RIP Mike McGrath of Muff Wiggler

It's come to my attention that Mike McGrath, founder of the Muff Wiggler forum, has passed away. I am in complete shock. I don't know what to say, what to post. As most of you know, Mike created the de facto modular synth forum on the internet, Muff Wiggler, and he did it in a way that put members first. He created a platform for makers and users of synths to come together and engage directly with each other.

Some personal history:  Mike reached out to me years ago, before starting the Muff Wiggler forum. He actually had a couple of blogs including Muff Wiggler before the forum. That image to the left is the first image of his I posted here back on Dec 4, 2006 (he also had a classic blue Wiard modular system that was the envy of many synth enthusiasts). The last post from Mike went up back on July 30, 2018 when he gave away a Buchla Music Easel to save a life.

I met Mike at NAMM, and at the opening of the Muff Wiggler store in Portland back in 2014. We chatted off and on over email over the years and he was always supportive. He was real and down to earth. I was looking forward to reminiscing with him on the "old days" and what it was like for him to run the best modular (and synth) forum on the net. He once corrected me when I said he ran the best modular forum - he said the forum covered synths too! :)

I just can't believe he is gone. As the host of this site, I feel like I lost a fellow compatriot. Someone I had history with through the ups and downs. Running a site can be a challenge, and just knowing he was out there doing his thing helped. I am going to miss him and the lost experiences we would all have had with him around.

Critter & Guitari - Turingmachina v3 for Organelle

Published on Apr 22, 2019 Critter & Guitari

"Author: ringhof

This is one of thirteen user-made patches we're showcasing! The Organelle is full of possibilities waiting to be explored and shared. Each patch in this series is a unique approach to an instrument or effect - the result of the contributor working with the Organelle to make their vision a reality! The icing of this musical cake is that the patches have been shared so others may explore and create! Thanks to all the creators making the Organelle more than we hoped it could be!

This 'sequenzer' packs a punch in only eight steps. Use one page to set sequence length, interval of random occurrence, and range of randomness. Use another to set tempo, beat subdivision, note duration and harmonic scale! Add reverb to your sound by routing your external instrument's output to the Organelle's audio input. We played this sequencer with the Bolsa Bass, using Turingmachina to add some reverb.

Oberheim OBXa with GFI System Clockwork Delay V3

Published on Apr 22, 2019 synthlegends

"In this demo I only used one hardware effect, the GFI System Clockwork Delay V3. No other effects or mastering is used, also no plug ins. The Clockwork Delay is a quite unknown pedal from Indonesia. I like the tone very much and it is a nice delay for ambient stuff. It complements very well with the OBXa.

The Clockwork is great for synthesizers, because it has got 2 analog ins and 2 analog outs. It makes great stereo and ping pong delays. There are 7 algorithms like DIGITAL, ANALOG, DUAL, DIFUSE, AMBIENT; MULTIHEAD-3 and MULTIHEAD 4. More infos on

Thanks for watching and listening."

Moog One

"Moog One (2018) is definitely one of the best analog poly-synths ever built if not THE best. With its dual filter section and flexible routing it can easily emulate many of the golden vintage synths from the late 70s and 80s. The track is using sounds (including drums) only from the Moog One (multitracking). Composed and produced by"

LOOPY and VOLT Synth LIVE Looping Improv | haQ attaQ

Published on Apr 22, 2019 Jakob Haq

"I’ve been using a wide range of Synthesizers and synthesis methods, both analogue and digital, for the past 25 years to make a huge amount of sounds. I’ve made sounds for my own productions, sounds that I’ve given away and I’ve also been hired by synth developers to make preset packs. But I’ve realised that I rarely use the sounds I make and I always end up making new sounds when I produce music.

So for once I wanted to see what would happen if I only used my own “finished” sounds, recording stuff on the fly. To do this I needed my recording setup to feel “organic” and instant, something that wouldn’t require me to do anything else but to press record and just play. It turns out that Loopy by A tasty pixel together with a thoroughly mapped out KORG NANOKONTROL Studio MIDI controller was the answer. I’m only using VOLT Synth by Kai Aras aka Numerical Audio and the haQ paQ sound pack (that I was hired to make) as my sound source. I made the drums with DM2 by Audionomy."

"The TWO59 is an accurate recreation in EURORACK format of the VCO/LFO section of the most sought after vintage west coast complex oscillator.

Because of the triangle core, the VCO works very well for FM modulation.

-38mm depth behind the panel, including the power connector (back capacitors variant)
-3 cv inputs : KEY CV, CV IN, FM IN
