NINA synth: dreams come true (review & jam)

video upload by Pete Midi

"Melbourne instruments NINA shows how synthesizers should be built to provide the best of both worlds: the look and feel of a real instrument and the total recall comfort of a software plugin. Thereby NINA defines total recall in the most consequent sense with an approach that makes up a milestone in synthesizer history. The only disadvantage: once you have played with NINA any other synth feels incomplete.

Songbird - MaxForLive Instrument

video upload by Dillon Bastan

"Get it Here:
https://dillonbastan.com/store/maxfor... [also at Isotonik Studios]

Songbird is a MaxForLive audio instrument. It features a simulation of a flock of birds, each bird having its own model of a syrinx (a bird vocal organ) as well as a model of a simple birdbrain that controls the syrinx to create different syllables. Each bird’s position, speed, angle, etc in the flock can be mapped to various parameters as modulation sources. This device yields anything from textures, drones, rhythms, harsh/haunting/noisy/pretty tones, generative soundscapes, odd melodies, and of course different sounding bird calls!

The design of Singbird is a collaboration between myself and Alina Kano (alinakano.com)

Erica Synths EDU DIY Compressor Build and Demo

video upload by

"Erica Synths has a new range of EDU DIY modules designed in association with Moritz Klein. The first module is a Compressor with side chaining. This video is a build of the kit and a demo of the module."

Also see: Erica Synths Stereo Compressor Eurorack Module

Press release follows:

"Need some professional polish in your modular system? With this simple diode-based compressor, you can shape the dynamics of your sound, adding punch and consistency to your patches. Whether you’re looking to beef up your basslines, add sustain to your leads, or tame the peaks of your percussion, this circuit’s got you covered.

We – Erica Synths and Moritz Klein – have developed a series of educational DIY kits under the brand name mki x es.EDU with one specific goal in mind: to teach people with little-to-no prior experience how to design analog synthesizer circuits from scratch. What you’ll find in the box is not simply meant to be soldered together and then disappear in your rack. Instead, we want to take you through the circuit design process step by step, explaining every choice we’ve made and how it impacts the finished module.

NB! All kits in these series are simple and come with extensive user manuals which can be downloaded separately, therefore we will not provide customer support in case your DIY build fails to function or similar."

Take 5 Version 2.0 - Double the Sounds + New Synthesis Features

video upload by Sequential

Press release follows:

Sequential Unveils Take 5 Synthesizer v2.0 Software Update
Latest Software Update Doubles the Number of Presets and Introduces New Synthesis Features and Effects

San Francisco, CA - Sequential, a leading manufacturer of synthesizers and electronic musical instruments, has announced the release of the Take 5 v2.0 software update, bringing a host of new features and enhancements that further extend the capabilities of this portable polyphonic analog synthesizer.

This free software update includes an additional 128 Preset and 128 User memory locations, doubling the previous sound bank size. The Factory bank expansion is filled with imaginative new sounds created by some of the world’s leading sound designers and synthesists. These sounds range from classic analog-style patches to modern, cinematic soundscapes that will give artists a competitive edge in modern music production.

Take 5 v2.0 also provides new synthesis features that dramatically expand the creative possibilities for sound design. This includes capabilities like Envelope Repeat, which allows users to create evolving and complex sounds by looping sections of the synth’s envelopes, and LFO Slew, which smooths over wave shapes to enable more organic and musical modulations. These are especially useful for creating ambient, drone, and experimental sounds, adding new dimensions to any performance.

One of the most exciting new features is the addition of a Lo-Fi effect emulating the sound of time-worn analog tape machines. Featuring controls for wow and flutter, playback head azimuth, and tape drive amount, the Lo- Fi effect can be used to add anything from a gritty character, through to a full-blown “busted tape deck” vibe, imparting a new level of vintage flavor to any of Take 5’s sounds.

