Nick Semrad's Sequential Pro 3 Patch Set (Demo)

video upload by Nicholas Semrad

"Here is a demo video for my available-for-purchase Sequential Pro 3 Patch Set. You can purchase these patches at my website, www.nicholastsemrad.com/shop.

My apologies for the somewhat shaky video at times. I got a little too into the wheel usage ;-)

These patches are for use EXCLUSIVELY with the Pro 3 and no other boards/software. Thanks for Emily Hoerdemann for the cover design!"

Happy Birthday Herb Deutsch!

In case you missed it, Herb Deutsch turned 90 today! See Moog Music's GIANTS | Herb Deutsch and The Bog Moog Foundation post featuring a video of Herb and a raffle for a Minimoog Model D signed by him.

You can find numerous posts mentioning Herb Deutsch in previous posts here.

Rather than go with a classic shot of Herb with a Moog synthesizer, I thought I'd go with what is currently featured on Wikipedia. Why? Why not? It's a reflection of popular culture outside of our inner synth community, and it's interesting in that this is the image they selected for him. It's also a great shot!

Here's a blurb from Wikipedia:

"Herbert A. Deutsch (born February, 1932) is an American composer, inventor, and educator. Currently professor emeritus of electronic music and composition at Hofstra University, he is best known for co-inventing the Moog Synthesizer with Bob Moog in 1964.

Deutsch had assembled a theremin based on Moog's design in 1962 and in November, 1963 he introduced himself to Moog at a music-education conference in Rochester, NY.[1] In 1964 Moog and Deutsch started investigating the possibilities of a new instrument to aid composers.[2] Deutsch has been credited with the keyboard interface of the Moog.[2] He composed the first piece ever for the Moog ("Jazz Images - A Worksong and Blues"[1]) and performed early Moog concerts at The Town Hall and The Museum of Modern Art in New York (1969's Jazz in the Garden [3]).[4] The prototype Moog synthesizer, developed by Bob Moog and Herbert Deutsch in 1964, is part of the collections of The Henry Ford museum.[5]

Deutsch is a dedicated educator. In the early 1970s he taught at St. Agnes High School in Rockville Centre, New York. He has taught at Hofstra University for over 50 years and was twice the chair of the music department. Deutsch co-founded the Long Island Composers Alliance in 1972, and works with music foundation NYSSMA. In 1994 he proposed its Electronic Music Composition Showcase.[6]"

Happy birthday Herb! :)

"One possible connection between the Buchla-Tiptop Audio 281t Quad Function Generator and the BuchaUSA 208c Easel Command using the UTL-1 Format Jumbler from Low-Gain. Clearly there are at least 10,000 more possibilities :-)"

Buchla 208c to Buchla Tiptop 281t 258t

"In my previous post used the Tiptop 281t to drive the 208c, this time I'm reversing the with the Buchla 208c pulser driving the 281t and different flavors of random voltages going to the 258t oscillators. Enjoy!"

Exploration | Sequential Prophet 10 REV4

video upload by MIDERA

"You wouldn’t know it but I already wrote a description. Only, YouTube does this wonderful things on phones where if you pull down to refresh, it’ll delete everything if you hadn’t saved (no warning splash screen). So that’s fun. Here we go again.

Ok, so I dismantled my studio, ripped everything down, frustrated that I have too much but can’t figure out what to part with. Part of its fear that I’ll never get it back, part of its fear that it’ll just go up in price to ridiculous levels (Juno 106 for one, I bet my Roland SH-01a (blue) I sold for $300 is fetching more than my real SH-101 these days too) so I can’t get them back. Part of it is that I genuinely enjoy using the gear and writing weird things with them (my Hapyness patch on the D50 for example).

My studio is small. 11x12’, which just isn’t very much room. But I don’t want a lot of gear hooked up to sequencers as it get difficult to manage. But I want to make good use of everything… constant disarray, rearranging, dissatisfaction, etc.

As for the P10, I don’t like where it’s seated, but I sat down anyway, plugged it in, and just recorded the process. It might start out pleasant, but it soon hits a cacophony of disharmonious sounds. Hard to say whether it’s interesting. I had fun exploring anyway.

