The VC-10 is a 20 band vocoder with an onboard microphone (modulator) and internal tone generators (carriers)

External pitch control of the internal tone generators
An LFO (vibrato) with speed and depth

The Berlin-based producer, mixing engineer, and live artist—who has been creating and recording ground-shaking techno and house music with his System 35 for years—recently discussed how his experience with modular instruments has shaped his style and process.

'What I love about modular is how you can incorporate ‘happy accidents’ in the workflow, especially when tossing around patterns on the analogue sequencers,” Hannes shared. “I love the physicality of the process, actually standing in front of this big instrument rather than sitting in front of a computer screen. Finally, there is a sonic world difficult to achieve with conventional synths. I love, for example, how I can create stereo sounds with a pair of VCAs and AM modulation as a part of the actual synthesis, not with external effects.'

Model 10 Returns to Production!
One of our most beloved legacy instruments, the Model 10 modular synthesizer, is officially back in production at our factory in Asheville, North Carolina. This re-issue of the instrument follows a limited-time production run in 2019 that helped introduce these systems to a whole new generation of synthesists.

Today's Model 10 is a faithful recreation of Bob Moog’s first compact modular synthesizer model, all the way down to its hand-soldered electronic circuits. Each system is built to order and now includes a host of updates that allow this machine to be more easily integrated into modern studios across the globe.

The fully analog instrument is made up of 11 discrete analog modules, including the 907 Fixed Filter Bank, revered for its vast sound shaping and timbral possibilities, and three 900 Series oscillators, the foundational sound behind works like Wendy Carlos’s Switched-On Bach and Isao Tomita’s Snowflakes Are Dancing.

The predecessor to the Model 15, the Model 10 design focuses on purity of sound and simplicity to provide the enormous sonic depth and dimension found only in a vintage Moog modular synthesizer. This powerhouse breaks down the fundamental building blocks of sound, gifting the operator the ability to explore new frontiers of self expression—a tradition of electronic experimentation that has continued to evolve since the dawn of modular synthesis.

MakeNoise Strega | Episode 09 | 'Stregheria'

"Where Strega means 'female witch' in Italian, Stregheria means 'witchcraft' and refers to 'The Old Religion'. When you take a closer look at Strega, you'll notice some familiar components. There's a bit of WoggleBug, STO, Function, Echophon and a filter. I wanted to find out if I would be able to approximate a Strega with older MakeNoise modules - a Stregheria.
I used the MMX as a filter.
It may have not been clear in my previous eight episodes, but I never really understood Strega. It was always seconds away from blowing up a patch, especially when using the Time knob. I usually made videos with lots of effects, and 'bare' patches sounded small, weird and unpleasant.
The 'Stregheria' combo learned me a lot and this immediately translated back to Strega herself. She's always been in my favorite top 5, but she's also in the top 5 of most challenging and unforgiving modules. Until now."

So when i was messing around with the previous setup for the eleven and nine track... I happened to stumble over an old pattern/track i played at Fono KL many moons ago. This track actually never made itself all the way of becoming a real tune so i decided.. hey why not just remodel it a little bit, add some 303 squares and saw for taste and jam a bit? Said and done!

Gear used:

- Digitakt - kick; low end bass and all of the percussion
- Norand mono, FM style modulated sequence modulated
- Avalon bassline, square lead + for the first time ever in BURG history, sawtooth and resonance. :)
- Analog four adds delay/reverb and only acts as a mixer for the avalon/norand
- KP3+ granular delay, mixed low in the background for that delicate glitch feel

All was recorded onto the Zoom H5 on 2 track and mastered post in my DAW with iZotope 7 limiter and compressor + EQ.

"With a strong resemblance to Soviet military build technology 😄, this is in fact a beautiful Italian Crumar DS-1 analog synthesizer. Of which only 200 were made in the late 70's. They are built like tanks but sound like bleep and bubble baby making heaven. It has some interesting waveforms on the lfo section. The LFOs and modulation sources are so fun and intuitive. It creates a funtastic range of sounds and effects. Saw, Rev Saw, Triangle, Square, Staircase, and Sample and Hold. It's good stuff! DCO's stability are perfect and get wide octave range. The VCA is lightning fast and can almost pop at attack. Filter is moog-ish to me. It's sharp but warm. This beauty has the potential for leads, bass, drums, and outerwordly space age tones."

Modor DR-2 Drum machine - Drum & bass (no talk )

"I make Drum & bass pattern small drums improvisation but of course this is incredible machine for programming up to 128 step .

First of all: although it's digital, the DR-2 is not about sampling. It's a drum synthesizer, like a classic analog drum machine, but it uses digital sound synthesis algorithms instead of analog circuitry. There are no samples in the DR-2, and there's no sample memory.

Just like the Modor NF-1, the DR-2 is not build to recreate the classics of the past. The DR-2 uses digital sound synthesis to innovate drum sounds and rhythms. Many sounds will be recognizable. It is possible to make classic sounding bass drums, snares and rimshots. It's not difficult to program classic floorfillers with the DR-2. But with 12 synthesis parameters per drum, you'll easily find yourself creating your own individual sound.

Xaoc Devices LEIBNIZ #4 / POCZDAM / switching & routing / extensive playthrough

"POCZDAM is a routing and switching utility module for the LEIBNIZ BINARY SUBSYSTEM. It hosts a lot of inputs and outputs that you can use to extract bits (gates) from the selected source or to send your own signals in to route somewhere else in your patch. POCZDAM also features a built-in clock that you manually need to connect for it to have any influence on the system.

POCZDAM is really intuitive to work with but everything really much depends on remembering what you connected to which Leibniz inputs and outputs of Poczdam. While preparing for the video there were a few of times where I was profoundly confused just because I forgot the order in which I chained the modules. As a result of this, I thought a lot about how to concisively demonstrate the functionality of the module, which is not as straightforward as it might seem because you need to know the order of every part of the chain to be able to make sense of it. I decided to just follow the patch examples that are described in the manual, as a safe-guard to make sure there's no confusion which module is routed how and what the expected result of the patches is.
