Yamaha Announces Exciting New Features with YC OS v1.3 Update

"The new Yamaha YC OS v1.3 update includes a range of new features that will enhance the playing experience for musicians. One of the key highlights of the update is the addition of new Piano and FM voices. The update adds three new Piano voices, including the Hamburg Grand, Felt Piano, and New CP80, giving musicians a wider range of options to choose from. In addition, the update includes both Classic and Contemporary FM Sounds, adding to the already impressive array of FM voices. BUENA PARK, Calif. (April 3, 2023) - Today, Yamaha releases a new OS update for the YC Stage Keyboard line. OS v1.3 includes new sounds, features and workflow enhancements that make the YC Series even more versatile.

New sounds lead the way in YC OS v1.3. An expressive Hamburg Grand, intimate Felt Piano from the CP Series, and an all-new CP80 sampled from the Yamaha Synth Space collection have been added. Also, the invaluable YamahaSynth IdeaScale community requested the CP80 Voice which delivers the expressive bite you would expect from this classic stage piano. In addition to the new Piano Voices, are 32 new FM Voices. Carefully curated by our London R&D team, you’ll find 16 classic DX7 basses, brass and pads and 16 modern FM sounds for contemporary genres.

The new features added in OS v1.3 improve control and workflow. Additionally, contributions from the customer-driven YamahaSynth IdeaScale community are noted:

Vibrato and Chorus for FM Organs: Vibrato and Chorus effects are now available for FM Organs, and the F2 and F3 types match the classic effects found in vintage 60s combo organs (YamahaSynth IdeaScale).

Pan to Parts Settings: Freely adjust pan for each Part separately for greater stereo mix flexibility. (YamahaSynth IdeaScale).

A/B Parameter Link Function: Press and hold the Keys A/B button and you’ll get control of Volume, Tone, Filter/EG and Effect settings for both Parts simultaneously. Great for controlling both Parts when set up in a Split or Layer.

Rotary Speed Hold: Before OS v1.3, Rotary Speaker speed settings were saved in the Live Set. This new setting allows you to keep the Rotary Speaker speed settings the same regardless of the Live Set. Studio Rotary Speaker Type Default: All organ Live Set sounds using the Rotary Speaker effect now default to the Studio type introduced in OS v1.2.

Dave Smith Added to Bob Moog Foundation's 'Captains of Industry'

"The Bob Moog Foundation is proud to announce that the family of Dave Smith (1950-2022), synthesizer and MIDI pioneer, honors his legacy through the Foundation’s Captains of Industry program.

Smith posthumously joins industry innovators Tom Oberheim, Spectrasonics, Hans Zimmer, Ray Kurzweil, Marcus Ryle, Ernst Nathorst-Böös, iZotope, Christopher Kemper, Chris Halaby, Universal Audio, Gerhard Behles, 8Dio, Larry Thomas, John Worthington, and Daniel Haver, who empower the Foundation’s work with donations of $5,000 annually over three years.

An engineer and the founder of Sequential Circuits, later Sequential, Smith created the first polyphonic synthesizer with a fully programmable memory, the Prophet-5. A long line of innovative instruments followed.

He also spearheaded the development of MIDI, which revolutionized how musicians create music. In 2013, he won a Technical Grammy Award, alongside Ikutaro Kakehashi of Roland, for their contributions to the development of MIDI. Dave Smith often recalled getting his start with the purchase of his very first synth: a Minimoog."

Overview:

Welcome to Strokes - an all-in-one, cross-platform workstation for sequencing, sampling and synthesis.

The idea of this device is to encourage free-flow experimentation and exploration of rhythm and modulation. The architecture behind Strokes is complex, but on the surface it’s designed to be intuitive no matter what your experience level is. By setting up some sounds and turning the dials, anyone can create interesting and unique results. The sequencing and modulation are cross-patched, meaning the actions of one part impact on another - in this way, the patterns all form part of the greater whole, moving in symbiosis to create cohesive results.

Rather than relying on methodical programming of patterns or computer-defined ‘randomness’, Strokes offers a way to create surprising music with an emphasis on fun. Nothing happens by accident, but you never quite know where a jam will take you. With the means to store patterns and melodic information within a project, one set up can produce different results every time.

The first four sequencer channels can be set according to your wishes, while the other four behave in various ways according to those settings. Each channel can be assigned one of 16 oscillators from Mutable Instruments’ celebrated Plaits module. Alternatively, they can each be assigned to samples of your choice with various sound design options. There are probability options to add semi-random changes to the sequencers, and on-board reverb and delay add effects processing to the sounds being generated. Various modulation options allow these sounds and effects to be changed in subtle or significant ways, always in response to the other rhythmic behaviour taking place in the project.

Strokes can run as a VST3 or AU plug-in within all major DAW environments, meaning the MIDI information generated can also be assigned to your own software and hardware instruments. On iOS, Strokes can run as a standalone application or from within a host such as AUM."

"Building off yesterday's patch I'm now syncing the sequencer to go through those 4-note arpeggios (albeit a bit of a sloppy sync by ear) then starting with a single step in both switches and adding steps while in different Pendulum modes so you can see by the lights how they go in and out of phase.