"Star Instruments Synare 3 PS-3 Synth / Electronic Drum. Famously used by Joy Division as snare sound on "she's lost control." Simple oscillators thru nice unique sounding filter with fm and vcf + vca decay envelopes. Can be played with drum sticks or has an unusual trigger input (functions more like vca input, best with positive triggers / voltages you can attenuate).Works fine."

Ambient Explorations pt.32 (Atari Punk Console DIY Synthesizer)

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"I decided to start learning about how to build DIY synthesizers, and the basics of circuit bending as a whole, so as a complete noob in all of this, I bought an Atari Punk Console DIY synthesizer kit on synthrotek. I spent probably close to 7 hours on this simple build, just because I never soldered anything in my life so it took some troubleshooting at some point, but I managed to get it working somewhat. I will be making videos about DIY synthesizers and time-lapses and whatnot of my beginner experiments, and such. For now, I made this 'ambient' piece with the 'Quinoa Punk Console'. I thought it would be funny if I put it into a used box of Chewy granola bars, instead of a normal box.

Ensoniq ESQ-1 Digital Wave Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

"The ESQ-1 is a ridiculously cool polyphonic 8-voice vintage synth with analog filters. Grab your headbands and Aquanet: it's about to get real 80's in here. [raise your hand if you ever used Aquanet]

Even though she's got some age on her, the features on this thing are nice: it's a pressure and velocity sensitive 61 key (8 voice, 9 channel multitimbral) synth with three oscillators (32 waveforms), a 24dB low pass analog filter, four (4 rate, 3 level) envelopes, three LFOs, 8 track sequencer, versatile modulation..wait for it....and MIDI.

Dig deeper into the modulation options and you'll find the ability to create organic, evolving pads and subtle shifting textures. The sound quality of the ESQ-1 is digital, yet warm and unmistakably '80s with tons of character and depth to what it can create.

This amazing piece of synth history is lightly used for its age and has signs of love and use overall. But it still looks great and functions as it should. Grab this for your rig and we'll ship out the next day with the included bag!"

via this auction

"Midibox SID DIY synthesizer. It was built by my friend at Feedback Modules 12 years ago. It has a solid metal case and works perfectly. It's the real deal when it comes to C64 sounds. It has some gritty 8bit sounds as well as a real analogue multimode filter, 3 oscillators and plenty of modulations. The chip came from my old C64, it's the latest version, the one with the fewer bugs. I've made a video demo with some presets, you can find it on this page. The reverb is coming from an external unit."

Solina String Ensemble Synthesizer Arp Explorer

"Rare Solina String-Synthesizer, a combination of the classic String-Ensemble and an Arp Explorer monopnonic synthesizer in one box including the ability to route the strings through the filter of the Explorer, very nice. "This is a very rare hybrid version of the Solina String. It is supposed that only 100 units were built by Eminent in Netherland (Bodegraven). It is a combination of the String Ensemble and the Arp Explorer 1. The mix beetween synthetizer filter and the string machine makes really nice possibilities and a so nice athmospheric sounds."

2 x Roland SH-1000 Analog Synthesizer 1973 | HD DEMO – Comparison

video upload by Andy Whitmore

"The Roland SH-1000 is a monophonic analog synth.
It has a fully programmable part and a preset part in addition.
It has an awesome analog tone!
Not to be confused with the SH-2000, which is a fully preset synthesizer.

The Roland SH-1000, introduced in 1973, was the first compact synthesizer produced in Japan, and the first synthesizer produced by Roland.

It resembles a home organ more than a commercial synth, with coloured tabs labelled with descriptions of its presets and of the "footage" of the divide-down oscillator system used in its manually editable synthesizer section. It produced electronic sounds that many professional musicians sought after whilst being easier to obtain and transport than its Western equivalents.

The synthesizer has 10 simple preset voices combined with a manually editable section which can be manually tweaked around to create new interesting sounds. No user program memory is available. Its effects include white noise generator, portamento, octave transposition, two low frequency oscillators and a random note generator. Even with a single oscillator, it sounds like there are several thanks to the 8 sub-osc keys. The ninth is the (white or pink) noise."
