The Tower - Days of Yore Vertical Reverb Unit

video upload by NOISEBUG

"The Tower from Days of Yore is a Vertical triple-spring reverb unit that is equally interesting looking as it is great sounding. There are lots of onboard fx/controls such as gate, vibrato, feedback, and drive. The Tower has it's own effect send and return and foot/pedal controller. There's a lot of potential experimentation packed into this thing.

In the video, the audio sources are all dry when patched into The Tower. No additional effects are used in this video.

The Tower is exceptional at adding subtle bounce or all-out drenched movement to anything you drive into it.

The Road to Berlin | XAOC Leibniz Binary Subsystem | Episode 03

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I got a bit stuck after doing the 2nd episode. Yeah, that episode sucked, but that also happens at the Lab. Dead ends are important if you want to learn to think more in u-turns. In this episode, we're back on track.

I knew the Leibniz Binary system would give me a hard time, but I underestimated that. I had a few weeks staring at my case wondering 'what's next?'. Sure, there's plenty to explore, but it's hard when you don't resonate well with the broken chiptune sounds - which are inevitable. Then, XAOC added 'Berlin' to the list of cities. It's labeled a 'numeric' VCO and it's designed especially for the Leibniz modules. It's basically a simple sawtooth with 1V/OCT, FM and Sync, but it's more like a quality D/A converter for generating waveforms. The Drezno II used to take care of that, but it would make jagged waveforms by summing lots of squares. It sounds very 8-bit. Berlin doesn't have that problem, it sounds great.

In this episode I am not doing a deepdive yet, because I just got the module. Instead I'll try to explain why it's relevant, and how a sawtooth gets all these odd/even harmonics and overtones. Why it's considered 'rich' compared to a sinewave. Then, it's easier to understand why Berlin only has a sawtooth (or scrambled saw) out. When you draw a graph of numbers 0 to 255, you'll get a nice ramp (reversed saw) that flips back to zero and counts up again. Berlin is basically counting up very fast and restarts at 0.

I'll leave the interaction between Berlin and other modules to episode 04, which will probably be posted next week. It's not going to take too long :)."

How to Create a Basic PPG-style Sound With the 3rd Wave

video upload by Groove Synthesis

"Learn how Groove Synthesis' sound designer Kurt Kurasaki quickly creates a beautiful and lush PPG-style pad sound from scratch using some of the basic concepts and features of the 3rd Wave.

Coming to you from Superbooth 2024, Kurt starts from a clean slate by initializing a preset to reset the settings of the synth. He then works with a single oscillator choosing one of the classic PPG type wavetables included with the 3rd Wave. Using the amplifier and wave envelopes, he adds movement to the sound. But the true magic to creating the iconic PPG sound lies in copying the settings of one oscillator to the other two and slightly detuning the oscillator to each other. Utilizing the 3rd Wave's multitimbral capabilities, Kurt then creates a stack of sounds that he can spread out into the stereo field by panning and detuning them ever so slightly. Within a matter of seconds, he ends up with a beautiful, shimmering, and lush PPG-style patch."

Video description:

"Uncover Quantum Soundscapes: Experience the Sonic Potential of the Schrödinger Equation.

Play with Quantum Mechanics

Take advantage of the simulation's motion characteristics to create large and evolving sounds. Play big chords or focus on the melody – QSynthi has you covered.

Sculpt the sound you want

QSynthi brings the power of quantum physics to your sound design process. By translating a quantum simulation into dynamic and evolving sounds, it opens up a new world of possibilities for music production. This innovative instrument provides real-time, adaptive tones, enabling a unique exploration of the sonic possibilities inherent in the fascinating world of quantum phenomena.

Simulate real life phenomena

QSynthi lets you animate real-life phenomena through sound, offering a unique and interactive way to understand complex systems. Explore, tweak and play – it's quantum physics, but with a melodic twist."