'In the 18 months since we introduced it, thousands of Take 5 synths have gone around the world and introduced many musicians to the feeling of Sequential for the first time,” said David Gibbons, CEO. “We hope these new sounds excite and inspire existing owners and new Take 5 players alike.'

The Take 5 v2.0 software update includes numerous new features and several bug fixes and is available now as a free download for all Take 5 owners at the Sequential website. For more information about the Take 5 synthesizer and its v2.0 software update, visit us at: https://www.sequential.com/take-5-v2-update

Behringer Cat synth - unboxing and first sounds (no talk)

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Yes, it's my first Cat video, the Behringer Cat, which recently plunged in price by almost 50 per cent. It cost me substantially less than the Nemesis delay which it's paired with here. It's a bargain and since there was zero chance of me ever buying (and hoping to maintain) a 50-year-old original Cat it seemed a fair deal. Strangely enough I'd been looking at this synth for a month or so specifically because of two features: It's paraphonic with separate VCO 1 & 2 CV inputs; and it has beautifully raw cross-modulation. (More with the CV inputs in a later video)

This is also my first unboxing video (a challenge accepted from Berin) but I couldn't bring myself to utter lines like "here is the power supply, oh and a lovely sticker" so there's some Cat sounds over the top. There's a lot of dischordant sounds in this demo but that's what I bought it for. Of course it can do all the usual things too. The Nemesis delay is slopped over the top of everything for which I offer no apology since it sounds so much better that way, covers up sloppy playing, and makes filter twiddlings interesting. But if anyone really wants 100% raw stuff let me know. As usual there is no post-production audio trickery, the path is Cat to Nemesis to you. And for any Cat veterans out there I'm sure various settings were either redundant or bypassed (I couldn't work out the second envelope), but it's early days so live and learn. It was fun not needing to even look in a manual though, it's there in front of you. One thing that did strike me was how powerful the resonance is. I've been spoiled by the no-risk DB-01 Polivoks resonance which happily goes to 100 per cent anytime. Not here!

Visuals are AI-generated images made using Stable Diffusion. Being the creative type I came up with my very own set of AI word prompts, which I think makes me "lead visual artist, SFX supervisor and CGI chief designer".

Additional Tone Tweakers Listings, also on Reverb

"Here we have 2 vintage serge modular music systems smms modules attached to a clear custom unlabelled front panel and power supply. The previous owner says they were probably from around 1980 or so and didnt remember anything else about them - 40+ years is a long time!

The modules appear to be the wonderful wave multiplier and triple comparator, but we’re not sure so see pics and do your own research before buying so you know what to expect. If it IS the wave multiplier, this is one of the most sought after of serge modules as it sounds like nothing else.

These came out of a cabinet with Aries modules (being sold separately) and are untested. Assume they’ll need repair."

Logan String Melody II Vintage String Synthesizer

via this auction

Note the Vermona Equalizer on top. The listing is for the Logan String Melody only.

"Power supply recapped, 3 prong cord attached, refurbished by the magicians at Bell Tone Synth Works in 2022. This synth is ready for another few decades of lush stringing.

This is a classic string synth like the ARP Solina, but with more features.

The keyboard is split in the middle so that you can have a different mixture of Cello, Viola, and Violin and different Attack and Sustain settings for each section. There is also a bass oscillator and a feature called “perc” which is a deep, percussive sound similar to an upright bass.

This Logan String Melody II is in good cosmetic condition. The tolex is a bit worn, but is in overall great shape. The Veneer has a few splits or cracks. There is some minor dirt and scratches, as to be expected with a 40-year-old synth!"

Ceismography | Creating a 'drum sequencer' with Instruo Ceis ADSR

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I posted this video right when a huge earthquake hit Turkey and Syria so I decided to take it down and give it a rest. But I do think it's worth sharing since you can 'abuse' any module with gate/trigger outputs to contribute to rhythm patches. Ceis has triggers for every stage so it's great fun to just patch it into a drum module or sampler. Not to mention it's an ADSR so you can create all kinds of synced movement and modulation."
