The ongoing quest for a good simple delay: The Marshall EH-1 Echohead

"Enter the vast realm of Pedal Land and choose your quest. Will it be the ever-popular Quest for the Ultimate Reverb, or will you choose an easy side quest like The Best Classic Phaser? How about one of the original favorites: The Quest for Best Simple Delay.

But what do you call simple? Is the lack of a tap tempo too simple? Does it need more than one core sound? What about the delay length? Is the pedal's physical size important? Will you be happy with mono? Is it simple if it had dual-function knobs?

My idea of a good simple delay is a small footprint, good sound (of course), reasonable delay length, tap tempo, and maybe at least one other sound-shaping function. I don't want any hidden functions or mystery knobs. It needs to have just enough features so you don't keep wanting to slide in your big stereo unit instead.

I recently bought the Arp87 delay to satisfy these criteria and it's a good delay. But I don't use it often enough to remember what the "X" knob does and I've already forgotten how to get into the hidden fifth mode.

Enter the now discontinued Marshall EH-1 Echohead. It satisfies all my criteria and is cheap. It's sort of ugly though quirky enough to get a pass. The knobs are unreadable (I can feel a reknob coming) but with a tap tempo attached and the level set permanently at maximum the only knobs to worry about are the delay type and the feedback.

The EH-1 was released in 2006 joining a range of similarly-styled effects that started in 1998. I couldn't find out when they were discontinued so it's hard to know how old my unit may be. I'm guessing they finished up around 2014. Anyone have any info on this?

Anyway it's been flawless so far, no noise, pot crackle, jack issues or feezes and I've had it running for days at a stretch. It's so good I might even let my Arp87 go (but the DM-2w definitely stays).

As usual there is no external processing or limiting. Slight volume changes that happen when I talk is because the music is ducked against my voice.

My Fairlight CMI Series III always seems to deliver something inetersting, so I fired it up and had a play with RS (Realtime Sequencer), setting a loop of 4 bars and just letting it record one track at a time. Nothing too serious, but great for creating ideas

NOTES:
A sequence runs on the Matriarch with a patch that adds random accents by periodically triggering an envelope with sample and hold. This adds a sense of extra notes or an extra voice. The lead sound is a tape-warbly keys patch on the OB-6. I love this patch as it just drips with nostalgia and introspection. The main reverb heard is both synths running through the Mercury 7 and then UA Golden is on a send from the main mixer.

"These are special days that will be remembered. Today, Saturday, you could theoretically pick up a QMMG at MakeNoise HQ, but only if you can drag your body to Ashville. If you manage to go there, keep an eye on Eugene F. Vactrolman. He may be wearing many disguises to break the 'one per customer' rule. Or maybe he'll bring the Vactrolman family, who knows. Then Sunday comes. A day for reflection. Preparation for Monday 9th. Create magic spells on Strega and summon Sauron. Or Gandalf.

Dealers all over the world have specific instructions to only accept pre-orders on the 9th. I have no idea how this will go down. Would you be able to place the order, or just leave your email. Will it be like a lottery, or more like the Hunger Games. I don't even know if they'll be available in the EU. If you happen to have Minions, use them. Explain to them the QMMG is like a quad banana. I'll have my family behind smartphones and laptops. If that doesn't work, I may need to create a timeloop and relive September 9th for as long as it takes. So if you don't see any new videos for two weeks, you'll know I'll be working on it.

It's also unclear if MakeNoise starts shipping when all preorders are settled, or stock is already present. I can't remember a modular event like this. It's never done before. MakeNoise is writing history and we're part of it. I wish you best of luck, and I 'expect' to see a lot of you sharing QMMG videos again. Let the Hunger Games begin."