"Creating a Synthesizer from Schrödinger's Equation
Arthur Freye, Jannis Müller

Our project offers an alternative approach to the sensory perception of the Schrödinger equation (an elementary model of quantum phenomena) by interpreting it as a sound wave. We are building a synthesizer plugin that simulates a quantum mechanical state that evolves over time. Thus, our tool allows the creation of unique sounds that are in motion and feel alive. These can be used in professional music production without any knowledge of physics, while at the same time providing insight into a chapter of quantum mechanics. The goal is to lower the threshold for entering complex theory by first developing an intuition for the subject; but the tool can also be used purely as a musical instrument. The user is encouraged, but not forced, to learn more about the underlying physics. Simulation parameters are adjustable in real-time, allowing intuitive experimentation. Despite the approximate calculations, real physical effects such as quantum tunneling can be observed acoustically and visually."

New FuncBud Generative MIDI Sequencer for iOS or Apple Silicon

via the developer Cem Olcay:

"I’ve released my new generative sequencer app today - FuncBud. It’s a unique and fun sequencer that uses simple math functions to generate patterns. You can create your own math functions with the function builder. It’s really fun to explore the possibilities, especially if you are interested in math."

Additional details via http://keybudapp.com/funcbud & the AppStore follow.

Make music with math!

Welcome to FuncBud, the generative sequencer that uses simple math functions to create patterns.

Create, chain, and repeat simple math functions to create complex sequences.

A simple x + 1 function would sequence all the notes in the scale in order.

But it gets more interesting when you use different formulas and chain them.

Build your math functions

The function builder lets you create functions using simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division operations, as well as square, square root, sum, and product operations.

You can also use parentheses to prioritize the calculation order.

The newly created function will be saved and accessible in the library across both the standalone app and AUv3 instances.

Function results are saved to the history. Sum and product operations utilize the history to perform calculations on up to 64 values.

∑3 would sum up the last 3 results, ∏3 would take product of the last 3 results.

Define your limits

FuncBud's sequencer generates the notes in the working key and scale, within the defined minimum and maximum octaves.

Min/max octave, key, scale and the root note can be defined on the top of the UI.

The sequencer rate, gate length, gate variety, velocity, velocity variety, and swing parameters can be defined using the slider at the bottom of the UI.

The loop detector can be enabled in the settings menu if you get stuck in a loop due to the nature of the math and want to break it.

Functions can be muted by swiping them to the left, and deleted by swiping them to the right.

Take advantage of the AUv3 Plugin

FuncBud app operates both as a standalone application and as an AUv3 MIDI Plugin.

You can create AU presets and use AU parameters of the AUv3 plugin.

You can control the patterns and all other parameters with AU parameters.

You can also change the parameters or change the patterns with PatternBud."

FuncBud is available in the AppStore here.

A few pics of the inside below.

"Nowdays Ondioline are becoming extremely rare even in France where they were hand-crafted during the 40's to 60's

This one is in VERY good condition AND is absolutely a real and magic pleasure to play- Nothing except original Ondes Martenot can provide such a feeling and so organic sounds !

Tuning is perfect (A440 on all 4 octave for each key)

This particular model has the great and very efficient improvement : Sub OSC for very loud sub harmonics if needed !

it has been fully serviced from September to December 2023 by very competent technician who spent around 50 hours to do the huge work needed for a very nice AND playable Ondioline

(this tech knows the Ondioline as he serviced in the past over 10 units)

He has done a very meticulous and respectful work (all electric wires have been changed, new components when necessary, PSU serviced, ground connection, all keyboard connectors cleaned for a good contact, and completely level keyboard...HUGE work !!)

the Knee level barrer is a new one, the string (useful for 'Castagnette' , Bongo ...) is the original one and of course efficient.

You might know there are differences between Ondiolines due to the technology evolution, hand made craft, components...) so please don't compare with an other one which will sound different

