole new vista to create sounds, but as an experience it can be very flat. I’m always looking for ways to embody the sounds and what better way than to create a light experience that is localized at my hands but expressed so much further, deformed by my sounds but inhabiting the actual space of the instrument.”

Using the Lightstorm is similar to other eurorack format modules. With the Lightstorm Module, the same control signals used to make music can be used to make a light show. This makes it easy for musicians to control lights without learning a lighting technology like DMX. The Lightstorm comes with a light strip but the LED output port will connect to many forms of LED devices, giving the user another way to personalize their lighting.

The Lightstorm Eurorack Case is an 84hp, 6U case bundled with a 30W power supply and built-in LEDs controlled by the Lightstorm Module. With frosted acrylic sides, the RGB LEDs can flash, pulse, and glow up to 1000 lumens of light in all directions. The ergonomic angle of the case allows the audience to see the performer work the modules while playing comfortably. This brings the audience into the performer’s craft rather than staring at the back of a box or the back of the artist. When in the studio, the case can stand upright, saving space and acting as a piece to beautify your space."
