Customized sound on the Sequential Take 5. 🔥🔥🔥

video upload by Eric Jones

"I decided to create a patch on this powerful little synth. Programming is easy but it depends on how deep you would like to go especially when you start to dive into the mod matrix. Right now I’m not there yet but this sound is serviceable. It reminds me of the Yamaha Dx Brass. I decided to call the patch “East of Da Sun”. Don’t ask me why because I don’t know, I guess I was trying to think outside the box. 🤷🏾‍♂️😂

Synthstrom Deluge - classic downtempo synth with Zeptocade, Chroma Console

video upload by Jay Hosking

See this post for additional details on the Zeptocade.

"Please support my work on Patreon: / jayhosking
A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

Full disclosure: Ian from Synthstrom got in touch and we were discussing my older Deluge videos. I mentioned I had been missing the Deluge since I sold it, and he kindly offered to ship one to me so I could try the new screen and community firmware. I didn't pay for this Deluge, although I did pay taxes and duty on it (O, Canada). In short, while I bought my original Deluge, this new one was sent by Synthstrom.

But I have to say it's so good to have it back. The updates to the hardware (i.e. the screen) and the firmware have fixed basically every shortcoming I felt in the device, and they did so without compromising what makes the Deluge so great. Thanks to the screen, I can finally learn how to better use the device without resorting to YouTube searches, I can easily adjust patches and use samples effectively, and I can see all the new effects and other changes. And thanks to the community firmware, I can now bust out of the one-endless-loop mentality with grid mode, and have stereo chorus, and so much more. And somehow, all these new additions don't seem to get in the way of what made the Deluge so great in the first place: great synth sounds, feeling like a sketchpad space where it's fun to quickly draft ideas, buttons that feel really great to the touch, and a complete groovebox package with endless sequencing plus MIDI and CV out.

Here, I relied on some of those well-known Boards of Deluge preset packs (go check them out!) to drum up some inspiration. From there, I started to explore looped audio stretching, which I'd never done in the Deluge but was now so easy, as well as resampling. And finally, I switched into the new grid mode for some easy arrangement and clip launching. It's just awesome.

I wanted some more drums, and something with a few more buttons to play, so I added in the Infinitedigits Zeptocore/Zeptocade. It's an audio loop slicer and player with a strong emphasis on performability, which is right up my alley. It's also imperfect, which I discuss more in the Patreon behind-the-scenes video. In short, I adore the performance aspect and think it sounds so good (especially through the Chroma Console for saturation, compression, and delay), but I also struggled to keep it in tempo and not bugging out.

Ultimately, I was surprised where this one ended up. I thought it was going to be a busy fast song, but it fell into a more contemplative and interesting backbeat.

Thanks for listening.

ASM Introduces Limited Edition Hydrasynth Explorer 888 in Orange

Press release follows:

ASM proudly presents production-limited orange ‘Hydrasynth Explorer 888 Units’

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA/HONG KONG, CHINA: Ashun Sound Machines (ASM) is proud to present ‘Hydrasynth Explorer 888 Units’ — ultimately available as a special edition of Hydrasynth Explorer dressed up in an eye-catching orange colour scheme synonymous with the music hardware brand itself and limited to a production run of 888 units worldwide, which will surely appeal to both numerology enthusiasts and synth collectors alike — at The Brooklyn Synth & Pedal Expo, October 5-6, Brooklyn, NY, USA and Machina Bristronica, October 12-13, Bristol, UK…

It is fair to say that the eye-catching orange colour scheme applied to ‘Hydrasynth Explorer 888 Units’ has been synonymous with ASM since day one. Such synonymity is being celebrated by ASM, applying that same colour scheme to the appropriately-named ‘Hydrasynth Explorer 888 Units’ as a special edition of Hydrasynth Explorer — effectively a compact-sized Hydrasynth featuring a 37-note mid-sized key-bed with proprietary ASM Polytouch® technology to provide responsive velocity and expressive polyphonic aftertouch features that are not found in other smaller-sized keyboards in a perfectly portable package (optionally) powered by eight (not included) AA batteries — limited to a production run of 888 units worldwide. Why 888 units? Ultimately answering that supposedly simple question yields some interesting information — in keeping with ‘Hydrasynth Explorer 888 Units’ yielding some interesting sounds — for not only is 888 a strobogrammatic number, meaning that the numerals used are rotationally symmetric so appear the same when read upside down, the number itself represents triple fortune in numerology! Needless to say, ‘Hydrasynth Explorer 888 Units’ will surely appeal to both numerology enthusiasts and synth collectors alike. And who knows? Owners of those production-limited ‘Hydrasynth Explorer 888 Units’ may one day be sitting on a small fortune!

Anyone attending The Brooklyn Synth & Pedal Expo, October 5-6, Brooklyn, NY, USA — a free-to-the- public pop-up event of synths and guitar effect pedals — and/or Machina Bristronica, October 12-13, Bristol, UK — a festival of knobs, buttons, and discussions — could have the good fortune of experiencing ASM showcasing ‘Hydrasynth Explorer 888 Units’ there for all to see and hear. However, anyone wishing to buy ‘Hydrasynth Explorer 888 Units’ — packaged with a limited-edition sticker sheet featuring related themes — will have to practice a little patience... rest assured, though, that they will be well worth waiting for.

Available at participating authorised ASM dealers in November 2024, ‘Hydrasynth Explorer 888 Units’ is priced at an MSRP of $799.00 USD ($649 USD MAP)/€859.00 EUR/£715.00 GBP.

Check with dealers on the right for availability.

Tiliqua: Synthesizing Music Synthesizers (ORConf 2024)

"Tiliqua is an open-source Eurorack module that aims to make FPGA-based audio and video synthesis more accessible.