Have a look and listen to what this one is capable of

"Most certainly a modern classic synth, this OB-12 is in amazing condition, considering it is 22 years old. Made in Italy by Viscount (who also made Vox organs in the 1960s)/Galanti family business, the synth was a "joint venture", legally using the Oberheim brand for marketing. The initial launch was a disaster, and the UK price tumbled from circa £2000 down to £499 through the 5-years of manufacture (2000-2005). Was it synth snobbery? (ah, I aint buying no Italian Oberheim...not a real one, dude.....).Was it bad sounding? Did it look naff? The years passed, then a few stalwart synth enthusiasts realised that the OB-12 was actually years ahead of its time. It actually IS reliable (apart from the display screen, but replacements are available). It actually can sound HUGE, and has many features that have to be highlighted. KKGB have also bothered to print off the 160-page manual; which IS very good and informative SPECS:- 256 fully programmable memory slots (128A & 128B), 12-voice poly with velocity and pressure (49 keys) ~ 4-part multi-timbral and key zoning ~ arpeggiator ~ sequencer ~ FM ~ morphing function ~ glide ~ white noise ~ ring modulation ~ 24Db filter (put the twin 12Dbs in series<>same thing) ~ 4 discreet FX (delay/reverb/chorus/distortion) ~ twin wheels (pitch/mod) ~ ribbon controller ~ global-auto voltage select (90V > 260Vac) with standard IEC mains cord (no naff external PSus) ~two banks of digital oscillators with great selection of waveforms ~ excellent "live" display which portrays editing etc ~ only 12Kgs ~ dims 92 x 39 x 12 cms...serial number 2083801. Condition of this actual instrument is 95% perfect, with only eeny dinks/scratches; the keys are nigh perfect and trigger every time. The pressure/aftertouch offers remarkable control of many features; its astonishing......"

Bad Gear - Korg MPC ZERO

video upload by AudioPilz

https://reverb.com/news/video-inside-korg-berlin-home-of-acoustic-electronic-synthesis"Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. The evolution of electronic musical instruments is mysterious: while we have seen vast improvements in the fields of design, bling bling per square inch and workflow elitism, the spec sheets are oftentimes outclassed by the feature sets of many vintage instruments.

Today we are going to talk about the Electribe 2 Sampler. This most recent installment of the iconic groove machine range was brought to the market in 2015 and not only combines the aforementioned limitations with the product family’s trademark primitivism, Korg also managed to make it look REALLY bad when compared to its predecessor."

Ensoniq ESQ-1 soundscape - Minutes till darkness

video upload by MIDERA

"I finally took the opportunity to make a video with the Ensoniq ESQ-1. I did a 'first impression video' and stumbled through it. Now I'm a little more well-versed. I actually had an overhead view of what I was doing, but the video wasn't syncing up properly, so I had to trash that one.

Wow - I think the ESQ sounds amazing. I'm really surprised honestly. It's not a 3rd Wave or anything, but - you can actually get some interesting 'wave shaping' on here by utilizing sync, which is what I was doing. Sounded fantastic and frankly, I liked it just as much as the 3rd wave.

And here's the thing - people complain that the ESQ doesn't update it's parameters in real time. Yeah - this kind of sucks with cutoff (maybe it would update in realtime with the mod wheel? If so, that is perfect, just haven't tried it yet). Well - I actually *prefer* it this way and I'll tell you why: because on things like the 3rd wave when you change a parameter, it immediately changes your sound and its jarring. On the ESQ, I can make changes and they only are apparent at the next key strike and that is absolutely great when I'm doing these live soundscapes. Yeah, sure, it would be nice to hear some things in real-time... but I thought it was perfect the way it was.

Very easy to get around on this thing for a mostly-button interface.
Final thoughts:
1) I'm surprised I hadn't bought an ESQ-1 earlier.
2) I think it sounds better than the Prophet 12, on par with or equal to the Ambika, different or maybe equal to the 3rd Wave although it can't exactly do the same thing...
3) Filters sound gorgeous. Surprised that they sort of step when the envelopes go slow, but actually it's kind of more like good character IMO.
4) How are these things so cheap given how good they are? How? Just because the interface looks bad? Not a knobby synth? Overly mass produced?

Fantastic synth. Wow."

EaganMatrix Overlays - Sneak Peek with Electra One MKII Controller

video upload by EaganMatrix Programming

"A short description of the upcoming EaganMatrix Overlay support (previously named Specialty Synths) that will be part of the next Major EaganMatrix firmware release. The content here is very similar to what Ed Eagan presented at the recent ContinuuCon 2024, but here implemented using an Electra One controller instead of a MAXMSP program. The idea is that the interface is a simple a Midi CC control scheme (that does not require bidirectional communication), the user interface for which can be implemented in numerous ways, now even as a plugin. Note this video is not intended to be an instructional presentation on exactly how to create the interface. More detailed videos will come once the new firmware is released."