For updates: https://www.crowdsupply.com/apfelaudi...

This is a reupload of a talk I gave on Sept 13, 2024 at ORConf in Gothenburg, Sweden. Learn more about ORConf at https://fossi-foundation.org/orconf/2024."

"Tiliqua aims to make FPGA-based audio and video synthesis accessible to everyone. The Tiliqua hardware architecture, alongside a comprehensive collection of example projects built in Python (Amaranth HDL), allows you to experiment with synthesis techniques that are out of reach of embedded microcontroller-based platforms. Think extreme oversampling for alias-free audio-rate modulation, low-latency effects, video synthesis, and high-speed USB audio.

Tiliqua can store up to 8 projects (bitstreams) simultaneously—you can switch between them at runtime without needing a PC. Out of the box, Tiliqua can be:

A video synthesizer (vectorscope display with audio-rate beam modulation)
A multichannel wavetable oscillator (1 MHz oversampling for audio-rate FM)
A high-speed 4 in/4 out USB 2.0 audio interface
A polyphonic MIDI/touch synthesizer
A multichannel diffusion delay
A multichannel pitch shifter
A MIDI/CV converter
A matrix mixer
As the project develops and with community contributions, we hope to add many more.

Tiliqua itself is modular—the FPGA core (an integrated System-on-Module in M.2 form factor) can be removed and embedded in your projects. The audio interface section can be decoupled and connected to other FPGA development platforms. Pictured above, Tiliqua contains the following key components:

Audio Interface
8 (4 in + 4 out) DC-coupled audio channels, 192 KHz / 24-bit sampling supported
Touch and proximity sensing on all 8 audio jacks (if unused)
PWM-controlled, user-programmable red/green LEDs on each audio channel
Jack insertion detection on all 8 jacks
Motherboard
Switched rotary encoder with bar graph display.
Dual USB ports:
dbg: Included RP2040-based JTAG debugger supported by openFPGAloader
usb2: USB PHY connected directly to FPGA for high-speed USB Audio support
Display output for video synthesis (maximum resolution 720/60P)
2x expansion ports for up to 24 simultaneous audio channels (PMOD-compatible)
MIDI-In jack (TRS-A standard)"

Syntrx II: Say hello to my little friends

video upload by Richard DeHove

"The Syntrx II is typically marketed as a type of modular synth and with many modular performances there's no keyboard. My Syntrx skills aren't at the "no keyboard" level yet so as a variation I thought why not use that versatile star of many situations, the trusty DB-01? It has a keyboard mode and while I'm at it I can feed the signal into the Syntrx.

So a few quick pokes of the matrix and the DB-01 was alive as a source. Even better the DB-01 controls were affecting the Syntrx tones in some FM-ish way. In fact all the DB-01 parameters were doing something to the main pitch!

So that was very interesting and over the course of a couple of hours I tried to isolate and refine the effect. I failed utterly. The more I fiddled the muddier it got. So I went back to the original and this is the result. Truly I don't know what's going on here but it worked. And instead of tweaking the knobs on the Syntrx all the tweaking happens on the DB-01. The sound has definite DB-01 flavors yet is clearly beyond what the DB-01 could do alone.

The routing I attempted was for the processed DB-01 signal to go out of the Syntrx and into the Zen. The core Syntrx sound went through the internal reverb of the Syntrx then to the DAW. So there's two stereo pairs. The sound is exactly as you see it - there has been absolutely no EQ, compression or effects added.

The video is my mashup of two US civil defense videos from the 1950s.

Many thanks to my kind patrons who keep this channel ad-free

10/1/24 (manual freq) Pasco Scientific 9301 & WA-9307A + Yamaha EM-100 + Peavey 1300 + CXM 1978

video upload by Cfpp0

"The limitation of these not-synthesizer-synthesizers is part of the appeal. Here I’m practicing using the frequency knob of one of the Pasco Scientific 9301 dual function generators to create a melody, then adding four droning frequencies from the WA-9307A Fourier synthesizer and, eventually, a droning second 9301. It’s all mixed within the Yamaha EM-100, which has an internal Accutronics tank. The four frequencies from the WA-9307A are panned pretty wide left and right, but in this video we hear only the left output channel on the EM-100, which runs through the Peavey 1300 delay and is panned center on the Mackie Onyx 1640, where it gets another delayed reverb from the CXM 1978, which is set slightly fast to create a limp or shuffle to the stacked quarter notes. The 9301 sounds already have a lot of odd phasing, which is increased by the spring reverb, but the old Peavey 1300 delay stacks the notes (and the spring reverb) and furthers the phasing, while also adding pitch anomalies similar to wow and flutter on tape."

Estradin PX-1100 (RX-1100) Soviet Delay/Reverb Multi effect Ӏ Эстрадин Рх-1000 Ревербератор

video upload by Red Star Melodies

"It was manufacture at one of the biggest soviet radio plant "Estradin" in Zhytomir city where was produced power moog-type synths (Altair-231, Estradin-230, Solaris-314), signal processors and guitar effect pedals in Soviet Union.

PX 1100 can produce warm vintage echo, delay, reverb and chorus effects that can`t be reproduced by modern digital signal processors. It has really wide range of echo effects - from very short resonant self-oscilation delays to long endless repeats, sweet reverbs and weird chorus.

The front panel has knobs: Input, Repeat, Fx Ammount, Timbre, Balance, Volume, Delay, Frequency
Buttons: Bypass, Chorus, Hall, Reverb, Memory, 1/0,25

!!The supply voltage - 220-240V/50Hz. For 110/127V, a voltage converter is necessary!!"
